6 Month Weight Loss Fitness Secrets, Before & After, My Battle With Health & How I Changed My Life

  • As I always say, onwards and upwards, and in that spirit, today I return to the wider spectrum of more "gentlemanly" subjects that I originally started this channel with. I share a very personal story of how I changed my life using fitness and a strict routine, and overcame my battle with severe health problems. I was able to get through the toughest of times because I unlocked and tapped into an intense amount of self discipline and resilience that I never knew I had. I discuss my secrets to how a controlled diet, exercise, a stringent workout plan and motivation can help you lose weight, get into the shape you want, become a more productive person, and above all have a happier, improved life.

Lost a ton of weight (100+ pounds), and gained it all back, three times now.
I've had all those excuses "I dont have a desk job, I'm on my feet all day." Yet downing sodas all day.
"I walked around today, that's exercise. I'm not going to the gym."
"I'm tired. I'll go to gym tomorrow."
That's it. Today is the day, 8:16pm central time. I'm changing my body. And permanently this time.
    No excuses.

My favorite hack (and I just started the video, maybe it's in there) is to not stop bad habits, but to replace them with a less-bad habit. Because we should all drink water, but starting with diet soda (barely better!) let's you jump to sparkling water, then finally to plain. The jumps are easier, less distressing, and - most importantly for me - they let me build momentum.

You need to change your diet, not a "gym habit". If losing weight - diet is 100% what you need to focus on. Nothing else.

    • @anonguy6453

@@ilove2learn783 Nothing else? That's absolutely absurd. Do you even know what a caloric deficit is? How do you expect to be in one sitting on your ass all day? You might want to stop giving advice my dude because that's just total garbage.

I'm a distance runner...but have to say that Cardio isn't the be all end all for losing weight. The most efficient exercise for weight loss is the one you keep doing. The best "diet" for weight loss is the one that you can continue. Everything else you mentioned is spot on.

TGV, thanks very much for this video. I was injured in Afghan in 2008, i had a cracked vertebrae, collapsed lung, fell into a coma and my body went auto immune and subsequently now have a chronic nerve pain disorder. I spent a few years in a wheel chair and on steroids and my weight blew up. As time went on i would get fit then have a flair up which would see me put into a ketamine coma for a week or so followed by another month in hospital. The battle starts again.
I found this very motivating Sir, many thanks

Like Tristano, I love watches, but I am really glad to see a non-horological video for once. I like the variety. I would be happy if about 25% of channel output was not watch related. The variety was one of the draws of the channel in the early days for me. It differentiates TGV from the other channels out there. It's clear TGV is more than a one trick pony so it's nice to see him stretch his creative legs so to speak. Keep up the good work guv!

Your very inspiring man. Your right about the cardio. I used to do a ton of cardio and felt better. It helps with everything spiritually, mentally, and physically. The hardest part about anything is starting it.
Also, if you feel better and you have good thoughts the law of attraction takes effect.
Glad to hear your doing better man.

Very good video, TGV. Absolutely perfect advices!
I had the opposite problem, I was too too skinny and working out helped me getting in shape, I obviously used weights, but I'm completely self taught and I did a lot of cardio to remain athletic. I used to run for 10/15km and when you finish it and the endorphins start to run in your body, it's one of the best sensation in the world. As you said the most important thing is consistency, without that, you don't go anywhere.
One of the best video so far, it's right, we take for granted too many things.
    Stay healthy, my friend!

    Michele.

Man, You cannot believe how I love it that finally someone adresses this issue! I am a Belgian PE & Movement Sciences student and I can tell you once you know the benefits you really put time and effort in it! By the way not only cardio gives you benefits but also maximal strength (and in your case a little bit of muscle gain would actually improve your basal metabolism!). I got into this because when I was young I had severe astma during exercise and worked extremely hard and got rid of it! Succes to all of you guys combatting your challenges!

