      Used to always apologise for my accent until one of my bosses told me not to. “An accent tells me something about you. Perfect school English accent says nothing of you”. I still think my accent sounds funny in English but it was hearth worming to hear.

    As a linguist I can tell you why people adapt their accent accordingly: it has to to with establishing relational closeness, creating rapport. Every person in every situation adapts their idiolect (your own personal, unique pattern of pronunciation) to the person they are conversing with. Some people think it is a sign of a lack of character, but it is just very normal human behavior ;) However, language is also still riddled with perhaps a bit outdated ideas about status, elite, class et cetera, as if there is a 'proper' way to speak, as if you can classify people judged on their accent. I have lived in an area of the Netherlands where people speak with a different 'g' sound than the harsh Dutch sound, and it would betray that I am from another part, and people would start apologizing, it frightened them a bit! Very strange experience. Also, if you speak to me shortly I have a very English sounding ('normal') accent and British people would ask me "which part of England I was from" and I would say: "I'm Dutch" and they would be very embarrassed. (ah...British people ;-))
    I now mainly speak English with one of my best mates who is from Glasgow so I hear Scottish elements in my own speech...et cetera et cetera! I used to work as an English teacher and have lived in Yorkshire for a while and when I was back in the Netherlands all of a sudden I noticed I was teaching the children in a Yorkshire accent! This was quite funny, actually, these Dutch kids saying "bus" ('boos') and "sunglasses" ("soonglahhssis") ... couldn't help myself. So...such a joy, such interesting, human speech, linguistics!

      +annedien Accents in speaking are very interesting. My grandparents are from Germany and lived in North Carolina. I spent much time with them and German was spoken in the house but English outside of it. In speaking German I have the German accent. Yet in English it is obviously southern. Many people have asked when they learn my background why I have no German accent. But I went to school with southern english speakers and they were my friends. I adopted how they talked. People have no idea just how fast a person will adopt an accent.

    • @annedien
      @annedien 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not everybody's talent to adopt an accent ;)

    • @skitman1958
      @skitman1958 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting, because I would have thought it would have been. But when your first language is at times a mix between two then that can create confusion. That was however many years ago, and I really have no need for the German now. My father was not much for speaking it except to his mother, father and brothers. I miss it in some ways. You come in from talking with your playmates in one language and then start in another. My friends were always fascinated when they would visit and hear us talking in German, and I would explain to them what my Grandfather had said. Usually when I had forgot to do something and he did not want them to know.

However, I found this to be the most endearing and watchable. The last section, when you discuss your occupation is, in my opinion, your best piece ever to camera. The manner in which you engage the listener appears authentic; you speak lucidly - whilst you are not appearing to deliberate in order to impress a listener with flowery vocabulary. I am sure you are genuine in your strategy to be something of a renaissance man, hoping you have a positive effect upon others. Nevertheless, that last section appeared to be the real you - and was extremely engaging.

    I really appreciate your videos and I enjoy them more perhaps for your extemporaneous delivery than for the information sometimes. I think you've got some great ideas, thoughts and philosophies You've become a bit of a hero to me, and I'm hard to impress - honestly I started watching you because I was looking for a review of a watch I liked, and here I am listening to you talk about everything but watches for a half an hour at 4:00 am and enjoying it. Keep doing what you're doing and don't sweat it when people criticize. I almost feel like you should make another channel on civility itself. Carry on being exceptional.

    Thanks for the openness and insights into who you are. It gives an extra level of connection to you that adds to the enjoyment of your channel.
    By the way, your accent is just fine in my book and I can identify with your comments concerning it to some extent. I grew up in a small town in eastern Tennessee with a southern accent with a bit of an Appalachian twang thrown in. That faded as I left to go out into the world in my early 20s and I now have a neutral American accent--the sort you might hear on network television. I can't even intentionally duplicate the original accent anymore, although people tell me that I slip back into it when they hear me in a phone conversation with someone from the area where I grew up.

    Thanks for the information and the little peak behind the curtain, as it were into what makes you tick😉. I really enjoyed hearing about your accent and the influences behind all the subtle nuances. The phenomena that created your particular variations that come and go which change depending on location as well as the speaking patterns and languages of those around you, especially those that had a great impact on your language learning when you were young are known in developmental psychology and linguistics by three terms, each which denote slight variants on a similar causal effective result which are as follows: local coloring, selective coloring, protective coloring. From listening to the information you provided and the helpful background, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed btw, as well as your great demonstrative examples of each it is quite clear to me that as with myself all three play a large part with your lingual variations and distinctions, the largest part being with protective coloring which is how our language patterns and accents change on a mostly subconscious level depending on who we are with , though over time and with experience we become more aware that it' is occurring and are able to assert more control over it thus decreasing it's dominance. Also, have to say how much I love your channel to which I am a subscriber and frequent viewer, and enjoy every bit of knowledge, experience, and personality you bring to horology and enlightening the rest of us not yet indoctrinated into it's great history and all the amazing pieces out there for us to enjoy along with the little tidbits and snippets that add so much personality, color, and flavor to it all. Thanks, and please don't ever quit.

    Great video Tristano, always a joy watching your videos👍 Taking about accents, although I generally speak with a North Welsh accent, when I was a small child my teachers in Primary told my mum I spoke with an Italian accent, which I found surprising at the time. But from time to time I notice I sometimes have an Italian twang when I say 'thank you' like 'thenk you' just like the way my mum says it.

    Sir,
    I am a homeless veteran, who is getting into watches and your take on life has given me a little smile and hope. My depression will bring me back to being somewhat hopeless but I want to thank you for the minute or two of an internal smile.
    The watches that I am looking at is the Oris GT or Aquis. The reason I am getting them is to try to make me feel a little better about myself.I wanted a watch that Horologists would appreciate, where I can swim with it at the beach or pool, not so flamboyant that someone would want to rob me, but tough enough to ware everyday. I am leaning towards the Artix. I did think of the orient mako or the seiko monster gen ll but I think the non-rational ego part of me likes a swiss made auto movement.
    I really don't have the money for it but a life with food and not being happy is worse than being happy for a short time. I have lived for 3 years on the street and not been happy. I need just a little time of happiness.
    Quality is better than quantity.
    And yes I too believe as you do. I have traveled the world; lived in Spain for two years, visited London, Paris, Turkey, Azores, and been to every state but North Dakota so I have seen a chunk of life, the US is a place where any person can have nothing and become a person of means.
    Most countries do not bend over backwards to help a foreigner like we do. One only has to have drive and learn where to get the info. As bad as the US is, it is the land of hope.
    I, as a man who has been beaten down so much, have lost all hope. But I can still smile and you brought a smile to my face.
    Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
    And to those of you who will tell me to get a job. I have tried. Some people won't forgive a person with a felon. I even went to college while homeless but had to stop because it was hard to do home work at times. I was an art major. My depression does not help either. And I do not do drugs or drink, hence the opportunity to buy my dream watch.
    As TGV says, let's focus on the positive.

    Public self disclosure is always a two edged sword. Some listeners will be enemies; some will endear themselves to you and will hold a robe to place around your bare shoulders. I have just viewed this two and a half years after your post. I'm grateful to see this because you have influenced me. This past year I got into horology and I bought a few watches, including Seiko SNK809 at your suggestion. My wish for you is to learn from retrospect and continue to grow. Two kinds of truth: seed and pearls. Seed is for all; pearls for those you trust. Cast the seed broadly. Share the pearls discreetly. And thanks, I love my Seiko.
