For what its worth. I agree with the general message thus far. The canon is important. The comon counter argument i see is regarding the necrons but the necrons added to the universe amd setting there was a reason for them to be changed.

IMPO : Changes that seemingly fly in the face of established lore (insert IP) and go against the grain of what is commonly accepted, known, or perceived - can only really take one narrative position and remain within good faith and good standing of the (said IP's) fanbase.
That narrative position or framework is "Revelation".
This only works when it is will thought out, explained, makes sense and makes the audience look back upon previous pieces to see if the new revelation fits in and works with what was previously established.
It's the sentiment behind "everything you have been told is a lie".
The level and intensity of how hard said revelation can go against what was previously thought to be true though has levels of acceptable tolerance but the quality of writing, intent and how well thought out it is remains static as required aspects otherwise the revelation becomes nothing other than a cheap story telling technique void and devoid of substance and soul.
Take for example an Episode of Star Trek Voyager called "Muse". This story is specifically about story tellers and story telling.
There is a scene where one of the older writers is criticizing the younger writer for relying on cheap techniques and tropes within story telling to create reactions from his audiences without any of them really being earned in the story and only used because they are popular tropes as well as to use them to manipulate his audiences.
This is the difference between creating a new story from your imagination that fits in line with a world or pushing that slightly, even expands on or makes you question what may be possible and push that horizon of possibility - VS - someone going; hey lets just copy Guardians of the Galaxy for the 14th time because people like that movie.

As a writer, I have mountains of notes just for one story. You have to build a world carefully.

Hell, even for running a DND campaign i have a whole folder of notes and documents linking pc's to plot points, questlines, npcs, future hooks etc.
Without attention to detail people see behind the curtain and instead of seeing the world i want to immerse them in they instead see its just me and a crippling caffiene addiction.

The argument that "this is fantasy, therefore we can change what I want" is rarely a good faith argument. It is usually a debate trick or gotcha to get you to shut up.
A better alternative would be "this is a wargame, it's meant to be maleable."
"Okay, then I'll change what I want and now the stuff you like is no longer canon."

But one a somewhat more serious note, that how lore kinda always been in Warhammer 40k. Just look at the Necrons
I think the reason why lore is so important it's because it gives people more reasons to care about the game and the setting sure Warhammer would probably still sell if it was just a tabletop war game but the Lore definitely increases the value of 40k as intellectual property in general because it's not just stuck being a tabletop war game.

Another reason the femstodes blood game was crap and lore breaking is that it simply didn't make any sense. The whole point of the Blood Games is to test the defenses of the Imperial Palace. To see how an assassin could manage to gain access. And these tests were done by the Custodes personally. They used their own set of skills to try to infiltrate the Palace. Heck Amon Tauromachian took drugs to stop his heart so he could enter the Palace without the scans sensing him. That's what the Custodes do. They stay on Terra and use their own power to complete the Blood Game.
They don't take the easy road by magically trying to teleport a freaking bomb and assassinate the Emperor. They don't go into orbit of Terra and try to force a plan by using other people.
Now that I think about it.. it's an Ork plan. This is something only an Ork would think about.

What a lot of people don't understand about 40k ( or Warhammer in general), especially newer fans, is that it is a setting not a narrative. It is a framework from with individual stories can be couched in. The problem with making 40k a narrative (like GW is want to do now) is that "progressing" such a story inevitably means disregarding, dismantling, or outright destroying the framework which initially facilitated it (i.e. resurrecting the Primarchs, inventing the Primaris, waking up all the Necrons, splitting the galaxy in two, etc etc).
Honestly, at this rate, I feel like 40k is headed towards it own version of Fantasy's downright disrespectful End Times. Give it 5-10 years, and I think we'll see 40k have its own AoS-type "successor".
As soon as they run out of Primarchs watch GW try to resurrect the Emperor.

GW should have never let Cadia fall (it didn't ;) and just keep the framework in place; with a million planets, there's room for global campaigns and stuff. In my head-canon the setting is the same as it was in 3rd edition (when I started playing).
You misunderstand. 40k has already had the end times! The age of primarchs is upon us.
Think, "Gaunt's Ghosts". A tale of epic proportions, Heros, Villains etc. But technical not affecting the wider universe. On an galactic scale. insignificant. I'm like 99% in camp "Sandbox", never understood why people want a progressing story.

