I‘m now using my 2x R5 with 85L RF and 28-70L RF since release (5 months)....and those combos are INSANE. The R5 is the camera I’ve been waiting for years and i‘m very satisfied.
Seeing Peter do so well in his career really makes me happy. Makes me feel like there's a tribe that I belong to and that tribe is doing amazing things.

I thought I'd give it a day or two after the launch before commenting. I've used Canon since the Eos 1 was out and still use a 5D MkII. Canon have been upfront about the possibility of overheating in 8K. It's easy to critisise, nothing is perfect but Canon have produced a camera as an amazing piece of tech. The professionals that use 8K will know it limitations in this area and work around it. It's still not tested properly yet in the field. Instead of sniping every new product that comes out from any manufacturer, we should appreciate the hours of research the engineers do to allow us the opportunity to use this kind of camera. I have friends that are press photographers who used to use 36 exposure film for soccer games on manual on a Scottish winters night and still get amazing shots. We're lucky to have all the bells and whistles that todays cameras have. Well done Canon, Nikon, Sony etc for pushing the boundaries.

Thanks for a great video. “Holy grail” is the most accurate assessment I’ve heard thus far. Been a Canon shooter my entire life. Started out with the A-1 back in 1982, EOS 630 (1989), 5DM3, and 5Ds. While I was considering the 5DM4 as my next camera, I decided to just go for it with the R5. This thing is simply the perfect camera.

As someone who shot rock concerts in the late 1960's early 1970's, did my own film developing and printing, sold prints in music stores, todays technology continues to blow my mind.

This is the first canon camera in a very long time that I've been excited about. I hope it lives up to all the hype and isn't handicapped like previous versions have been. I'll wait to see. Will be interesting to see what SONY comes out with next. Almost every time canon has something exciting SONY smashes it.

1:30, yep man, feels like yesterday. The 5DII was what gave me the flexibility and capability to engage with starting my wedding business and while recent world events have put things slightly on hold, I do hope that the R5, barring any overheating concerns whether in pre or post production will still enable me to take that huge step forward yet again.
Edit. Your video is fantastic and really still gives me peace of mind that this is going to be a stellar product, potential video issues notwithstanding.

Awesome overview! I am glad to hear how realistic your approach is to overheating issue. I already have seen few disappointed opinions addressing overheating but I think it is important to have realistic expectations matched with understanding of physical engineering and limitations, and you addressed it very well. For someone who needs to film constantly at 120fps in 4K, than there is a reason why cinema cameras are built the way the are. Thanks for you review!!!! Awesome.
After my initial watch I almost pre-ordered. Then I remembered we still don't know if this camera is actually good yet (well, how good rather). A lot of issues are surfacing including banding issues in several videos, not to mention overheating. Hopefully this is what we've been waiting for and any issues can be fixed through firmware updates. Will wait till end of the year to make a decision on this one (already waited this long, what's a few more months?) 🙃
Canon has been forced to release it when there are clearly still technical issues to be solved. $4000 for a faulty camera, you must be joking!
Firmware won’t change the laws of physics and address the heat issue.
I cannot wait to get my hands on this. It will be the game changer piece of gear of my career thus far. Lifelong Canon shooter but they haven’t pulled their weight on video in the last few years with DSLR’s so I have been shooting video on Sony. Finally I can switch back to photo and video canon only 💗

I took a long break from photography but getting back in it this year professionally. My next camera will be the EOS R5 Mark II. Right now I use the 5D Mark III and those cameras are still extremely good.
So many cameras have come out since then. Great image quality can be had from almost any camera these days. The main thing I look for are features that allow me to have full control and to do things as quickly as possible.
Wow! Your excitement reminds me of the day I was the proud owner of the 5Dm2 with two great L glass lenses. I was breathless and this experience seems like it might be that x2 or x3, heck maybe even x4. I’m thrilled. Thank you!!!

