Props to Jay for putting up with this guy honestly. Jay has a very beautiful functional boat. If I was going solo, it would be with a duplicate of Jays boat.
Honestly! How annoying is this guy? If you took a drink every time he said "Jay" you would be staggering after 5 mins. And don't get me started on his annoying voice...😮
I have a 1981 S2-11C 36ft. People have told me that these boats aren't great in the ocean but it is my first boat and I love it. So happy to see that you have successfully sailed yours so much in the waters I want to some day. Put a smile on my face. Thank you Jay and Dan!!
I read your comment and the S2 are in my top 10 boats, especially the 11C. I presently own a Lancer 28' and that is not a good sailboat. She's not good at anything but she can handle anything, even me torturing her 😉she's reliable and never let me down. Tell me, how does your S2 dances with the wind and the waves?
I read enough comments to say something but won't because I am a gentleman....I am turning 60 this month so manners sir ;) You both jive well. The information was sooooo very helpful to me. I am selling everything to sail everywhere. I am in Florida and having never sailed before this may mean the Caribbean 1, 5, 7, 10 yrs and come home to sit on the beach and never go the whole distance of Caribbean, Australia/NZ, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and lastly the UK then home to sit on the beach and drink drinks with umbrellas in them while I toss a line in the water. I would be fine if that's what transpires or even half of it or just Caribbean. My Hunter 34 (34.5 feet long, almost 12 feet wide), has a port side aft-ish cabin, at the bottom of the companionway. It's what sold me on the boat. That cabin extends under the cockpit, for part of the berth. Ends, in front on an aft exterior locker. I'll be relocating a drain pipe, that sticks down 3 inches, just above the berth (it drains a shallow locker, that's over part of the berth area.
I'm interested in getting a Hunter 34. I read that there can be issues with bilge water getting stuck in the hull moldings and not draining away, creating "interesting" smells. Have you had this problem with your boat?
I like Jay’s boat. I like CC’s because of the owners cabin and the poop decks. Cockpits can be a little small. They also tend to have an engine room as opposed to compartments, which means more room to work on engine or add stuff such as genset, water maker, a/c etc.
Ok, that looks like heaven to me. I'm spending my last career days doing CAD and champing at the bit to be sailing brains out. It's so cool to see that doing jobs in upholstery and fiberglass, etc., is a viable option. I also have many skills so I'm really glad to see that. Plus I'm curious now about how people are liking the Carribean and this boat tour with your destinations mapped out is great. I do mapping for a living, along with design and it looks so much more fun to me to be it than be just charting it out. Thanks so much!
I changed from 36 feet to 29 feet , 1 year later to 27 feetv, and 1 year later now down to 22 feet. She is boatc45-47 in my life , hopefully the last..I lived aboard 6 monthsv, nonproboems..All is much easier for mev( 72 years now).
Dude lives on a boat in the middle of the ocean, me thinks he's several hundred nautical miles away from first world problems. Hey adventure man, saving for my own boat right now! I'll cya out there one day hopefully!
I’m currently living and working on my boat with my wife. To me anyone can sail if you get your wallet out. It’s hard when you work for a living and I hate folks that act like I shouldn’t be allowed to live this life because I’m poor. Really encouraging to see Jay make it to where I’m working towards.
Very informative video. I liked the comparison commentary of a center cockpit vs aft cockpit boats. Also the trade offs on what to spend your money on: sails, anchors, batteries, solar panels, davits, etc. Nobody has an unlimited budget, it was good to hear what they each had to sacrifice and why. Lastly, I had no idea one can put a live aboard sailing vessel on a truck cross country! that could really come in handy. Thanks guys.
I have hull #10, 1986 S2-35C. I have only come across one other on the Chesapeake. It's quite easy to run your reefing lines back to the cockpit as I've done. I also added a strong track which makes getting the main up and down very easy. I fit 4 x 100 amp (Renogy) behind the back cushion closest to the stove. It's a tight fit, but it gets them out of the engine compartment and frees up all the space under the galley sink/counter. More importantly, closer to the breaker panel. I would love to see what you did for an anchor winch. I ended up installing a reel style winch from Lone Star Marine.
It’s a nice boat and I’m sure it’s very well maintained but the hull being cored below the waterline is a dealbreaker for me. Even if they were plentifully available, when I list my criteria for what I HAVE to have in a boat, a solid FG hull is near the top of the list.

Great show. Love the boat, looking for something similar in the next few years. I'm in Puerto Rico of you need an extra hand from a retired electrical engineer that loves to be on the water.
You mentioned using your drone to navigate into a bay. I wonder why nobody puts one up the mast permanently. Especially if it has flir night vision, it would be great for navigating a crowded harbor/bay at night with low light/clouds. Kinda like a car backup cam.