The problem I have with Primaris is that it - correct me if I'm wrong - eliminates all gene seed flaws. That means Blood Angels don't have the Red Thirst, Space Wolves don't have Wulfen, and so on. They can't fall to Chaos. It just makes them different colors of army soldiers without any unique characteristics other than the things they carry.
Primaris Blood Angels still have red rthirst, still Space Wolves have Wulfen and Primaris fall to Chaos. (many fall to Khorne after Choral Engine exploded with psychic scream).
In creating Primaris Cawl thought that they will be highly-resistand and nearly immune to it, but he didnt know everything about maladies of space marines chapter, because it is their higly guarded secret. He was unawere of Sanguinius Curse or Leman Russ curse.
Check GW website and go to blood angels. You will se Death Company Intercessors.
There's no way that Primaris aren't all going to fall at once, and make Heresy 2 Psychic Boogaloo

When they introduced them that was the suggestion, but they seemed to realise pretty quickly that that was boring so they walked it back with each new codex. It might've been the plan all along but they leaned too heavily on the suggestion that the PMarines were perfect, which in a universe were part of the charm of the Marines was that they were imperfect made the PMarines look super boring to lots of fans.

There are many "rules of writing", and there are also writers who are skilled enough to subvert those unofficial rules. But the one rule that remains ironclad, despite rarely being mentioned, and the one rule that remains consistent across all forms of media and genres is thus:
"NEVER WASTE YOUR AUDIENCE'S TIME!"
Thus, if you write a story, fictional or otherwise, serious or satire, tragedy or comedy, book or movie, the one thing you must never do is make your audience believe that engaging with your story was a waste of time. This is why remaining consistent with the lore is so important, because when people are invested in your story, they'll expect their investment to pay off in the end. If you disregard the lore, and simply do whatever you wish with the story on a whim, then the audience will realize that all of their prior investment was for naught, and you have thus wasted their time.
This is why lore matters, and why people who say it doesn't are not to be trusted.
Surprised you didn't bring up Bruva Alfabusa. TTS may be entertaining, but I'd say it has also done a bit of damage. Hell, if I'm not mistaken, Bruva Alfabusa actually backed Templin during his whole "Fem Astartes are possible if you ignore the lore" shtick.

Ama question: have you heard/watched anything by Pilgrim Pass? I know he doesn't exactly cover 40k in great depth, but he's still put out a few videos on them.
Slightly off topic from that is that I got into 40k because of one of his videos. I'm mostly here for the lore, and specifically hearing an Italian talk about 40k has got to be one of thr funniest things I've ever heard. I really appreciate your videos, as you have a lot of passion about Warhammer. Keep doing The Emperor's work brother.

Since your talking about lore tubers whats your opinion on Arch? He is usually considered either the number 2 or 3 when it comes to lore channels.
even if he is controversial, and a bit monotone in the type of presented content, he is one of the most accurate ones.
I'd say Arch is fine. He's a Libertarian, even if a bit disgruntled at times with activists who keep gaslighting lore fans. His knowledge of lore is really good. I don't know why he's controversial though. He simply opposes activists changing etertainment for political purposes, which a few recent changes to 40k like female custodes are.

At least he is now following his own principles by separating his political videos from his 40K channel. I know he isn't perfect, but I don't like a lot of the takes that paint him as controversial as the reasons usually are an attack on pretty normal views. Yours seem fine.
Arch's main thing now is gatekeeping political activists who want 40k changed to suit them out. He is speaking for fans like me who are tired of stuff being changed and the concept of canon and lore treated as dirt you can just throw away.

No one has time for identity politics and inclusivity when they're being attacked by literal demons and alien abominations invading from another galaxy. Honestly I love your work. Not only for the research and the passion, but also because you have the will to form concrete and well-argumented opinions and bring them forward (a behaviour I'd surely like to see more in people...). I'm not completelt sharing every thought, but I truly appreciate calling out hypocrisy and superficiality, especially in an universe where you can dive deep and find wonderful complexity.

