I have a9, a7riv and a1. The af on a7riv is the most unreliable af I have used even compared to my older Nikon DSLR bodies. I'm glad you pointed this out as it has been a major fail on this hi-res line. The a1 is definitely worth the extra $ and the problems with the a7r5 focusing make it a much better buy for pros.
I really enjoyed this video. The information was useful and well-selected, and I adored the lighthearted vibe. I think it's a great choice to remind viewers that everything is awesome these days camera-wise, and we should just have fun and enjoy these devices regardless of brand. Loved it! 🤓💜
The improved image stabilization is far and away the most important feature for me. Claimed 8-stops versus 5.5. As a mountaineer and stills photographer who hand-holds in low light for landscape, this is a huge improvement over the a7r4. Would love it if you did the comparison in a follow-up review video.
I came hoping for a Tony signature "sharp shots below the reciprocal rule" graph, especially compared to the R5 that he praised for hand-hold-ability. I've been in search of a full frame IBIS system to compete with the IBIS experience of my 2015 Olympus m43 camera; Canon sounds like it's getting close, but after shooting Sony for 5 years I'd love to see them catch up and not have to switch...
@@stephenbash2721 I have been shooting both the Canon and the Sony but with DSLR Canon and the A7R3 mirrorless SOny, and the one thing I am constantly bothered with, even after some brackets and the LGrip is how wonderful the Canon feels in the hands, while I just have to live with the pain and discomfort of the Sony body. After a lot of videos, I think the R5 is my way to go.
This video changed my life. "Enjoy your life", that's some Dali Lama level stuff right there! Honestly though, I love that you leave the takes where your personality comes through in the final edit.
You are the only folks that actually performed a test of the new pixel shift feature. This is the one feature that I want considering now Sony claims it can be used with landscape photography. I'm curious to know how well the movement detection and elimination works with more natural movements like the leaves on a tree. Hoping to see this tested by you soon.
That first shot I could tell the autofocus is a million times better. I spend a lot of time in the a7riv viewfinder, I could literally feel the improvement. Sick
Haha, "a few years old" sounds like 6-7 years :D But it's just 2 years and yeah, it's "still" an excellent camera 🙂Don't know why so many people are talking about R5II or R6II.
@@downlink_x You would be mad because when a new camera is released it virtually makes your camera « old »? That’s a very strange reasoning. I personally don’t buy a camera to brag about it being the « current best one ». I buy a camera to take pictures :) The new camera doesn’t make your « now old » camera perform any less good than when you bought it. Your camera still performs exactly the same. The reality is that moving fast has brought tremendous innovation to all of us.
I watched this again as I am trying to decide whether to go with Sony or Canon for the a7r 5 or the R5 and this was super helpful. I appreciate you all for everything that you do and that is why I bought your book in order to help support the channel. Keep up the great work Tony and Chelsea! We Love you'z!
Still happy and in love with my old tech Canon 6D Mk i .. ❤️ Perfect for portraits with my similarly old tech EF 135mm F/2 The 2 combined give me a nice artistic bokeh, lovely colours, beautiful skin rendition Not sure I would get the same artistic result with 60 MP sensor and the latest ultra-sharp lenses
Thank you for labeling the camera when you said "this one". Bothered by that for years across so many reviews (and reviewers) pointing to similar looking items on a table.
Even has a hobbyist, I've used 8K to while in Hawaii to film the volcano as I only brought a 200mm lens and with shooting in 8K, I could really crop in and got an amazing video. It does come in really handy. Not often but really handy.
I gather from other reviewers that those who got their hands on this camera ahead of release did so for a very short time. You guys seem to have done a lot of testing with the camera in a very short time compared to others. Thumbs up!
Are y’all going to do the classic deep dive on this camera’s menu system? I learned so much from you in the one for the A7R IV. ❤ Thank you for the amazing work you two do!
Love you both for what you do and who you are. Thanks for this raw awesome review. Very helpful. Cheers to you guys and always glad to see new videos in my feed from you!
