I have not even got my castings delivered yet but did buy the extra BA fasteners to replace the cast in. Made the little thumb tapping holder but hope aluminum will hold up since no brass round that diameter. Made two different die holders for the lathe on my first engine out of castings. Thanks for showing how you have done things.
Agreed - it looks so much better than the cast bolt heads. I also really like the bearings and I wonder why so few people do that on these engines. Its not that much extra effort and the alignment and running seem a lot smoother.
I agree. If you show this to anyone, they’re going to lean in close to see the details. If they don’t look real, then all the hard work was wasted. I’ve made ship models, and those tiny details are everything.
Nice job, Ade. Having real bolts, even if they are not actually doing anything looks so much better than the cast representations. I'm enjoying following this one. Mart in Solihull.
Great videos Ade, watching this series closely as I’ve got a S50 castings kit for my birthday. Will definitely being fitting real bolts on my base. All the best!
Nice video. As always, very entertaining, educating, inspiring.. Fine tap handle You made. I think Joe Pie made one like that. Drilling 2.1 it looks like threading M2.5, Did plenty of M3 tapping in my life, no tap follower, no vise, just laying on the floor, and never broke a tap. Now days.... support is like a safety belt.... Time 12:30. Using the chuck, first tap drilling, to hold the tap works fine. Letting the mill rotate a turn or two, depending on the tap size, and then applying a tap handle has worked fine. Time 17... Interesting tool to cut small screws. Yesterday I used the toolmakers vise to hold the screw, the bandsaw and filing the cut in 45 degree angle. Always work fine. Mentioning Blondihacks, Quinn Dunki, was fine. Lots of nice ideas. When she reaches our age she will be the same entertaining like You. Stiff fingers and small bolts... Leaving the youth everything gets stiff except one part....
Beautiful work on the base part there Ade. I do enjoy watching this miniature precision work. Really like the way those replacement bolt heads have come out.
Really nicely done Ade, I think replacing the heads has made a huge difference, they will look even better when they get a patina on them (will help them blend in). Cheers, Jon
Joe Pie does a good video on making a tap follower and a tiny tap handle..... all this little stuff amazes me as all my working life its been on the enormous side
I purchased the same wrench (spanner) set. I am happy with it also. I am enjoying watching this video series as I am repairing the same engine. Thanks for sharing.
Completely agree, the bolts make it look "more real". Looking nice. In other news, I finally got round to ordering a DRO. Hopefully it works as well as yours. Don't know if I'll make a video of the installation or not.
Shumae Ade, I've never come across that tap holder and follower before. Brillient !! there's always tension when tapping 8 or 10BA in the mill. I'll be making one of those today. Thanks for the tip. Cheers Jeff
A big improvement by removing the 'cast in' bolt heads, worth the effort. an aside tip for you, & others; if you keep the extra 6 mm cut off from the 7 BA bolt, put a saw cross cut into the sawn end & you have a 7 BA x 1/4 " grub screw to use on something else. I do that with all my bolt offcuts.
Nice video Ade. I have added making one of those tap spinners to my list of tools to make. I just need to get a. some free time. b. a scissor style knurling tool. c. some other more pressing things off of my to-do list. Those real bolt heads really make the model look better.
I'd have used studs and nuts as per full size practice, in the base. You can easily still do this as you have done the donkey work already, Ade. Kick it up a notch and do it! Or up two notches by using studs and square nuts. You know you want to.......! Cheers mate, nice work either way.
Ade, a bit of a tip for next time shortening the screws. Drill the block clearance size for most of the way and only tap the last 4 threads or so. In that way you can push the screw in and only need to rotate it the last few turns. Another bit of advice, when you have some spare cash, purchase the TUBEULAR BA spanner set, you will find them invaluable at times getting into confined spaces. They may also be known there as Box Spanners. Finally, if you can get a set of Number Drills, they often fill in for you odd Metric sizes. Some taping charts often give BA tapping sizes as a Number drill.
I'm enjoying this series, having just found it, so thanks for that 👍 I would agree the fake bolts are a no no, but should you not have used studs and nuts for the proper period look ?
The Tap wrench handle is a little ripper, makes a lot of sense for small taps rather than a handle type that breaks them if not careful. I will be copying that concept if you don't mind.
Hi Ade What a great little gadget for tapping the small threads.Like you said, it gives you that feel/control.Keep the vids coming. Have you made the Stuart Beam engine yet?
Nice job Ade. I wish I had your accuracy! I managed to do my S50 though, and went with studs rather that bolts... but definitely worth doing whichever way you go. This is my S50... th-cam.com/video/o1CjydHUoPw/w-d-xo.html Many thanks for taking the time to do this, and all your videos. ;)
Fabulous idea to change the cast bolt heads to real bolts. 👌👏👏
Your ‘button tap holder’ is inspired. 👍😀
This is a great little series Ade. The replacement bolts in the base look fantastic and really upgrade the looks. 👍

Gday Ades, it was definitely a good idea to get rid of the fake bolt heads, the base looks finished now, well worth the effort mate, Cheers Matty
Agreed - it looks so much better than the cast bolt heads.

