      I'd say it is a water mark but it isn't although acts like one. It's something about the radar scop that I could delete easily but actually left it on purpose as a watermark.

    I love how the Speedbird pilots were concerned about bits on the runway and advised a sweep for others safety even though they were in mayday. Excellent job.

      Actually one of the most professional cockpit crews I've heard in such a situation. Asked for what they needed and appreciated the support from ATC. Probably the most missed approach awareness I've heard.

      I think that they (also) wanted that information to get more information about the indecent. If they would've found parts on the ground, the plane might have more damage from flying debris than just that malfunctioning engine.

      Exactly what the main reason was and is during such situations. Just remember the Qantas A380 near Singapore. Many engine debris parts went trough or into the wing above and also cut some cables for the outer engine which was still operating, but was not possible to shut down. Found debris can give you an indication if there could be other problems to come up a little later (e.g. fuel spillage, slat/flap problem etc.). Especially flaps/slats problem would require a different approach as they have to change the flap/slat setting for the final approach, especially during a landing near/at MLW. What we don't get just from this video is, if they changed their flap setting during climb out, or just left it as it was during take-off. If they did not change it and debris were found they would probably simply left it in that position and continued to dump way more fuel to get a lower landing speed with the take off flap setting for the landing. (Lower flap setting = higher speed)

      *+ikutoisahobo* though it came rather late in the recording, i think that their concern was also to find out what kind of damage the ship had taken and issues that could crop up. considering their landing gear was still down and many critical electrical or hydraulic lines and systems are susceptible to damage from flying/ burning debris or shrapnel.

      fully agree. for an American, his diction and almost accent neutral voice had pleasantly surprised, especially as it was not too easy to understand the BAW pilot.
      also, this recording has rather good clarity (assuming it was picked from a scanner).
      then again, American or English isn't my native tongue so others might find this routine!

      I think most pilots would react calmly especially in this case a 747 with 3 other functioning engines. They are all trained for this.

      I heard "did declare an emergency" at 4:35; probably just a subtitling error. Do ATC use contractions like "didn't"? I would have expected they would enunciate the "not."

      I heard 'didn't' too; Mayday was declared, but ATC didn't respond to that... I guessing that ATC simply didn't hear it. Regardless, well done peeps!! I love how the Brits are always (seemingly) courteous and pleasant, even in an emergency... 😄

    Great demonstration of Aviate->Navigate->Communicate. They firmly acknowledged the call with a "standby", secured the engine, came up with a plan, then came back to ATC with full intentions. They even suggested a FOD check to the controller -- It was almost a role reversal! I bet they brief before takeoff like they mean it.

      There is something wrong with every pilot out there. They don't seem to know how to panic. Engine on fire? No big deal. Lost all power and are gliding? No worries. I think the most I've heard out of one of them was the guy who asked for a cup of coffee because he'd been flying in sub zero conditions with no heat for 20 minutes.

    British pilot called MAYDAY on his own plane but stays calm and even asks tower to sweep the run way of any debris for the planes taking off after him. That pilot/co pilot had some good experience and training.

    What an example of teamwork here! Thumbs up for the cool and relaxed flightcontroller(s) from PHX. Very calm and clearly spoken .And of course thumbs up for the calm and professional reactions and actions from the BA 747 flight crew..It.s very good to know that we as passengers are in the hands of these professionals!!

      miquel440 Not that this matters much, but the ATC controller was either in LA or ABQ Albuquerque. Phoenix is in a funny situation you communicate with LA’s ATC when at PHX, once inflight slightly to the East you are now on the screens at the ABQ ATC. If you journey a bit to the north your working with SLC’s ATC controllers.

      Commissar0617 That is using the short ton, only used in the US. The BA pilots are most likely using metric tons used in Europe (equal to 1,000 kg), in which case it would be 119,000 lbs. Or they could be using the British imperial long ton, which is equal to 2240 lbs, 240 lbs more than the American ton. Though EU aviation always uses KG and Metric Tons so almost certainly that

      The first priority of any pilot is to help with safe operations. UAL pilots do not care who put trash on the runways, they just don't want to injure customers or ground equipment in the process.