After just going to my first air show this past weekend, I'm finding a lot of my pictures to be out of focus. I'm was using the R and R7 with the R7 out performing the R by a long shot. However, lots of pics still weren't in focus as much as I would like. This Sony with airplane tracking would be pretty handy! But I'm quite invested in Canon gear and lenses and don't want to change. I hope Canon gets on the ball and has aviation tracking soon!
I love how you two interact when making your TH-cam videos. Educational and fun to watch. Progressing through your TH-cam careers you have added an edginess that only makes it that much better. I have to say that I am still drawn toward the Canon R5. 2 years old and it still rocks the competition. Sony, however, is definitely neck and neck. As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying. Drones, I mean drones....😉
They are different products, this is a direct upgrade to the a7R IV, the non R version aims for different usage, but regards to the new AI Focus system, with better prediction, tracking and subject recognition, this is the next step into the Sony Focusing system, and the improved IBIS . If you care for those specs then yes, it is an upgrade. But if you are interested in the non R cameras lineup, I suggest to wait for the A7 V which should come with the same improvements.
I was interested in the a7r line back when the mark III was about to hit. I was looking to upgrade from an a65 at the time. I never did pull the trigger. I chose an a99ii instead to keep with the SLTs. I love the camera, but I kind of wished I chose full mirrorless. Because I am a hybrid shooter, so high MPs appeal to me as well as great video color depth. I'm surprised that the 10-bit 4.2.2. is not mentioned more in the reviews! I think I want to finally make the jump to mirrorless this because I am sold on the 10-bit video. The A1 checks the box too, but the price demands too much justification.
You can also keep using your old glass for stills and even get eye tracking with the LA-EA5 adaptor, at least with the iv. Hopefully they will continue to support it with the V.
Having used the A7iii since 2018 I can tell you that your choice of focus point is most likely why you’re missing focus. Small subject = small AF point. Flexible spot is too broad. AI is great but you still have to give it parameters or guidelines to operate in. Flexible spot is meant for larger subjects like people, dogs, cars, etc that have more contrast and are moving. Using it on very small or distant subjects is kind of like tracking a car on earth with JWST (not the right use case and overkill). AI and AF are great, but we still have to think for the camera a little bit. At weddings, when I’m taking ring photos I just use a small regular focus point and I pretty much always get the shot with the 50 f1.2 GM. When the dance floor gets wild using flexible spot will be quite interesting to watch (green dots all over the place). If you give the camera less freedom it will nail focus more often than not. I often turn off face detection, use a medium focus point, and program eye-AF to the AF-On button so I have more say in what the camera does. As always… this is subjective 😂. But it works for me and even with the A7III I barely missed shots using the 50 F1.2 at F1.2 lol. I ended up buying the A7RV! This camera is insane! I appreciate your hard work on the reviews, it helps!
So basically the A7R5 is a Canon R5 that was released two years ago minus a few features that may or may not really matter? With Sony's prices catching up since they're no longer the "underdog", the choice isn't so clear and I'm not sure why people are still fanboying over Sony.
I'm so glad that Sony has essentially brought back the screen mechanism from the A-Mount (A77ii, A99ii), with just a move out instead of staying central. This might be the body that finally gets me to move away from the A-mount. Maybe.
The mechanism of the α77 and α99 (both generations each) is different - that one doesn't flip to the side, the one of the α7R-V does. The one of the α77/α99 was way thicker thats why they never implemented that. This one is quite thin so Sony finally managed to find a solution :)...
I honestly can't take this video seriously. To claim that the A7R IV's autofocus is unusable in low light is outright bull$h!t. If you are shooting in such low light that it won't focus, then your images will be $hit because there will be little to no available light. In normal, real-world use, it focuses just fine. In fact, it focuses much better than most all other full-frame cameras that were around just a few years before it's launch...and somehow those were pretty good in weddings and low light situations back in their day. If you are having trouble using an A7R IV in weddings, then you need to go take some photography lessons. It's YOU, not the camera.
