Thing is for me it's not the female custodians being part of the setting that makes this bad. It's that it's an obvious marker for how shit things will be further down the line because this wasn't made with the idea of improving the lore but made with the idea of furthering a political cause.
Edit: For those of your arguing you do realize there's a much better way of adding Female Custodes? Literally just label the Sisters of Silence as Custodes and give them new units. it's so obviously not made for the sake of lore. It's made for the sake of modern-era politics.
We gotta tell the execs in GW to not push BS political agendas for the sake of it. Alienating their customer base does them - and whoever it is that is pushing said socio-political BS - no favours. It will only antagonize those who are on the fence, and see anger against said groups and individuals increase by an order of magnitude.

After the Heresy there were just a thousand last.
There should not be any (or very few) Custodians surviving from the Heresy period.
They don't age but they sometimes "retire" when they lose even a bit of their sharpness and become Eyes of the Emperor.
And they get actions and get killed or maimed sometimes.
I would suggest, in 10K years there were more than 9000 Custodians made (they rebuild their numbers and had to compensate for attrition and retirements for 10K years)
Probably 10-20-30K Custodes made in 10K years. (3 instead of 1 per year).
The limiting factor is not just the gene stock available but also their gear. A normal BananaBoy gear is probably worth the output generated by a "normal" solar system and it is custom made. And a Custodes creation is probably in that ballpark without the Emperor around to optimize the process.
Doable but people can see it is not scalable for the empire to have more than 10K Custodes at all time..

Why hasn't anyone done this in 10 thousand years? Why didn't the Alpha Legion itself, which had a bunch of hidden agents on the planet during the Siege of Terra, just do this if it's so simple?
I haven’t read it yet, and have little to no interest in doing so but it gets worse from what I hear. From my understanding she was ratted out before she could teleport the bomb into the palace and thus lost. And then she had the Captain or whoever that smelled a rat, who did the logical and loyal thing and alerted the 10,000 and is worthy of commendation, turned into a servitor. It sounds like she threw a hissy fit over loosing, which the Custodes are supposed to be above such pettiness, and punished the guy who did the right thing. That’s not grimdark, that’s grimderp.

Just a quick look at Games workshop shareholder list and its immediately clear why this retcon happened.

Another issue with this is that the Emperor doesn't want the Custodes or Space Marines to reproduce and potentially outcompete the rest of mankind. Sure he could theoretically make them all infertile but there's still _potential_ for something to slip through the cracks. So why take the risk at all?
He would only make male transhuman super soldiers to eliminate even the most remote possibility of there being even a chance at reproduction. Thus there would never be a female space marine or Custodes _ever._ The closest you'll get is the Sisters of Silence and Sisters of Battle.
Even in Astartes they would not breed Astartes rather just slightly modified humans if even that, custodes are no shown even interested in human emotions or interests, primarchs are a different story
This argument makes no sense, in my opinion. If custodes had a chance of accidentally being fertile, then male custodes and space marines would be capable of spreading those genetics a lot further and without notice than female ones. If this was a reason, then there should be only female space marines and custodes, not male ones, because their reproduction would be much easier to control and oversee than their male counterparts'.
This is just part of the explication. The major issue is that like in irl military, men are just physically stronger than women. Why spend the unholy amount of ressources it takes to make a Space Marine or even a Custodes and not having the best result possible ? The Imperium (and mostly the Mechanicum in this case) just think from a pure mathematical point of view.

And also because I imagine there are far more important factors than physical strength, when it comes to becoming a Custodes. Not to mention that muscles and bones get literally replaced, anyway.

@@DR0hNO There...are male SoB units. Missionaries, Preachers, Crusaders, and 1/2 of the Daemonifuge (Kyganil) are male. Missionaries and Preachers bypass the Ecclesiarchy by not being "men under arms" but rather holding roles as orators and squad leaders when absolutely necessary, their only arms being small guns for self defense. The Preacher has a slightly bigger weapon but is more apt to being the squad leader for a melee heavy group like Crusaders who bypass the Ecclesiarchy's decree by being bodyguards for the Preachers/Missionaries not an extension of the entire Ecclesiarchy. Kyganil, being a former Harlequin, couldn't care less about the Ecclesiarchy's decree and is still following Ephrael Stern for...some reason?

As a tau (and Dark Angels) player I can assure you that GW does not give a fuck about established lore. Especially when you have the 'good fortune' of being handled by Phil Kelly for a decade.
The Gravitic Drive that enabled the entire empire to happen in the first place? Nope. Kelly says; "No FTL. Entire empire is a few lightmonths long." so now all 30+ star systems fit into the Oort Cloud. Kroot joined the empire in 956.M38 at the latest? Nope, 100 years or so, as per Kelly in Shadowsun: The Patient Hunter. Farsight is a selfish, impetuous, and xenophobic renegade that exemplified the 'dark side of the tau' and who's top acolyte, Brightsword, was responsible for the Koloth Gorge Massacre that saw him recalled to T'au to answer for his crimes? Nope, Kelly says; "Aktchually, Farsight represents the ~~best~~ in tau and he has done literally nothing wrong ever never ever." Don't even get me going on his dogshit portrayal of Ethereals as comically evil caricatures that would be too stupid to tie their own shoes if they had any feet, in stark contrast to literally every portrayal of them prior (and no they weren't always depicted as being good- rarely were they anything less than unsettling).
Phil Kelly was the top narrative guy for the better part of a decade at GW, so a lot of his garbage was stuck into the codex(es) because he was the one writing them. Of course, they didn't say who wrote them anymore, but you start to recognize his handiwork. Remember War Zone Damocles? Remember how fucking stupid all of that was? Remember how, for some reason, the High Lords of Terra sent FOUR Imperial Assassins to Agrellan to go after the tau command structure? Including a Culexus assassin? Remember how they sent a CULEXUS ASSASSIN to kill a TAU ethereal? That was Kelly's work.
If you're wondering why I didn't comment on Dark Angels, it's because I had the good sense to read my 4th edition Codex and then literally never touch another piece of lore outside of it.

