      The human eye can see and identify shapes accurately in contrast (black on white, white on black) when only shown the image for 1/600 second.
      Our eyes are not camera's and cannot be compared to a camera , we don't see in megga pixels , we don't have shutter speeds, we see a constant stream of information and our brains interpret what is important enough for us to see or ignore.@@leandrofod

      @JCTiggs1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Isn't this still dependent on the in-game fps? For example, if someone has a 1440p triple monitor setup and only gets 70 fps due to the GPU driving 11million pixels/sec, would a 144hz monitor be noticeable?

    • @jdcasanasr
      @jdcasanasr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I just find this "moving windows/mouse feels smoother" a bit funny. I mean, come on, we don't buy these kinds of monitors to do office work or move the coursor on the Windows desktooñp. No offense, but this kind of comments are completely irrelevant.

      Reggie Beats I think he’s saying he would be so used to 144 that 60 would start looking choppy when that’s all he can get.
      Personally I never had that problem. I always play on my 144hz on competitive games and on my 4K 60hz on singleplayer games. 60 to 144 is not as big as a leap going from 30 to 60. I even once in a while play gta on PS4 with my friends and it doesn’t take long for my eyes to adjust to the 30 fps.

    Honestly, I just put it down to this. 60 is fine for most stuff. 144 is a very nice step up. 240 is also a step up, but not near as big a step as 60 to 144 was. Though 240 is better than 144. It’s like 60 is a 6/10. 144 is a 9/10, and 240 is a 10/10

    • @Pipsispite
      @Pipsispite 5 ปีที่แล้ว +546

      Jeto you don’t. Even if you aren’t able to maintain it, it still updates faster. If you are only hitting around 90 FPS Mark of course you won’t get the 144hz but what will happen is you won’t have to wait 16ms for a new frame to appear. So even without a constant 144 FPS you still see new frames faster.

      @Ddog Kbone why don't you read about low framerate compensation (LFC). This is how both Freesync and G-Sync handle framerate below the native refresh rate of a monitor. So basically the refresh rate is doubled or tripled when it is too low for the monitor. This way they can handle framerate far below the native refresh of the display.

    I think frame time consistency is much more important than maximum frame rate (even with adaptive sync technology) e.g. I have a 240hz monitor but in many games I'd rather have a consistent 120hz than a 240hz experience that fluctuates.

      You are so absolutely right, John!
      Also ... internal world update tick-rates (may since the 1990ths (1)) have nothing to do with the display loop. The monitor refresh rates presented here and with them the benefits of them look more like a wet dream of two marketing guys(3). One from the GPU industry and the other from the helpless "AAA" gaming title factory who successfully scams their customers since years, now(2).
      (1) That is of course not true, if you are using DOOM as your game engine, heheheh
      (2) The latter one has his head in the backside of the GPU guy. Impossible to produce a good game, just Gfx and BS:)
      (3) Instead you are a housefly, with the brain of her ... or you simply can't come up with the reaction times needed for such equipment.
      addendum to (3): No, marketing mumbo jumbo like "muscle memory" or "out of eye sight" won't change how the human biology works. They just change your willpower and the content of your wallet:)
      Of course the quarterly numbers of GPU/Monitor manufacturers CAN hold up with the reciprocal value of the stupidity of their customers ... in Hertz!;)
      P.S.: Just have a look at the thumbnail of this video. Artist impression ... sure. But by one with the lack of ALL basic principles of photography, like shutter speed and exposure time. And the use of two different(the content!) frames to compare "inequality" (let's better say ... also the lack of PHOTOSHOP skills) is stand up comedian material at it's best:))))

    Actually, the reason to get a very high refresh rate monitor is to run games with vsync turned off. It allows better framerates under a heavy GPU load--in other words, your minimum framerate will be much better with vsync off, but when the framerate goes much higher than a normal monitor (usually about 60 Hz) you won't get tearing.

      BTW is this another non evidential, sponsored by "feelings" and anecdotal evidence, BS post? Since the times of machines like C64, CRTs and Oscilloscopes the SYNC-Signal is THE facility that prevents TEARING. If, like you state, your wrongly dimensioned GPU is the reason for tearing then you get OUT-OF-SYNC tearing if you switch VSYNC off(1). But thank you. For most of us watching on a 60htz monitor, (because 144 is impossible to see in real-time unless you have a 144 monitor) I think the best way to explain it is to compare 30fps to 60fps. To my eyes that's what the difference between 60 to 144 looks like. It does make a difference, not huge, but enough to make the immersion a little more realistic because at 60fps you are essentially seeing very fast microstutter, and it's something you really don't notice consciously until you see the 144.

    Contrary to popular belief, 16.6ms to 6.9ms reduction in frame time doesn't effect your reaction time at all. Even the best pro gamers have reaction times 10x that number. What actually helps you is motion vision. Our eyes is very good at picking up changes in vision. 144hz more than doubles the number of changes of 60hz. It triggers more signals for your brain to react. That's why people generally have better reaction times in 144hz than in 60hz. That improvement in reaction time is about 100ms which is still 10 times the reduction in frame time(16.6 - 6.9).

    it's also good to note that going above your monitors re-fresh rate gives you a buffer, meaning that %1 and %0.1 lows don't dip below 144hz compared to say v-sync. put it this way... 180fps on a 144hz monitor actually feels smoother and has less latency then 144fps on a 144hz monitor... this is why people tell you to turn v-sync off. I personally find the best practice is to cap your framerate %20 above that of your refresh rate. even if your average framerate is 143fps %1 and %0.1 lows are always lower if even slightly. during that time even if it were 100ms where it dips to an average of 120fps. you can still feel it. this happens regardless of your hardware and how powerful it is.

