Hi, I have a F8N 1952 w/Sherman H/L I use on our hog and steer ranch. I would like to blow snow with it here in WI but the Sherman low range is too fast. Would the Howard trany in conjunction with the Sherman solve that problem? How slow does yours go with the pto at 540rpm.?........OK, I just saw your video on how slow it will go......GREAT! kirk -NJ it's hard just trying to find a howard for under a 1000 bucks. Do you know how strong the Howard is in standard gears? Or is the whole unit fragile.
The howard in this video is for sale. I have a prospective buyer in Texas but until cash in hand the deal is not done. As far as fragile question goes they are not fragile. I have plowed dirt, plowed snow, pulled logs and just about any other farm chore you could think of with this tractor.. The misconception about being fragile comes from when misuse or abused. The tractor must be at a full stop when engaging or disengaging and throttle all the way down when engaging and disengaging. Some people think this is a shift on the fly unit, It ain't. If you shift these when moving it's likely you will break teeth on the gears. As you can see it the video I point out what to look for in a good unit especially the teeth where it engages. With both the Howard and Sherman transmissions in this tractor, it has gone from a normal three forward speeds to eighteen speeds. How slow is the tractor when all three low ranges are engaged?
The tractor is slow enough that I can walk behind it and plant potatoes. You can walk faster than the tractor dives. Check out my other video. Ford 2n with auxiliary howard Transmission

The howard gives you a standard range and a low range. In low it will slow the tractor down without slowing down the PTO unlike the sherman which with effect the speed of the PTO. This is why the howard transmission was used mostly for rototilling
Provides low range for all gears without lowering the pto speed. The idea being you can slow the tractor speed way down without slowing the PTO speed (like the Sherman would) which makes it ideal for tilling.

It would be rare to find a 8n with both the sherman and the howard but both transmission could be added to an 8n.

No, you are probably better off finding someone parting one out and hope that the gear you need is not chewed up.