Not even a hardcore huge fan, but use simple logic.
1. The emperor made primarch
2. The emperor made thunder warrior
3. The emperor made space marines
4. The emperor made custodes.
All these projects have 1 thing in common being male. Im not sexist but look at it, the emperor himself have been working on 4 seperate project(you could also say some of the project are similar), that is the XY chromosomes. Female XX and male XY are two different ball games, now why would he turn his attention on XX while he already have difficulties on XY. Would the logic be easier to increase XY from 50 to 100 per year made more sense, instead of starting and tinkering with XX. Now the emperor is basically a battery and only 1 custodies are made per year, ....... who in the right mind would put resources into something that even the emperor did not bother touching.

Female Spartans work in Halo because the earliest lore established that the augmentations to create Spartans work on both men and women, with similar failure rates. We know because of established lore that some Spartan IIs whose augments initially failed were later rehabilitated and achieved Spartan status. Halsey's research was canonically recorded by ONI, and therefore could be further studied and improved upon, with the Spartan III program reducing the failure rate at the expense of the strength of the augmentations, and the Spartan IV program improving MJOLNIR armor to compensate.
Female Custodes do not work in Warhammer because the lore established that the Custodes were selected from the *sons* of noble families. Only the Emperor fully understood the process of creating a Custode in the first place, and he never really taught anyone the full process, or wrote it down, presumably to keep the process from being misused. Even if the Imperium decided to open the recruitment pool to women, they might not be able to create a viable femstode because they do not understand the process and thus cannot improve upon it.
In Halo, the knowledge to create a Spartan was retained and thus could be improved upon over time, even then it took four generations of Spartans to realize what the UNSC was trying to create with the original Orion project. In Warhammer, the knowledge was lost, and the only person who fully understood how to create a Custode is in no position to teach anyone. To improve the process to work on women, you would either have to redevelop the procedure from scratch, or reverse engineer the process from a living custode, neither of which is happening in a society where the idea of improving upon the design of your immortal God Emperor is seen as heresy and blasphemy. That little bit of lore alone ensures that the genesmiths never improve upon the limited knowledge they do have, even after 10,000 years. The loss of knowledge even made creating new Custodes a slow and dangerous process.
Games Workshop tried to lie that femstodes were a thing since the beginning, but the oldest 40k lore does not support this statement. This was a deliberate retcon to cater to a "modern audience" that has been repeatedly proven to not exist.

All these three have different goals for their existence, both inside and outside the setting. The same with the female forces. The Guard, then the sister of battle, and at the top the sisters of silence. If they wanted female super soldiers, they would make the sisters of silence such. Changing the Custodes in this way takes away from the sisters of silence because, at the end of the day, they are the female representation of 40k.

You know, back when I was first getting into 40k, I distinctly remember reading somewhere, or maybe I heard it, regardless, I was given the impression that the creation of space marines is something women don't possess the biological fortitude to survive the augmentation process. That's just for space marines. The custodians would've been something else entirely.

I commented on something before about perhaps the gene crafting procedure was so thorough that it would work on male or female but result in the same end product. I had not considered the necessity of standard PURE human breeding to continue the base population pool growth to continue having Custodians. Now, to answer your question, while I do not want female Custodes, I do not mind a few female CUSTOS (SINGULAR NOMINATIVE, COMPLY BY KEEP USING IT), because they, the CUSTODES (PLURAL) could have been created during the Great Crusade by the Emperor, presumably for female tasks like diplomacy. You guys don't know, but in the army, female soldiers will always have superior, nigh magical ability to gain the trust of civilians, which male soldiers will never be able to do, even if she is being puppeted by male officers. Would you rather trust Mortarion, Pert or Angron to get a planet to compliant diplomatically, or a vitruvian wahman ? And there are noble bloodlines that the Emperor could have want extinct, such as those of the ennemy techno-barbarian warlords of Terra, which is why he recruited their sons, long before their was a solidified concept of Imperial Nobility. And so, there are bloodlines that the High Lords could want extinct, but find wasteful to kill as they were still terran nobles with millennia old history... such as the Vandire family.

@@ThePontiusGlaw69 he has always done so like when he ordered that one sister of battle to off that one High lord, or when he has brought saints back from the dead. How about that one girl who was given his power and died soon after when the warp storms first started after the fall of cadia.
@angellara7040 he barely talks and most of his will is done subconsciously. Even for custodes it's rare to get an actual message and it's usually just prophetic dreams
@@kingcrab7837 if he needs to he can force himself to talk. He did that with girlyman, at first it was dozens of fractured voices before they started speaking as one. I think his body guards losing the vast majority of their members would count as something important
@angellara7040 guillimen literally died and probably most of the imperium would've. Custodians are meant to be kept at low numbers and their isn't exactly a shortage of sons so the emperor isn't going to pull the stars together just so he can fill out a DEI qouta