    Best controller I've ever heard. Clear and calm instructions given to all aircraft. Kuddos to the Speedbird Pilots as well. They speak as they would like to be spoken to. Courteous and respectful.

      However, be careful of the way we British deliver an insult using calm and polite language. Listen for what we *don't* say rather than what we *do* say. Most Americans don't ever realise they've been insulted (which makes it even more fun). I recall after an American display pilot landed following an aerobatic routine at an airshow, he was greeted by a Brit pilot who shook his hand and said, "Excellent landing sir." The American walked away thinking he had been complimented. In fact the real message of course was, "What a completely rubbish aerobatic routine."

      Its just a code word to express you are flying to location S on what they call freeway lanes for motorcars. Anyone with an air map for the Phoenix immediate area would know where they are going.

      I would've thought that they would stick to a standardized unit of measurement for declaring things like remaining fuel. I've seen many videos where it's given in pounds, kilograms, tons, etc.

    Unlike many controllers, I really loved how the gentleman with ATC handled this. Very helpful and very professional. He didn't interfere with the pilots during an emergency and gave lots of useful and professional help.

      QuiteInteresting technically they did downgrade it later on so it wasnt much of an issue since both sides could communicate, but yeah I guess it slips one's mind

      Pretty sure having the flight crew declare "Mayday - Mayday - Mayday" are usually interpreted as an emergency. Of course I could be wrong.

      nanomage As I understand, in the US under FAA regulations you have to say ‘ I’m declaring an emergency ‘ in JAA Calling a Mayday is the same thing. I could be wrong but it would seem that controllers in the US want you to say the words declaring emergency. Look up the Aer Lingus EFATO out of Orlando they called a very clear mayday and the controller still had to ask if they were declaring an emergency.

      "Mayday mayday mayday" is still a valid declaration of emergency in the US, although Americans rarely use it, so normally controllers will instead verify that a pilot is indeed declaring an emergency.

    I am pleased to see so many happy with observing the professionalism of British Airways [ speedbird ] pilots. There have been a concerted effort to portray them online as Impatient, Elitist, and Belligerent. This is just not so; cultures may differ, but maybe its time to recognize that there MAY be bad apples in every Airline

      Airline scrutiny of crew behavior is a given and a constant. Make no mistake about it, you can review tons of tapes to find heated exchanges on the frequency, Nothing new about airline competition.

      Problem I had with BA was everything NOT in the flight deck. In particular, their staff dealing with customers at the airport were just abysmal in dealing with me when BA caused an issue that delayed me 24hrs. They simply didn't give a shit.
      Have never flown with them since, and don't plan to.
      These pilots certainly were professional. Trouble is, customers don't deal with pilots (obviously, and nor should they). The rest of their operation was anything but professional.

      I would use the term professional and poised, they aren’t BSers thats for certain, some people may take that as being arrogant. If you happen to watch the Mayday episode where a BA pilot gets sucked out of a popped out windscreen in flight, you can certainly appreciate the poise and clear thinking. The pilot was half out of the aircraft with a member of the cockpit crew holding onto his legs to save his life, exciting stuff

      @@bobbypaluga4346 I am very impressed at the actions of the flight attendant holding on to the captain, but I can assure you that that is possibly not what saved his life while that aircraft was airborne traveling close to MACH 1. The captain's body became folded at the legs and between the laminar flow of air around the body of the aircraft and air entering the cockpit window his body became wedged into position on the airframe. Its similar to a piece of debris [ ribbon ] getting caught on your external antenna while driving your car. This is not to reduce the heroic teamwork of the crew.

    Controller PHX APP has a wonderfully clear voice-- impossible to miss even a syllable. Why can't all communicators be required to practice their speech patterns before employing them in potential life-and-death situations? At most, each transmission might take one second longer, simply to speak more clearly.

