Best Sailboat For Solo Sailing {Budget Liveaboard Cruiser} [Capable & Affordable 35' $ailboat]

- WELCOME!!! To this full in-depth boat tour of a beautiful 1987 S2 35C. "Freda Kai" is a center cockpit sloop rigged monohull sailboat. She has a 6' draft, 50' air draft, 12'6" beam and a 29hp Volvo engine. Sailing at an average speed of 5.9 knots. While sporting 720w of solar panels, it easily makes all it's own electricity.
S/V Freda Kai has been sailed solo and with crew by my good friend, mentor, and buddy boat Jay Safro. This boat has been his home for the past eight years and more than 12,000nm. From this boat Jay loves to explore and go on adventures wherever his anchor rests across the Caribbean. Choosing to spend most of this time on anchor rather than a marina, like a true sailor should.
This is a humble, and comparatively affordable sailboat. But I think that is an upside. Because unlike most catamarans and other larger vessels. Freda Kai is highly affordable and has an very low cost to maintain. Allowing Jay to be able to sail and cruise full time. Without worry about breaking the bank. Earning money here and there when he needs to by working as an upholster on other boats, or doing fiberglass and any other job that might need to be done on a wide range of boats. Jay is truly a jack of all trades, and has been an insightful influence on my own sailing and cruising lifestyle over the past several years.
Jay has future plans of changing and adding just a few systems to his boat. Mainly a water-maker. But all in all, this boat has been and is a fully capable ocean going cruiser. In the future he plans to make more improvements and upgrades to this boat. Stay tuned to see what comes next! As well, Jay regularly takes on crew to join in his sailing adventures. Post a comment below if you're interested in joining aboard Freda Kai!

👋🏼New Here?!?👋🏼
Hello & welcome! I'm Daniel aka "Adventureman Dan." I've been living on the edge, from one adventure to another for the past nine years. Stating in Central California with my first GoPro, through SoCal, Baja, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Alaska and throughout the whole USA. But for the past five years on my sailboat "Adventureborne" I'm open to unlimited possibilities of where I can go, and what I can do!

Jay just sits there and chills while Dan insults his boat 😀 What a man.
We're good friends who can say it how it is.
Jay is a very patient and tolerant person.
Indeed! Hahaha
He’d have to be knowing anyone named “Dan”. Lol
Exactly. I was left wondering whose boat this video is actually about..
😂yes, stop saying my NAME!!!
A calm and reasonable person. 😉
Props to Jay for putting up with this guy honestly. Jay has a very beautiful functional boat. If I was going solo, it would be with a duplicate of Jays boat.
Jay's boat is great!
Honestly! How annoying is this guy? If you took a drink every time he said "Jay" you would be staggering after 5 mins. And don't get me started on his annoying voice...😮
Jay is a very humble man. 🙌
Jay is great! :)
Is it me or did he do a remarkable job managing to produce a video solely about Jay's boat but make it all about him...
I try. :)
Yes this guy is obnoxious and full of himself
Dude lives on a boat in the middle of the ocean, me thinks he's several hundred nautical miles away from first world problems.
Hey adventure man, saving for my own boat right now! I'll cya out there one day hopefully!
I was thinking the same thing. He made it about how it compares to his boat. Lol. Kind of an asshole really. Jay has a badass boat. Extremely nice.
I think that's a bit much singling out Dan, we're all assholes once you get to know us 😆@@terryshrives8322
This is one of the most comprehensive boat tours I've seen on YT. Great job!
Glad it was helpful! I've got another one coming soon!
super clean! You know this man's tool chest back in the day was perfectly organized at all times. Wish I was like that.
No doubt! Jay is on it!
Those people amaze me. I'm getting better at organizing but some one who "puts their tools away" or "finishes projects" in "timely manner".
I have a 1981 S2-11C 36ft. People have told me that these boats aren't great in the ocean but it is my first boat and I love it. So happy to see that you have successfully sailed yours so much in the waters I want to some day. Put a smile on my face. Thank you Jay and Dan!!
Thanks for sharing
Coastal cruiser - yet, the six ft draft (?)
I read your comment and the S2 are in my top 10 boats, especially the 11C. I presently own a Lancer 28' and that is not a good sailboat. She's not good at anything but she can handle anything, even me torturing her 😉she's reliable and never let me down. Tell me, how does your S2 dances with the wind and the waves?