Very interesting, i was considering getting the A7R IV because it has animal eye AF in stills AND video, but this video put me off. However I can't afford the A7R V. So your comment that the A7R IV is just fine has made me rethink again. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you for this comparison video. I think I will save up and wait for the.... A1-II since I would like to have the 1/400 flash sync speed, fast silent shutter when needed, crazy accurate autofocus, 50MP plus the A7RIV's tilty screen and subject recognitions.
Enjoying my life as requested. Best sign-off - you should ALWAYS use it! Great vid, as usual. As a Nikon shooter, it is interesting seeing what the other players are putting out there ...also it is more convincing than ever that I have absolutely no need to make any change in the kit whatsoever. Haha. If anything, I need to get better at using the tool I have in my hands and - I think I probably won't be changing it for another 5-7 years. Thanks, as always.
Really helpful video. Loved the comparo of your dog Sandy as a pup and at 17. Very clever. The Canon R5 is a monster and still holding its own. Just wish these mirrorless icons were even smaller, rivaling compact FF.
Hi Tony and Chelsea Great video, thank you so much! Despite its limitations, I was surprised that the A7Rv does not seem to nail the focus more often for BIF. Did you try several adjustment options in the menu and despite this, the results in the video were the "best" results? Also, I wonder whether the camera learns while being used or "learning" will be implanted via firmware upgrades. Many thanks! Samuel
Went from A7RIV to A7RV. I waited and waited based on the video here and others. Then I rented the A7RV for a week. First, I had to update a few of my lenses for the AI AF. Yes it was a night and day difference as far as nailing AF. Groups of pelicans and other flocking birds I could select one bird and the AI AF stayed on that bird even when others flew in the view. That to me was stunning. Another thing I noticed was the AWB really changed. No longer was the color as cool but more Canon Nikon mix. I mean Canon colorish (warmer), and Nikon in terms of contrast and DR (especially in the shadows). AWB huge improvement. Using the A7RV for RE video the AWB was so much faster to change when lighting of the room varied. This was a PITA with the other cameras we used. People with Daylight bulbs in one room, a Soft White in a hallway and those orangish tungsten edison bulbs in their kitchen fixtures. That was always a start and stop nightmare even with the A1 some of our guys used. The A7R reacting of AWB was almost seamless and even worked with dramatic iso settings going into rooms with really blown out windows, bumping up EV to another stop to compensate the camera exposing the brighter window scene down which killed all ambient and even additional lighting in the room. This is quite normal and bothersome for any video shooting unless you have a Red which can handle it much faster. After the A7RV rental I just ended up buying one. We have the A1 at work here and to me I didn't find a ton of difference with the AF with the exception of the Sony lenses I used after those updates. The AI AF nailed birds, insects and so on. Last week I bought the 70 200 F4 and even the Macro on that lens with the A7RV just amazed me. I also found the AI AF works differently based on the focus modes being used. For sports and faster smaller birds, kids swinging on a playground set, kids baseball or soccer games, I found the wide mode focus area better for EYE AF, but focus mode on the 200 600 not on FULL worked much better. I don't know why that is other than giving the lens a range, but I'll keep testing it out. Great video!!!!
4K 120 is important to me and is a benchmark for wildlife video. The A7R5 can't do it however the FX30 can and it's basically the A7R5 sensor in crop mode. Technically they could have done it, I think, but it would be need a 2.4 times crop. This is a clear win for the Canon R5. However my question is: who does 4K 120 better; the Canon R5, or the Sony FX30?
22:00 I hate that you're making a big deal out of this. OK, Canon discontinued the 3rd party lenses, but there wasn't actually that many anyways. Plus don't forget about the EF-RF adaptor, wich works great.

If you want to truly test the autofocus, shoot with a light front fill against a bright backlit window, which I do in at least half my sessions. My A7Riv focuses extremely well on eye focus, right up until I shoot against a lot of soft backlight pouring into the lens which really confuses the autofocus. Then I have to give up and use medium point focus and choose hair, or something else in the same focal plane as the eye, because it’s not going to catch the eye in that situation. If the A7Rv could do that, I’d upgrade tomorrow. But shooting with only front light is a good test but not definitive.
