The Sharpness Test at 3:09 - shot using the same lens on both cameras - Sigma Cine 24mm High-Speed Art Prime Low Light Test at 16:50 - the low light might look better on the R5 but there was much more visible noise before youtube compression. The A7s III also can go way higher in ISO while maintaining a decent image(which I should have shown an example of but I was editing this part at 3:30am and got lazy 😂)

Canon just released the latest firmware (v1.6) for the R5. It now also has the “auto power off temp: high” setting. Based from the reviews, one person was able to record 4k HQ for 2 hours straight!

I’m gonna have to go with the Sony A7S3, although the R5 is an amazing camera, I’ve used both (I work at a camera store and got to play with both before they were released) and for video and low light photography, the A7S3 amazed me in many ways that the R5 just couldn’t quite reach. However, I’m biased and already shoot Sony so take that with a grain of salt

Potato Jet, You could make an update to this video since new R5 firmware brought 240fps and limited overheating issues. I think many people would like to watch it :)
At 6:50 to 7:10 the focus, clarity and color of the R5 clearly outstrips the Sony even when viewed on my phone. Along with the superior IBIS shown at 12:10 those are big advantages for the R5 in typical use. With an Atomos there are no heating issues for 4K hq (along with v1.1 firmware improvements) and the video quality goes up even more. Sony wins on low light, but unless that’s your main requirement the R5 wins for video and that’s not even mentioning 8k, which, while a memory, processing beast, dominates the Sony in all but night shots.
CF Express cards are the issue....ask anyone if the R5 feels hot. Not a single part of the bodies ever hear up. The cards cannot consume the data fast enough. Right now the solution is to run an external recorder.
What i'd like to see in any camera that supports IBIS is a 'star track" mode for night photography, where it moves the sensor around to match the stars during long exposures
@@p4inmaker I think this already happens, because i've seem my Sony A7iii 'wobble' even if on a tripod, it could just be that it was tracking the majority of the motion on the sensor, or it could be something else
@@denvera1g1 As far as I know they only compensate for movement of the body right now. Most cameras (and lenses) with stabilization move around even on a tripod, that's why its often recommended to turn stabilization off.
Canon has almost solved the overheating issues with firmware version 1.6 and moreover also introduced Canon C-Log3, and I think it's in a league of its own for a hybrid camera as of now!

R5 looked better in pretty much every side by side comparison… they’ve released updates that have helped with the overheating issue since this video was released. I’m personally way more impressed with the video quality of the R5, full stop.
A fantastic hybrid of photo and video is the Lumix GH5; yes it’s micro 4/3 and all that stuff, but after using it for six months in photo and video it feels very well rounded and is a good inbetween
Just got my R5 today - no regrets what so ever - go great with my EF and RF lenses - the RF 15-35 2.8 IS USM is a beast! Let’s hope your poor EOS R finds a good home some day 😢😢😢
There's literally EVERY reason to get the sony if you're a Canon R5 preorderer. I currently use the A7 III, and I'm DEFINITELY get the A7s III as soon as I can sell my A7 III!
@@outoforder0 lol the 12mp is not as bad as you think, unless ofc you do prints or scaling. Most social medias (where you post your pictures) are good enough for the pictures. Dare i say it'll even be good enough for most clients in weddings. Plus a lot of software these days with AI tech samples pictures so good you won't be able to tell if it's 12mp. This is a video focused camera after all if you want true professional cameras then mirrorless is probably not the way to go in the first place lol.
@@joshualeejiavui thats hard to say. 8mp is just barely big ehough to print 8x10 at 300dpi. 12 would give you a little wiggle room for cropping but not much. You wont beable to make a wallpaper for 4k display without stretching the image. And its going to be less sharp in general. I seriously doubt any professional photographer is going consider the A7s III, because of all these handicaps. The R5 and the A7s seem to be developed with the exact opposite philosophy. R5 = camera w some video option, while A7s = camcorder that can kind of take pictures in a pinch.
Even though in the past Sony camera's used to overheat, they were still usable after couple of minutes rest. From what I've seen the R5 has a long cooling down period which makes it literally a brick.
I read somewhere that someone did a teardown, and the R5 was built to overheat with both hardware and firmware. Like they had less thermal pads, and even when thermal pads were replaced with thermal paste for full coverage, it still overheats and didn't show any improvements in record time.
Yeah, that's what was fun about those early overheating Sony's: they were scrappy about it. I kinda wished they had continued in the vein. Give me 4K60 on my a9/a9ii. I know it's capable of it, and I really don't care if it overheats after 20 minutes, or if I have to tape an ice pack to the back of it. I'm a big boy, I can make those decisions for myself!
Great video as always, although not sure why sharpness equals image quality.. Soft image isn't bad at all. I would rather have a soft but beautiful image than sharp and digital looking.
You can soften in post or using certain lenses. However, you can not recover detail that wasn't recorded in the first place. If you don't care about sharpness, you should still care about dynamic range..
Interesting to see that at the vlog part especially, the canon skin tones look off, kindo greenish, and the sony skin tones look amazing, nice and peachy.
Gene you should apply for Sony pro support. It's $100 for the year and you can try out all of Sony's glass plus 2 equipment cleanings. If your camera breaks and you have to send it in to fix they will send you out a loaner camera so you won't be without camera. Look it up because it might be a great program for you. I have it and recommend it.