I honestly never found inaccuracies in Bricky's videos, and as you said, Adeptus Ridicolous is, at its core, a podcast that is supposed to introduce to the universe with a light take on the lore of the factions and characters, so to make it easier to new fans to get to know the universe without overwhelming them, so later they can get deeper into the parts of the lore they like the most.
Again, as you said, their motto is "Entertainment before Accuracy" and they never stated to be a channel where people can get te totality of the lore, on they contrary they invite people to deepen their knowledge of 40k

Plus, they also make Bookclub episodes, where they actually discuss about the lore in books, going straight to the source of 40K lore.

Lore is the glue that holds the universe together, if you dilute it the bonds break people stop respecting it. We are the point were it holds or it breaks.

My knowledge of 40K lore is more or less in the middle. Love the setting, don't know all the lore, but I know the basics of the worldbuilding, albeit a lot of my knowledge is a bit old. I'm not a guy who who'd do a lore channel. 40K is a setting that if you need to do everything, you may as well do it like a historian who specializes in one or a few areas of history. This is why I like Arch and a few others who are detailed for most stuff I can't research myself or read for myself. Janovich's videos are really interesting and remind me of those history documentaries.
Ever since I first played Dawn of War on PC in the 2000's I loved 40K. It';s also refreshing to also find someone who, like me, truly understands the true significance and need for canon and lore in worldbuilding and storytelling. My own understanding of 40k isn't perfect, i'd even say some of it is outdated because of a long break from 40k's deeper lore for a few years while history took it's priority. Heck, I only just found out the Primaris Marines were even a thing a short while ago, or that the galaxy supposedly has split into two. I also still call the Eldar, Eldar.
I also really like your sentiment. 40k should be defended from all political activists inserting propaganda, because it's a story for anyone who loves sci fi and fantasy. I'm new to your channel, and look forward to watching some of your lore coverage too.

Video suggestion from a humble casual with a deep respect for actual lore: what were the “good” changes to the setting? I’ve heard some snidely speak of human/Eldar hybrids that were either retconned out or quietly left by the wayside, the change from the silent terminator Necrons to the more personality rich and cultural diverse ones we have now, something something Space Rats, and I know there were a few others thrown my way while I was calling out the Femstodes bs but I can’t recall them at this time. Personally I find the Human/Eldar hybrids idea to be a joke, the now cultural Necrons to make sense, never heard of space rats before this, but again I’m a humble casual who admits not having the context of these changes.

I always liked the assassins although there are so many things I don't know about them, of course I would love to see your approach to the subject, a simple lore video isn't what you do so I would expect some unheard of theory or obscure piece of lore.

The only people the lore is important to are the fans. Said again, the ONLY people the lore is important to is the fanbase. Not the writers or the suits or the shops. If the lore as is moves the merchandise it'll remain consistent. If it doesn't, if the themes of 40k are problematic to market for video games or streaming content or ancillary media, they'll change it. GW doesn't give a shit about your time investment or your affinity for the lore. They'll change the rules and then spin the lore to upcharge existing new models. If people stop buying the models or the book or the games then they'll listen, then they'll cater. Going back to my introduction with Epic and 2nd Edition 40k.. people keep buying the models REGARDLESS OF THE LORE. I was shocked to find 40k is as lucrative as it in an age of online everything. No way I would have bet that the tabletop would still be going in the 2020s, even the pandemic couldn't kill it. They still have their consumer base by the balls. It doesn't matter how accurate the argument is or how much history about the lore any of us know, they'll change whatever they need to if it improves the margins. I think videos like this are more likely to be misconstrued than to be heeded. The issue isn't a select few individuals who want to pander to a certain demographic. The issue is the strictly financial, and flows from the top, the power to influence the lore is directly linkes to people's wallets. I love watching TH-cam to catch up on 40k lore because I don't have to give GW a dime. They got Primarchs coming back to life at a time when they're wrapping the original Horus Heresy to slowly unfurl a new one that'll follow all the same story. They're going to spend another 30 years telling the same story and nothing will advance or change other than the flavors of Marine. Female Custodies will be like record temperatures of today. In about 10 years you'll be wishing for them. The lore is not sacred to GamesWorkshop, they're not in the lore business. And if they believe they can replace disgruntled fans with new ones then expect more changes, especially if a show is a released. Get ready for Imperial romance and "love conquers all" stories.

