    From these lines, thanks to Ikzay Iker for his contribution with simulator visualization.
    *I hope you like the radar scope or find it useful to understand the situation better. I'm always working to improve the quality of the content and every advice you give is heard. Please follow me on Twitter @VASAviation to join a new quiz I'm about to publish :)*

    One of those rare times where the pilot's not wetting themselves when they controller says "I have a number I want you to call..."

    The guy working the radio sounds practically excited. The most enthusiastic emergency I've heard!

    Departure: Would you like to go to Midway?
    UA1738: No we’re coming back to Chicago, just give us a minute.
    Me, a born and raised Chicagoan who works at ORD: YESSSS 🎉👏🏼🙌

    Years ago I was playing with a VHF radio and picked up "Midair midair midar. (plane call sign, I forget what it was now) We have had a midair collision with unknown object. We have lost number 4 engine" That is all I got before I lost the signal. I learned on the news that night that is was "a very big bird" that totaled the engine. The plane landed safely. The picture of the engine on the news was bad. Up until then I had no idea just how much damage a bird strike could cause.

    That reminds me; I wonder if there was interesting chatter coming out of YUL morning of September 20. As passenger on 7f 866 I saw a flock of geese pass a hundred feet below and right of us, right after takeoff. About 10 or 10:30am.

    Excellent work by all involved! I'm curious, is it typical to taxi back to a gate in a nominal situation like this, since there was no fire and the engine was off? I expected them to stop on the runway and be met by emergency vehicles, but I might just be watching too much Mayday.

    • @johnferguson7235
      @johnferguson7235 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Evacuating passengers on the runway is dangerous, at least a few will be injured. In addition, it would shut down one side of the airport for at least an hour. If there is no fire and no fluids dripping, the plane can taxi on one engine back to the gate.

      Short answer: It depends

    • @Phili2012
      @Phili2012 ปีที่แล้ว

      Compression stall and roast goose rather than fire. So one good engine. The other shut down resembles a rotisserie. Engines are always hot after use, gate gets passengers and luggage off.
      Obviously if anything malfunctions on the ground, they can change plans. But the pilots can see how hot the engine is.
      Hot brakes are more dangerous on the ground.
      Takes only one engine to taxi.
      With no fuel in the engine it won’t light, it won’t fly, but it’s happy to sit.
      Passengers are safest at the gate (plane will smell of goose).
      ‘Flames’ is the goose being cooked not the plane.

    I really enjoy watching your videos, I wondered if anyone knows how common emergencies are in FAA airspace. Defining an emergency as anything that causes a pilot to declare an emergency, pan, or mayday,

    This was good,I just loved how you did that Takeoff and landing,it made me think I was actually in the plane especially the takeoff,there will a lot of bird strikes now as this is there time to migrate,when a bird is sucked in to an engine does that mean the engine no longer works,what happens to it when the plane lands?sorry about my questions. I enjoyed this video and Thankyou VASAviation.

    • @VASAviation
      @VASAviation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Agnes,
      Your comments and questions are always more than welcome here.
      It depends on the type of bird. In case of geese (not a small bird precisely), the engine could stop working at the time the bird(s) is ingested even causing flames. Little birds will just desintegrate at the time they hit the blades and maybe nothing further happens and the engine does not malfunction - not on a visible way at least. Modern jet aircraft have several instruments to monitor all the parameters of the engines and see the smallest bit of possible malfunction anyways.
      When the aircraft lands, technicians and maintenance crew get in command of the aircraft to tow it somewhere and repair or replace the entire engine or affected pieces of it.

    I don't think pilots should declare emergencies on the "declaring an emergency" way. They should try to use the standard phraseology (Mayday / Pan pan pan).

    • @neuropilot7310
      @neuropilot7310 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      They don't typically use "Pan Pan" in the US. It was pretty obvious that the controller understood 'declaring an emergency' and handled it appropriately.
      Famously, US Airways 1549 transmission was cut off, so the controller didn't hear the words "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" but obviously figured out that "Lost power, both engines" was an emergency anyway.
      IMHO The pilot did the right thing by using the word "Emergency" during frequency changes, so all the controllers knew he was an emergency.

    • @VASAviation
      @VASAviation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Excessively rare if you hear a MAYDAY someday from an American pilot on frequency. FAA considers the word "emergency" as a phraseology.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also mayday and pan is not the same, and the emergency is more like mayday

    • @N1120A
      @N1120A 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pan or Mayday is an emergency in the US and gets the same treatment. If you have a problem, the airport and airspace is yours.

    • @VASAviation
      @VASAviation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Turning back immediately is exactly what a stupid pilot would do. Glad they are not stupid.

    • @pilotandy_com
      @pilotandy_com 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      In my flight training, I learned that the first thing you do in an emergency is to pull out a cigarette and smoke it for a while. Not that you actually do that, but the hyperbole emphasizes the importance of slowing down and making exact calculated decisions that ensure a successful outcome, not knee jerk reactions that cost lives.

    • @davidsholem
      @davidsholem 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Andrew Craner - The only "knee-jerk" circumstances are your comments! For obviously your flight training is sub-par!

    • @TheAidanodian
      @TheAidanodian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Shamayah David you are clearly stupid. Two pilots, now a third in training, have corrected you. You should take their word. Have fun turning back immediately and dying though

    • @davidsholem
      @davidsholem 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saber - two pilots? Wow! In training? I'm very impressed! And your status is? The third?