Is the Canon R6's 120fps slowed down in camera, or can you slow it down on computer? Camera reviewers are only comparing 4K modes but there are a lot of users who want to use 1080p. Are Canon and Sony telling the reviewers to not use the 1080p modes? Thank you!🙏
Generally no one uses 1080p recording on professional environments anymore. You can always downscale 4K to 1080p in post if needed for a very clear image quality but never vice versa
Someone with an R5 should team up with linus from linus tech tips and watercool an R5 Edit: so canon "fixed" the overheating with firmware 1.1 so......
Eoshd put an r5 in the fridge at 4 degrees Celsius. The camera never reached more than 34-36 C internally and still overheated after 60 minutes of stills and locks you out of 8k and shuts the camera down. Someone from china also tried a test where he removed the internal CMOS battery after overheating. It reset the overheat timer. 64 degree C was the peak temperature of the PCB and cooled down to 33C in 2 minutes for which the camera locks you out for 2 hours. So I don’t if canon is lying to their customers and crippling the camera artificially. Really sad, was planning to sell my whole nikon kit and shift to r5 and RF glass. Maybe i’ll just end up getting the Z6s for my video needs 😪

I’ve never had any issues shooting my Sony in A7iii (4Kmode) Just received the A7siii and I’m excited about the removal of recording limit!!!! That just recently jacked up a personal family (thank god it was family) documentary interview.
One thing... you can quickly adapt almost any lens to SONY FE cameras, including RF lenses (and medium format, and 6 other major FF brands/types). However, not the other way around.
Its cuz they can simply buy an R especially instead of R6 maybe ..why spend so much money then if you aren't gonna record 4k 120fps etc? they marketed it this way ...
Every new review of anything is positive until the next novelty. We live in a world of new bias. I remember when the Casio 240P was the must have digital camera. If you could afford it at $800!
Filming with 240 fps may sound great, but I would not compromise for the clear loss of resolution. Agree that Sony may be a fraction sharper comparing 120/120 fps. I think the gap can be easily adjusted in post. Canon R 5 and Sony A7S III are both fantastic cameras. I personally give the look and image philosophy of Canon a plus.

I've bought two Canons this year but the Sony seems very tempting. Canon needs an update to get rid of the 30min time limit on video. It's just annoying now.

I think if I needed a camera to use for the next 2 -3 years R5. I believe software changes will open up a lot for the user. For the next year and a half I’ll go with Sony. I don’t like buying cameras so often at that price because I can’t haha.
Yeah, that whole section looks like out of focus crap compared to the Canon for some reason. The focus bit really strange given how fast the Sony is on locking in on eyes.

8K is good but I can't really tell a difference between sony's 4K, like this is not deal breaker, plus the 8K seems to have more noise compared to sony's 4K
For video I'd prefer the A7Siii; however, the R5 hurts because an R5+ with a better heat sink to fix the 4K HQ overheating would be a virtually perfect hybrid camera.
Canon is coming out with a Cinema camera for the R series, that might make you switch back to Canon because of the lenses, the new Canon ibis seems pretty good,
@@BTdifferent The C series! Like the R5 C that came out today. However, I myself bought the new Sony a7 iv and the new MacBook Pro base 16 inch last year. So although I think the RF lens are super awesome, I think canon can’t help but put certain Limitations on its cameras that just doesn’t make it worth it at the moment. It’s always one thing or another that’s a deal breaker. It seems like the appeal with Sony is that it just works, just like apple comouters. Also Sony being a Film and cinema company also, along with gaming and tv producers, it makes sense that it provides good video, not only for big budget, but for the average population like it’s ps5 systems. Sony definitely leading from the front of the pack at the moment. It’s nice to be onboard!

