Both the Howard and Sherman transmissions were dealer installed options. Not a lot of 9-2-8N tractors had them. The Sherman transmission slowed the PTO down if put in low. The Howard transmission didn't, being in the drive train after the PTO out put.
All n series tractors should have had this feature, this was their big downfall, the tractors simply went too fast in first gear, should have had a creeper gear, would have saved many of these tractors from the abuse they had to endure.
I've watched N series tractor sales in Michigan for a decade. I think the Sherman trans shows up about ten times more often than the Howard transmission.
The tractor is a 1946. Yes the howard could have a sherman combo added. The sherman transmission sat in front of the main transmission and the howard was behind the main transmission. I will be pulling the howard out within the next few days may add another video to show the howard
I've been run over by a 9N when I was a teenager. Hurt a lot less than being trampled by a sow. Hardly got a bruise out of it. These are not very heavy tractors. So the impact isn't too bad.
we had this tractor, 2n for years! Never knew about this till now!

Add a Everett aux trans between the Howard and the standard transmissions and if you really wanted to go slow then engage the Sherman step down
How common was the Howard transmission?

You might not want to get off while it’s moving, just in case
What year is that? Do you know if the Howard transmission was available with the Sherman combination?

kirk -NJ that would be awesome. There's no other videos about the Howard transmission. This has to be the best channel on the old N series
What does a step down or a step up do?
Adds gears in the low range and gears in the high range. Also adds speeds to the
PTO
Ghost ride’ the whip
Very slow indeed. Wonder how many farmers got run over fooled by the slow speed.
