Model Engineers Workshop Forum is full of bell ends. Any criticism they make is null and void. You are a professional and there was nothing wrong with that set up for drilling a hole. I for one have benefitted hugely from watching you, and machining is part of my professional life too, as well as a hobby.

whoever said that your X axis was loose wasn't being stupid because it did look very much like it was. however if you look carefully you can also see the column moving as well, i personally think it's you Ade, you don't know your own strength!. As for the people who complained about about your setup for drilling a 2.5mm hole, if they know better, why are they watching your channel. You have never to my knowledge claimed that you are providing a tutorial. I have been in the industry for 45 years and know just as much if not more than many, but I enjoy watching you and other peoples work on TH-cam as we all approach a job in different ways and its all about getting the job done and enjoying yourself. You always find certain people who love to complain and criticise others efforts, ignore them, it's not worth your effort. Keep doing what your doing Ade, I love your Videos, your very down to earth in your approach and they are always fun and interesting especially now your touching on steam which my main interest.

Ade, watching your videos is like dropping in to watch a mate fiddling around in his workshop, and as such the protocol is that said mate is entirely within his rights to talk a load of old tosh should he feel so inclined... it's his shed after all! Except you don't talk tosh! Sure that clamping would've been shaky if you were heavy milling an engine block, but hopefully anyone heavy milling engine blocks knows what they're doing! You just carry on doing what you do buddy... and I'll keep on hitting that 'like'. And thanks for letting me into your shed again, I promise I'll bring the beers one of these days (maybe) :)

Hi Ade. Don't pay any attention to anything posted on the Model Engineers Forum. Carl below nailed it with his description of them. If anything, treat it as a 'Badge of Honour' to be criticised by them. I caught some from them when I posted my videos on the Beer Keg Furnace. @@ade63dug On the criticisms, you made the most valid point of all - "its just one way this can be done."
I've been watching both Blondihacks and Joe Pieczynski's series on the PM Research #3. there were a few people stirring that pot and it was all BS in the end, because she's a semi-professional hobbyist with a hobbyist's shop and he's a pro with a pro shop. In between the pair of them were great examples by BOTH on how we can do things depending on our skill levels and experience and what our shops allow.
I'm about to have my lathe delivered 🤞🤞🤞 I probably wont have a mill for some time depending on what's available. I haven't done any machining in about 20 years and I want to start with a couple of these engine projects to get back into it. So seeing all these things done in different ways is actually a big deal for me. I learn a bit of every video I watch, some more some less, BUT I LEARN FROM ALL.

I myself participate in a forum, and I have to say, unfortunately, that many wise people are on the way and express their opinions whether they want to hear it or not. You've made a lot of videos that have enriched people and I very much hope that many more will follow. There is no reason why you would have to justify yourself for your work. I am an engineer myself and one thing I think is clear: an engineer is always right ;-)) Thank you very much for your videos and happy days! Frank

Ignore the haters, don't bow down to them. They love it when they get a reaction. You have enough experience and knowledge to use your machines safely. I also follow Quinn and Joe, and it's true everyone does things their own way, and provided we're happy and it achieves the desired result and nobody gets hurt it's OK. Regarding the criticism, some think themselves experts and feel obliged to point out perceived failings in others, they just can't help themselves.

No problems with your techniques and practice of them Ade, on the contrary; I recognize your tool room skills, others should take note, rather than criticize.
A few years ago, when our American cousins were all enthused with hand scraping machined ways, straight edges etc, several TH-camrs were showing complete garbage.
Having spent over twenty years standing by a bench, filing, fitting, scraping, then machining, press tool build and repair, I would call my self very competent, and able to comment, of course there are many more far skilled than me, and some who think they are skilled. But I can, and regularly learn new methods etc from non time served individuals. Moan over.

Hi Ade, Love your channel. My experience with those small hole gages is that particularly when you have them spread out near the top of the range for that particular gage, the ball "wings" are not very round and you have to fish around by rotating the gage to get the same feel as the hole when you put it in the micrometer for a measure. It's easy to measure a little small if you don't fish around for the high spot. Pins are best for small holes, but we can't all afford a complete set! For standard sizes like 1/4, I will sometimes measured a carbide end mill shaft and use that as a pin gage since they are usually a few tenths undersize.

    • @ade63dug
      @ade63dug  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes indeed , it is tricky to mic them up correctly at the 90 degree point to the spread . I have gauges from 10 though to 100 thou only from my press tool making days . Cheers Ade.

Sad start on this video but I agree with You. Your setup was well rigid for the operation You were doing. Total rigidity, prepared for a bomb attack is not always needed.
As You say, this was Your way to do it, and You didn't start machining yesterday.
Maybe machining is like hockey, football where "the best players" are the spectators. Sofa machinists, bridge sailors (those never loosening the ropes).
Time 14:30. Deburring using center a drill... Why not? I've been used to use conventional spiral drills until I got the proper tool.
Looking at 3 other tubers making steam engines, Joe Pie, Blondihacks and Learning Turning Metall I admit that thous(?) and inches went into one ear and out the other.