Effective Communications LLC Look at any disassembly tare down video gen 4 body type Sony such as the A7RIV the microphone/headphone ports can be replaced just by taking off the back/screen assembly i.e a couple of screws then it pulls apart and you remove a small ribbon cable PCB with the 3.5mm microphone port on and install the new one you can source from ebay/AliExpress very affordability as all gen4 base parts are interchangeable for mics etc just like how gen 3 bodys were except you only have one layer of dissasomabliy now over the hole body. sony.encompass.com/ is Sonys official parts index just copy paste the model numbers and you find the parts easy if your sending your cam off to Sony to fix this your getting ripped off big time when it takes 10min to fix and for 200USD better off to buy a baggie of replacements and a nice precision screwdriver.
I am happy to hear the choice for the R5, looking at the format it's simple, we are still talking about photocamera's. If you want a pro video camera the c500 mkii is it. For photography the R5 is the king.
I guess it must be full frame vs crop sensor. I love my Fuji but I can see how it might be limiting for someone used to cine camera like a Gene and Armando. But that Fuji color and film simulations is why I won’t ever leave 👌👌
The Canon is far superior and by the way: Sony’s horrible menu structures are sufficient reason for me to never change to Sony. O, and their lenses ofcourse.
I my opinion the dslr/ mirrorless is a photography / TH-cam segment. Honestly the high end video coming from these cameras are lost on TH-cam and you would be better off with the camera you already own. If I was buying a professional video camera for under 4000 dollars I would buy a c200. It has all the useable medium range production features that those cameras have and then some. I look at it this way the r5 is the a7r4 and the a73s wrapped up together with good basic 4K, rf glass and amazing photos in one expensive camera body not two. Also the r6 isn’t bad. Until the a74 comes out I’m not interested.
I was so close to saving for an a7siii but after really considering it for my uses and budget, Im right with ya. Im saving for an a7iii and then I'll upgrade to the a7IV when it drops.
Burrito Bro's Videos the r5 is a better stills camera based on color science alone unless you love editing pictures with models with yellow skin tones. And the only way I’d use the r5 professionally is as a b cam because neither camera is better then a red. The point I was making is the r5 is comparable with both the a7r4 and a7s3 so why would I buy two when I can buy one camera that does everything I need and some video options no one needs?
@@rghrider5170 also the crop hq is sharper on the r5 and won't cause it to overheat. And with a capture card or external recorder you can run full frame for a few hours non stop. R5 will work just fine for long form content and it can be pushed to higher resolution. Seems like a win.
Canon is not likely to fix the overheating issue because it probably isn’t a software problem. The only way Sony fixed it was to bring out new models with better hardware.
EOSHD just said that using Canon's own API the sensor's not getting hot enough to cause damage. It was a bit confusing but should be the most recent story they've pushed out.
Yep , hard to over come physics , masses of megapixels require a lot more energy to process information , just no getting around that . Canon should have fitted a fan/cooling system and a bigger battery , then they could have had their cake and eat it too . alas heat will always be a problem .

The R5 is amazing, but has some serious limitations. That A7S III seems like the perfect camera! The new Sony A1 could've been perfect for me, while being very expensive, but without that flip screen, I'm back to this A7S.
Hey its Drew from "Power of Drew" a camera gear, tips, videographer channel and my A-Cam is a Canon c70 and bought the a7s3 and decked it out, as my B-Cam. However..... I didnt like it!!! With the sensor shortage I ended up selling it for more than I bought it for, and purchased the R5 and its been a better B-Cam. I think Clog3 is better than Slog2. I think the IQ out of the R5 is more cinematic and less "surgical" or rather "digital." Plus, now I can share lenses... now maybe I am different because my A-Cam is a c70.... but yeah. I also think the R5 has more organic footage and the AF is more organic.

A fantastic hybrid of photo and video is the Lumix GH5; yes it’s micro 4/3 and all that stuff, but after using it for six months in photo and video it feels very well rounded and is a good inbetween

