Voltaren for arthritis pain is a cream/gel infused with diclofenac and well known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain relief. Here in our physical therapy practice, we often get asked by our patients about its use for their joint arthritis.
Here are some of the most common questions people ask us :
Can I use Voltaren for arthritis in my joint?
    Is Voltaren a natural product?
    Can Voltaren help fix arthritis?
What are the side effects of Voltaren?
Keep in mind that Voltaren is not a long term pain solution. It is intended to only give pain relief for the short term.
🔬 Here is a great research study we found about lidocaine:

63 with bad knees here. My doctor (at my request) prescribed sodium diclophinac tablets for my severe knee pain. A 100 mg tablet would last me 2 days. Sometimes even 3 days. Even after I showed him the small amount I was using, he stopped prescribing them. I tried Volteron and the the wally world equate version. It usually took 3 applications in one day before I felt relief, but it didn't last long. Not even over night. Now I do some herbal and natural oral stuff, but discovered your channel and have been doing some of your exercises. They seem to help, but nothing has worked better than those 100 mg tablets.

Also available in pill form (highly effective). The Osteo Gel version (In Australia) at 23.2 mg/g is the strongest available over the counter. The stuff just works. It is not as long lasting as a topical application as the pills are, and everyone's situation is different but it has kept me working and playing guitar for the last couple of years. The applied quantities shown in this video are ridiculously over the top and must appear on the US packaging. A 6mm (1/4 inch) application does my thumb, palm heel and inner wrist easily. Generally considered to be one of the safest NSAIDs. The generic Diclofenac products are cheaper, Voltaren is just a brand.

I took oral Diclofenac for years until I developed an allergy in the form of a Fixed Drug Eruption. I learned that all NSAIDs are common culprits in this. I also participated in a study of the topical form before I developed the allergy. After abandoning the pills for a few years (which completely stopped the reaction) Diclofenac/Voltaren became available OTC and I bravely tried it in the topical form. I use it sparingly but it has not caused me any problems. I have also used topical Arnica cream. It is just as effective for me. I find that it helps when my arthritic fingers when they flare up.

After using for about a year for my knees, I started to get a rash on my back and lower legs. Stopped using the cream and it went away within 2 weeks. Now use this cream on and off. I found using turmeric every day my pain is so much less. I make the paste with turmeric, pepper and coconut, cook in a sauce pan, mixing the whole time. I put it in small jars, place in my refrig, and take half a teaspoon in the morning and evening to help me sleep.

I am a US Marine Corp, Desert Storm/Shield Veteran. I have Arthritis in every joint in my body, along with Degenerative disk disease, bone spurs, pinched nerves, Radiculopathy and Plantar Fasciitis.
I used to use diclofenac for about two years, but it really did not relieve any pain for me. I have also used Lidocaine patches (5%) and those take some of the sharpness away from the pain, but those patches don't stick long and I have to wear 5 or 6 of them just to get any relief.
The only thing that has ever helped get rid of my Arthritis pain completely, is smoking weed!
If I take a few puffs off of a one hitter, I will have Zero pain for the next three or so days.
I live in Atlanta, Georgia USA, and weed is still illegal here, so it is hard to come by unless you know someone.

I tried Voltaren and was not impressed. At least it doesn’t have a horrible fragrance. But it doesn’t do anything. I have bone-on-bone arthritis in both knees. Voltaren just can’t penetrate deep enough into the joint to do anything. I didn’t really expect much, but when my doctor suggested, I figured it was worth a try. Good news is, my co-pay was low so at least I didn’t waste much money on it.

I bought a large tube of this at a doctor's suggestion. I read all the instructions when I got home and was too afraid to use it because I previously had a heart attack. Gave the unopened tube away to someone else. Later, I found out another member of my family bought a tube thinking it might help with his back pain but after reading the instructions decided that wasn't an appropriate use and he gave his unopened tube to me. I'm trying to decide whether to try this medication or not. My knee hurts so much but I'm still afraid of having another heart attack. Glad to see this video.

Check with your doctor. I have heart problems and had bypass surgery. My doctor suggested voltaran for my arthritis and it works well with no problems. Living with pain is terrible and affects quality of life. I do whatever I can, including using this gel, so that I can continue to do the things I enjoy. Talk to your doctor and follow his advice.

Hi I began using this about 1 month ago. The stuff works and I got relief in 2 days!. I used it for 3 more days and felt great. The downfall for me is that because it's a Nsaid like Advil and other pain relievers..it caused my blood pressure rise from 130/70 to 170/90. So I use it maybe every other week. Still helps me tremendously. I get gel injections in both knees every 6 months. Stopped the cortizone because my knee got worse after 2.5 weeks.
Thank you for your videos..awesome. by the way..I do the glute..exercises 2 times per day.

It's definitely not for everyone and we are glad to hear that you've been cautious while using it due to a blood pressure rise. It is our pleasure to be of assistance. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

I would just like to add that one should always keep in mind that we are all individuals and even if there is only a very small chance of a allergic reaction, you might happen to be that person. I certainly am. I am allergic to all NSAIDS & when I applied a small amount of Voltaren I immediately started toi feel unwell. I can't even take 1 Advil safely.
Some gp's will try to push this medication even if you tell them you've had allergic reactions to drugs such as Naproxen or Advil. This cream goes into the blood stream all the same.
I just hate the thought of patients feeling pressured by their doctor to use this because the majority of people don't have a bad reaction. Beware!

Good reminders: I was taking oral dicofenac after a car accident about 8 years ago~had whiplash~decided to go to Physical Therapy and did that for quite some time, an hour of various exercises every day! Cut back was taking the oral med still, had plantar fasciitis treated by a great podiatrist, he urged me to only "pulse dose" it for a few days at a time. Then I switched primary care doctors thank goodness. Well, I developed stomach problems (polyps) and had my 1st endoscopy 2023, then another 2024, polyps etc. removed and have completely STOPPED oral NSAIDS. Have had a neck injury from a smaller accident 2 months ago, back to PT, not taking oral NSAIDS, I can use the topical for thumb arthritis and knees. However, I avoid these things. I am a pianist and my hand doctor told me that practicing helps keep the arthritis in the thumbs at bay! I have found that to be true. Yeah long story, but doctors who just keep writing Rxs w/o periodic evaluation and updates can cause HARM. Glad we switched primary care provider in 2019 before the pandemic.
Sorry for the long comment but I have watched your videos for advice for walking for the knees and feet troubles, and your suggestions are helpful! Thanks for your videos!

I have used VOLTARIN gel, since it first came out. I have not had any side effects. I use it at night so I'm not awakened by pain in my knees and lower back. I also use Celebrex, which dulls the pain. I had to go off while using a blood thinner and realized how much it helped the pain. I am never without pain completely. I have very severe arthritis with multiple joints affected. But between the VOLTARIN and Celebrex I can at least tolerate the pain and be more mobile.

The heart attack and stroke warnings are based on adverse events when diclofenac is taken orally (and I would not use it by that route). FDA requires the warning. But with topical application there is no evidence of that effect at the concentrations used in these gels. There is quite a bit of literature on that.
