  • The hymn 'He would valiant be' written by John Bunyan (1628 - 1688) and adapted by Percy Dearmer (1867 - 1936), set to the tune MONKS GATE, from an English folk song adapted by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958).
    This was sung at the Service of Thanksgiving for the life of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, which took place at Westminster Abbey on Tuesday 29th March 2022.

    What a great hymn of commitment to Christ our Saviour. I remember singing the hymn just once in high school and never got to sing it until 38 years after, when I found it online. I draw immense inspiration meditating on each stanza of the hymn. The weapons of our warfare are indeed mighty through God. He is our strength and fortress. Keep the faith! I should also say that the trumpets added to the sublimity of the hymn.

    Dad loved the Westminster Abbey Choir & the King's College Choir because he underwent his Senior Cambridge Music Certificate Classes straight from Cambrige, London and his exam paper were sent from Fiji to marked there in Cambridge and sent back to Fiji. Most of the times King's College Choir sing at Westminster
    Dad was raised straight after birth by his Uncle, his mother's brother who was a METHODIST Catechist far from his island from 1934-1952, used to remind me, it is in the classical Hymns, The Holy Spirit inspired Holy Sanctified Men & Women to write & compose these Divine Inspired Classical Hymns, and in Singing or listening to them, You meet God while singing it inductively & meditatingly🙏.
    While Growing up as a tiny toddler, my Dad played only The Westminster Abbey Choir from England & King's College Choir till at 10 years old than included Centenary Methodist Church Choir of Suva Fiji, till today, though he taught me to be a Sabbath Keeper. He was the only Senior Cambridge Music Student of Queen Victoria School of Fiji from 1947-1952 where their Exam Papers are marked in England. Below are his beliefs in Classical Hymns;
    PART 1:- THE BIBLICAL FACTS OF INSPIRATION OF THE ANNOINTING OF THE PROTESTANT CHURCHE'S CLASSICAL HYMNS🙏🙏🙏. Dad WAS THE CHOIR CONDUCTOR FOR THE FIJI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE METHODIST CHAPEL CHOIR FROM 1953-1959? WHOM the Late Dr. Manoa Masi stated that Dad taught him Music. This was verified and supported & witnessed by the renowned Methodist Reverend Sotutu in 2008 at Novotel confirming Dr. Masi's [Renowned Methodist Church in SUVA Choir CONDUCTOR] claim that Dad was his Tutor while at FSM and Dad was the only Senior Cambridge Music Student from 1948 to 1952 at QUEEN VICTORIA SCHOOL:-PART 1. Westminster Abbey has its own choir for all its services. They produce their own recordings. King's College Choir serves the chapel of King's and does not sing at Westminster.

    ‘To Be A Pilgrim’…..
    The only nice memory I have from attending ‘North Cestrian Grammer School’, Altrincham 1972-1977…. Under the cruelly, sadistic rule of headmaster Peter Moreton and his despicable ‘Henchmen’ teachers. I watched the latest promotional video for this school how it exists today. Needless to say, I attended at the wrong period of time. It’s now like a luxury holiday camp. A far cry from the way it used to be…. 1:15

    This is a glorious hymn and I am a DEVOUT ATHEIST, we sang this at school in England a wonderful school founded in 1470 and granted Royal Charter by King Edward VI in 1552.
    The music was composed by Rafe Vaughan Williams, another ATHEIST.
    RVW was offered a commission to modernize the music of the English Hymnal, he turned it down.
    However when the commission was offered to another composer who RVW considered to be incompetent,he offered to do the work for no cost. When asked why he changed his mind he said “If a man finds himself compelled to go to church then at least he should have some good music to listen to”.
    Thus he re-wrote many hymn tunes and left us an incomprehensibly beautiful heritage.
    Thank you Rafe we can never re-pay you and so we will just listen to your glorious music.

      Been watching this hymn recording for some tim now and I've only just noticed that Princess Beatrice broke down literally. But you really couldn't blame the Queen. It was who she was; always true to duty even though her health was declining. And you can understand the Princess's reaction when you consider the words of the hymn as well.

      He put the hymn out there thanks be to the Holy Spirit, and what happens after that only the Spirit knows, as He blows where He will. It is beyond a mere man to say what will happen to a legacy, but let (the immortal soul of) Bunyan at least be content that his words live on. Anyway, the battle of the past was with absolute monarchy, which we got past. Those old wounds are healed ... a further property of the Holy Spirit...

      Maddy Prior was an original member of Steelye Span.
      The hymn in question is a track on the album "Sing Lustily and with Good Courage" it is sung by Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band. Gallery hymns of the 18th and early 19th centuries. They really bang it out in the original spirit of John Bunyan, with violin, curtal, bass, mandolin and tabor.
