You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned not being bored with the PDK. The PDK is the only auto I’ve ever been entirely connected to, and I’ve driven manuals my whole life. It is not boring whatsoever. It’s so smart when you’re driving hard & never done anything I didn’t want it to. Also, driving with the paddles is quite entertaining. Also, I don’t know any other flat-4 that sounds like this one with the Sports Exhaust, it sounds very good & not like a Subaru at all.

Nice review and glad you enjoy the PDK. What I have now realised having owned 981 and upgraded it with Porsche options such as X73 suspension it’s all about the spec determines how quick it is particularly around a track. So you can make your Porsche out perform those hot hatches if you want.

    • @capuchinseven

With a quick look at Fastest Lap shows the Golf R can't keep up with even a base 718 on pretty much most/all tracks, let alone something like a 718 T with PASM/LSD/Vectoring. In fact most hatches struggle to keep up in lap times with a 718.

  • @capuchinseven

Hey, the Sports Chrono Sports Response button doesn't give extra boost, it takes whatever mode you're in and gives you maximum throttle response and with the PDK give you the fastest gear change while also putting you right in the rev range that you'd need for over taking; it doesn't add any extra power or boost.

Nice spec, I had the 981 Cayman S in the same colour, LOVED the car, have to say if I went back to a Cayman I'd go back to the 981 purely for the sound of it which is just another level.

    Nice video and informative thanks.
I bought a BMW coupe because of its looks, it looked great to me. However, the ride quality was shockingly bad unless you were on brand new tarmac, the manual box wasn’t good when taking off in first or in traffic, the coil packs failed, something else, a sensor, failed causing a stack up with the dealer ‘we’re not BMW, we’re a franchise so we’re not responsible’. Oh yeah I said, what are those three great big letters over your door saying, because I reckon it says BMW!
In the end they paid half and made me feel grateful as they weren’t obliged to pay anything. (Even though the failures on my car were being commonly reported and obviously a manufacturing/design issue that shouldn’t have been sold to me.
Then the front near side coil spring broke at 20,000 miles. The garage said they’d replace it for £300. I said, surely they should be fitted in pairs? Groan, alright but it’ll cost you, attitude.
That was me done with BMW. I was tempted with a new M240i at one stage but didn’t like the small tank and fuel range and had promised myself not to go back to BMW or ever buy another car just because I loved the look of it.
I got rid off the BM and got a new VW Golf Gti pp 7.5. Dual clutch. Dcc etc
It looks good, does everything I want, is faster than the BM, much more economical and is great to drive and didn’t cost a fortune. I’d say it’s the best car I’ve ever owned, not the most prestigious but the best nonetheless.
Here’s the problem, I’ve had the Gti for 3 years, didn’t like the new golf 8 and decided not to change.
Then I saw a gorgeous Cayman S, oh look at that, that’s what I’ve been looking for 😀
Hmm, I would have gone for a manual Cayman s but Porsche have admitted that the gearing in the Cayman models is far too long, to the point of being ridiculous. They knew that when they made and sold the cars.
Ok I’ll go with the PDK, but I’m feeling like ‘who are these Porsche people?’, if they’re happy to put an inappropriate gearbox in what should be a sports car and just let the customer get on with it, 105 mph in third, what else have they done or are doing to get away with ‘bodging’ their Caymans up.
I’ve seen video reviews suggesting the seats are very uncomfortable and real back breakers after 45 miles and evidence of faults appearing in the car only to be told ‘it’s normal’ by the Porsche dealer.
The cost of options is extortionate, the cost of parts and repairs, dropping the engine just to change the oil, is also off putting and yes I could afford it, but I’d rather do something else with my money than pour it into Porsche’s pockets for nothing.
But I’m stuck with the ‘ I love the look and layout of the Cayman, it’s a natural progression for me’ or is it a huge money pit laying in wait for a sucker.
While I’m making my mind up I’ll happily zoom around in my Gti and hopefully not see another Cayman soon 😱

    • @LifeInMotionuk
      @LifeInMotionuk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the comment! Your BMW experience sounded awful! I’m glad the GTi has been a great car for you. I was only considering the PDK for my Porsche so I didn’t experience the manual. I must admit I have had a few comments of “oh that’s normal with Porsche” and so have let some stuff go. On the flip side, I’ve had the car nearly 3 years and have only had to change the tyres and had some minor work done to unblock a fan…I always believe with cars if you can get a car out of your head for a week, go and check it out - if it’s still on the mind then take one for a drive and see what happens ;)

The 4 cyl is great with the manual. I keep it above the turbo threshold (which people on TH-cam usually mistake as ‘turbo lag’. It’s not. It’s just the RPM under which there’s little boost. Once in the zone, the turbo is fantastic). Or leave the PDK in manual mode! 😉

Honestly (and please note that this has nothing to do with your review which was very good) but interior sucks (feels like being in 2010), every single damn thing is an absurd expensive option, visibility is bad, quality is actually poor for luxury brand
so it has a wild engine, great... but i would pay shitloads of co2 taxes
I chose a bmw 4 coupé, sorry, but like what a difference, quality comfort luxury and costs less compared to the options I have (almost all)

With too many options you’re kicking up the price up to a very expensive car for a four cylinder! It doesn’t sound any better than any other cheap 4 cylinder car. So it’s all about handling and appearance. Miata is the answer if you want an affordable easy to maintain fun sports car. Of course if you get one 6-10 years old than maybe you’re getting a decent price. After warranty expires good luck! You must have a great income to fix it and get maintenance.

I have a 2014 Boxster S, purchased to order in late 2013. This is my first Porsche. I have had two issues with the car, 1) the door panels where you would rest your arm started to separate, rise up. Seems to be a some what common problem with Porsche. The car was out of warranty when I brought it to my local Porsche dealer. I was quoted about $7200 to replace both door panels. Porsche was going to pay for half $3100. That left me with a $3100 bill. I was shocked that door panels would fail, as this car is garaged all the time. I believed this was a quality problem from Porsche. The car is a daily driver, nearing 45k at the time of the problem. I now have 77K. Yes I drive it. Finally the dealer paid for the repair. Whew! 2) My radiator cap failed and dumped all my antifreeze . Replaced the cap with a new one, refilled and good to go. Those are the only two problems with my Boxster. Compared to all 5 BMWs I owned previously , this one is a keeper. The BMWs were always breaking down. I’m looking to purchase my 2d Porsche next year. I hope I get a keeper like this one. Porsche drive like no other.

@@philipjc1 - Yep those door panels are a common problem. My friend has a 2014 Boxster S with the same issue. It bout of warranty and he found a guy in Tampa to replace and fix for a very reasonable price. The previous owner kept it garaged and was OCD! It only had 9,000 miles after 7 years of ownership. He got it about 6 months ago. It’s mint! Silver exterior. Very nice car.