I personally am looking for a center cockpit sailboat and I'm gonna be a solo sailer. I really love Jay's boat. Wish it was a 40 to 45 footer. But it is still a very nice boat.
Elephant Butte??!! I've moved back home to Albuquerque and I still want to sail a Folkboat in Abiquiú Lake and Navajo Reservoir! I've only sailed the cold San Francisco Bay, and up and down the coast. Great boat, yours is, especially there in the Bahamas. All the best to you!
I recommend, that you be prepared, for going south of the Equator. It's only warming half as fast, as the North. I expect lots of unrest, up North, when this Spring's crops come in, very very very short. I'm looking at the Rio Grand---the one in southern Argentina.
Didn't know S2 made this boat. I have an 1980 S2 11c. Slightly bigger, somewht older. I have sailed SunShine solo from Florida(left in 2010) to the Philippines. The problem with lots of locker space is you tend to accumulate a lot of unnecessary equipment . I used to tag stuff .if I didn't use it in a year it went out .
I like to say a lot of Jay tell him his friend Doug Solon from fort Pierce harbor on Savannah breeze says hello I was wondering where he was I'm leaving this January before my first trip over to the Bahamas and then I think I'm going to head south from there
Awesome tour video, jay has a great boat and is really well organized. However, i don't think i like the mast in the middle of the salon like that. However, it is a matter of choice. The importance here is that it is nice to have a friend like that to look after each other in the middle of the sea.
It's a very nice sailboat, with impressive mileage, and would be a viable option for me.... for the tropics. But my cruising/exploring goals involve the waters of the Pacific Northwest and up to and around Alaska, and I don't think I could trust anything but an aluminum hull in those waters.
Absolutely WONDERFULL presentation of a REAL SAILBOAT with a REAL SAILOR. Similar Boat then mine, very interesting. And good Information about Haul Out in Grenada, do all the Jobs and continue. That means to me, crossing the Atlantic from Spain Nov.-Dec. 24, that I have good Intel. Even the tours you want to do, Fabulously done. My End Destination is Vancouver Island. It would be interesting to know, why Trucking your Boat up to Vancouver? Is that not extremely expensive? Really LOVE HOW YOU DO THINGS
Boom vang is actually more important with this sheeting configuration. When easing the main sheet for downwind sailing, there’s nothing preventing the boom from lifting up.
Really interesting video. Thanks. I have a question: where does one start with sailing? I mean from zero. What are the first things to learn and what is the best way of learning them? I'm suddenly living in the Mediterranean, and it looks like I'll be here for years but I have zero knowledge of sailing. Amy pointers for a pure rookie much, appreciated.
I live in a 34' RV, in a warm climate. I couldn't live without air. I realize the power would be a problem on a boat. Do you just get used to the heat. When the wind is calm, it must be tough. I really like the aft cabin design as well. Beautiful boat.
An S2 center cockpit boat is a fairly rare thing. I almost bought one, two things stopped me though. The first thing was that this particular boat needed EVERYTHING to be worked on, not a single system on that boat was usable as it was. And the second thing was, as much as a center cockpit is nice, 35 feet is just a little bit too small, is a weird cramped space. OK, so there was three, they wanted $12,000 for a boat that easily needed 25 or 30 grand just to make it sailable and that was about $11,000 more than i would give someone for a boat that needed that much work.
Jay is a very patient and tolerant person.
Indeed! Hahaha
He’d have to be knowing anyone named “Dan”. Lol
Exactly. I was left wondering whose boat this video is actually about..
😂yes, stop saying my NAME!!!
A calm and reasonable person. 😉
Jay just sits there and chills while Dan insults his boat 😀 What a man.

super clean! You know this man's tool chest back in the day was perfectly organized at all times. Wish I was like that.

Awesome tour video, jay has a great boat and is really well organized. However, i don't think i like the mast in the middle of the salon like that. However, it is a matter of choice. The importance here is that it is nice to have a friend like that to look after each other in the middle of the sea.
Fair enough!
Great layout. Enjoyed the Vid
Glad you enjoyed it
It's a very nice sailboat, with impressive mileage, and would be a viable option for me.... for the tropics. But my cruising/exploring goals involve the waters of the Pacific Northwest and up to and around Alaska, and I don't think I could trust anything but an aluminum hull in those waters.
A boat like this would be fine in those conditions. You don't need a metal boat.
Awesome video I have it’s little brother the S2 9.2C or 30’ version.
Nice! Bet it's a cool boat!
Man, I’d sign up to do a few months on his boat! I don’t know anything but I bet he’s a hell of a guy to learn from!
Indeed he is!
That boat is awesome!!!!
Thanks!
Great video, nice to see how well you are doing.
thanks!
Nice walk through and review!
Glad it was helpful!
I'll be making a video on exactly this!
I live in a 34' RV, in a warm climate. I couldn't live without air. I realize the power would be a problem on a boat. Do you just get used to the heat. When the wind is calm, it must be tough. I really like the aft cabin design as well. Beautiful boat.
Yes, you get used to it, and if you get tired of the heat, you can sail north!
Great video!
Thanks buddy!
On the keel stepped mast comments. There are benefits to a keel stepped mast that weren't mentioned. Everything is a compromise.
For sure, I could only take so long on each thing.
Engine so clean 👌
An S2 center cockpit boat is a fairly rare thing. I almost bought one, two things stopped me though. The first thing was that this particular boat needed EVERYTHING to be worked on, not a single system on that boat was usable as it was. And the second thing was, as much as a center cockpit is nice, 35 feet is just a little bit too small, is a weird cramped space. OK, so there was three, they wanted $12,000 for a boat that easily needed 25 or 30 grand just to make it sailable and that was about $11,000 more than i would give someone for a boat that needed that much work.
It definitely sounds like that was a tough call!
i prefer boats with comfort ratio of above 30 at least. capsize ratio is doable below 2.0, not a bad looking boat though.
Right on.
