Been using the R5C for 3 full months now and it has been amazing. Obviously the battery is the only big issue but I have four and its been fine, and powering with USB C is super easy. For a portable cinema setup, a dtap battery or dummy is a great way to go. For photos, its just as goood as the R5 without the ibis, but its truly a video beast. No regrets at all!
Clog2 from Cinema RAW Lite on the R5C pretty much needs noise reduction applied but even so the noise will be more controlled in a oversampled 4K mode with custom noise reduction settings. Canon should just throw us a firmware update with clog2 XF-AVC mode.
Really surprised that this was one of the only videos that mentions the autofocus performance. You really knocked it out of the park with this one. I'm having autofocus issues and I'm wondering how no other video has even mentioned it.
What are your autofocus settings? My autofocus seems to work pretty well. You were cycling through the options but didn't show a demo. My "Continuous AF" is set to Enable, my AF Frame is "Whole Area" and I also have the Face Det. & Tracking on. I haven't tested out zooming in on 8K footage, but another TH-camr who does tech stuff responded with his own demo that showed excellent quality at 10x zoom. I know you're probably slammed with work but if you're able to, would really appreciate you doing more demo's with the autofocus because I'm sure it's better than that. Anyway, as always, really appreciate your work.
I'm also thinking of upgrading my R6 to an R5/R5C for pro video. Do you miss the IBIS? That's the one thing making me lean towards the R5, especially with the 1.6 update fixing the overheat.
@@fotomaton7852 I would prefer going for R5C, I don't really care about IBIS as it is the reliability of the camera. I just shot my 4 wedding with the R5C and it's a BEAST! Love to see a review of the Canon R3 for video next. I know it’s not a cinema camera, or video first, but I think it has some pretty interesting video quality features/advantages that are above the R5/R5c. Of course more expensive, but still pretty interesting for video shooters.
I currently own a Canon EOS R3, I use it mainly for videography purposes at weddings. Let's just say it's an insanely good camera but I wouldn't personally say it's insanely better than the R5/R5C to warrant such a price hike. I've used the R5C, R5, R6 and own an A7S III for my gimbal. The R5C/R5 are pretty close in terms of video to the R3, granted the R3 has greater battery endurance and could last me hours just shooting video, the R5C/R5 would require me to have multiple LP-E6N on hand to get through a full day of shooting. I use 4K 120fps in camera on my R3 handheld and damn does it kick some ass, I've used 4K 120fps on my A7S III using handheld, and although it's good I feel that the in camera stabilization is just far better and more polished with the R3. I would also personally choose the R5 over the R5C for the stabilisation (IBIS vs Electronic IS) reasons as I shoot handheld, as well as the recent update the R5 received which effectively made it useable over long periods of time.
Which one SHOULD you buy? It depends if you do more drone and tripod shoots OR are more oriented towards hand-held Vlogging or night-time shoots! Sony A73 wins the hand-held vlogging side of things AND the night-time low-light shoots BUT Canon R5c wins the well-rigged, heavy lens oriented shoots where you are on a tripod or using a big drone. I would also favour the Canon R5c with its beefier batteries and more weather resistant (i.e. more rain proof) ruggedized form factor on the more commercial-oriented shoots. For BOTH cameras though, SPEND MONEY ON SHARP AND FAST LENSES !!! You want T2.4 and faster at 18-to-24mm, 35mm and 50 mm focal lengths which most commercial-oriented shoots tend to use! To illustrate, would I rather spend my lens money on a Laowa 12 to 24mm Zoom or a 35 mm T1.5 CN-E prime lens if I had EITHER the Sony A73 or the Canon R5c? --- YES the 12-to-24mm Zoom is handy BUT I would rather spend $4000 on the single focal length T1.5 CN-E 35mm prime lens! Always spend more money on your lenses than your camera! Get FAST and SHARP LENSES !!! V
Press and hold MENU + Custom Button to quickly set it, that's great, I loved that Panasonic let you do that with just press and hold on the button so I'm glad a shortcut exists for Canon. Wonder if it works for all camera's or just a select few **runs home to try it on the C70!**
I have both the R5 & R5C .. the R5 with the new 1.6 Firmware is really making it hard to decide which one I like better. @PotatoJet I’d luv to see a video of you revisiting the Canon R5 ( 1.6 Firmware ) & comparing it to the R5C !
You are also loking at it on a 2K display with the horrid youtube codec laid on top. Try looking at it on a true 4K or 8K display and it looks like shit
Crazy because the R5 no longer overheats with firmware 1.6.0, wonder if he or any of the bigger photo/video guys will say anything about it🤔 Also wonder how current R5C owners feel about the 1.6.0. R5 update
i'm an R5C owner and i thinks its great the R5 has no more overheating issues. The fan on the R5C is great, but it's not even the main feature. Whats sets it apart from the R5 is canon's cinema OS. This brings so much more features that benefits the video side, and makes it feel like a true cinema camera that also takes really good photos.
