She is so right about how just being outside makes you happy and helps with self care. Covid-19 and quarantining has definitely given everyone a new appreciation for the outdoors.

Taking time to look after yourself in times of stress and anxiety, which is also important to do and anyone should be allowed to do it if they feel they need to.

Great advice for self care! I think self care is a lot more simple than most people think. Because of social media, a lot of people think they have to spend a lot of money or indulge in over the top activities to practice self care, but that definitely isn't the case!

Yes! She's talking about the different between pseudo spiritualism based on materialism and real connection and self care. Really great. I wish more people realized how terrible stress is for you, and that the basics -- nutrition, sleep, movement, stillness -- are so simple.

Yes! Love this. 🙌 Self-care is my JAM! I coach a lot of clients through developing and prioritizing their self-care routines and the main thing I see is that the more drained, burnt out, anxious, tired, or depressed you are, the less energy you have to do the things that will make you feel better. Just like anything else, it gains momentum and can feel impossible to do what will help us feel better - even if we WANT to. It's important to remember that:
    A) It doesn’t have to be long and involved. It just has to be healthy.
    B) It doesn’t have to look like we’re told self-care looks. It just has to leave us feeling a bit better than when we started.
    C) There are plenty of options.
We have to focus on doing the things that’ll help you move the needle - even just a little bit.

This is good, but from my experience eating healthy and avoiding comforting things like caffeine, sugar, and alcohol is a battle, much easier said than done. I think people eat unhealthy things because they're stressed, they don't cause stress per se but they're not good for long term health and strength.

    • @JoannaDavis9301
      @JoannaDavis9301 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

It's a positive feedback loop. You're stressed so you eat comforting things, then because you aren't eating healthily or because those foods cause you to not feel good physically, you try to eat healthily but you no longer have those comforting foods which ease your stress so you relapse and binge on unhealthy foods and it starts over again. so they do cause stress just not in the nutritional way you are thinking about.

      How is this video gendered?
      1. Diet. Lessen the intake of sugar, caffeine & processed foods. Add plant based whole foods.
      2. Meditate. Practice stillness and silence. Let go of unnecessary thoughts. 5-10 mins a day.
      3. Movement. Helps you sleep and increases positivity. 10 mins a day.
      4. Nature. Reduce stress and improve sleep. 10 mins a day.
Practice 30 mins daily to support mood and increase energy.
Self care is catered to you.

Thank you for this TED Talk Susannah. I really appreciate it because I agree that the concept of 'self care' has got warped into some kind of 'package'. You've reminded me that true self care really is free - it doesn't need to cost anything at all. We don't require special equipment or the most expensive things in order to practice it every single day. All it takes is committing a little time and focus. I'm about to become a parent for the first time, and despite being incredibly excited about the challenge ahead, I know that self care will be even more important now.

Yay for earthing, totally agree with that, but the smug "start with the 5 hours a day most people are watching tv" ENRAGES ME. Talk about toxic. I know she said most, not all, but how about acknowledging those of us who work too hard and spend too much time parenting and keeping the house running to watch TV. We're the ones that *really* need the tips on self care.

I somewhat disagree with her, self care is doing whatever makes "self" feel relaxed, revitalized, refreshed, rejuvenated and relieved from stress and if that's a spa day it is what it is.