Looks like the verdict is: for new buyers into new system: Sony A7rV or Canon R5. Pro wedding: Canon R5. Portrait: Any (lights matter more!) Wildlife: R5. Video A7rV. Pixelshift: actually usable now!
Thank you Chelsea & Tony, I was looking for a straight answer on wildlife from someone who actually shoots wildlife WRT a1 vs a7RV. Going to pick up my A1.
Nice review enjoyed it very much, Got home to see tips and setups, your video was recommended. I Just purchased the Sony IV, upgrades from R3. But I have been using the R5 at work, company camera equipment, they have all Canon, Long story short, The Sony is By far the King of Auto Focus, with R5 i have missed some moments
Great video - couple of questions on the A7rv compared to the others - dynamic range and rolling shutter comparison? Also my 2 cents on the A7riv for wildlife. I think you are not being fair on the A7riv as a wildlife camera. I shot most days for about 6 months with a Sony 600F4 for wildlife and the A7riv - I found that autofocus was adequate for birds in flight. Not all shots were keepers but some were - especially the first couple in a burst. You couldn't just point and shoot the camera, you had to point, wait for the camera to acquire focus in the screen and then shoot. The Sony A7riv just couldn't keep up with the tracking if you had a burst longer than a second or so. Perched or slow moving subjects were not a problem except in very low light. Mark Smith whose videos I watch and is a far more experienced photographer than me seemed to rate the A7riv as a wildlife camera too. I have used an A1 for the last 7 months and it only cost me £700 more new than the price of an A7rv. Why anyone would buy an A7rv at that price I just don't understand.
Would u please compare the low light noise performance between A7R5's 26mp lossless compressed raw and A7iii's raw? I think this is a critical point that could change the upgrade decision for an existing A7iii owner.
@@TonyAndChelsea focus stacking is now much easier. Yes, this feature is very useful for those of that want sharp focus front to back. Wish you discussed it.
I was finally able to purchase a used, like new, Nikon D4 because of all the people giving up on DSLR's . The D4 and my D500 are all I need for many years of great images. My last two Sony purchases were at one time Blu Ray players. Due to a required update to both units they are now just expensive paper weights so no more Sony products for me.
...... still miss my 5DMKIV sold it when I switched to mirrorless ( Sony A7RIV and Sony A7IV ) and often regret doing so, forget megapixels autofocus points up the wazo etc etc, at the end of the day what matters is the overall picture and imo there is just something about that 5DIV that even without post it just looks great colour sharpness etc. there comes a point where its just overkill and that goes for alot of todays tech from cars to appliances to ? and for cameras I think we surpassed it long ago. There are a number of very very talented professional photographers and content creators that are using cameras that are 10 + years old and the only way I know this is because they have said so.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have a Nikon D850 now and shoot landscape and nightscage. Did I hear you wright when you said Adobe will not take Raw taken with the Sony A7R V? So, you can't use Lightroom and Photoshop with the Sony A7RV if you shoot in Raw? Also, 3 years ago you put out a video on Nikon may be having financial problems. How are they doing now?Thank you.
Was a tad worried that I would have regrets of buying the A1 after seeing this camera come out but I don’t. I am excited to see what the mark II A1 will have though! That screen would be very useful.
i have an a9 and just spent two weeks with an a1. Filming at 8k stopped due to overheating. If you pull the screen back, the heat can escape better. The 50MP was nice, but the overheating potential and the price had me sending it back. The a7r V looks like it will be a better fit for me. Thanks for the info!
@Rebel Hikes not true. Mark Galer took photographs of the Moto GP where bikes were going 180MPH, w/the A7RV. It nailed focus every time. A good photographer knows how to make the camera work for him. Not everyone needs thousands of photos to delete later on, if they nailed focus on the first shot. AI is not going to the A1 as it needs a processor that don’t exist for the A1.
@@garrettstevensen2467 I have a9, a7riv and now a1. The a7riv was the worst autofocusing camera I have ever used. First time I used it on a static subject on a tripod it started to hunt. I have had no problems with a9 and a1 in af in all sorts of tough conditions. When I heard it was the same sensor as the old camera I had a feeling af would be an issue. As you can see in this review TC also had problems with the AF and as stated it might be the readout speed from this sensor.
