When I first sparred my Muay Thai Kru and his senior guys, I came from a modern trad arts background and my sidekick and hook kick demolished then. I’d love to be more subtle as I trained with them for 18+ years but that’s my experience
About 50 years ago, Karatekas and Thai boxers used to fight each other all the time in Asia and it was basically 50-50. Many people seen to think that Karate doesn't work as a foundation in kickboxing, while Muay Thai works, because many karate schools have been watered down over the years and turned into businesses. But just take a look at guys like Wonderboy Thompson, Raymond Daniels or Michael Page. Real Karatekas are actual killers in kickboxing
@@800usd i mean, you guys do have a point. The thing is that classic Karate masters had a superior workout to most styles, this allowed them to hurt you with moves that would usually tickle (lol). They also trained in weapons, used takedowns, and joint locks. One thing I love about Jeff’s videos . Is the fact that he does absolutely ZERO peacocking or posturing. He’s always humble and shows footage that highlights BOTH fighters abilities and success . Jeff doesn’t make it a highlight reel of himself. As someone that has competed and trained themselves, when you enter a gym egos are left at the door. The best part about both these pro athletes is to see the level of cardio they both have. The amount of stamina needed to have a friendly sparring of this standard is unbelievable and only people who have done martial arts physically will understand!
Very unique opponent. Shorter, ultra flexible, and has the setups that shoot from an in and out path. I was surprised he was able to close the distance so well being the smaller fighter.

Great sparring session Jeff! Your foot sweeps (and sequences afterward) are really well done! I love to see it. Robbie's kicks are quite impressive. Thanks for sharing!
He's so good at kicking! In theory, dogde a kick in the head should be easier than dogde a punch, but that way he uses his kicks are as effective as a jab, even tho it has to travel more distance!
That's the thing that even some Karateka don't understand Karate Kicks are designed for you to either run into them or be quick and precise. But for both of these the key is sneakiness. First time watching this and I can already respect your content. I can watch more comparisons like this all day. It's nice hearing fighters commenting on their fights and training sessions vs commentators or fighting fans talking about the details of the engagements because the technical facts of the momentary situation are lost. Fighters expose the details rather than commentating for fans which is better for viewer ratings but unhelpful when understanding what went wrong or right for the fighter in the moment. This is one of the best videos I have seen in a long while. Keep up the amazing work!
Fire sparring session 🔥 I love the karate style and what you said in the end is the best part of karate. Blitzing, in and out but with Muay Thai weapons is the way. Great vid!
It's such a joy to watch each and every one of your sparring sessions. I've started training MMA a year ago (I'm 48) and I am still not comfortable with sparring, but these clips are a ton of fun and a good way to learn.
I loved this! For perspective I'm nearly 59 years old and I've had an interest or curiosity in MA beginning with Harold Watanabe, a USMC judo instructor, better known as Tojo Yamamoto, a wresting heel in the southeast. The "Kung Fu" TV series solidified my interest. I've seen the irrationality in the way MA was displayed in karate and Chinese MA magazines. The opponent almost always attacks in the same style represented in the article and most of the techniques are performed at a distance in which a block isn't needed. As mentioned by another commenter there is a plethora of YT videos in which the prime motivation is apparently to make the cocky owner of the video look great while he shows a lack of common curtesy in his manner and his words. This is a breath of fresh air! Here is martial artist who chooses to make encounters with a variety of styles, presents honestly with humility, showing respect and appreciation for his guest and their style. In doing this it is apparent Mr. Chan chooses to respect the viewer as well.
Outstanding Sparring session! Despite an obvious difference in reach and height, you both had excellent combinations and made the best use of timing, tactics and great movement within the space. Really enjoyed this sparring. One of the best i've seen from someone doing karate to be honest. Rob's flexibility and control is really insane and a beauty to watch. Had to replay his kicks esp. the axe kick, spinning hook kick, and side kicks over a dozen times😂😂🤦♂The way he leans back still having the control while throwing the spinning hook kick is truly remarkable. I do throw good spinning hook kicks but I need to work on having more control considering the fact it seems we'll be within the same height range. He also has good footwork for a karate dude, surprisingly not being so flat-footed. I noticed he has a pattern though which Jeff didn't exploit. Whenever he closes distance and he misses throwing a jab or front/side kick, what always comes next is definitely the spinning back kick which makes sense actually bcuz it should be the least counter an opponent should be expecting. He reminds me a bit of a well known iranian kungfu fighter, who often knocked out opponents that threw spinning hook kicks with his own spinning hook kicks with impeccable timing, and angle.