Great Video as always Gene, but, Im sticking with my A7S-III, and My back up A7-III, I Use both for my interviews, and documentaries. The A7S-III captures so much details, and can shoot in regular room light and look beautiful with its larger sized pixels.
Wait… at 11:31 you open the memory card door and it doesn’t turn off. Can you hot swap cards while recording in relay mode?? I would try this myself but I loaned mine out.
R5 nolonger overheats since firmware 1.6 The auto focus on the r5c in video while not as good as the r5 isn't nearly as bad as you made it sound. Lastly you sure it's not sony who is sponsoring this video?
I wanted to comment about this as well. I wondered what his settings were because he was cycling through them but didn't show a demo. What are your settings? My "Continuous AF" is set to Enable, my AF Frame is "Whole Area" (what he showed in the video looked like the AF Frame was set to either Large or Small) and I also have the Face Det. & Tracking on. I haven't tested out zooming in on 8K footage, but another TH-camr who does tech stuff responded with his own demo that showed excellent quality at 10x zoom. Hoping Potato Jet sees this comment and maybe does a test when he has time.
@@CinePals exactly and if you look at the footage his friend was shooting of the fireworks look how good it looked. That was because his friend was using his canon rf lens on the body and gene was using 3rd party older lens and he never showed us all the so called focus issues he was having but he mentioned it as being a major issue. He also never mentioned what lens he was using on his Sony, but you know he was using a G master native lens on that camera. In my opinion he set the canon up for failure I have never seen the 8k footage look so bad as it did when gene did that test. I have never seen gene run such a sloppy review and not show any evidence of the problems he supposedly had. The comment he made about the r5 melting which as we all know is nolonger an issue with firmware 1.6 plus the comment he made to his canon shooting friend about sonys auto focus blowing canons out of the water for video is just stupid. He makes it sound like all canon cameras have shitty auto focus when again anyone who has used an r5 or r6 know that the af is every bit as good as sonys some say even better.
To answer your question about the Canon R7.... I own 3 of them.... Amazing camera... autofocus is super fast... battery life, no record limits... RF mount... I mean for the price, it's amazing!
I'm trying to decide between the R5c and the c70. I was leaning towards the c70 but after watching your video I might be leaning back, maybe. I don't know... Decisions!
At 5X englargement (0:36 in the video), the a7s III has more detail than Canon 8K RAW. And in the backlighted shots at 2:10, there is more detail in the wheels of the car with the a7s III.
i still don't understand why there is more detail with sony at 0:36 Maybe Im not an adept in this realm, but i see a more sharp and detailed image with canon
the R5C is sharper. Look at the words. Aside from that sony might be sharp already, also using sharpening on top, but i hear that SOny uses noise reduction that cant be turned off at higher ISo which decreases noise but lose detail.
@@RayValdezPhotography we did look at the words. The Sony has more detail in the example provided. I hear the r5c only has 10 stops of DR, worse than any other camera besides the r5, which could explain the wheels.
@@JonPais The focus point must be off in his example as I can assure you R5/R5C 8K is much more detailed when punching in than any 4K footage including A7S3. As for DR, yes in 8K you get about 10 stops, it jumps up to 12 in 4K though. CineD just did a full lab test..
@@fotomaton7852 both clips were focused identically in the example. 8K RAW has 10 stops of DR, the other codecs have noise reduction so I don’t pay attention to them. RED and ARRI do not use NR on the RAW or ProRes internal, which is why results for both are nearly identical . Any camera that shows a two stop increase in DR when using ten bit rather than raw is using heavy noise reduction. Also, oversampling generally only improves DR by around 1/2 stop. The a7s iii measures 11-1/2 stops in raw, but 12-1/2 to 13 in 10 bit xavc bcz NR.

Your videos have so much good information hence have to stick around till the end.

Great video I am interested in that camera rig set up you have with canon at 13:31 seconds of this video?? thanks in advance
Arri stole the lobby from IMAX lol PV Crew represent!
Press and hold MENU + Custom Button to quickly set it, that's great, I loved that Panasonic let you do that with just press and hold on the button so I'm glad a shortcut exists for Canon. Wonder if it works for all camera's or just a select few **runs home to try it on the C70!**
Could you please translate that farhheyeanhnehaen measure of temperature to the worldwide known CELSIUS? THANKS.
i cant believe i just watched 29 min video holy crap i love this guys
Been using Angelbird ever since I switched to my Red Komodo and I haven't had any problems, really solid!
Yeah I’ve got a 1TB cFast for my BlackMagic 6K Pro and it's been great. I've never filled it on a shoot.