Tony and Chelsea - Thank you for the complete and objective review. I'm currently shooting both wildlife and travel photography with my Sony A7R3a camera. Like you, I have experienced a few challenges in capturing sharp focus with flying birds. The Canon R5 system is out of the question as an upgrade simply because I have invested so much in the Sony system. So, should I move to the Sony A7R4 or A7R5? I'm off to buy a few lottery tickets to help decide my fate! Again, please keep up the great reviews. They are always unbiased and fun to watch.

Thank You for the review, love the relaxed atmosphere. Would really love to see more pixel shift images side by side with regular images. Also could you test the stabilization. Heard it is supposed to have 8 stops. The new Hasselblad has 7 stops and you can shot up to 1 second exposure handheld without any camera shake.
I love Sandy verry sweet. Wow, your animals or kids is what I call mine. 💯 thousand extra thumbs up.thank you both for all the time you all take to explain 📸 photography.😊
I have always shot with canon and the R5 was my first prosumer body... but with the lack of 3rd party lenses its either a waiting game or eventually I feel like I am going to need to switch
The reason to have 3rd party lens is have cheap alternatives, but Canon does have the extremely strong EF line up. The only reason to turn down EF is weight. Since you have been shooting with Canon for a while. Isn't the perfect compatibility of EF-RF save you cost of buying a whole line of lens again?
Super great report/video right there!! As to the camera: no, the jello-effect and the lower FPS,… I’ll wait for the A1-mark 2 before adding another camera to complement my A1.
@Rebel Hikes I'm on a 7RII and it is worth for me to upgrade just for the possibility of quickly toggling to crop and being able to produce smaller RAW files, as well as being able to shoot long exposures hand held when I don't have time to setup my tripod. The super flippy screen can also come handy for framing landscape shots in brigh daylight when paired with a Hoodman loupe, this is something I've been waiting for years now. This camera overlaps many good functionalities of other cameras at a lower price.
Provided other reviewers confirm the autofocus for BIF/action wildlife isn't as good as hoped on the A7RV, then that along with the 10 fps max is a huge let down for the price considering the R5 is so capable autofocus wise, and considering the A1 should drop in price and is an absolute beast.
I'm a wedding photographer with 2/810 and 6 main Nikon lenses. For years I have been on the fence to switch to sony and then the z9 came out. This is the challenge, sony has a bigger selection for their mirrorless over Nikon with the z mount. I understand that I can get two ftoz adapters and keep using my lenses and just buy a z9. but for that same price, I can get the A7RV and a lens with no need for adapters. Eventually, my F mounts lenses would "need" to be switched. I feel that this is the time to make a decision because nonetheless still a change from DSLR to mirrorless. What do you think?
Z9 is the way to go. It's big and heavy, but really it is built for many years. If you switch to Sony you get 1 lens and then you need to sell all your f glass for nothing and buy m. You will also sell your f glass as the z glass is so much better, but at least you have time and can keep your old bodies as backup. Just my opinion. Nikon keeps improving the z9. If you want a light setup and can afford to dump everything then Sony may be a good option but it won't be cheap. If you think you will go there some day then do it now. I still think Nikon has the best colors for portrait work, canon is really good too and Sony is close.
@@barryobrien1890 to me weigh is a non issue, the first thing I got for my cameras is the battery grip and I never shoot without it. I have heard about the greenish tint on Sony. Another thing I’m considering to not lose money is to get a z9 to use with my Nikon lenses and start later with a Sony and build that system at a slower pace. I’m thinking I already spent that money and would get no benefit out of giving it away but at the same time either way I will be buying new mirrorless lenses one way or another.