There's literally EVERY reason to get the sony if you're a Canon R5 preorderer. I currently use the A7 III, and I'm DEFINITELY get the A7s III as soon as I can sell my A7 III!
I'm assuming you dont shoot stills? That 12mp sensor will not be great for stills. So dont sell your A7 III :)
@@outoforder0 lol the 12mp is not as bad as you think, unless ofc you do prints or scaling. Most social medias (where you post your pictures) are good enough for the pictures. Dare i say it'll even be good enough for most clients in weddings. Plus a lot of software these days with AI tech samples pictures so good you won't be able to tell if it's 12mp. This is a video focused camera after all if you want true professional cameras then mirrorless is probably not the way to go in the first place lol.
@@joshualeejiavui thats hard to say. 8mp is just barely big ehough to print 8x10 at 300dpi. 12 would give you a little wiggle room for cropping but not much. You wont beable to make a wallpaper for 4k display without stretching the image. And its going to be less sharp in general. I seriously doubt any professional photographer is going consider the A7s III, because of all these handicaps. The R5 and the A7s seem to be developed with the exact opposite philosophy. R5 = camera w some video option, while A7s = camcorder that can kind of take pictures in a pinch.
Even though in the past Sony camera's used to overheat, they were still usable after couple of minutes rest.
From what I've seen the R5 has a long cooling down period which makes it literally a brick.
I read somewhere that someone did a teardown, and the R5 was built to overheat with both hardware and firmware. Like they had less thermal pads, and even when thermal pads were replaced with thermal paste for full coverage, it still overheats and didn't show any improvements in record time.
You can record unlimited with a atomos ninja but you have to take out memory cards. Apparently the Cfexpress card is what triggers the overheating.

Yeah, that's what was fun about those early overheating Sony's: they were scrappy about it. I kinda wished they had continued in the vein. Give me 4K60 on my a9/a9ii. I know it's capable of it, and I really don't care if it overheats after 20 minutes, or if I have to tape an ice pack to the back of it. I'm a big boy, I can make those decisions for myself!
I’ve just got the R5 and. Have used it on shoots lasting 4-5 hours shooting a mixture of 4kHQ Video and stills Ive had no problem. Firmware 1.1

Great video as always, although not sure why sharpness equals image quality.. Soft image isn't bad at all. I would rather have a soft but beautiful image than sharp and digital looking.

You can soften in post or using certain lenses. However, you can not recover detail that wasn't recorded in the first place.
If you don't care about sharpness, you should still care about dynamic range..

Yeah, generally much more pleasing. Sony has that weird magenta shift that's a bit annoying.
But nothing a little grading can't fix.
Everything that I have heard is that SONY listened and changed it's color science in this body to the same as with their pro line, (FS9).

JD Dree is actually the sigma adapter. Sony even said the camera autofocus does poorly with other adapters.

Gene you should apply for Sony pro support. It's $100 for the year and you can try out all of Sony's glass plus 2 equipment cleanings. If your camera breaks and you have to send it in to fix they will send you out a loaner camera so you won't be without camera. Look it up because it might be a great program for you. I have it and recommend it.

Please, does anybody know how the 1080p 24fps and 1080p 120fps look on Canon R6 and Sony a7sIII? Which one looks sharper? Is the Canon R6's 120fps slowed down in camera, or can you slow it down on computer? Camera reviewers are only comparing 4K modes but there are a lot of users who want to use 1080p. Are Canon and Sony telling the reviewers to not use the 1080p modes? Thank you!🙏

Generally no one uses 1080p recording on professional environments anymore. You can always downscale 4K to 1080p in post if needed for a very clear image quality but never vice versa

Eoshd put an r5 in the fridge at 4 degrees Celsius. The camera never reached more than 34-36 C internally and still overheated after 60 minutes of stills and locks you out of 8k and shuts the camera down. Someone from china also tried a test where he removed the internal CMOS battery after overheating. It reset the overheat timer. 64 degree C was the peak temperature of the PCB and cooled down to 33C in 2 minutes for which the camera locks you out for 2 hours. So I don’t if canon is lying to their customers and crippling the camera artificially. Really sad, was planning to sell my whole nikon kit and shift to r5 and RF glass. Maybe i’ll just end up getting the Z6s for my video needs 😪

I’ve never had any issues shooting my Sony in A7iii (4Kmode) Just received the A7siii and I’m excited about the removal of recording limit!!!! That just recently jacked up a personal family (thank god it was family) documentary interview.
One thing... you can quickly adapt almost any lens to SONY FE cameras, including RF lenses (and medium format, and 6 other major FF brands/types). However, not the other way around.

Filming with 240 fps may sound great, but I would not compromise for the clear loss of resolution. Agree that Sony may be a fraction sharper comparing 120/120 fps. I think the gap can be easily adjusted in post. Canon R 5 and Sony A7S III are both fantastic cameras. I personally give the look and image philosophy of Canon a plus.

Yeah I'd go R5 mainly for pictures but with the ability to make it a great second angle camera in interviews or performances.
I think if I needed a camera to use for the next 2 -3 years R5. I believe software changes will open up a lot for the user.

