Muay Thai vs Bokator - Bokator Basics ft. Dean Rosenwald

  • We bring in Coach Dean Rosenwald from Santa Monica Striking to talk about Bokator, a Cambodian martial art that almost got lost in the 70s. The art has been re-vitalized and saved from extinction after a more sane government took over Cambodia, and the art of Bokator has been slowly spreading more and more in the past decades. Dean Rosenwald trained under Grandmaster San Kim Sean. San Kim Sean is the only Gold Kroma Bokator teacher, and he has been restoring a lot of the art since the 70s. Let's explore some of the basic moves of Bokator and some of the differences between Bokator and Muay Thai. Leave your comments below and let us know what questions you have for Dean and what future demonstrations you want to see! More demonstrations of Southeast Asian martial arts to come!

      I like that.
I'm in the LA area and will book a visit. How's he addressing the current social distancing with sparring? Light sparring with masks? How's that all working out in SM? SGV is still in lockdown.
The elbow technique reminds me of the how kicking styles differ. TKD/Karate shortened their stance for quickness similar to how Kendo practitioners have their stance which allows for quickness in step. The difference I think is speed vs power, like the kick, in TKD they sacrifice power for speed for points, MT is power so imagine a bat vs a whip, especially in movement. So, the MT elbow vs Bokatar seems speed vs power. Fascinating, I'm familiar with Lehtwai.
Do a video of the difference between Bokatar and Lethwai. Thanks FCB !

As a Cambodian American I don't care if Bokator was the originator of Muay Thai or whatever. Muay thai had consistently proved to the world as an elite fighting system. Take it to the ring. That's the only way. Action speak more than words.

As a full Cambodian 🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭 Nope. Yes Muay Thai is a famous style but it is equal with Kun Khmer but bokator is a higher and stronger more complex and if you master it you will be better and faster than Muay thai. So trust me bokator is in higher level of fighting style. Cambodia is better 🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭

    • @Kay-ol1ye
      @Kay-ol1ye 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, actions do speak louder than words. That's why Muy Thai became a derivative watered down version of Bokator. Bokator was used thousands of years ago in the Cambodian military. It's engraved in our Holy Temple, much older than Muy Thai. I believe all those actions speak for itself

Nope, the monkey you talked about is well known as Indian's/Hindu's Hanuman and bokator didn't have the head bands before (you can find old footage of it) those are Mongkol from Muay Thai. And muay thai doesn't have only one style of elbow, if you watch the old bokator version.. there are lots more dancing than today's version. Also, they say bokator means lion killer but in reality there are no lion ever existed in Southeast Asia. There are lions in India though

Are you dumb? There is footage of Khmer kickboxing before Khmer Genocide(National Georgraphic), so that argument is defused. Stop trying to discredit Khmer people for their culture and heritage. Thailand obviously had a direct line of influence from the Angkorian Khmer empire. Over 1,000 khmer ancient ruins present in Thailand, compared to Thai ancient temples under 50 in count. The massive influence is obvious..
Also, thai's like to claim Dvaravati culture when it's Mon culture. Mon's are not thai.
I see that thai are brainwashed by their people or government. I see some angry thai commenters trying to claim ownership of Phimai, Pnom Rung, and Preah Vihear as "Thai" - which are all Khmer temples.
We have carvings on Khmer temples to exemplify this fighting style. What does Thailand have? Blank red ancient bricks temples which are not as convincing as Tangible proof? Remmeber, Boran is a khmer ancient word, not thai lol, a so called muay boran moved called "Jap Kaw" means, Grab Neck in khmer. In original tai-kdai, there is no word for Grab Neck like how present day Thai's say it. For khmer, it's still the same. If you don't agree, you're just willfully being ignorant lol