Now, my personal axe to grind is all the folks who use a center drill to spot holes on mill and a lathe when they are not going to use an actual center. Well, not an axe, actually I do not care if they spot their holes with a hot poker. Some of them pontificate about how that helps keep the hole nice and true, as the flutes are banging around on the edge of that 60 degree hole, LOL.

I’ve been doing this for over 50 years. I do setups in many different ways. When using a mill as a drill press with very small drills, the need for heavy clamping isn’t required. The part just has to resist the small amount of circular twisting force, and the breakout jump at the end, which in this case isn’t more than a few pounds. Even the light force exerted by your clamping on that easily exceeded 350 pounds between the two clamps, far more than needed for that operation.

Hi there, following along with great interest. I have made several models in the past, I am a retired toolmaker. A great tip in general is that if you have enough depth of thread, which in your case you did, is to drill the bolt clearance size for about 2 thread pitches first. Then drill the tapping size, this is done in professional engineering practice so that when a bolt is tightened it does not pull up a thread and make the mating surface un flat. It also allows you to get a nice chamfer on the hole. This is done to car engine blocks so that the head gasket will seal properly. It also allows the bolt to find the hole and start more easily than having an instant thread. Don't worry about people who criticize you, they are probably armchair non engineers and have nothing else better to do than write comments and probably give you thumbs down. I don't know why that they want a 7 BA hole tapped for 5/16" seems excessive as the maximum strength of any bolt is 2 X diameter, any more adds nothing. Stay Safe and keep on machining. Regards from Australia. 45 C today on 24 th January 2021.

Ade, I really appreciate your channel as I return to “metal bashing” after a career in Structural Engineering. I did mechanical engineering at College back in 1969/70 and remember the lecturers and technicians with fondness. Forgive the digression, criticism from Engineers is only too common, for my finals at Uni I wrote an essay on the role of the Engineer in society in which I made the point that Engineers are the only profession that queues up to stab each other in the back. Got a first for that. In practice as a Structural Engineer we often check other engineers calculations, I would never hear a checking Engineer say “I think that is a reasonable assertion”, more likely “Got him” over some minor mathematical minutiae.
On a more positive note remember if you ask a group of Engineers to multiply 2x2 you will get different answers but all will say “call it 4”. Keep up your excellent work, a pleasure to watch and learn.

The only thing to criticise is the casting and the undersize steel from Stewart.
The extra two hundred subscribers were probably model engineers, wanting to learn 😈.
Keep it up. From a old man with little hair, few teeth, and a mill and lathe in my shed.

    Hi ADE..
I have to take you to task, over the wobbly gangle pin!
It was at the right angle but the shift plate was out of sink with the potter ring...
The shaft spindle of the outer thrust bearing must be shimmed to the right tension and clamped correctly to the face of the far
face of the right hand side! And use a tumble driver to re-locate the plug bridge!
    lol

On my DRO I also use the SDM button to keep several different datums. Each one of the 999 can be zeroed for a new datum. It also helps when drilling or machining several locations with different tools so that you can locate the positions once with the absolute measurements and store the positions for when you come back with a different tool.

In the bush, here in Australia, you do what you have to do with what you have at hand. As long as it works for the desired outcome, no one hurt or the machinery not knackered - you have to say bugger off. Good on ya

Hey Adrian good day to you. Thank you for the shout out. I am sticking to the advice that you gave me which was, just have fun, I am having the time of my life. I am really yearning for a larger lathe and maybe more so in milling machine. I think my videos have improved .My confidence level is growing but as soon as my head gets too big I realize I need to learn how to part again. Most of what I am learning is to compensate for the deficiencies of the Chinese many lathe.
My dream is to get a PM940M milling machine. as seen on cloud 42s videos, as well as an 11 or 12 inch X 30-40 lathe.
    Cheers Kimber

Gday, congratulations on the 8k subs, certainly well deserved and many more, as for the “unsafe work practice” it’s your shop and you know what you are doing, if people watch your videos then they should realise that your not going to purposely do an unsafe method and risk breaking a cutter or damage you machines or bugger the job your working on, in the real world things don’t get done to the textbook, commonsense (which you certainly have) knew that there was no problem, well that’s how I see it mate, Awesome job as always Ades thanks mate, Cheers Matty

You think you've got clamp problems, last night I snapped a brand new 12mm cutter by rapid feeding into a clamp. Lost my zero on the job too I wouldnt let the kids eat today to claw back the cost!
I'm an amateur and you really take the time to explain your way do doing things, it opens my eyes to things I wouldn't have thought of. I think taking it as bible is a bit closed minded, I still try my own ways, some work better than others is putting it mildly!

You're doing a grand job, enjoying your build. In the context of what you were doing, drilling for M3 screws, your clamping was perfectly adequate. For me it's a bit disappointing Stuart cast in the bearing support pillars when in full size practice they would be separate. Amazing subscriber count and growing fast, well done!