Great video by the way with an important point. If anything can happen in your universe which breaks the internal logic of said universe, then nothing matters.
All the "Give me that kind of character" and "Give them that kind of power" is the expression of utter entitlement and total lack of awareness of what it takes for worldbuilding. I started to write my own story, because I kept hearing of bad written scripts for TV and cinema. At first I thought, this can't be that difficult... liitle did I know. It was easy to spot the contradictions and inaedequacies in other people's work, but to my own I was blind. Because of that I despise the respectless interpretations of established brands for the sake of pleasing the so called "modern audiences". If they really feel the need for something new they should create their own brand and not pirate and change established franchises. That is just lazy. And they wonder why the backlash? No one wants lazy people to earn a ton of money, only because their product belongs to a popular brand.

-They have never been mentioned (the casual mentions of men & woman in gold armor are the SoS, not Custodes)
-The Emperor didn't want trans humans to supplant humanity (so female trans humans make no sense, its also why the Custodes & Marines are sterile)
-It ruins the dynamic of the talons of the emperor (men and woman working together to become a stronger whole)
-Amazon wanted to check boxes.
-Retcons usually come with models.
-The real world argument: Custodes are the elite of the elite, and the SAS (one of the most elite Fighting Forces we know of) have very few men pass the tests and no woman EVER has.

Custodes aren't Astartes, but they are related. Primarchs, Custodes, Astartes were made from the Emperor's DNA. If one can't have a female, that's enough to say all can't.
Imagine if this was a World War 2 game, and tanks and trucks had both engines. Initially it would be stated that tanks need oil, but later that trucks could run on water. Army trucks always ran on water in their combustion engines. Even if a truck that ran on water would be a revolutionary scientific breakthrough.

i am new to 40K started getting into it about a year ago, i was attracted to it because of its grimdark universe, the oppressive brutal nature of it, and the stories of triumph and sacrifice. then all this shit started happening, and i worry about its future, which is very unfortunate, because 40K is amazing. Its so rich with story, its a shame to ruin the entire flavour of the universe because some people there are clearly self righteous, and narcissistic are more compelled to inject their personal world beliefs onto a pre established franchise. it reeks of slaanesh.

I'm an old 40k fan (2nd to 4th edition) but grew into other things, the importance of lore is necessary. Idiots see it as a restrictive thing rather than guide lines or boundaries to be creative, which is where the biggest creative process occurs is when you are limited. It forces you to think and overcome.
I used to be a Mass Effect fan until Bioware and their ilk shit the bed. Funny how you mentioned Space Dock, I had to correct him on how a Mass Relay worked, I was told I was wrong. I literally copied word for word from the codex entry about how a Relay worked. Apparently I was still wrong and called 'one of those fans'. Its funny how we get called toxic for wanting to adhere to rules of the universe but those who make up their own head canon get offended when you dare question their insane inserts.

A really solid video, Pontius, agree with most of the points made, apart from the argument in that Kesh couldn't have teleported the cyclonic charge - she DID have the codes from void shields, and still doubts that the bomb will teleport. This doesn't make it any more retarded though, since it seems only Custodes have access to such codes, and unless we assume someone could've somehow extracted them from the mind of one of the custodians, which is a feat in and of itself, the only ones who could destroy the Palace that way... are Adeptus Custodes themselves, who are stated to be absolutely incorruptible.
It is very wishful thinking that:
1) When she was chosen for the blood games, all her authorities and access codes of anything weren't revoked immediately so she could impersonate a common enemy of the imperium.
2) That anybody could ever turn off the void shields of the imperial palace from outside of the imperial palace.
3) That all custodians wouldn't be monitoring who is using access codes to try and turn off the shielding of the throne room.