@@NoLightMystery Please stop being stupid and ignorant. Learn some history ya?
You mean, the Khmer kickboxing documentary that made in 20s? So old ... indeed. No one is trying to discredit Khmer people. Khmer people on the other hand are trying to discredit Thai people and Thai cultures that they have today. Khmer empire fell and all the cultures were left in Cambodia which later on got wiped by Khmer communists as well. Not to mention on top of that, Cambodia ... the remain of Khmer empire ... was under Thailand's colonization for hundreds of years ie since 15s centaury before Thailand handed over Cambodia to France. During the time under Thailand, all high ranking Cambodian personal and royalties were educated in Thailand. Cambodian cultures today have nothing to do with Angkorian or whatsoever, but rather are Thai cultures and Indian cultures.
In case you didnt know, Thailand was founded in 12 centaury by Chinese Tai immigrants and Khmer locals. Initially, Thai cultures were mostly Indian and Khmer cultures but as time went by, Thai people started to improve and develop cultures further, unique enough to be called Thai cultures as we know today. So saying Cambodia is Khmer empire is as irrelevant as saying Thailand too came from Khmer empire. After all, before Thailand and Cambodia, both were under Khmer empire.
Imagine Chinese people saying Japanese cultures came from them. People just laugh because yes initially, Japanese people came from China and they carried old Chinse cultures with them. But as time went on, Japanese developed their own cultures. Today Japanese cultures are so different from Chinese cultures. If anything, today China has been adopting Japanese goods and technologies. Same concept here. Khmer empire may've influenced Siam, but Thailand has been influencing Cambodia.
Btw, France colonized Cambodia in 18s. Funny enough, there was absolutely no Bokator record written by France. You know why? Because Bokator just came after Ong bak movie and Muay thai lol

      @@iROChakri You didn't even get your facts correct? 12th century? Bro, it's 13th century(1200-1300).
I don't even know if I should even bother, when you don't even know your own people's history lol
Also, Sokhuthai was a vassal outpost of the Khmer empire before it gained independence. You think Thailand didn't get a direct line of influence from the Khmer empire? You must be delusional and willfully ignorant if you don't think they adopted anything that is "khmer".
It's okay to admit Khmer's had direct influence on thailand and that country adopted ancient angkorian culture. It doesn't mean Thai people are lesser than Khmers. Italian people even admit they had influence from rome. But thai people somehow, seem embarrassed to even admit it and distort history with misinformation.
You make the argument of Japan and china? Difference is, so called "Thai culture" is not distinct from Khmer culture. It's literally a same recycled or imitation of Khmer culture. Thai thinks the classical boran instrument Roneat Ek is Thai when in actuality, it's Khmer. Roneat is a khmer word. Thai's claim apsara classical dance originated from them and their proof is Pnom Rung/Phimai, but they're all Khmer temples. Thai's claim Sak Yant originated from them, yet they use Khmer numerals and khmer alphabets. Thai's tried to claim preah vihear but failed. Thai say "Dvaravati" culture is thai but it's Mon Culture. Thai people are not Mon people.
You see where this is going? Thailand likes to take what is "original" and call it "thai culture". It's disrespectful to khmer people and other cultures.
Your evidence are so weak, just based on biased nationalistic views.
Let me ask, you want to listen to me or a thai historian? Most likely someone more credible right? Certified? Well, here ya go, listen to a person who dedicated his life studying Thai history. Search up : Ayutthaya History Khmer Thai Historian Reveal
I think i'd rather listen to him, someone who is credible and studied ancient thai history. Not a youtube commenter who is salty because he can't handle that their culture isn't original.