Got a monitor that has freesync that is compatible with Gsync and with the right configurations the result is so much better that a 60hz monitor.

      @@perrylenpunsalan3846 60 and above 60 got a little difference in normal circumstances, that's why you hardly could tell the difference.
      Then what's the advantage of 144 over 60?
      When a game is in chaotic states (a lot of object, effects, etc are all render in your screen at once), you can rest easy because your game is still running smoothly because it's still above or at least 60fps
      If you barely got 60fps and your game enter the chaotic states, you will feel the Lag because the fps will dramatically drop a lot.
      That's also why the Pc mAsTEr rAcE always mention 60fps not 144fps. Because the lowest standard for a smooth graphics are 60fps not 144fps or even 200s fps.

    You're getting FPS and refresh rate mixed up, and making it very confusing. Tearing is due to the GPU at low FPS, despite the refresh rate, the monitor will display ghosting @ a lower refresh rates, 'Hz' If the FPS and refresh rate are out of sync then you'll get poor visuals, Even if your GPU is displaying @ 240fps and your monitor @ 60Hz you'll get ghosting, not tearing or stuttering, A monitor @ 240Hz at 30FPS will look shite with tearing and stuttering but at least no ghosting. 60fps @ 60Hz will look OK but might not be in sync. Lets not also forget, 1Hz is 1 cycle, On-off-on, so 60Hz is effectively and comparatively, 30fps. this is why you need a 120Hz monitor, most GPUs and games play @ 60fps so the monitor at 120Hz and a GPU @ 60fps plays on the monitor perfectly, 240Hz and above is only really useful for fast 1st person shooters that you want the FPS as fast as possible, 120fps and above on a 240Hz monitor would look good. the refresh rate needs to be 2x the FPS. If your games are consistently at 60FPS then a 120Hx refresh rate monitor is ample. and if the game displays slightly more say at 70FPS then maybe set the in-game FPS limit to 60, if the game displays consistently @ 120FPS then a 240Hz monitor might be beneficial.

A high refresh rate monitor is purely for gaming as far as my uses would go. I’m getting a laptop with a 3070, 1600p 165hz panel so it kinda has best of both worlds and I can’t wait to try it out.

      Playing 60 fps (heaviest games) on a 144hz panel is good, playing 1080p on a 1440p (in case the game gets too heavy for 60 fps 1440p) is not that good for what I've heard (never tested it myself tho)

      1660 TI can do 1440p at around 60+ FPS in most games but I would go for higher refresh rate plus in most cases having a higher refresh rate is more immersive then having a sharper image plus you might not be even able to tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p (this depends on how far away you are from the screen)

  • @tomlin9539

    The experience regards to the refresh rate and resolution really depends on the biological limitation of each individual.
    As those goes higher and higher, the improvements regards to experience diminishes, and possibly only a small group of people with extremely good eyes and reflexes can tell the difference.
    As of now, I feel 2K 144Hz is a sweet spot. You have enough resolution for details and enough refresh rate for motion. Which is kind of like a balance between the resolution and refresh rate.
    Otherwise going to 4K means you are most likely gonna stick with 60Hz. Or going to 240Hz means you likely gonna stick with 1080p resolution.
    It really comes down to Smoothness Vs. Details.

    As an old school tech who knows what he is talking about this review is flawed. The reason the 60hz monitor is looking so horrible is because there was no vsync activated causing massive screen tearing. You can see a horizontal like running across the middle of the screen from left to right of the monitor that rips the scene in half. On the other hand the other monitor doesnt have a vsync problem because either vsync is enabled or screen tear is not as bad because of the faster refresh rate.

    Totally, totally agree! Went from a 144 Hz 27" monitor to a beautiful Freesync 32" VA @ 70 Hz. Loved the picture quality and Freesync worked well but I just couldn't live without the higher refresh rate. Just bought an Acer 27" 240Hz GSync monitor and it's going from a 1971 Ford Pinto to a 2019 Ferrari! I can never go back.

    I got a Razer Blade 15 it has a 144Hz screen and it's night and day difference from 60Hz. (This is in games and just doing normal stuff on Windows) It spoils you, can't go back to 60Hz now again in FPS games. Now for some games 60Hz is fine but yeah highly recommended and it's worth the extra money. I've tried a 240Hz monitor and personally 240Hz is only marginally more responsive like it's so slight but it is there. Smoothness feels very very similar though I'd say to 144Hz. Even if you aren't a "hardcore" gamer and are causal 144Hz is still so much better compared to 60Hz and you'll love it.

      I've considered 240 Hz monitor, but I'm too afraid that 4k 120 Hz TV for less competive games would feel too stuttery after that. I guess I should stick with 144 Hz FeelsBadman.