Great video, thanks very much indeed. I am 54 y/o and a former British Army physical training instructor (PTI). At various times I have been exceptionally fit and also out of shape in my life. I can relate to illness/injury causing "speed bumps" in life, including in maintaining decent fitness. I travel a lot and it seems like airplanes are terrible for recycling the air and passing around germs. I have had a lot of injuries, from breaking my pelvis in six places, to rotating vertebrae, to broken knees and ankles, torn tendons, etc. Plus I was an asthmatic as a kid and have always been susceptible to lung issues. If everyone else gets flu, I will get flu and then bronchitis in pretty short order. I always seem to have at least a little fluid on my lungs. It's always been that way, even when I was a PTI. Once, I was on a covert patrol on a massive training exercise (I was infantry) and had to infiltrate into the "enemy" position at night, then lay-up and report on troop movements undetected. I already had the flu as my team and I patrolled in and was suppressing coughs every few minutes (you learn to cough almost silently). The place we were laid-up in was essentially a marsh/swamp. It was around 15 degrees C during the day and went down to just above freezing at night. We laid there for over 48 hours doing our job. We were a mess when we ex-filled out of there; all of us pretty much hypothermic and I ended up getting pneumonia and pleurisy. It was awful. I was bed-ridden for a couple of weeks and it messed me up for a long time. Fast forward 25 years to a year ago, I got flu, the bronchitis (as usual) and then it just would not go away. Turned into pneumonia and pleurisy (again). I was laid-up for around three weeks. I was so week after that, and couldn't even think about working out without my blood pressure going through the roof. It was so frustrating. The discipline really became to manage my expectations (pretty tough being so Type-A) and just let myself heal over time. I felt like an old man! Slowly, but surely, though, I started letting myself get back into physical activity, first with just hill walking, then hill walking with a little weight, then some jogging, a few light weights, and so on. It was depressing as my weight were less than half what I had been used to before and my cardio was garbage. The trick was to stay positive, nt beat myself up and just take it slow to both avoid injury and realise small victories as I progressed. Today, I did half an hour on the elliptical, maintaining my heart rate at just over 140 BPM and then I did half an hour of weights (moderate weight/reps). I felt like a million bucks afterward. My energy levels are back up. I'm sleeping far better, my attitude is vastly improved, and I am far sharper, mentally. I will also say that I ascribe at least some of my improvement to the fact that I have been taking high-potency cayenne pepper in a little warm water and lemon juice twice a day for the last six months. Talk about leveling out my vascular system. It's awesome! You are bang on about sugar. Horrible/terrible stuff. A can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar - almost ten teaspoons of sugar. If someone saw you put half of that in a cup of coffee, they'd think you were insane. Yet, there are people out tere drinking several cans of pop (Canadianism)/soda a day. Crazy! Thnks so much for your videos. You're a gent. :-)

BRAVO! I watch your videos everyday and find you to be an extraordinary young man in so many ways. I am around 29 years older than you however, I learn something every time I watch. I love your knowledge of watches and your taste and style. But what I find to be a breath of fresh air from this video and others are your values. I feel many people I meet at your age do not have what I would call "good values" In my heart and mind your values all add up to being a special person. I also have many health issues and I also lost a lot of weight 131lb/59kg and now feel so much better. I know the struggle well so, my hat is off to you for getting it done at such a young age. You are now and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers CHEERS, Kenny

Lately things have not gone smoothly in my life with my career and in other departments. I'm going to start right now (not tomorrow or later) to set up a routine no matter how that annoying lazy voice in my mind makes this excuse and that excuse, I'm doing it. Dear Tristano. I am of course watch enthusiast. My first watch was Victorinox Alpnach 🙂 I would like to tell that you opened my eyes about the watches and i am really glad what are you doing and what kind of person you are.
Unfortunately half year ago they cut me a tumour and found a melanoma cancer, now its spreads to the brain and on Monday i have a surgery and then continue my fight. If something will go wrong i just wanted to thank you what kind and gentleman person you are and that you changed my views on watches and lets say it how i feel it You changed my life to be a better person and a gentleman. (not that i wasn't :D) . And i would like to thank you for it. Please send me a lot of positive energy on Monday. Thank you bless you🙏🙏🙏