Yes, the cast ones were cheesy at best. Alright I suppose if someone wanted to put in the absolute minimum of effort.
I agree. If you show this to anyone, they’re going to lean in close to see the details. If they don’t look real, then all the hard work was wasted. I’ve made ship models, and those tiny details are everything.
the joys of having a quill on your mill, my old Amolco mill i have to raise the knee.... keep promising myself an old Bridgeport or a Bridgeport clone
Hexagon heads look brilliant, great touch.
Thanks for sharing.

Coming along nice. Great idea putting real ba bolts in the base 👌

I thought the cast in bolts were a nice touch but I am with you that its top notch with the real ones
That base is looking awesome. Those bolts were an excellent choice
Cheers from Canada
Thanks 👍.
Thanks Ade A bit late to the party but loving this series. Some great tips and video quality is fantastic.
Thanks Ade just revisiting your channel, thanks for the micro tap holder idea. Cheers.
The tap follower was a required project in Trade school. I still have mine. Now I need to make that brass tap wrench. 👍🏻
Joe Pie does a good video on making a tap follower and a tiny tap handle..... all this little stuff amazes me as all my working life its been on the enormous side

totally looks much better with the bolts beautiful job
Hello Ade,
It look so much nicer with the real bolts, well done for taking the time to do it... I liked the taping button too.
Take care.
Paul,,

Nice to see other people who go above and beyond to make there projects look the part, nice job !!
Thanks Ade, look forward to the next vid,
Nice job Ade🏴👍
Adding the 'real 'bolt detail steps it up a notch.
Making some worthwhile improvements, especially the future oil cups. And you've convinced me that I should have a spring loaded tap guide!
Hi Nigel . I would love to see your take on making the tap guide . The Lion is looking great . Cheers Ade.
Nice effect replacing the fakes, and spot facing gives a nice finish look. I agrree that tap follower is a game changer. Cheers!
Shumae Ade, I've never come across that tap holder and follower before. Brillient !! there's always tension when tapping 8 or 10BA

That was excellent Ade thank you. The bolt detail looks superb. Looking forward to the next one. Hope you and your family are well.
Thanks for another excellent video Ade, love the little tap wrench.
Looks great Ade, keep up the good work.
nice work , like the idea of real bolts on, looks alot better
Same as everyone else Ade bolt heads = vast improvement. TFS, G :)
Nice attention to detail Ade.

Well done, the new bolts look great!
Yeah the real bolts are a definite improvement.
hi I plan to do that with my one when i start it regards bob
Hi Ade, Parcel in the post. Enjoy. Great video.

Did my shout out help on the previous video . ?
Yes I picked up a few subs , plus it did wonders for my Ego
Care package in your future. Cheers
Looking good ! 👍👍

Great ideas. The box spanners sound great . I have got a set of number drills on my radar . Just looking for a cheap source at present . Cheers Ade.
I'm enjoying this series, having just found it, so thanks for that 👍
I would agree the fake bolts are a no no, but should you not have used studs and nuts for the proper period look ?
I need to make one of those thumb wheels for these small taps. I haven't broken a tap yet, but then i haven't used the 7 and 8 BA yet
Thnx Ade looking good.
Hi, if you take your spring loaded tap alinger apart it might be double ended, male one end and female the other
The Tap wrench handle is a little ripper, makes a lot of sense for small taps rather than a handle type that breaks them if not careful. I will be copying that concept if you don't mind.
G’day Ade. Details look good but what tension do you set the bearing caps to:-)
Cheers
Peter
Hi Ade What a great little gadget for tapping the small threads.Like you said, it gives you that feel/control.Keep the vids coming.
Have you made the Stuart Beam engine yet?
Love the little tappy tool idea stolen and on my ttd list
Nobody really likes tapping small holes, other than Stephan Gottswinter. But fortunately, cast iron is an easy material to tap.
Real bolts look so much better than faux ones, what were Stuarts thinking?
Nice job Ade. I wish I had your accuracy! I managed to do my S50 though, and went with studs rather that bolts... but definitely worth doing whichever way you go. This is my S50... th-cam.com/video/o1CjydHUoPw/w-d-xo.html Many thanks for taking the time to do this, and all your videos. ;)
The fake bolt heads added absolutely nothing to the model engine other to make it look cheap and fake. Good riddance.