The problem with a lot of martial arts schools is the LACK OF SPARRING, I have been to some kickboxing school that do not do sparring at all and do not even allow it, yesterday I went to a karate school to sign up and they do not do any sparring but then I went to another one that do a lot of kumite and I watched the intermediate class and the guys were a beats, so it is the lack of sparring what is killing most martial arts.
He's making consistent connection, against a taller person, at his current height. I can't image how more effective this guy would be if he was taller.
Great observation. I thought the same thing. Can also imagine how a year of straight boxing would benefit Robbie. He is already a great standup fighter.
This was one of the most engrossing sparring sessions I've ever seen! I'm a life long TSD guy w/a few years of TKD, and seeing y'alls different flavors with kicking is especially wonderful. Credits all around, but I gotta say that Robbie's side kicks are on fire, and that axe kick was bonkers. Great stuff, this was really fun.
Making the thumbnail where you are taking a crazy kick is EPIC. It’s why you are my favorite MMA pro bc you are more about the art than ego… which incidentally makes me respect the hell outta you!!
This is the best sparring video I've ever watched. Good editing, good info, great moves in sparring and respect towards each other. Keep up the great work!💪🥊
I love your channel sir and I appreciate how respectful you are of other styles. I feel MMA made practitioners more open-minded but the audience more close-minded. People talk like benny urquidez never existed.
I think that part of it is that most people who do martial arts grow up doing judo or karate as their martial art. If you did some grappling with high level judokas and did more sparring videos with high level karate guys, I think you could get tons of views as these arts don’t get a whole lot of love in MMA compared to other martial arts. Good luck!
Great technique and restraint, guys. I like how you point out all the significant strikes and are fair in your judgements. It's also nice to see a sparring match against someone who is trained well in different styles like karate. Subscribed!
I love these demonstrations with different disciples showcasing their abilities, it reminds me of why the early days of the UFC were so important. Truly different styles, clashed in a head to head competition.
This guy's kicks are incredible! I can see why you chose his axe kick as the thumbnail, it looks amazing. Really interesting sparring session, the breakdowns are really interesting and helpful too.
Sometimes (just sometimes really) i get proud to be a karateka. Muay Thai and MMA are the fiercer opponents to sparring with and the karateka balanced the score in this match. Thank you for provide this experience!
Dude that first little thumbnail clip was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. He time that so perfectly the guys kick went over his head as he was backwards upside down wrapping his heel around to knock the guy out unreal
4:21 that side kick was just beautiful, man... I liked your previous way of editing videos where you slow down cool fast paced scenes you showed and break them down technically
greeeeeeat dude ..very good explanation ....keep with these videos...I´m sure...it´s gonna be my vision in a combat.... God bless! Julio Cesar from Brazil - Brasília capital
Great video, really nice to see such clean sparring. One thing I want to add is that I'm surprised how many of your crosses/jabs he ate, which weren't set up by any other technique, you just threw them when you felt like he's in distance. When you're both sparring in this "fencing" style, the person who has the more reach has a clearer advantage over the person who has smaller reach. The smaller guy has to keep moving, mostly the head, be more elusive while you're both out of reach for each other, since when you start closing the distance the smaller guy will get into distance for the taller one first, so he's going to be in reach for the other person, he's in danger of getting hit first. Now I'm aware this is not so simple, black and white, but you get the idea. I think his head movement was quite lacking.
There was so much editing you could have done here to make this appear better for you and you chose to entirely leave your ego at the door. That's something we all preach about in training but this is a clear and impressive example of it. Great work man.
love your channel bro your motivating me to enter the martialarts as a student again !! thanks a bunch love the sskillset and the playfullness and respectyou make the videos !! much love from the netherlands god bless
Great demonstration of many things, and what a privilege to spar with Robbie Lavoi! With an imbalance in reach I expected to see a lot of distance management, in and out, but I certainly didn't expect so many of the fast inside strikes to be high kicks. One never knows what you will come up against! Thank you both for the video.

