      Imagine telling people don’t do whatever is causing an issue because they are wrong and cars that are cheaper don’t do this. Don’t be a fan boy. You’re sounding like a Tesla owner. If they didn’t want you shifting into first gear while moving they could easily tune the trans to not let you do that. It’s literally that simple. They didn’t so that should tell you something.

    • @rkw3000
      @rkw3000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Usually there's no first gear synchro, so you just need to rev it up a little to slip it into first smoothly. But on the PDK thats a different story.

    1. 2:40 the "OFf" display in the climiate control IMO is a non-issue
    2. 3:55 clunky first gear downshift on PDK, is a legit concern, not a big problem though, could get the stick
    3. 5:34 Ride quality can be improved with PASM, 18" wheels, and the 2-way sport plus or 18-way sport plus seats
    4. 7:19 Grey rev counter is terrible and can't be scene, get it in a different color, black is the best for visibility, grey is the worst. I prefer the yellow
    5. 9:10 - yep never get the 14-way seats, he 2-way / 18-way sport plus seats have more padding. If I see a used 718 with the 14-way seats I look away

    My guess as to the reason why the "OFf" display in the climate control is the way it is, is that the last digit "f" is responsive to the temperature when the A/C is on, for example, "79f" or "26c" as in "Fahrenheit" and "Celsius". I guess Porsche thought it would look even weirder if the degree type was a capital letter, for example, "79F". I'm wondering what would display if the weather were over 100F (37C).

  • @robloeray6607

    The 2nd F doubles as Farenheight. So when the ac is on you’ll see 72F

    I drove from Annapolis MD to The Gulf Coast of Alabama when I purchased my 718. A trip of about 1100 + miles. I also have the 14 way seats and experienced zero issues with them. My previous P car was a 2008 Cayman S and drove it thousands of miles without any comfort issues.
    I am 5’-10 158 lbs , so again, maybe it is a body type issue.

    Heads up if you haven’t experienced it yet: in cold weather, if you make a sharp turn starting from standstill, you will feel it “hopping”. This is also completely normal for Porsche. It’s the Ackerman effect.

You can change the wheels to 18” wheels and you’ll se a huge difference from the 20” wheels. My friend got 18” Boxster rims from EBay :for his Boxster because he hated the ride with the 20” ones.

    Good video! 718 GTS owner here. Even with manual transmissions, you don't hit first gear until you have stopped because that puts stress on it. Love that you went with the Brimbo red brakes... the step up is an $8600 option which is crazy. I think the S or base model is better as a daily driver than my car. I agree about the seats. They get painful!

  • @rembo183
    @rembo183 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    By the way, I was told this by a driving instructor at the Porsche Driving /Experience Center in Atlanta. I was downshifting to first stopping and he said shift into neutral coast to stop than start in first after stopping. It’s easier on transmission and engine and it’s cheaper to fix brakes than transmission in a Porsche!😊👍🏻. If you can afford a few hundred bucks that Porsche driving school is fantastic! You can pick your car and an instructor drives with you as passenger giving you tips. I picked a similar car you have several years ago- 718 S Boxster. Great car to drive!

      well, I never learn or drive automatic transimmision, and on the older cars I started to drive it was 'forbidden' to use 1st shift to ride except starting movement. so this habbit stays with me and I never use 1st gear to stop. I have brakes for it. so I think the problem with 1rs gear is not in transmission but between seat and steering wheel...

    Does the ride quality have anything to do with the large rims? I have a 718 Cayman with 20 inch rims and I have a feeling that is what is causing the issue with the ride quality. There is not enough tire cushion between the wheel and the road, because of the super low profile tires.

    Picked up my 718 in March and the following week I drove it from Melbourne to Adelaide (Australia), a trip of about 7 hours. Had no problems whatsoever with the standard seats and neither did my wife. However, I am 5’6”, so maybe it comes down to body type. Agree the ride is firm, but that’s the price we pay for the flat cornering. I found road noise an issue, but I’ll learn to live wit that.

    These are all spot on. I have the same spec/color. The OFf is silly. The 2nd to 1st shift definitely has a "clunk". For me, the little cubbies behind the seats take near acrobatic like skills to get into. Also, my auto start/stop seems to always be disabled (which I like), but makes me wonder if a previous owner programed it out. Otherwise its a great car! Great videos!

    I have never thought shifting to 1ST gear was advantageous, if anything, just the opposite. The 981 2015 Cayman I owned was very 'comfy' so can't help you there. The seats were quite firm, but not to their determent. Clear view to the dash gauges, check. I traded for a 911 and of course, their OFF marker on the air conditioning reads like yours OFf and I don't find that a problem at all. I'd bet there is a reason for it, so will keep my eyes open. Good luck...

      @@DriveMore718 you said its when you downshift to first right? When I'm showing down and coasting to a stop I typically put the car in neutral. You can do this by pulling on both paddle shifters at the same time. I'm rarely in first more that a few seconds.

      It’s more of a track thing, if you’re tracking the car and come into a hairpin turn then you usually go into first to keep the power out of the turn. If I put the car in sport + mode it automatically slams it into first even if I’m just driving normal. I’ve had a a lot of people ask me about this but I think it’s people that don’t race the cars or have never driven a Porsche on the track.

    The cause of the display disparity is probably the build of the display itself. Imagine, if you will, construction of the seven-segment display. It's a collection of LED lights; not a pixelated screen. Then, imagine sticking a bunch of those little LED lights that make up the 7 segments of different sizes and shapes in a coordinated, consolidated collection that makes up the entire screen you see with temp, right and left, then the fan speed indicator bars. Each is a single LED, simplifying the overall system complexity. The third digit LED's probably wouldn't fit due to conflicting with other individual lights. Either that, or maybe they're shared with another, unseen in your example, display of other information. Either way, it's the simple build of the component that's causing that issue IMO. Thanks for the tough fought video. Sorry about your phone... Cheers from Charlotte

    As far as im aware All duall clutch transmissions have a clunky first gear..ie-volkswagon/audi/vag,, nissan/gtr, porsche, The only way to too eliminate the lower gear clunk is by shifting with more load on the gears....(j have found if i want too have a clean shift down to first or second by downshifting at either a higher rpm or by braking harder(more load) and that tends too eliminate clunk 100%///or in the cars auto shift mode case it will slow down the gear change(release the clutch slower. (Try understanding that it is 100% just a manual that is automated.) if u shift fast in a manual at a low load its very clunky. But if u shift slow its much smoother

    I own a 718 Cayman since 2019, and I have driven it 25k miles so far. I don’t experience the 1st gear clunk because I have the manual tranny. Your complaint about the ride quality is total BS. This is a sports car, so it is supposed to handle like a sports car. If you want a soft ride, get a Cadillac or a BMW.
    You should have spent more $ to get the seats with extra bolstering on the sides. My seats only have the manual adjustments but they are the most comfortable seats I have ever experienced in my 45 years of driving.

      I totally agreed. He should have got the 6 speed unless he doesn't know how to drive a manual? For a car like to Cayman, I would ALWAY get a manual. As for the rest of his complains, it is all nip picking and doesn't affect what this car is actually build for. Who care if that's a small f. It is a driver's car and that's all you need to know. Take it to the track and this is where the car really shines.

    6:54 PASM doesn't have a softer setting than your car currently has. It has the same setting (but actually harder because the car is lower) and an even stiffer setting. American cars all seem to have squishy suspension compared to European cars, frankly. It's an actual sportscar, you're not meant to be comfortable. Go faster.