    I had the terrorising privilege to witnessing the very same scenario at Heathrow airport while I was working there some years ago. I was with my colleague driving West on Bravo parallel to the Southern runway at around 22:00 as a BA 747 has just rotated when engine 3 surged,Jesus the sound of the booms could be felt ,I remember thinking to myself please keep climbing .... Frightening !!! Thankfully after flying out over the coast they dumped fuel and safely returned to Heathrow about an hour later. I was licensed to drive on the taxiways and runways at LHR and as such we monitor GMC/ATC communications,flightdeck were cool and calm throughout !

    That Chuck Ogier video is great! The guy knew what was happening before the sound even reached them. Instead of freaking about it out he just explained the concept of V1. That little clip made this video so much better.

    Interesting that inside that plane, theres probably a bunch of passengers that think the plane is about to explode and they're all about to die, after seeing the #3 engine burst into flames on takeoff.
    Meanwhile in the cockpit: "you might want to sweep the runway in case there's any bits on there, also let us know when we can start dumping so we aren't over a residential area"

    I'm not sure if it is standard BA policy/procedure but every mayday I hear from them they have a plan in place and tell ATC exactly what they are going to do. Super professional pilots all around at that carrier.

    I love how the BAW pilots always handle emergencies with the maximum level of professionalism. It all starts with a good mayday call. Often you hear ATC ask if the pilot wants to declare an emergency. The pilot in this video uses the correct phraseology and then tells ATC exactly what they are going to do next. Love it!

      That had nothing to do with imperial vs metric. ATC was asking/expecting fuel remaining in time, pilot gave fuel remaining in weight.

    That one PHX ATC proves you get out just as much info, speaking plainly and clearly & not having to repeat. I've monitored ORD and MSN and many small airports on scanner for years. After a year, you understand them all perfectly. I would have loved that job. I was the one paging and info operator for a large teaching hospital (years ago before they all carried mikes) & found emergencies focused me, and instructions just ran thru my head like the CPR steps.

      @Antonio Bromelini Highlights the argument for complete industry unit standardisation. For example, I was flying a 152 last month with both hpa and inches of mercury on the altimeter. I was given the qfe in hpa and set that on the wrong subscale. Could've been a bigger issue than it luckily was.

      Once the faulty engine was shut down, the dangerous part was pretty much over. The pilot eventually asked to downgrade the "mayday"

      ATC was hardly professional. They were casual AF. This video is a great example of the difference in attitudes and standards between the US and EU. The Americans are chatty and the Europeans are all business. Chatty means mistakes and misunderstandings and gets people killed.

    I don't think I've ever seen a more polite conversation inbetween two strangers. Both the Phoneix approach atc and the pilot were so amazingly calm and polite even during an emergency after the flameout.

    When I was learning to fly in the mid 80s we had a visit from the AAIB. The had a recording of a BA VC10 flight from NY in which one by one the engines caught fire and were shut down. They landed safely on the last but what struck me was how calm BA pilots are in an emergency. Nothing flusters them, not even both engines on a 777 failing on finals at LHR!

    With regards to a 747 flying on 3 engines. If you lose an engine your flight manual may require that you land after the event [ which does not make it optional ]. A failed or fragmented engine cannot be guaranteed [ airborne ] not having, projected shrapnel and pieces of metal fragments, affecting other systems including pressurization. Sometimes damage shows up after several hours of continued operation so it should always be treated as a serious event.

      Aircraft engines are designed and built to standards which make uncontained failures exceptionally rare. A contained engine failure does not jeopardise the safe operation of the aircraft. The Boeing/Rolls Royce manual says that it is safe to fly on three engines so long as none of them show any abnormal signs; the BA operational procedures manual states that crew must immediately establish the operational safety of the aircraft; unless the aircraft is unsafe they may continue at their discretion, but not until they have recalculated their route, timings, fuel consumption etc to confirm that they are operationally viable. Obviously in this case the loud bang and the sparks made it prudent to return to Phoenix; in the 268 incident out of LAX the crew shut down the faulty engine and continued across the Atlantic.