    Great vid!!
    I get what you say....
I was pretty big two years ago. Around 235lb, bench pressing 400lb at 45 years old.
Then, two motorcycle accidents in the same year got me demotivated. Just having to go through the whole thing again, to get back to what I was...
The pain lasted for a few months, and I couldn't do much. When I finally got back, I had lost weight, strength and muscle mass. And had gained some fat.
But I will get back to it, with cardio, which I haven't done since forever....
I was at the Paralympic Games twice this week, here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. And that's when you realize that you really don't have any problems!!!
Any problem that you might have, anything that makes you complain, it's nothing compared to what they go through!!
That sure is a source of inspiration..... Like you said.... I can do it, so, why wouldn't I do it?
It was a great video. I hope you never have to get through that again!!
    Best of luck!!

3 months ago, I could do about 3 pushups, I was morbidly obese (6'1"/263 pounds), I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol/triglycerides. Through diet change (not dieting), mild exercise (bad knees with one that has very little mobility), and a major attitude change, I've lost over 30lbs, brought my cholesterol from 275 to 135, lowered my blood pressure to normal and now feel better. My goal is another 25-30lbs weight loss and hopefully, a much longer life. I'm 56 yo and I'm hoping for another 30 years at least! Good for you for getting better and healthier. I love watching your videos. You're the best on TH-cam!

You don't know how much you helped me. You were the person that motivated me 9 months ago to loose 44 lbs. When I started my journey I had 207 lbs, now I'm at 165 lbs and still going. I first started just with cardio for the first 3 months and then I moved to weight training. I just want to say that you are the person that inspired me to change my life, now I just can't imagine how my life would be without fitness. Thank you!

I really applaud this video, thank you so much for it.
You've really been through the mill with these operations, OMG!
    My formal training was Anthropology.
Homo Sapiens developed as a scavenger. We are Omnivores, we can pretty much eat anything. But we were pretty crappy at hunting game, we didn't have the tools, or teeth for it.
My point is this, the human condition of day to day,...was one of constant hunger...with brief spats of gorging and fulfillment.
But "hunger" was our constant and normal condition.
So, in our modern society where we treat hunger as a condition to immediately erase and eliminate, we gain weight.
I feel that if we can condition our brain to accept the "hunger meme" as the NORMAL state, sort of reverse our tendency to quell the hunger, we will attain a healthier body.
Do I do this? Oh hell no, I love to eat and drink!
But your insights brought my comments to the surface.
    Cheers.

Underrated comment. i have been taught since childhood to always eat when i was hungry. first world issue: i guess we never starve.
Since adulthood whenever i try to change my diet in order to lose weight, nothing works. When i learnt more about fasting and someones experience, hunger was seen as something to endure. it was like a lightbulb just switched on.
i cant lose weight if i always eat when hungry, as taught since childhood. and there is not much you can do to stop hunger without eating. in other words i MUST feel hungry when losing weight.
now there are always concerns when people fast and refuse to eat even when hungry. as long as you remain healthy and strong, being hungry is really fine. Change your diet to maintain your health, not to suppress hunger.