8K is good but I can't really tell a difference between sony's 4K, like this is not deal breaker, plus the 8K seems to have more noise compared to sony's 4K
Yes, the more pixels in your sensor, the more noise you get in low light.
For video I'd prefer the A7Siii; however, the R5 hurts because an R5+ with a better heat sink to fix the 4K HQ overheating would be a virtually perfect hybrid camera.

@@BTdifferent The C series! Like the R5 C that came out today. However, I myself bought the new Sony a7 iv and the new MacBook Pro base 16 inch last year. So although I think the RF lens are super awesome, I think canon can’t help but put certain Limitations on its cameras that just doesn’t make it worth it at the moment. It’s always one thing or another that’s a deal breaker. It seems like the appeal with Sony is that it just works, just like apple comouters. Also Sony being a Film and cinema company also, along with gaming and tv producers, it makes sense that it provides good video, not only for big budget, but for the average population like it’s ps5 systems. Sony definitely leading from the front of the pack at the moment. It’s nice to be onboard!

Effective Communications LLC Look at any disassembly tare down video gen 4 body type Sony such as the A7RIV the microphone/headphone ports can be replaced just by taking off the back/screen assembly i.e a couple of screws then it pulls apart and you remove a small ribbon cable PCB with the 3.5mm microphone port on and install the new one you can source from ebay/AliExpress very affordability as all gen4 base parts are interchangeable for mics etc just like how gen 3 bodys were except you only have one layer of dissasomabliy now over the hole body. sony.encompass.com/ is Sonys official parts index just copy paste the model numbers and you find the parts easy if your sending your cam off to Sony to fix this your getting ripped off big time when it takes 10min to fix and for 200USD better off to buy a baggie of replacements and a nice precision screwdriver.

I guess it must be full frame vs crop sensor. I love my Fuji but I can see how it might be limiting for someone used to cine camera like a Gene and Armando. But that Fuji color and film simulations is why I won’t ever leave 👌👌
Also I’d say Fuji doesn’t yet have a strong vlogging lens option. 10-24 is huge and expensive for not that great stability/warping when vlogging.

I'm a photographer who take some behind the scene footage. I got the R5 and I love it ! so its all depend of what you do
I my opinion the dslr/ mirrorless is a photography / TH-cam segment. Honestly the high end video coming from these cameras are lost on TH-cam and you would be better off with the camera you already own. If I was buying a professional video camera for under 4000 dollars I would buy a c200. It has all the useable medium range production features that those cameras have and then some. I look at it this way the r5 is the a7r4 and the a73s wrapped up together with good basic 4K, rf glass and amazing photos in one expensive camera body not two. Also the r6 isn’t bad. Until the a74 comes out I’m not interested.
I was so close to saving for an a7siii but after really considering it for my uses and budget, Im right with ya. Im saving for an a7iii and then I'll upgrade to the a7IV when it drops.
The r5 isn't as good as either of those sony cameras though...
Burrito Bro's Videos the r5 is a better stills camera based on color science alone unless you love editing pictures with models with yellow skin tones. And the only way I’d use the r5 professionally is as a b cam because neither camera is better then a red. The point I was making is the r5 is comparable with both the a7r4 and a7s3 so why would I buy two when I can buy one camera that does everything I need and some video options no one needs?
Also canon glass is the best on the market

And with a capture card or external recorder you can run full frame for a few hours non stop.
R5 will work just fine for long form content and it can be pushed to higher resolution. Seems like a win.
Canon is not likely to fix the overheating issue because it probably isn’t a software problem. The only way Sony fixed it was to bring out new models with better hardware.
EOSHD just said that using Canon's own API the sensor's not getting hot enough to cause damage. It was a bit confusing but should be the most recent story they've pushed out.
Yep , hard to over come physics , masses of megapixels require a lot more energy to process information , just no getting around that .
Canon should have fitted a fan/cooling system and a bigger battery , then they could have had their cake and eat it too . alas heat will always be a problem .

The R5 is amazing, but has some serious limitations. That A7S III seems like the perfect camera! The new Sony A1 could've been perfect for me, while being very expensive, but without that flip screen, I'm back to this A7S.

Hey its Drew from "Power of Drew" a camera gear, tips, videographer channel and my A-Cam is a Canon c70 and bought the a7s3 and decked it out, as my B-Cam. However..... I didnt like it!!! With the sensor shortage I ended up selling it for more than I bought it for, and purchased the R5 and its been a better B-Cam. I think Clog3 is better than Slog2. I think the IQ out of the R5 is more cinematic and less "surgical" or rather "digital." Plus, now I can share lenses... now maybe I am different because my A-Cam is a c70.... but yeah. I also think the R5 has more organic footage and the AF is more organic.