I knew Eric Schlageter on e the designers of your boat. Eric went one to work on Americas Cup Boats. Sadly he passed way before his time.
I changed from 36 feet to 29 feet , 1 year later to 27 feetv, and 1 year later now down to 22 feet. She is boatc45-47 in my life , hopefully the last..I lived aboard 6 monthsv, nonproboems..All is much easier for mev( 72 years now).
Nice!
72 years yeah need to scale it back... Health becomes an issue things you take for granted when younger.
Very nice center cockpit boat, love the wood floors and microwave.
Wow that's a whole lot in a 35 footer, very very nice
Right!
These guys seem like great guys to meet and hang out with. I can't wait until I'm out there meeting other good people like this. Cool boat. Thanks for the video!
Hey thanks soo much. I hope to see you out here. That would be great!
I was glad to see someone from my home town sailing the Carib. Great job.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Elephant Butte...yeah for New Mexico lakes! Spent many hours walking the sands down there.
Nice!
Thanks Dan & Jay great tour and lots of fun listening to you both. Enjoy.
Thanks for listening
thorough boat tour with thoughtful questions at a good pace. Nice. liked that music at the end.
Glad to you liked it buddy!
Good to see both of you, gentlemen!
Hey, thanks!
I like Jay’s boat. I like CC’s because of the owners cabin and the poop decks. Cockpits can be a little small. They also tend to have an engine room as opposed to compartments, which means more room to work on engine or add stuff such as genset, water maker, a/c etc.
He's got a nice boat!
i never had any contact with sailboats and I love the aft cabins on center cockpit boats too!
It's a nice boat!
I’m currently living and working on my boat with my wife. To me anyone can sail if you get your wallet out. It’s hard when you work for a living and I hate folks that act like I shouldn’t be allowed to live this life because I’m poor. Really encouraging to see Jay make it to where I’m working towards.
What's crazy is only 35 of those boats were built!
Thats my dad. What's even crazier is this boat spent a majority of its life land locked at a lake in NM before heading to sea in 2019.
For sure!
Great boat, and great video. Thank you:) I almost started it over to count how many times you said Jay!
You should. I want to know how many times I say it. :)
Ok, that looks like heaven to me. I'm spending my last career days doing CAD and champing at the bit to be sailing brains out. It's so cool to see that doing jobs in upholstery and fiberglass, etc., is a viable option. I also have many skills so I'm really glad to see that. Plus I'm curious now about how people are liking the Carribean and this boat tour with your destinations mapped out is great. I do mapping for a living, along with design and it looks so much more fun to me to be it than be just charting it out. Thanks so much!
Glad to hear it's helping.
I grew up in T or C, so it’s nice to see someone and a boat from that area. Great boat and video!
Very cool!
Have to agree Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty are amazing sights from the water.
Indeed!
Brought sailing yacht down East River into NY harbor. At Verrazano Bridge heading toward ocean we were diverted from middle of the span due to a "jumper", only in NY
Nice boat Forshore I Like the Centre Coptit ,that keel Stepped mast is bullet Proof If your Rigging ever Fails , At Least the Mast Won"t come down
Well done on the voyage and a captivating vlog. Really enjoyed following your journey!👍
Thanks so much! 😊
Why is it all about you and your boat Jays got a nice boat !!
Yes, that's what the video is about.
I see it more that he's giving useful comparisons between centre cockpit and aft cockpit boats, with the pros and cons of each.
My Hunter 34 (34.5 feet long, almost 12 feet wide), has a port side aft-ish cabin, at the bottom of the companionway. It's what sold me on the boat. That cabin extends under the cockpit, for part of the berth. Ends, in front on an aft exterior locker. I'll be relocating a drain pipe, that sticks down 3 inches, just above the berth (it drains a shallow locker, that's over part of the berth area.
Nice!
I'm interested in getting a Hunter 34. I read that there can be issues with bilge water getting stuck in the hull moldings and not draining away, creating "interesting" smells. Have you had this problem with your boat?
We sail a Westerly Seahawk 34. And we love the center cockpit and the aft cabin.
I love Jay’s Boat!
I will let Jay know you like it!
I love the vibes between you guys its really funny
Jay's a great guy! Glad you picked up on that.
My first introduction to your channel. Great job. Makes me yearn for the cruising life.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great show. Love the boat, looking for something similar in the next few years. I'm in Puerto Rico of you need an extra hand from a retired electrical engineer that loves to be on the water.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
I love the boat!
