From my experience in TMA, if there's one thing they don't teach you, it's how to 'block' at close range (like against hook and uppers). Most of the time, you're taught how to parry, not block. And as soon as someone breaks that range and gets in your face, you're fucked. (at least in my experience). DW, I patched up that hole now

Yeah I think a lot of people who practice wing chun become too focused on trying to reach for their opponents arms to prevent the strikes, instead of covering or moving their feet, and doing so puts them at an inherent disadvantage when their opponent is aggressive and throws unpredictable combinations; after a few hard/fast punches are thrown, it becomes virtually impossible to precisely intercept each one and you will almost inevitably wind up getting clocked on the side of the head with your arms straight out in front of you. A lot of TMA people simply don't seem to realize that while the idea of parrying or trapping everyone of your opponent's strikes, in order to allow yourself to counter as you block, seems like a great tactic in theory, it actually demands much faster reflexes and drastically less room for error than more simplistic and broad methods of defending against strikes-- ultimately rendering them impractical.

these "style vs style" matchups just prove one thing: When really sparring and fighting, it just looks like either bad boxing or wrestling!! I found this out when I was 13 years old (about 42 years ago) when competing in multi-style tournaments and entered the "sparring" or Kumite event. Wing chun, san shou, preying mantis, shotokan, kyokushin, TKD... it all devolved into a street brawl before the ref broke it up! god bless and train hard!

    • @FightCommentary

Yep. It takes a big skill level difference for "flairs" to be able to come out. So if Anderson Silva takes on Jerry (me), he'll use Wing Chun all day and beat me up because his skill level and reaction time are just so much better than me. But when the skill levels are pretty similar, there's going to be very little variation in looks besides "kickboxing + Wrestling and some BJJ"

I've said this on many videos, but in my WC school we learned the forward facing fak sao. It protects against hooks etc. Step in while elbow shoots straight up and then arm chops straight upward. At distance, you chop to his forearm and in close you chop at his neck. Guarding hand comes up, palm out, to protect the side of the face. It works like a charm and can be rapidly alternated in succession side to side if the opponent is punching wildly.

I don't like it when the rules try to "equalize" the skill sets.. It takes away too much from the more widely encompassing martial art.. even here, a very big thing about MMA is the inclusion of wrestling and grappling, it is the part of the formula that changes everything about how the practitioner approaches a fight.. take that away then it is just kick-boxing.. A more fair matchup for WC and the rules they come up with would be Muay Thai
And it's ridiculous when they say WC vs MMA when MMA itself is not an art form but rather just a competition ruleset, if you're gonna test any martial against "MMA", that martial art is the one who should conform to the MMA ruleset..

    • @tranquil_dude
      @tranquil_dude 2 ปีที่แล้ว

And that's why when when a practitioner of any lineage goes into a combat sports match ... the audience can't actually tell which lineage he was from (just from the moves), not because his particular skills don't work, but because he's conforming to the match rules.
If you ask anyone to "conform to the MMA ruleset", it's the same problem.
So in the end, I feel that matchups where each combatant tries to "visibly express" his/her style, really aren't as meaningful as they sound.
Instead, we should be aiming for an opposite ideal: defeat the opponent before anyone can see what "technique" you used. Afterwards you can claim whatever you want. 💁‍♂️

Your reasonings are completely wrong and opposite from what I was aaying.. "MMA being just kick boxing in this match " is because MMA is pretty much just kick boxing plus wrestling and grappling... Here, the thing is, the inclusion of wrestling and grappling into kicking boxing is the main thing that made MMA what it is... If you take that away, it's no different than challenging a kick boxer (also, I'll make this clear, MMA is not a diatinct artform, it's just a ruleset where you are allowed to kick, box, elbow, knee, wrestle and grapple. that's just it.. there is no mma punch, or mma kick, or mma takedown etc)..
With these east asian traditional martial arts stuff, whenever you see a guy in an mma or muay thai or boxing match, the moment he started getting hit, he suddenly starts acting like a poorly trained kickboxer or a poorly trained boxer.. it's not a difference in ruleset, it just show ultimate poor training.. A pure boxer going into an mma match still looks like a boxer, a pure muay thai fighter going into mma match still looks like a pure muay thai fighter (they may win, they may loose, but they don't loose the entirety of their form just because the rules are different, i have seen it with my own eyes). Because that works and traditional martial arts don't.
Even if they might still throw in some techniques from their signature style, not once ever have I seen someone successfully use traditional martial arts on a fight. What they do instead is take a modern fighting style that actually works (e.g. boxing or kickboxing) and graft their techniques onto it; at which point it's no longer Wing Chun. It's now MMA.

Body don't mean anything as you can clearly see who's winning but Wing Chun guys are backing up their words and actually fighting these MMA fighters.
Just like Mike Tyson said.....It's the energy you put into a fight style.

Lots of actual Wing Chun in this one, though the Wing Chun guys on average are obviously not as seasoned as the MMA guys. Much better than the last example. Overall, not the greatest representation of Wing Chun techniques. Wing Chun's value to MMA is in 2 unique attributes: obsessively ambidextrous footwork and clinch sensitivity. These guys have practiced lots of Wing Chun techniques, but their fight IQ is pretty low so they couldn't apply either of those things well yet.

If you're not going forward it's not Wing Chun. Wing Chun at a distance is ineffective. Wing Chun counter punching is ineffective. The Wing Chun practitioner will always be chasing the opponent when counter punching without forward pressure. Wing Chun is up close and always offensive. Never defensive minded first. Using jabs or single shots waiting on the opponent to strike back and counter will never work for Wing Chun vs boxing, kick boxing, Muay Thai, etc.

Totally agree and good point. I don't give credit to that aggressive wing chun guy doing the "bum rush". That wasn't a demonstration of skill when he's throwing uncontrolled haymakers, and getting pummeled in the face repeatedly in the process. About the only credit I can give him is he has a good jaw.
Even ground grappling aside, the MMA guy isn't even allowed to use stand up clinching and dirty boxing or else that aggressive wing chun guy would have thought twice about doing the bum rush.
What appears to be a "no clinching" rule is also a disservice to the wing chun guys and their own self denial of their style. Trapping is a form of clinching and a major concept in wing chun so that seems to tell me that they are not confident in their style if they are disallowing the clinch and trapping in the process.

@@crackhead3511 Agree. Maybe that's because the wing chun guy has not sparred regularly before with shots to the head allowed so the head gear is uncomfortable esp as it reduces your peripheral vision. But then wing chun is supposed to be tactile. That is to say in theory the advantage is supposed to be that once the wing chun guy is able to make some kind of contact with the opponent then he is supposed to be able to cling or stick to you, control your attacks by controlling your limbs through trapping. But it's all theory and doesn't take into account that the probability of doing all that is greatly reduced when the opponent can move and control the range. Once the opponent can use distance and movement hen the wing chun goes out the window.