Great advice - I'm right there with you on cardio, absolutely! My thing is cycling - great workout, easy on the joints, get to see a lot, fresh air... I also can HIGHLY recommend martial arts such as Aikido - something I've been doing for many years. Besides all the other benefits the workouts are great. By the way keep these non-watch videos coming. I always enjoy them. It adds another dimension to your channel. Ciao, John

    - very low metabolism
    - loves to eat. ate almost all the time. eats fast
    - gained lots of weight after quitting smoking
    - struggling with depression and anger/temper
    - doesn't want bulk just wants cardio/lean physique
    - hates the gym
    .etc etc
yeah this is basically me. quit smoking over a year ago and gained lots of weight between that and also depression with both covid and losing my father to cancer. really started to hit rock bottom recently and it finally gave me the push to make drastic changes in my daily life. i'm only a few days in so far but i do feel the momentum and drive is there this time (much like the day i decided to quit smoking cold turkey). doing mainly cardio (to improve stamina) and greatly reduced my food consumption and also started doing intermittent fasting which whenever i did always helped me feel more energized.
so far i'm very happy with my changes, and something i did notice which did not expect at all is because of my reduction of food (both portions and frequency) whenever it's time to eat, it's my favorite moment of the day. i take my time to really appreciate the food i'm eating (most of the time) because i know i can't just go eat something whenever i want. i think my relationship with food and exercise is the real problem. i have to shift my perceptions into a healthier mindset which thankfully is already happening.
thanks for sharing your experiences. i know this is 6 years later but i figured i'd share my own experience with you and anyone else who reads this.

I’m hoping you never have any lung problems again. I’ve been turning my life around with exercise, giving up soda, and eating much better. I still have problems when waking up in the early afternoon (I work overnight) and motivating myself to workout can be tough. I’m planning to retire this year at 49 years of age from the subway train system in Boston, MA. I’m sure I will work again within a few years but I really want to concentrate on my health first. I don’t have coffee every day but recently I’ve stopped adding sugar and find it tastes better without. I’m glad I watched this one for it was very inspirational all that you’ve gone through. I noticed that when I wanted a second helping of dinner, if I just waited 10 minutes after eating the first plate, the hunger feeling went away. Just give your body time to recognize that it's been fed. About half of the time I go to the gym, I really don't feel like going. Just don't think about it. Don't think about how much you don't want to go. Just go. Once you're there you feel better about going and once you're done with your workout, you're always always always happy you did it.

Very kind of you to sharing this video, TGV. For me, I've struggled a long time of motivating myself to exercise. It's strange, because back in the days I used to play hockey for 8 years. I was in absolute tip top shape back then. But when I quit hockey at an age of 17, I went from having a life dominated by sports to nothing in terms of exercising. It was like night and day. Since then, motivation has been my nemesis. Until 2014 - when I discovered cross-country cycling. What really got me into it was because it's fun; when you're out in the trail you don't think of how hard and tired you are. It's such fun that you actually forget that you are training! Now I'm 24 and I'm happy that I got back to living an active and athletic life.

You should look into intermittent fasting, Tristano. "The small meals" thing is something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. I'd rather eat nothing for 16 hours and then eat all my food in the remaining 8, or even 4 hours. But hey, there are many ways to create a calorie deficit. IF basically got rid of my cravings. I got more hunger pangs eating 5 times a day like most people than I do now, eating basically one giant meal and two smaller portions.

Congratulations for your Perseverance, and Fortitude. "Onwards...and Upwards". I found your life and health challenges to be very similar to mine. After getting out of Grad School, I returned to New York... new suits...new briefcase...the World at my feet. On my way to a meeting... I had difficulty breathing... everything went dark from the pain... and 10 hours later... I woke up in the hospital connected to several machines ; a ruptured intestine. These experiences remind us... that if we have the time to enjoy a fine meal... a beautiful watch... appreciate a nice briefcase... or just go for a walk... all else is secondary. God Bless... and Best of Health.

I am in better shape now, at 41, than I have been in my whole life. I was a warehouse worker for roughly 20 years, but now I just do more yoga. My wife and I have just started push ups believe it or not. I am down to 162. My goal is to be this in shape the rest of my life. The days that I don't want to do yoga are the days when I get the most out of it. I have tendonitis in my left knee, so getting through pain, I get it. Winter is tough for me. I don't take pain medicine, because they aren't good for the body. Yoga helps with breathing and pain release.