The monthly costs would be very interesting.
Noted!
Thank you. Well done. Informative and entertaining.
Glad you liked it!
First time seeing y’all and I really enjoyed the tour and conversation.
Glad you enjoyed!
I live aboard mostly in the UK at anchor for 6 years. Less than a week alongside. Good tips to possible future crusing areas. Thanks
Nice tour, the interior is in such great condition. Nice.
It sure is!
Nice tour and interview among friends
Awesome friendship right there.
I certainly love my aft captains quarters on my boat.
For sure buddy.
thanks for sharing. Very cool future endeavors.
Glad you liked it!
i love the S2's and my second sailboat was a S2 9.2c
Seems like a great boat!
Jay, I just found it hard to believe that you would give up that cold shop in winter and hot shop in summer, sitting behind a sewing machine dealing with bitchy customers to go sail around the world like you have been doing for years. Ok after watching video I see know, that’s so awesome jay, love seeing updates on your journey.
Hahaha exactly! Jay made the right choice 👌
Absolutely WONDERFULL presentation of a REAL SAILBOAT with a REAL SAILOR. Similar Boat then mine, very interesting. And good Information about Haul Out in Grenada, do all the Jobs and continue. That means to me, crossing the Atlantic from Spain Nov.-Dec. 24, that I have good Intel. Even the tours you want to do, Fabulously done. My End Destination is Vancouver Island. It would be interesting to know, why Trucking your Boat up to Vancouver? Is that not extremely expensive? Really LOVE HOW YOU DO THINGS
Very nice! Well Done, Gentleman!
Glad to you liked it buddy!
Nice walk through and review!
Glad it was helpful!
Great flight plan Captain. 👍👍👍🍻
Thanks 👍
Sweet video and sailboat! 😍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, nice to see how well you are doing.
thanks!
What a great video. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It’s a nice boat and I’m sure it’s very well maintained but the hull being cored below the waterline is a dealbreaker for me. Even if they were plentifully available, when I list my criteria for what I HAVE to have in a boat, a solid FG hull is near the top of the list.
Right on.
Im new to this. Can you elaborate on what that means? Thank you.
@@HydeKills this boat has a balsa wood cored hull, meaning that there are two sheets of fiberglass sandwiched with balsa. As opposed to a solid fiberglass layup. If water gets into the balsa core, that boat will be structurally compromised. Solid fiberglass hulls are subject to their own issues but overall are much more desirable (in my opinion) that any cored hull. There are also hulls that are solid ‘glass below the waterline and cored above the waterline but given my preference, I’ll take solid ‘glass every time.
Jay , fantastic layout.
Glad you like it
Awesome S2 CC review.
It's nice!
Really cool interview. I don't know how you all can afford to do it but what a life. I love the Caribbean so I would probably stay in that area but I just left San Carlos in the Sea of Cortez and it was beautiful too.
Thanks 😊
oh cool, his boat's from Elephant Butte, that's like 1 hour from here. lucky boat got out of this stupid desert, hopefully i will soon too lol
Haha for sure.
Great layout. Enjoyed the Vid
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. Very interesting and well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
I would challenge anyone picking in Dan here to try filming a video with a good friend. Especially one that you like to tease with. Its hard to find a good balance.
So true!
If you go Lithium, be sure it's LiFePo4. The others can burn up, taking your boat with it. I decided, on my Hunter 34, to stick with lead-acid, move them closer to the centerline, just behind the motor (better balance to keep it upright. I have the shallow draft version), with anti-sulphators on each one (the potted kind, that only desuphate, when the battery is being charged.
I did use just that!
Nice boat, we are looking at sailboats and catamarans for our next boat. Hoping it will be cheaper to travel Australian Coast 🤙🥰💯
I'm looking to downsize to an S2 9.2C. I think they have an amazing layout
That boat is awesome!!!!
Thanks!
I have hull #10, 1986 S2-35C. I have only come across one other on the Chesapeake. It's quite easy to run your reefing lines back to the cockpit as I've done. I also added a strong track which makes getting the main up and down very easy. I fit 4 x 100 amp (Renogy) behind the back cushion closest to the stove. It's a tight fit, but it gets them out of the engine compartment and frees up all the space under the galley sink/counter. More importantly, closer to the breaker panel. I would love to see what you did for an anchor winch. I ended up installing a reel style winch from Lone Star Marine.