He's very skilled
Robbie Lavoie
Lavoie!
He's making consistent connection, against a taller person, at his current height. I can't image how more effective this guy would be if he was taller.
Great observation. I thought the same thing. Can also imagine how a year of straight boxing would benefit Robbie. He is already a great standup fighter.
@@elindioedwards7041 agreed 💯. Great minds think alike 😂
hes sooo good!!
i think his lack of height benefits him in his quickness and closing the distance
Why so much urban legend that karate is not effective! Many great fighters base is karate. Leota machita and georges st pierre to name a couple. Smh
Great job guys that was really clean sparring sesión 🎉
thx!!
Good masterclass. Thanks for sharing.
A little late to the party but man did I enjoy this, and the way you stopped and highlighted what was happening in post production.
Great stuff, this was really fun.
cheers!
Really love the editing on this video. Straight to the point and easy to see what's happening.
Making the thumbnail where you are taking a crazy kick is EPIC. It’s why you are my favorite MMA pro bc you are more about the art than ego… which incidentally makes me respect the hell outta you!!
thank you brother!!
This is the best sparring video I've ever watched. Good editing, good info, great moves in sparring and respect towards each other. Keep up the great work!💪🥊
Would be awesome to see you spar with wonder boy at his gym
The flexibility and how easy he makes all those kicks look to execute was great to see
I love your channel sir and I appreciate how respectful you are of other styles. I feel MMA made practitioners more open-minded but the audience more close-minded. People talk like benny urquidez never existed.
This was one of the most fun sparring sessions I’ve watched in a while!
thanks man!
Subscribed!
thanks for the support!
Master in Distance management
I love these demonstrations with different disciples showcasing their abilities, it reminds me of why the early days of the UFC were so important. Truly different styles, clashed in a head to head competition.
Cheers!
I loved this match up. Just goes to say Karate techniques apply with the MMA striking techniques can work. You both did good... can learn from this.
But if you miss it puts in extreme danger. It's the trade off you can ko from a high kick or miss and end up on the ground getting pounded
@@ishe728 Now thats where your ground game come into play, if you fall to the ground attempting that kick
@@superfoot53 most fights will end up on the floor so it's definitely important to have some ground fighting skills in any type of fight. Good point
This guy's kicks are incredible! I can see why you chose his axe kick as the thumbnail, it looks amazing. Really interesting sparring session, the breakdowns are really interesting and helpful too.
yeah he is amazing!!
Cheers!
this remains still my favorite sparring footage in the entirety of youtube. I find myself coming back to watch this poetry in motion all the damn time
Oss
4:21 that side kick was just beautiful, man...
I liked your previous way of editing videos where you slow down cool fast paced scenes you showed and break them down technically
👏👏👏. No egos, just pros putting in work w mutual respect. A pleasure to watch 🙏
:)
Great educational video. Really nice to see you guys go at it. Keep up the super work.
thank you for watching!
this is another Great video from you, so awesome to see these. keep them coming
My first comment on this channel. I love that control that you guys just presented. 99% ppl cannot do it.
thanks for the comment!
Such a pleasure to watch you guys do sparring. I wish people in my gym were more respectful to each other.
thx!!
Really good stuff, enjoyed this session.
Best MMA content on TH-cam your the man Jeff!

I think his head movement was quite lacking.
thank you for watching!
You guys showed great professionalism and great control everybody should notice that. Great fluidity on both sides top notch
thank you!!
Jeff Chan is the best martial arts content creator on TH-cam bro.
Thank you!!
There was so much editing you could have done here to make this appear better for you and you chose to entirely leave your ego at the door. That's something we all preach about in training but this is a clear and impressive example of it. Great work man.
thanks for the support!!
Man Jeff your flow is amazing everytime I watch u bruh it just art
thank you brother!!
This breakdown is world class, thank you for posting.
love your channel bro your motivating me to enter the martialarts as a student again !! thanks a bunch love the sskillset and the playfullness and respectyou make the videos !! much love from the netherlands
god bless
thank you man!!
thank you for the breakdown. made it much better for me to watch, understanding more what was going on. great vid!
no problem!
Robby is a dangerous man with a side kick that good
These sparring sessions looks so fun. Love watching this.
:)