AMA question, what is your opinion about fleshing out the Tyranids? Not in a "here is another bioform" sense, but fleshing out the inner working of each bioform's thought processes and the vision and beliefs of the Hivemind itself? I tend to hate the trendy channels. I look forward to when they die. Especially when their videos aren't constructive. There are a few where the only videos I see are them cutting into the lore, the models, or the boxes. No context and no real love for the hobby. I like how you said all your points and I appreciate the holding of the line to keep the hobby fun and keep 40k enjoyable.

See, it's worse than you think. The Primaris mistake is neither within the acceptable limits nor in the understandable or logical ones, because of this quote that all of 40k is based on: "Forget progress. In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war".
All of 40k's sins can be attributed to one single character: Belisarius *spits* Cawl. Everything else dances to the tune of that addition. It got "added" to the lore like a hammer that added" itself to a stick: IT FUCKING BROKE IT.

40K is fantastic on a level of concepts, ideas and philosophy standing behind it. Actual stories are not written well and more precise, concrete events often feel lackluster. I despise changing the universe based on anything related to real life, it's not something that should be happening, but in case of female custodians, I don't really think it's that bad of a change. It causes eyeroll because motivation between such a change is obvious, connected to pushing agenda, and you see the same thing on minis done recently by GW.
Overly ugly and fat female models for Sigmar, cadian heads, marine artworks and even animation with salamander guy being black/asian, etc. There is nothing wrong in making a bunch of black heads for marines and guardsman, more variety in bits the better, and for example, my catachan army had basically all possible skintones to make it look visually interesting done on like 15 years old kit of minis with standard potato heads, however the motivation between forcing this type of things recently is again obvious and ideologically motivated.
Female custodians are not a problem, because if any type of imperial soldier could be male or female, that would be custodians, they were hand crafted by the emperor himself after all in the better age of technology, keeping higher levels of tech from better times. Primaris were far more bullshit and offtone, I don't care about logic of insetting actions here, what I care about is the atmosphere. Primaris just sh!tted on what the imperium is, with it's lack of innovation, being stubbornly stuck in the past and closedness, there SHOULD NOT be an innovation like that. Especially when a random mechanicus dude apparently "surpassed" the Empror himself with his genetical creations which is a total BS. Female custodians DO NOT change VIBES and motives of the imperium, because Custodians were a bunch of solo "hero" type of characters, where gender doesn't really matter, and where from logical point of view their creation is still more probable than creation of space marines.
What IS WRONG about female custodies are motivations behind adding them. Same like with those ethnic head bits I've mentioned, it's not a problem about getting some new stuff noone cares to much about, it's a problem about OPENING THE GATE to the agenda which is going to destroy the franchise, just like it destroyed settings like Star Wars or Star Trek or Dr Who. It's about this awful narcissistic enforcing what YOU personally like IRL as this social justice type on a setting where it does NOT BELONG to. What gender? What race? What oppennes? In 40k you are MEAT to be thrown into indurstrial or war meatgrinder, a resource to be used, there is no place for such laughable bullcrap terms, because 40k is all about YOU AS A PERSON being NOTHING. It's wrong, because it destroys this atmosphere like a cancer - slowly, step by step, even though at the begining, changes doesn't seem to be that bad.
And because current changes that herald future swamp they are going to make out of the setting, looking from the side on all this female custodian drama, it looks like a hysterical unresonable reaction from the side of 40k fans. It is NOT, however it's hard to put into words and youtubers do a bad job explaning the fenomenon - because it's not about logic, it's about vibes and atmosphere of the franchise, which is harder to grasp and where it's harder to convince someone about it, especially someone not knowledgable on the setting itself.
They're not space marines, they don't need to be compatible to a geneseed or such.
As far as the lore goes they're flesh golems personally moulded from childhood to be the ultimate guardians.
They are guardians. That's all they are.
Space marines are roided out warmachines churned out and indocrinated into servitude to kill the foes of the imperium.
They are the idealized picture of war that a misguided little boy influenced by propaganda movies might hope to be when they grow up, not knowing the horrors of war.
The custodes don't really have such a theme that'd box them in as the space marines have.

Also, you might include Indomitus 40K but but he's more into "I change the narrator of *this* book(s) so I can somehow read the almost full story without problem, and still be enjoyable enough for TH-cam and Legal"