@@NoLightMystery Man, if you disagree with me, that means you have your information wrong. You shouldnt even call them facts because they aint. They are just lies lol. Again, Sukhothai kingdom was founded in 12s centaury. Not sure if I should try educating you here too but since i've been educating many ignorant Cambodian people a lot on internet and TH-cam, I guess I dont mind helping to educate you about your history too. After all, Cambodia is like a younger brother to Thailand anyway.
You dont seem to know your own history or what you're even talking about. Sukhothai kingdom is known as the first kingdom of Thai people was founded when Chinese Tai immigrants from China and Khmer people. Thai people are a mix of Chinese-Khmer people to be accurate, while Cambodians are just Khmer people, without Chinese blood. The beginning of Thai history has nothing to do with Cambodia today as Cambodia was just so insignificant. Initially, Khmer cultures (not Cambodian cultures, these things never existed) had big influences on Thai cultures. However, Thai people developed their cultures further to be called Thai and recognized in the world. When Thailand rose in power and influences, Kherm empire started to lose power and finally it was left with the land called Cambodia today. That's why Cambodians always try to steal Thai cultures. Its either stealing Indian cultures or Thai cultures to be honest. You're just salty that both Thailand and Cambodia came from Khmer empire but Thailand managed to have their own cultures, which then taught to Cambodian people too.
Make no mistakes, Cambodia aint Khmer empire. If you think Cambodia is Khmer empire, using your logic, Thailand too is Khmer empire. Since Thailand colonized Cambodia for hundreds of years, Thailand have greatly influenced Cambodia. Cambodia never had its own cultures. Once Khmer empire died, Cambodia died with it. It suffered from civil wars and communism. It also got colonized by Thailand and France. By the time when Cambodian people finally had their own independence, they realized that they never had their own cultures left at all. Feeling ashamed that Cambodia too was part of Khmer empire/Thailand, why did Cambodia fall so short. Cambodia since then has been trying to claim Thai cultures which were developed throughout 15th - 19th. Thai people taught Cambodian royalties about Thai classic dances, Muay Thai, Khon, or even food. To sum up, 99% of things you see in Cambodia are actually Thais'.
You know, it is sad when you're trying to claim Thai cultures as yours. You can never change the history that Cambodia was a slave to Thailand for hundreds of years. You can never change that Cambodia royalties were educated Thai cultures in Thailand and sent back to educate lower class Cambodian citizens. You cant show any records written by France. Its just sad ... when you try to claim Thai cultures as yours. If Cambodia had Bokator or Aspsara classical dance, or Khon for 2,000 years (lol), the France colonizers would write down the records. Sadly enough, there are absolutely no records because they never existed. How could they exist? Cambodia was a colony of Thailand lol
Your stories are full of biases, brainwashes ... its actually very sad. No evidences at all .. smfh

Before the Tai kingdom emerged in 1230 AD, places like Sukhothai and Ayutthaya was under the Khmer empire. Sukhothai was inhabitant by Mon migrants from Southern Myanmar and established their own kingdom which is called Lavo Kingdom. Lavo fell into the Khmer empire in the 7th century, both Mon and Khmer culture merge each other. As for Ayutthaya (a different Tai kingdom) their kingdom emerged in 1350 but the kingdom had more Khmer influence but less Mon influence compared to Sukhothai. There is a bloodline between the Ayutthayan and the Angkorian.

Ridiculously, about the Bokator that we see today. It comes from a hard effort to recreate a martial art of Cambodia. Inspired by Muay Thai and Muay Boran. Including absorbing the fighting style of Bua-Kaw and Tony Jaa, In summary, it is a re-make a new "Bokator" by the master San Kim Sean, who was helped by the Thai military to escape from the Khmer Rouge from 1975 to 1979 to got new live in America.
There was never evidence of Bokator fighting style videos before 20th century. But have videos of Khun Khmer (original 1:30 th-cam.com/video/H3_GBgqUQ8Q/w-d-xo.html ) fighting style in year 1930 and not same Muay Thai style.
Also Cambodia ever been Thailand colonized more than 400-500 years agoes. In South East Asia Most countries are culturally mixed. due to the contiguous terrain Therefore, it is not unusual to have similar cultures.

Asian are not one race and not all Asian originate from China or Taiwan. And not all martial art are originate from Chinese. Asia mean is the other side of the world. Asia is a continent that Cacausian give a name to with many races and origins. Just like the Native American is the first people that live in America so is the Mon people the first people that live in mainland Southeast Asia.

The only art that resembles Muay Thai is Bokator. It is registered in UNESCO because it's been proven through research. Respect to Fight Commentary for not being biased.