@@MR-si2cd agreed. I ended up moving to z glass pretty quickly after getting a z7. They are just a lot nicer. May I suggest you wait for the next Nikon body. They are supposed to release a d850 update similar to the a7r5. I personally feel Sony is a little plastic feeling for me. Maybe it's the smooth plastic. I also think the type a cards are way too expensive and type b are the way to go for size and speed of workflow. It is something to consider for the long term. If you use a grip then the z9 is probably your best bet. Try both for a few weeks before you decide through a rental, as it's a big decision and there are benefits of both
@@barryobrien1890 I waited for the longest with Nikon, I guess I’m used to it by now lol. We’ll see what happens, I’m not one to be getting every camera that comes out, I learn early on to buy once and buy good and that’s what the D810 is. I purchased the first one brand new and the second one used and all this years later can’t tell the difference. What makes me doubt about Nikon is that most of their lenses are 1.8 which I’m weird about because I have a 50 1.8 that I barely use, I either use my 85 1.4 or my zooms or 105 2.8. I would like to get something that’s 1.2 and other than I believe a 35 they don’t have that many options
@@MR-si2cd try the 1.8 z glass on a z7. I found it to outperform my 1.4 f at 1.8, and matched at about 2.8. the 70 -200 2.8 is phenomenal but bigger than Sony or canon. They will have more than the 50 1.2 soon. I have not tried that yet. I sold my 85 1.4 f and got the z 1.8, which i prefer as i rarely shoot wide open at 1.4 as i try to get more than eyelashes in focus. Anyway i think the z9 will be around a lot longer than most other z bodies, and now they are becoming available. In a few years they may become affordable used and i will upgrade my z7 which has been great. The 105 z is much better than 105 f. You will really like that lens ss well as the 24 to 120 zoom which is my daily go to lens.
So would I be better off saving my money and just get an A1 ? For all photography and all video needs ? I’m into portrait, insect and landscape photography but I also love shooting videos. Thanks
First, thank you for the video. I own a Alpha 1 but I was thinking of replacing my A7RIV and A7IV to pair it with the new A7RV. Do you see any downside to this? I do also own a Canon EOS R5 because of the need to shoot in both systems. If I sell the A7RIV and A7IV the new camera cost is covered but is there a better way to spend the $3900?
When are you guys going to review the fuji xh2 and xh2S? The xh2 being 40mp and 8k video at $2k is such a bargain and the xh2S while only 26mp and 6k has even better video specs and af with its stacked sensor for $2.5k
Hi. Thanks for the review. Interesting. My question, do you think Sony will update the a7r4 firmware with newer features in the r5? Also, will you please consider reviewing the r5 against the a1.
"MMMMph! Be respectable!" Something I have to remind myself to do. Every. Single. Day.... Anyway, I loved the humor in this video as well as the information. Really well done! :)
@@Maxime-ho9iv Well, you'll never know right. Maybe Canon will pivot its typical product release cadence due to competition from Sony. They got alot of catching up to do and with people switching to Sony. They might do just that. But then again, these are just toys for me and I don't use these cameras for paid work. I use it for my own business that's all. Photographing real estate. I'm a realtor first after all.
@@Maxime-ho9iv The R5 is already better than the A7RV in almost every way (AF, video, FPS) so there is no reason for canon to rush a new camera. They just fixed overheating and IBIS with the latest firmware. R5 is basically a perfect cam.

@@Maxime-ho9iv Yeah. I would be mad, if I’m a Sony user and they release a new model every 2 years, tbh.
@@downlink_x You would be mad because when a new camera is released it virtually makes your camera « old »? That’s a very strange reasoning.
I personally don’t buy a camera to brag about it being the « current best one ». I buy a camera to take pictures :)
The new camera doesn’t make your « now old » camera perform any less good than when you bought it.
The perfect camera is finally here, the only problem is no money.
Shit lmao 😂😂😂 tell
Me bout it I’ve been broke brah
Yup, watching this as tires are going on my car. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford upgrading from the original A7. 😅
Still happy and in love with my old tech Canon 6D Mk i .. ❤️
Perfect for portraits with my similarly old tech EF 135mm F/2
The 2 combined give me a nice artistic bokeh, lovely colours, beautiful skin rendition
Not sure I would get the same artistic result with 60 MP sensor and the latest ultra-sharp lenses
@Rebel Hikes For wildlife the A1 and R5 seem ahead still, I agree.
