    I prefer the A7SIII over the FX-3. THEY ARE the same camera. Only 2 real differences between the 2; One has an EVF, the other doesn’t and one has a handle and the other one doesn’t. Personally, I wouldn’t trade the EVF of the A7SIII for the handle of the FX-3. Moreover, the FX-3 is MORE expensive than the A7SIII for no justifiable reason I can think of. Actually I believe it would make more sense if the FX-3 was a few hundred dollars cheaper than the A7SIII and not the opposite. The A7SIII is a better deal than the FX-3. Besides the handle, the FX-3 offers no advantage over the A7SIII, yet it cost more and has less. Just my take.

  • @Michael-TECHtonics

    I haven’t tested any cameras yet, but I think this FX3 has been greatly overlooked in the world of TH-cam. This is the first camera that I actually feel like it is the best without having to be pushed into it. One thing I either missed or you didn’t bring up ( might have been in your neutral part) is the S-Cine mode on the FX3. What are your thoughts on that?

  • @JCHart-nj7fx
    @JCHart-nj7fx ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Flexible audio inputs and multi channel adjustments on locstion for origination options are as vital to me as the imaging capture options; so, the FX3 will be my next purchase. Undoubtedly a cage addition will come along to gain a larger outboard viewfinder, on cage light, etc.
    And, an adjustable angles EV interface capture confirmation option would improve its set up flexibility. As it is, with my shooting and shot positioning, this is the camera I need for commercial industrial park locations clients.

    Just a great video review. I’ve been running an A7Sii since 2015. I added a Leica SL2s last year to replace an A6300 I use as a B camera on a tripod or gimble stabilizer.
    After your review I will likely sell the Leica, mostly because I have so much Sony glass. Then buy the FX3. I can do a lot with the FX3 without paying for a cage. I have a (costly) studio cage setup in which my A7Sii lives and I’ll keep that camera setup.
    Thanks for the well done video. It literally answered every question I had.

    I preordered the a7s3 the day it opened. Being a small-scale production company, I just didn't have the budget to buy the FX3 when it came out months later. That release WAS annoying haha but I'm happy with the s3 and it suits my needs even though I would love to have a "cinema line" camera in my toolkit instead. My dilemma now is do I upgrade to the fx3 or save up for the fx6 so that there's a noticeable boost in capabilities. Appreciate the video! I think built-in ND's on the fx3 would gobble up the fx6 demand which Sony may not want!

    Very useful review. I just want to add that tally lights' traditional function is to indicate in a multi-camera shooting scenario which camera is "hot" (being recorded and/or broadcast live) at the moment. This is especially important for each camera operator to know (so they don't do anything that wouldn't look good on air like, say, zoom in to check focus), and, secondarily, for the talent to know which camera to look at if they're speaking to camera.
    Oh, and... I've heard that the reason the FX3 doesn't have internal NDs is because it does have IBIS. Apparently, with current technology, you can have one or the other, but not both.

  • @PaulFeinberg

    Cool comparison....I like the size of that thing and the dials missing do not bother me either. I Do like the EVF for photography and I shoot mostly video and some photography so I wanted that EVF. If the price was the same I would maybe consider it, but with my EDU discount and the price difference I couldn't justify getting the FX3. I wanted to EVF anyway so that made my choice, but dang I love the size of the FX3.

    I just spent a week with the a7siii, I filmed an interview and I filmed a few reviews of different motorcycles with it. I loved it, but the FX3 seems like it would be better suited to what I do, motorsports (reviews, events, etc), I am not overly concerned with stills but would like to take decent ones. I am a little bummed about that handle as I like using my rode wireless systems and that takes up the hot shoe. So the next major thing I shoot I will probably do the same rental but with the FX3 to really see which one I like before I buy. Great info man!

    Love your videos man! I'm currently looking to upgrade my B cam from A7III. Debating matching my A Cam (A7sIII + K3M) to avoid button confusion/maintain sanity/save on cost --- or getting the FX3 pretty much just for the fan and talley lights (handle isn't a huge factor for me already owning the K3m and would probably add a cage either way). Can I grab your thoughts? On a 2 cam setup, do they feel similar enough to where it would feel awkward going back and forth or would it be better just to keep everything the same and save quite a bit on cost?

