    1 ) buy what you love
    2 ) marry the woman you love, not for your family or friends

      I took your advice and I'd like to say thank you. I picked up the most comfortable watch I've ever worn since my Casio a158 classic steel, the seiko5 snk357 blue 36mm😍.
      Had a recent strange NEED to own a gold watch😐🤷 and picked up the perfectly subdued gold watch I've ever seen, Seiko5 snxl72. it's perfect 37mm textured pattern dial not flashy. Put it on and I'm instantly sent back to the 70's😁
      -also added a blue snxs77🐍 with that UFO case. Unreal watches at these prices . Thanks again mate🍻

    In the summer of 1988, I was walking with my would-be wife in Lucerne. We passed by a Bucherer store and noticed a Rolex Submariner (ref. 5513 no date) for sale, only 1,550 CHF of the time.
    I didn't know the reference and didn't research that watch.
    However, I liked the aesthetics and bought it on impulse.
    Now, 31 years later of pure love, both with the watch and with my wife, it has become a very desirable and collectible reference. Besides having enjoyed the timepiece all this time, it has also become an investment (a kind of) since I will never sell it because it reminds me of that wonderful weekend I spent with my girlfriend a few months before getting married.
    Ciao from Italy.

    Good tips! As a young man I loved the Tag Heuer Carrera watches; It took me 8 years to save and finally got myself a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 watch. I wear to work almost everyday! It is like true love. It is definitely a relationship I have with my watch as it reminds me how I researched, worked and saved for it.

    Excellent presentation! This should be a perquisite for all watch newbies. I just got into the hobby about a year ago and one of the first things I did was buy a few cool looking watches with no research at all. Which is totally unlike me. If I had it to do over again I would have taken my time and probably picked completely different models. Some looked great on line, but not too great on me. As for the watch snobs, they occupy all parts of society. Motorcyclists, bicyclists, you name it. There is that fringe group in each hobby that gets pleasure denigrating others who don't have precisely the same taste. I started my own channel recently and have reviewed $20.00 Chinese pieces. Quarts, solar, kinetic, and hamster driven. If you enjoy something that is all that matters. Keep up the good work!

    another great video, and many of those points I also found in the last 7 years that I contracted this 'disease'.
    After going thru many watches from cheap to mid range expensive (where I live a Rolex is only a dream) I have sold out almost my entire collection and am left with 2 daily wearers an SNK805 and a DW5000 G-Shock and a vintage Doxa as a special occasion dress watch (it was a gift from my wife). I've learned that the SNK suits my wrist the best and I am not afraid to wear it as it was cheap to buy and so it has been with me for more than 5 years and it still makes me happy when I wear it!

    I love your videos! I found "grey market" watches are just "new watches" at a lower prices. A new watch is the same regardless of where you buy it from. A warranty will always be a hassle regardless the retailer. For many watch models like a Seiko 5 which won't have issues in a lifetime, a warranty is less useful.

    Or sometimes "true love" is when you buy it.....love it at first....then hesitate...sell...buy others....remorse sets in....start missing the sold watch.....and then buy it again because you realise that it actually was "the" watch.

  • @dbmusicz
    @dbmusicz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    To read a bit between the lines, I think most of the time in this video, you didn't even talk about watches per se. When I listen to you talking about watches, I see an expression of deep passion for something, it resonates in almost every word, every expression of yours. I think it's quite rare seeing something like this.
    Within that deep appreciation one finds the essence of life itself. From watching your videos, I can tell that you really LOVE watches. That love you, probably not only, but also found in wrist watches is absolutely contagious because of how almost emotionally you express it.
    I know next to nothing about watches but you really made me want to buy one. Not just buy one for the sake of having it, but rather get one to experience and share the same passion that you express.
    Well done.

  • @joespart4782
    @joespart4782 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This probably a combination of some of your points . But I read something a long time ago which stuck with me when I was buying watches. "The most expensive watch you will ever buy is the one you get INSTEAD of the one you really want." What I mean is that sometimes people can't afford the watch they want and will settle for an alternative . But that "grail" watch will eat away at them and eventually they will get it and the watch they bought will never get worn again. Better to just wait and save for the one you really want. Secondly I partially disagree with your "don't buy a watch to check boxes or complement a collection " i am actually at that stage where I have a pretty nice collection and now when I look to buy a watch I make sure it doesn't have any or very little overlap with any watch I currently own . Because if I buy another diver it needs to be different enough for me to want to wear it vs say my submariner or seiko or citizen divers etc. This has prevented me from wasting a ton of money buying watches too similar to ones I already own. Otherwise great video with good advice .

