  • Probably one of the most epic videos that we've ever captured on the exchange of martial arts knowledge. In this exhibition match, we have Bokator, the Cambodian ancestor of Muay Boran and Muay Thai, vs Capoeira, the Brazilian descendant of Kipura Angola. These are two of the coolest styles of martial arts ever, and the practitioners of the styles put themselves to a test against each other for the first time. Representing Bokator is Dean Rosenwald, lead coach and owner of Santa Monica Striking. Representing Capoeira is Alfred Kendrick, lead coach and owner of Fit Arts. Let's see what cool lessons we can learn on our martial arts journey from watching this awesome matchup! Leave your comments below!

    You can tell that Alfred the capoeira guy is comfortable under pressure. I like that he can work the crowd and then immediately defend against Dean charging to take advantage. A great way overall to be competitive and still have fun in a fight. I find that too many MMA fans just default to the same "muh functional martial arts beats flashy TMA" and essentially imply that no attacks other than basic kicks and punches should be taken seriously as being "functional". Alfred here really shows that even complex acrobatic kicks can be used to pressure and fend off opponents when you know when to use them.

    • @vaiyt
      @vaiyt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some martial arts were developed for niche uses besides one-on-one sparring. Capoeira was used as a complement to other street fighting skills and also as a way to show off against rivals.
      The current styles are relatively modern, developed in the early to mid 20th century as a way to make it more formal and "respectable". This allowed Capoeira to secure government endorsement in the 1930s over other styles developed in the country, and most likely allowed it to be preserved at all.

    Not really sure what the gameplan from the bokator guy was. His opponent had a hight advantage but He kept his arms low and a very low stance. Was this his first fight? Dont want to be disrespectful, just thinking that He probably lacks experience.

  • @Z4U3398

    Generally-speaking, traditional S.E. Asian martial arts like bokator, muay boran & pencak silat tend towards a lower, more squat stance to anticipate opportunities at takedowns. The catch 22 being that these techniques rely on *form* (kata) to execute, as well as counter-attack mode of operation. With the more modern, upright muay thai-esque stance designed to allow for better strike manueverability.
    Thus, the rather awkward-looking strikes this bokator exponent is pulling off. To the point of actually slipping from his own spin kick. Why? Our stance forms the basis of our tactics. If you're in a traditional stance designed for takedowns, the lowered centre of gravity plus weight distribution will hinder your ability to fire isolated strikes (kickboxing style kicks & punches) effectively. Thus, he shouldn't have chased the capoeirista in that stance & instead wait to counter with appropriate form.
    The capoeirista is not only well-conditioned but clearly learnt & has exposure, as well as sparring experience with non-capoeira fighters. Judging by his well-timed kicks that *did* connect, most of the time. And this exceeded my expectation, tbh. Since my initial presumption was, "Ah, capoeira. RIP economics of movement." Now? I'm actually impressed. He's a master of his art, no doubt. Very smooth application of acrobatic kicks. Which isn't something one would see too often off the silver screen.
    Overall, nice exhibition fight to gauge & analyze the potential of either styles for ring/cage combat situations. Bravo! 👏

    It's strange to see Bokator for the first time. You can see elements of Muay Thai but seems to have a very low stance, very side on too like some kung fu styles. It's almost like the dances you see at the start of Muay Thai, the traditional poses at the start of the fight are almost like a good few stances seen here.. The More erect stance of Muay Thai seems more effective, shame it didn't have 3 rounds, would like to have seen the high stance.

    MMA just make something incredible, instead of destroying traditional martial arts, it's force them to evolve. Kung fu, Karate, Capoeira, all of them are adapting to MMA.

  • @WarbossR0kt00fSant0s
    @WarbossR0kt00fSant0s 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That's actually a really good fight, but the Bokator guy really needs to work on his balance. Capoeira guy's got good strikes, but he seriously needs to get his timing right. Great fight, but both guys have to improve their fighting, otherwise, I'll assume this as choreography. And they both have to quit stumbling sometimes while they're fighting, that's a huge mistake in a match like this because it just means you lost your balance standing up to your opponent.
    I might need to train in:
    Boxing (both professional and Khmer)
    Bokator
    Muay Thai
    Wrestling
    Kickboxing
    Lethwei
    and Goju-ryu karate