No 4k 120 either😞
Probably the most entertaining videos on camera comparisons

Thank you for labeling the camera when you said "this one". Bothered by that for years across so many reviews (and reviewers) pointing to similar looking items on a table.
Even has a hobbyist, I've used 8K to while in Hawaii to film the volcano as I only brought a 200mm lens and with shooting in 8K, I could really crop in and got an amazing video. It does come in really handy. Not often but really handy.
I gather from other reviewers that those who got their hands on this camera ahead of release did so for a very short time. You guys seem to have done a lot of testing with the camera in a very short time compared to others. Thumbs up!
We had it for about 2 weeks and shot with it pretty constantly.
They want that Sony money!
Nice to see you guys having some fun. It’s been a little depressing watching your videos lately and this is refreshing.

Thanks!
You guys in the canoe with your dog and $20K worth of gear gives me SEVERE ANXIETY. It makes my palms sweat lol.
¡Gracias!
I was having the same problem with the focusing UNTIL I adjusted the stickiness in the menu. Now it's a beast!
One of the best photography centric review and comparison, no bullshit great stuff thanks!
You all are the best! Thanks for this video. It really helped answer questions I didn’t even know I had yet 😅 As always your work is well appreciated!
Please do a full Sony a7RV full tutorial and setup pls!!!
is this better than the a7 iv? the non R version?
They are different products, this is a direct upgrade to the a7R IV, the non R version aims for different usage, but regards to the new AI Focus system, with better prediction, tracking and subject recognition, this is the next step into the Sony Focusing system, and the improved IBIS . If you care for those specs then yes, it is an upgrade.
But if you are interested in the non R cameras lineup, I suggest to wait for the A7 V which should come with the same improvements.
Thanks for that comparison! Love my 2x Canon R5, but Sony is also doing a damn good job! Such great tools.
Hopefully the a9iii will have a ~30MP sensor with 6K60p internal (RAW) recording and oversampled 4K60/120p with full sensor readout.
Nice typeface on the title cards. Perfect fit for the content. And yes the photos are pretty amazing as well!
Thicker? My screen on the RIVa feels like a brick compared to my 99 II ! Who cares if it was a little thicker ?
@@edkight6447 I only explained why they never used that design on α7 series cameras 😉
@@Lofote I mis read your intent, sorry. I wondered (as others) why they didn't adapt this old technology into the new E mount. It worked Great !
Great review, I have been considering upgrading my Kodak Instamatic but not sure these are much of an improvement 🤔
Thank you for this comparison video. I think I will save up and wait for the.... A1-II since I would like to have the 1/400 flash sync speed, fast silent shutter when needed, crazy accurate autofocus, 50MP plus the A7RIV's tilty screen and subject recognitions.
Thank you again Tony and Chelsea for another great review.
Great video, and I really like the screen on the new A7RV.
My question in the beginning of the video was how does the a7rV compare to the a1. You answered my question! Thank you
You were using different focus modes between the A7R IV and V. Why did you do that? You had autofocus tracking enabled on the V, but not on the IV.
Hi Tony and Chelsea
Great video, thank you so much! Samuel
It Does You have to set it up Right. I do Wildlife Photography With A7R5 and its Awesome!

I appreciate that you are (1) into wildlife and (2) prepared to call it exactly as you experience it -- thanks!
If you want to truly test the autofocus, shoot with a light front fill against a bright backlit window, which I do in at least half my sessions.
My A7Riv focuses extremely well on eye focus, right up until I shoot against a lot of soft backlight
pouring into the lens which really confuses the autofocus.
Then I have to give up and use medium point focus and choose hair, or something else in the same focal plane as the eye, because it’s not going to catch the eye in that situation.
If the A7Rv could do that, I’d upgrade tomorrow.
But shooting with only front light is a good test but not definitive.
Hi Tony, can you make a video with Chelsea about camera bodies you recommend for wedding photography, and prices. Thank you for the reviews you do❤️🧐🤖

Thank you Chelsea & Tony, I was looking for a straight answer on wildlife from someone who actually shoots wildlife WRT a1 vs a7RV. Going to pick up my A1.