Incredibly put together as always man. Appreciate you
"Lean Gene" -- definitely can tell you've been focused on fitness (hopefully it's contagious and I'll catch it). 💪🏽
Potato using the Venice! PLS WE NEED A VIDEO WITH THAT BABY
I mean with the recent firmware update on the R5 I don't really have to worry about overheating anymore.
It's hard to believe this man was really using EOS R as his main video camera, but IG that makes him a real pro
content creators: making video in 8k
TH-cam compression: ....hold my bear
I'll just smile and dream. I might need this one day.
Dude the R7C is coming in 2023! But I'm thinking of upgrading from the 90D to the R7, the ef to rf adapter with VND would be an awsome set up.
the goodwill sign looks really good in 8k
Gene! Armando told me to get the FX3 instead. Do you agree with him?
Bought two of those Angelbird cards during its presale. Thought it was a typo in the price. Glad to see you using it too!
I have both the R5 & R5C .. the R5 with the new 1.6 Firmware is really making it hard to decide which one I like better. @PotatoJet I’d luv to see a video of you revisiting the Canon R5 ( 1.6 Firmware ) & comparing it to the R5C !
@@johnsysays it actually doesn’t over heat anymore. There’s just the 30min record limit
@@johnsysays a little bit more dynamic range, and more cinema options. and 8k 60
love your work bro!! no wonder your photos are always so crisp. what lenses are you using?
@@WhereToFind hey brother thank you! Currently I’m using RF28-70 & a RF 70-200
@@SteveBitanga photos are dope as always . You staying out in OC? Start doing TH-cam videos bro!
10:12 Did you say 820 Frames Per Second at 4K, 10-bit?? that's amazing
No I think he meant “and get a 120 frames per second“
Its crazy how the Alexa Classic is still such a beautiful image given that its shoots only 2K.
yep, the Alexa's image is stunning.
Color depth and reproduction are 10x more important than resolution.
You are also loking at it on a 2K display with the horrid youtube codec laid on top. Try looking at it on a true 4K or 8K display and it looks like shit
@@silbay wrong, buddy. Nearly all films worldwide are projected in 2K.
@@silbay Yeah I'm gonna say the many movies and TV shows shot on it actually looked, and continue to look, just fine.
@@johnsysays lots of test are out already!
@@johnsysays IBIS on the R5 still wobbles even when deactivated. He talks about it in the video.
Bro how are you using the dji mic so far from you and in such winds and not get any noise at all?!
Charles! @13:20 such a great dude!
Great Video as always Gene, but, Im sticking with my A7S-III, and My back up A7-III, I Use both for my interviews, and documentaries. The A7S-III captures so much details, and can shoot in regular room light and look beautiful with its larger sized pixels.
Oooh I want that touchscreen video scrubbing on my a7siii
Awesome video! You answered all of the questions I had!
Compared with the Sony a1 in 8K? Your thoughts
I think this is the best video that you have done. (that I've seen) I love the side by side with the Sony a7s III.
YOU THE MAN G! Thanks for the good content!
Wait… at 11:31 you open the memory card door and it doesn’t turn off. Can you hot swap cards while recording in relay mode?? I would try this myself but I loaned mine out.
What drone was they flying on ?
Great to see your Potato face again!
Man! 8:30 was shot on the new VENICE! Sick!!
Since the FX3 got Netflix Approved, hoping for the same with the R5 C!
Do you plan to shoot for netflix?😂
how do they even know what people use. All these camers look damn near the same epecially in good lighting.

finally a better looking footage than a gopro on your drone ;d
R5 nolonger overheats since firmware 1.6
The auto focus on the r5c in video while not as good as the r5 isn't nearly as bad as you made it sound.
Never heard of angelbird memory card before. I trust you on this one and I'll give them a shot 😅
Would be curious on your thoughts on how the R5C compares to the C70?
Which drone was used to fly R5C please? Thanks Footage is amazing!!
I'm trying to decide between the R5c and the c70. I was leaning towards the c70 but after watching your video I might be leaning back, maybe. I don't know... Decisions!

I love your videos how did you start as a filmaker???🧐🧐
So bad to hear you was in Germany and I missed you! 😔 I am looking forward to see your impressions in Germany!
@17:24 what's the lens used ? is it still the same camera ?
I need Canon R5c now haaaa
That ARRI location you showed looks like the WeWork Headquarters at least from the TV Show side of WeWork
At 5X englargement (0:36 in the video), the a7s III has more detail than Canon 8K RAW. And in the backlighted shots at 2:10, there is more detail in the wheels of the car with the a7s III.
i still don't understand why there is more detail with sony at 0:36
Maybe Im not an adept in this realm, but i see a more sharp and detailed image with canon
the R5C is sharper.