Love how excited he is about this camera. Although I'm not impressed. a lot of points he makes are already in other cameras. The 8K RAW is great, but I've already heard a lot of issues on overheating, and bugs. We'll have to see when the camera is actually released. As of right now, I'll stick to my Xt-3. I already get my hybrid cinema camera for 1/4 the price.

Contemplating a switch from my Sony A9; I was on the Canon site ogling the 1DXm3, as I got this R5 video notification. Now in a short 13 minutes and 20 seconds, I’m ready to sell part a kidney and someone else’s first born, for a Klondike bar...and an R5. Not sure I’ve looked forward to a new camera as much as this one. Doesn’t just meet my expectations for what I want in a mirrorless camera, it knocks it so far out of the park the balls in a different zip code.

That would be good to see. However, bracketed shots would be all I need since everything I shoot is post processed.
The only question I have for this is about the over heating....
I fully understand that it overheats on 8K, and 4K-120. What about regular 4K-24/30 or 4k-60?? Is it overheating on those as well?

Sounds like it’s oversampling and converting to 4K so it’s under similar-ish load either way. Just lay it on top of a bag of ice while recording.

According to the canon, it will overheat regardless of what video format you shoots in, it's just how long you have before it overheats and you have to shut it completely off to cool down.
I think you will need a Server to start editing the 8k Footage, because just 13 min of shooting will take 256GB 😨😨
I don't always store my large files on regular widely available kind of storage, such as hard drive. But when I do, I server

The temperature issues can be mitigated somewhat by using the battery grip, as the battery being right next to the memory card (which also gets hot when shooting 8K) is yet another heat source.

Imagine you had taken a second job, part-time at a mere $10/hr working only 15 hr/wk. Suppose 2/3 of the gross pay could be saved. If you did that 39 weeks ago, you'd have the $3900 for an R5 body. Throw in funds from your primary income, work more hours, and/or at a better wage and the time is correspondingly decreased.
Can you do a low light test with other canon cameras? I know other canons don’t handle high ISO values all that well and was curious to see if it’s improved

That's the camera i started with.
Its a great tool in the beginning phase and with magic lantern installed pretty decent. It was a big deal to me to have scopes and all the other features it gave me.

Cool camera and canon definitely listened!! Definitely more keen for the R6 though as a main stills camera to replace my R and backup camera for my bmpcc6K.

I was just thinking of the possibility of the R6 for stills and 2 Pocket 6Ks for video (for $200 more than an R5, you get TWO 6K RAW cams).

My experience-Canon t5i a long time ago. I was always amazed by the color of the photo it produced ..... was happy in every shot .... :)
Hi Peter I'd like to hear more about editing with the different codecs on the R5. I see that it can record in H264 and H265 in 4:2:0 and 4:2:2. How good is the quality of those codecs? In your samples are you recording in RAW or in one of those codecs? I'm drawn to getting an R5, but I'm a little worried about compression artifacting.

I have a small question about it thats if we are shooting with only 1080 hd then will we have a 120fps or only 60 fps as like eos R does because being a wedding filmmaker we dont need every footage having 4k and thats a huge data storage issue we get from it and other question is if we are shooting 4k 120fps, then does we have the eye or face detection in it or not because being a not a big filmmaker we have to use that autofocus funtion. And my last question is about sound , can we capture sound with 120fps or not? Because sony cameras do have sound function in their 120 fps . Waiting for your reply and much love from india👍👍

I had the honor to test this beast of a camera a few months ago and I absolutely loved it. In combination with a 70-200 f2.8, 15-35 f2.8 and a 24-70 f2.8 the Photos are razor sharp and also the 4k 120 fps and the 8K Video mode are my favourite features on this beast
What lens do you have on it for vlogging and what lens were you using in those R5 footage you showed us? 😍

Seems like a wait and see on video overheating, then shutdown, then wait time to use again. Otherwise that's a deal breaker for many.
