Hey Mark, those mackerel backbones would have been delicious if you fried them up as well. They turn out to be fish flavored chips! And it works in the air fryer or oven too because the bones are oily enough to fry themselves with just heat!

Tip for cleaning and fileting fish. Ask for the ones buried in the ice if you're not too far from home. Or stick them in your freezer for 20-30 min. It keeps the guts together and the meat isn't as soft when you filet. By the time you finish cleaning the fish will be thawed and ready to cook.

You definitely have an affinity for some stronger tasting fish. Not my cup of tea but I definitely respect it. If there was a way to ship fish that wasn't ridiculously expensive, I would send you some GOOD stuff. It's incredible how much of a difference there is between "fresh" and FRESH.

Not everyone enjoys bland tasting fish… in fact, in many countries the people prefer the more fishy tasting fish like mackerel. My wife is from the Philippines and she would rather eat a “junk” fish like mackerel than a mild or bland tasting expensive fish. They love the strong flavor of oily fish and personally I do too!!! It’s also higher in good Omegas so it’s more healthy for you. I’m Japanese and we eat some mackerel raw in sushi and sashimi. It’s one of my favorites!!! Many Americans aren’t fish lovers so they mask the flavor of the fish by putting sauces on them. So please don’t put down others who like to eat “junk” fish because around the world you’re seriously outnumbered…

@@aragon2552 Great point!!! Chickens and pigs are normally raised in unhealthy conditions and we eat them anyways. Yet carp and other fish are considered nasty??? When I was stationed in Nebraska (USAF), I went to a restaurant that specialized in catfish and carp. My wife and I were blown away on how delicious the carp tasted. This is probably my favorite fish to eat. You should do a video on milk fish. They're super fatty white meat salt water fish that are way cheaper than even tilapia, but are more flavorful than cod or tilapia. They're very boney, but probably the tastiest cheap fish. I imagine they're really good for you as they're such a fatty protein.

Farmed Norwegian Mackerel? I've never heard of that. Is that a thing for export only? Because these fish are so frickin plentiful in my experience. Sometimes I catch more than I can eat and give away, with just a couple of rods. From land, not even on a boat. In Norway we usually eat them when they're small; we call the small ones "Pir". They are not as fatty then, but still strong tasting (and more fatty than the fish on the Boston mackerel it seems).

  • @MrSCOTTtheSCOT

All north atlantic mackerel are the same species the Norwegians don't farm mackerel , they just trawl huge amounts the only taste difference you might get is the fact your local Boston mackerel are caught locally, have travelled less and are a few days fresher , the worst thing i see these days is mackerel sold guts in , as soon as they are dead they start to decompose due to their high oil content, mackerel should be gutted as soon after catch and slammed on ice or if not using fresh within 48 hrs , smoked , salted or frozen , but then freezing can detract a bit of their taste after thawing, but many fishmonger now don't bother gutting for that extra sales weight . We catch them around the fish farms of scotland because they aren't daft when it comes to free food the summer shoals soon learn that the excess pellets from salmon cages are a high value free meal so any sea lochs with cages have chunky mackerel in them, Tasty smoked or salted too or on the bar B q with various marinades also gooseberry sauce goes well with smoked mackerel. As we can fill bin liners of them when the shoals are on, if desired , it's a balls to gut and fillet them all, but for the sake of a small amount of meat we V cut the pin bones out of the lateral line to save time though tweezing out the bones give a nicer fillet.