Sweet!
Awesome video I have it’s little brother the S2 9.2C or 30’ version.
Nice! Bet it's a cool boat!
Have a C30 '82, great video, big motivator for me to get her Bristol fashioned, she looks good Captain!
Right on!
Boom vang is actually more important with this sheeting configuration. When easing the main sheet for downwind sailing, there’s nothing preventing the boom from lifting up.
Man, I’d sign up to do a few months on his boat! I don’t know anything but I bet he’s a hell of a guy to learn from!
Indeed he is!
This boat would fit me too. topnotch boat.
Indeed!
Great video; thanks for showing us your home. Personally, I wouldn't put a center cockpit on anything below a 40.
Right on.
Amazing Thank you for sharing
Elephant Butte??!! I've moved back home to Albuquerque and I still want to sail a Folkboat in Abiquiú Lake and Navajo Reservoir! I've only sailed the cold San Francisco Bay, and up and down the coast. Great boat, yours is, especially there in the Bahamas. All the best to you!
Nice!
Great video and interview. Having a partner and friend to join you seems like a great idea.
I think so too!
Wow, surprised to Elephant Butte, NM.... love the lake, not sure many people would even know where that is!!
For sure!
Great video!
Thanks buddy!
Really nice boat
You mentioned using your drone to navigate into a bay. I wonder why nobody puts one up the mast permanently. Especially if it has flir night vision, it would be great for navigating a crowded harbor/bay at night with low light/clouds. Kinda like a car backup cam.
That is a good idea. But if you're against the light, it would not work. A drone can get any angle.
Beautiful boat
Thank you very much!
The problem with lots of locker space is you tend to accumulate a lot of unnecessary equipment .
I used to tag stuff .if I didn't use it in a year it went out .
There is a balance I suppose.
very nice boat J
It sure is!
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video, really enjoyed watching it. Nice job!
Thanks!
I like to say a lot of Jay tell him his friend Doug Solon from fort Pierce harbor on Savannah breeze says hello I was wondering where he was I'm leaving this January before my first trip over to the Bahamas and then I think I'm going to head south from there
Will do Doug, good to hear from you buddy!
I personally am looking for a center cockpit sailboat and I'm gonna be a solo sailer. I really love Jay's boat. Wish it was a 40 to 45 footer. But it is still a very nice boat.
Youll always want a bigger boat!
@@Adventureman_Dan yeah, it's a guy thing. But I heard many people say don't go over 45 feet if you're gonna solo sail. It gets harder to control.
When using lfp you use 100 % of your battery and it will outlive most of your boat. Also you can use it upside down or at any angle.
Good to know.
Well done
Thanks!
Groovy video
Thanks!
Love this boat!
Thanks for watching!
I love your content bro
Thanks buddy!
New sub❤love the boat. Wishing I was out on the water rt now. Lol
Thanks for the sub!
Nice!
Thanks!
I’ve heard Jay’s name way too many times today. Could make a drinking game out of it I guess.
Jay is awesome!

🍺
A very practical tour and well structured. Thank you! How can one contact Jay for canvas work?
On the keel stepped mast comments. There are benefits to a keel stepped mast that weren't mentioned. Everything is a compromise.
For sure, I could only take so long on each thing.
Great job as always! Would love to buddy boat with you guys one day! What software/app do you use to show the mapping? Ive seen Huub use it too, it's great for voice over B roll. Fair winds!
Thanks, I use travelboost.
Awesome tour video, jay has a great boat and is really well organized. However, i don't think i like the mast in the middle of the salon like that. However, it is a matter of choice. The importance here is that it is nice to have a friend like that to look after each other in the middle of the sea.
Fair enough!
I recommend, that you be prepared, for going south of the Equator. It's only warming half as fast, as the North. I expect lots of unrest, up North, when this Spring's crops come in, very very very short. I'm looking at the Rio Grand---the one in southern Argentina.
Right on.
Cheers!!!
Cheers!
Didn't know S2 made this boat. I have an 1980 S2 11c. Slightly bigger, somewht older. I have sailed SunShine solo from Florida(left in 2010) to the Philippines. Now in South Africa with crew, proparing to complete the Atlantic crossing and my second circumnavigation.
Many similariets between the boats. I am sure this 35c could do what SunShine has done.
Cool, yeah its a nice boat.
Total answered a question i had about wether or not you cross the Panama Canal