    I really think FX3 missed out on so many important cinema features - true 24p, shutter angle, waveform, anamorphic mode, DCI 4K, time code - not to mention internal ND, hybrid articulating screen, removable EVF, dual bottom 1/4 screw, better LCD - that it only makes us wonder why Sony not only placed it in the FX line but also priced/spec'ed/released it so similarly/closely with A7S3. And the major addition being the XLR handle is actually not as versatile or functional as your own handle plus a separate XLR-K3M unit.

    I have the A7siii and the FX3.
    I bought the A7siii in Dec 2021 on Craigslist, at a little bit of a markup from the new price actually, because it was so back-ordered from the chip shortage! I sold my A7sii because I had major overheating issues, not very professional to stick your camera in the fridge in the middle of a shoot. Since I was used to the A7sii body this was an easy transition. I have the Sony ECM-B1M shotgun mic that goes on the hot shoe and it provides really clear sound, great backup for the XLR inputs on the Fx3 if I have a lav mic and an XLR input shotgun on that cam.
    Then just a few months ago I sold my FS7mii and got the Fx3. Now both my cameras match better in post, the A7siii and the Fs7mii were not matching well. I dig the top handle with the XLR inputs, and that you can mount it vertically on a tripod quite easily. Also, as a 5 foot 5 135 pound gal, the Fs7mii was WAY heavier and any weight I can cut off my kit is really important to me.
    They both have awesome autofocus via the touch screen which is amazing, and really quite idiot-proof, no excuses for out of focus shots! Being able to really pump up the ISO without getting much grain is awesome.
    They work together really well and I would highly recommend either of them, or both!

    Great detailed video! I’d like to see a video comparing/contrasting codecs. Do they produce the exact same image side by side or are there slight differences. I’m in the market for 2 cameras. I’m for sure getting an fx3 but I’m wonder if the second camera should be an a7siii. A7siii may be a bit better for photo with the evf. But for video having exact same camera would be better for editing if images are different. Thanks Dunna!

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a great idea! I think, I’m image quality it would be hard to show the difference between codecs. I find the difference is mostly in how they edit. If I know I’m doing a LOT of shooting and I might run out of space on my cards, I’ll use XAVCS 10 bit and it still looks great but bogs the computer down juuuuuussst a bit.
      In shooting this video, I expected the fx3 and a7siii to have the EXACT same picture but I noticed a slight color shift between the two. It wasn’t a very controlled text though so it could have just been user error. But I’ll have to do some closer testing. It was SUPER easy to match though.

Now I'd rather take the a7sIII with the optional audio module that you can attach and detach any time you want. This is important especially for gimbal work. I dont see the FX3 on a gimbal with the handle and the audio module on top. There wont be much space if you wanna shoot in underslung mode. It's already difficult for the a7sIII with the audio module on top.

    If you get internal ND filters you cannot get the IBIS. I have the FX-6 with the Internal ND filters which is exceptional, however my footage is much shakier handheld on the FX-6 than the smoother handheld video from the FX-3 with IBIS. They both serve two different purposes. For run and gun smooth footage the FX-3. For tripod/stationary doc work or shoulder rig the FX-6.

If you are at an internal position for a company that is not media or production focused I'd recommend the fx3 unless you really need SDI, internal ND, bigger battery options and more recording options. Both are great options and if someone else is paying go for it, but since the Fx6 is out of stock consider renting it and the FX3, with the same sensor and processor it's a more economical choice, especially with the expensive media for sony cfexpress cards.

Okay, it's a little old and not perfect but has almost all the features you like (sadly, no XLR) and a great value today. What if Sony made an FS3 with APSC sensor?! • @dunnadidit

      I actually have an L bracket! But the issue is that most L brackets are designed to go to the left side, which is the same side as the flip out screen and all the connection doors and often gets in the way, even when you can swivel it or move it outwards a bit. They do work and I like what they do, but they also have a handful of annoyances that are easily fixed with that one 1/4” 20 screw on the grip.

  • @Markchristiankc
    @Markchristiankc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    To answer why there are no internal NDs... I went to an expo where a Sony rep explained it in a seminar. Basically it's because the fx3 had IBIS. Physically you can't have internal NDs and ibis on the sensor at the same time because then the ibis wouldn't work at all. Because the ibis is shifting the sensor around to compensate for camera shake, if you added internal NDs to that sensor it would be too heavy for the ibis to move the sensor around. So it's basically just either or 🤷🏻‍♂️