      I have seen A Demonstration of a contained engine failure and I have to agree somewhat. I am reminded of engine N1 failures that are impossible to contain as in the DC10; that demolished the engine cowl and much more. there is also engine failures that have occurred because the front engine cowl [ nacelle ] became unsecure and was chewed up by the engine FAN. Many of my manuals required that you land at a suitable airport in the event of an engine failure. In my opinion crossing the Atlantic on three when you had a failure close to your departure airport, is more of a maintenance convenience consideration and is close to the DUMBEST thing I ever heard of in aviation. www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2005-mar-01-me-britair1-story.html

      @@TH-cam.TOM.A DC10 is very old technology, modern engine containment is orders of magnitude better.
      The decision to continue with three engines was not dumb at all. Even though it was influenced by commercial and maintenance factors, the chosen action was both demonstrably safe and operationally viable; it was fully thought through by the crew and approved by their route manager in London. BA has minimal engineering facilities in the US, so it was always going to be the case that the aircraft would be flown back across the Atlantic on 3 engines if that was at all possible - the only question was whether it did so with or without passengers. There being no obvious danger and with a revised route which had at all times a suitable diversion airport nearby, it made sense to get as far as possible over land and make a decision on the transatlantic sector only when near the east coast. I believe the crew chose a southerly rhumb to give them the options of landfall in Greenland and Iceland; in the event they made it to Manchester before they had to land to refuel. The cost savings were enormous - at the very least no need to find seats for 350 pax on other airlines (BA's own planes out of LAX were all full for the following week).

      @ H B First of all you have to realize that flight on three engines is not the recognized standard that the Industry and Safety Experts endorse. I would hate to have to file a insurance [ Haul Loss ] claim based on your contribution if that aircraft had extinguished its fuel before reaching Manchester or other complications were later manifest. If you cannot appreciate that end of things then there is nothing that I can add by way of persuasion. The DC10 is older technology but N1 failures can still occur. Think about it more holistically we are not at a time technologically that we can feel comfortable about containment with every engine failure.

      The area they dumped fuel in is a combination of Class I and Class II desert. What didn't immediately evaporate probably baked out in the following week.

      Kerosene/Jet Fuel is not "oil based" in the same way that you would assume cooking oil or oil based paints. It evaporates in the air like all other volatile liquids. Don't believe me, pour a little bit of gas or diesel on the ground, it will completely evaporate in seconds.

      Not completely. It depends upon altitude and atmospheric conditions. I used to live below an approach to a runway, and there were days I'd come out and find my truck covered in droplets of jet fuel.

      Buckhorn Cortez That was probably why Speedbird wanted to be away from the residential areas. They were concerned not just for the other pilots, but for the people living below. Such professionals all involved were in this situation

      As you said, it depends on altitude and conditions. The higher the plane is, the more time the liquid fuel has to evaporate before it hits the ground. The planes flying over your truck were presumably a lot lower than this aircraft was when it dumped. It's also often quite warm in Arizona, which would speed evaporation.
      I wonder what the composition of the droplets on your truck was. By the time they reached the ground, the most volatile compounds within the fuel would have evaporated, leaving the least volatile ones to reach the ground. I wonder if this suggests that the negative effects of having fuel reach the ground are reduced or not.
      It is also possible that what you saw was actually diesel droplets from nearby heavy trucks, which of course emit their exhaust from a much shorter distance from your truck.

      There are many, many examples of "local flavour" and/or humour in these 5-letter waypoints.
      Near the Needles lighthouse in the UK, you'll find NEDUL and THRED.
      Off Diego Garcia, there are WHATA and BUMMR.
      My all-time favourite has to be the Tweety-Pie approach into Portsmouth, NH, which will take you via ITAWT, ITAWA, PUDYE and TTATT... and on the missed approach, IDEED...