How does Sony a7rV stand against the Sony A1 Image quality-wise and overall performance?
Nice review enjoyed it very much, Got home to see tips and setups, your video was recommended. I Just purchased the Sony IV, upgrades from R3. But I have been using the R5 at work, company camera equipment, they have all Canon, Long story short, The Sony is By far the King of Auto Focus, with R5 i have missed some moments
For once, my heart and my brain say YES...

Great review guys, enjoyed the advice also😂😂
I have a question, what camera is better for landscape, portraits and night photography. the Sony a7R V or Nikon d850 ?
Canon
I love your sign off! The like and subscribe sign off is so over used now, it's very refreshing to have you two just wishing me a great life!
Same sensor as a7R IV so check the pinned comment.
Would u please compare the low light noise performance between A7R5's 26mp lossless compressed raw and A7iii's raw? I think this is a critical point that could change the upgrade decision for an existing A7iii owner.
No mention of new focus bracketing feature. This is the feature I am most interested in as I use it on my Nikon D850 on nearly a daily basis.
Interesting, I never found it useful on the D850 so I didn't think much about it. I always found it easier just to manually adjust focus.
@@TonyAndChelsea focus stacking is now much easier. Yes, this feature is very useful for those of that want sharp focus front to back. Wish you discussed it.
How is the stabilization doing? This is one of the shortest point comparing with Canon. And burst mode is also slower than EOS-R5?
If you released an hourlong version of Tony's Caveman dad dance moves, I would 100% watch.
i have an a9 and just spent two weeks with an a1.

@@TigaWould so you got it? I'm now struggling between a7rv and a1. Waiting for a real life user to compare the animal eye AF between the two. I'm also a little enamored with the rv focus stacking.

My achey shakey hands can overcome any stabilization.

Please provide a menu deep dive for the rv similar to what you've done for the riii and riv...so very, very helpful...thank you so much!
Super great report/video right there!!
As to the camera: no, the jello-effect and the lower FPS,… I’ll wait for the A1-mark 2 before adding another camera to complement my A1.
I shoot sports and landscape. Occasional portraits. Canon R5 or Sony A7R V? I am used to both systems.
I'm over here rocking an A7RII. Works awesome.
Die neuen Videos sind besser als die alte Videos. Das Video hat mir sehr geholfen. Danke schön.
So would I be better off saving my money and just get an A1 ? For all photography and all video needs ? I’m into portrait, insect and landscape photography but I also love shooting videos. Thanks
Can you please repeat the comparison with the R5mkii and the A7RV?
First, thank you for the video. I own a Alpha 1 but I was thinking of replacing my A7RIV and A7IV to pair it with the new A7RV. Do you see any downside to this? I do also own a Canon EOS R5 because of the need to shoot in both systems. If I sell the A7RIV and A7IV the new camera cost is covered but is there a better way to spend the $3900?
Hi, how about the difference between the Canon R5 vs Sony a7R V in terms of dynamic range?
When are you guys going to review the fuji xh2 and xh2S? The xh2 being 40mp and 8k video at $2k is such a bargain and the xh2S while only 26mp and 6k has even better video specs and af with its stacked sensor for $2.5k
Love these camera video reviews.👍😊
that screen mechanism is amazing
You complained about focus hunting with insects, etc. Did you ignore the full time dynamic focus option to give the process a jump start?
Hi. Thanks for the review. Interesting. My question, do you think Sony will update the a7r4 firmware with newer features in the r5? Also, will you please consider reviewing the r5 against the a1.
Wow, someone besides Fuji finally figure out how to do a flip screen. It's about time. Nice job, Sony!
Sorry but this design comes from panasonics s1h not fuji.

Tony is leaning away, is that distortion from the wide angle lens?
Now I'm excited to see the Canon R5 Mark II or the Canon R1 or whatever it is if it comes with a body without the battery grip.
It will be awesome. And it will only release in 3 or 4 years. Damn!
What a great review. Thank you!