  • @rinkazu3798
    @rinkazu3798 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know if that is a mistake but I didn't even know what I was wearing when my father gifted me a beautiful chronograph swatch and I didn't really pay much attention or took care of it. So now that I do know how to appreciate watches, I regret not being more careful with it and am struggling to find a suitable replacement strap for the watch as the strap is very particular when it comes to sizing and form. I personally only buy a watch when there's an important event that happened in my life. I bought my first casio watch when I finally got admitted to University. I just like it when my watches have special memories related to them even if the watch itself isn't impressive or even maybe 'boring', they are special to me.

It is from the 60s I believe, in mint condition with a gorgeous sunburst dial and has been keeping better time than my Oris Artelier wristwatch! The best thing is it cost me £20.
    James.

    TGV I agree with the investment comment. It's The SAME thing with classic cars. Cars, like watches, are designed to be used. Many car guys look down on the cars kept in garages and never driven around. they eventually break down once daylight shines and in the end are just lawn ornaments.

    Great advice for watch buying and life in general. Excellent point on ticking boxes, I felt like collecting one of every kind, dress, sport, diver, chronograph, pilot etc. And my list of grails reflects it. Also as a way of self control, I have decided to only keep the main list under 7 watches. One for every day of the week. I do have much lower priced and amazingly made watches I've collected over the years that I don't count towards the 7. For example: a citizen nighthawk, bulova accutron alpha, gshock dw6900 etc.

    I've got into appreciation of timepieces quite recently and fashion watches was my gateway. But one of the biggest mistake I made was buying $400-600 watches without consideration that I may get tired of the design pretty quickly. So now I have several swiss and german watches gathering dust, while I wear cheap quartz that I really like aesthetically.
    My lesson was learned and now I don't buy anything decent until acquiring a quartz homage of it and use it for a while.

    I always wanted a watch that could tell me the exact time. And I mean THE EXACT time. And so I was jealous of the high end watches because I thought that they were the most precise watches out there. But then I found out what the expected loss /gain of a watch is and I stopped being jealous. Then I started benchmarking my own watch ( some SWATCH, it was a present, I don't know the model but after a lot of research I believe it costs 170-230 €) and after the course of a month I figured that it had the expected accuracy of a certified quartz chronometer! After 9 years of my wearing it almost every day, It was losing between 0.014 and 0.015 seconds per day depending on conditions! Now, a year later, I am still proud of it.

    Debt: this is a tricky topic, TGV. Given the level of household debt in the major consumer markets worldwide, if only people without any personal debt bought watches, the industry would be gone tomorrow! Of course, you are right. It is more satisfying buying personal goods when you are debt free. It's worth noting, however, that many people who consider themselves debt free are anything but. Especially when one factors mortgages and business debt into the equation. Come to think of it, I know of almost no wealthy people that aren't leveraged to the hilt. It seems the way wealth is grown in the modern world.
    What are your thoughts on this?

    I recently started watching your videos because I have acquired many watches over the years; mainly gifts from family and close friends. Almost all my watches are quarts battery operated and love them but, after a couple of years when the batteries need replacement, I don’t wear them anymore due to the cost of battery replacement. I have some nice watches one being an Omega Seamaster automatic 1962 vintage in excellent condition I started wearing a few months ago and fell in love with the automatic movement again. Your videos bar none; have awaken me on collecting automatic watches I can afford like Seiko. You are a true professional in explaining every aspect from buying a watch, details of a watch and buying a watch you can afford. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos. God Bless.

    Hi TGV, very sound advice there, thank you! My experience of a silly imopulse buy: I saw a good deal on a Hamilton Jazzmaster H32715531 on Ebay, flicked through the seller's specs, briefly checked current prices, sent a Best Offer and won it. Only when I researched the specs online did I realize that the size was was wrongly stated as 42mm instead of the 44mm it actually has. Too big for me. Also, it's 3 weeks later and I hate the dial I initially loved. So I will be flipping it and I am humbly going back to research, i.e. looking for true love!

    I absolutely agree with your point about being afraid of wearing a watch. A number of years ago I bought a Land Rover when the Discovery II model had just come about.
    It was a beautiful vehicle in Woodcote green, and I had the dealership put in the entire expedition package (full racks, brush guards, etc.)
    One of the first things that I did after accepting delivery was to run it out to the desert (Scottsdale, Arizona area) and take it through a rather large Palo Verde bush so that it received scratches from its thorns. After that I was comfortable taking it anywhere. It was a SUV to be used, not coddled.
