      I was impressed by her magnificent situational awareness, demonstrated by her recognition that the tight turn with one engine might be challenging, and offering an alternative runway before the flight deck had thought of it; and her thorough briefing of any potentially conflicting traffic. Edit: and also demonstrated by her recognition that the flight deck might be a little bit too busy to faff around with a frequency change.

    Great job by ATC recognizing they weren't going to make the turn for 4L and pointing it out quickly so they could make alternate plans.

      That is honestly a pretty large SA loss by the crew IMO. As they are turning ~130 heading they call that they're staring a downwind for 4L (4:00), while it's really a downwind for 31L/R. That right turn is continued to ~040 heading, which sets them up on the controller noted 3.0 mi xtrk deviation from a 4L final (5:00). They "fix" it with the right turn back to ~130 and south maneuvering to align for the visual to 31L. I think this drives the point home that emergency returns at airfields with with multiple departing/arriving runways needs to be thought out and briefed.

      My impression was that the severity of the situation must have confused the pilots.

    People that 'fear' flying should listen to the audio from incidents like this to reassure them that we are safely in the hands of the absolute best, most qualified personnel available handling ATC and Flight Crews. Honestly makes me proud to listen to the professionalism of these folks. . .

    • @LouisPrudhomme
      @LouisPrudhomme 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely.
      The only minor thing I think, as a young pilot (CPL/IRME, not experienced airline pilot - yet), would make it even more perfect would be to go a little easier on the crew with traffic information.
      I understand that she was providing it all « by the book » & to probably comply with her own rules as an ATC. I also understand it’s a busy airspace. But my feeling/view (it is entirely debatable) is that it was a little too much. The crew must have been pretty busy, so the long, detailed messages must have been challenging to listen & respond to. Plus, when it involves traffic, even though ‘communicate’ comes last, it’s not like they can disregard it completely either. All this while performing real life after takeoff emergency procedures, red items, engine securing procedures for the emergency return, etc.
      And don’t forget, they declared an emergency, they are the full priority. My view on this is that other aircrafts now need to look out for them (with ATC getting them out of the way in controlled airspaces, which ATC perfectly did here), more than the other way around 🙂

      zach burke - The smaller twin engine airplanes are harder to fly on one engine than the bigger jets. Specialy those 6-10 passengers piston engine "old fashion twins'. Im a CFI. Jets have a lot of residual power to safely climb well, many automatic safety systems, you have a helper on your side reminding you what to do always, and he takes care of the radio and navigation help too while you fly the airplane ONLY and nothing else.
      I have 4 engine fails on take off on piston twins. All landed without a copilot on my side. Very hard to do it.

    • @burntoutaussie4005
      @burntoutaussie4005 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They close a runway until everything is clear of it, and that there are no bits and pieces of airplane junk on the runway to affect other flights. . that's what killed all the Crew and passengers on the French Concorde. .. a tyre picked up some FOD which penetrated a fuel tank and that crash ended the Concord project. . .

    Before I ask this let me make clear that I'm not in any way, shape or form questioning the pilots, nor am I doubting the seriousness of a bird strike. Pilots were textbook - gave themselves altitude, communicated early, did not attempt questionable manouevres nor making the flight longer than necesary just for the sake of implementing plan A.
    But is it just me or did this bird strike seem to cause the aircraft more problems than usual for a situation where one engine is hit?

    I’m not a pilot.. is it no longer an issue making a turn towards a dead engine? I thought it was something you didn’t do.. I was surprised he was given a left turn instruction after informing the tower he lost number 1.. is number 1 still considered the left engine?? Sorry for the uneducated question.. 😁

    • @jamesday426
      @jamesday426 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is more thrust from the working engine and that causes a tendency to turn towards the side of the failed engine. So left engine failure means tendency to turn left. This makes left turns easy and right turns harder. Still possible unless something else is broken, the planes are designed to fly without trouble when the only problem is one engine failed.

    • @burntoutaussie4005
      @burntoutaussie4005 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 'NEVER TURN TOWARDS THE DEAD ENGINE' rule is specifically aimed at pilots of Light Twin Propeller driven aircraft,. . . if you turn towards the 'Dead' Engine,. . then you may lose control of the airplane, as it will not have the power available to maintain balanced flight on one engine. This condition only really applies to Light Twins, and NOT to Airliners like the Airbus and other Marques who have had to PROVE that their machines can safely complete a trans continental flight on only ONE engine. ( BUT. . .they don't wanna do it. . cuz the fuel cost ( Due to the unbalanced assymetric aerodynamic loading. . .. ignore this. . .it's highly technical ) ) would be horrendous. and it's all about the MONEY. . . )
      On Early American 'Twin' engined aircraft; all the generators etc, were attached to the LEFT engine ( ? ) and this was why it was called the 'critical' engine.

    • @burntoutaussie4005

      Borax If the runway is long enough, like 31L at Kilo-Echo, a departure can easily make it with room to spare. Also, with arrivals on 4L, that avoids having to coordinate arrivals and departures on intersecting runways. Everyone gets out and in faster, with minimal loss of safety

    ATC was nice and helpful... except... her job is to move everyone out of emergency aircraft’s way. She shouldn’t be burdening them with traffic positions meaning they have to waste time focussing on that. And then becoming responsible for visual separation. They have declared an emergency so move everyone out if their way. I’d love to hear the CVR and see how much time they likely wasted identifying traffic as described rather than dealing with their issue and checklists.

      I get what you mean but let's not frivolously throw that out. Water landing actually has a extremely high fatality rate. Just because Sully did it doesn't mean the next pilot will execute it perfectly too.

      Bit of a stupid thing to say even though a water landing is a scenario that is trained for over and over it's still a huge risk and the Hudson is a very busy tidal river with some strong currents it's not something an airliner should be landing on and they can sink quick. Then there's the issue of getting 100s of people off the plane and onto dry land the passengers and crew on Sullys aircraft were lucky the pleasure craft were right near by with a crew competent enough to start affecting a rescue almost immediately as the FDNY, NYPD and USCG likely would of arrived to late to rescue everyone the human body wouldn't survive long in the Hudson.

    Too many planes, too muxh air, water + land, sound polution. Need have to travel by ship over seas again, less chance if all the bird deaths, less bugs + desease from travels. Rather see + hear birds than plans + helicoptors

    Not impressed with these pilots navigation or directional skills.
