    This is by far the best comprehensive review I have seen on TH-cam. The presenters voice speed and accent are audibly pleasant, the non verbal cues are professional, the knowledge base of the product is exceptional and the emphasis of excitement is timed perfectly. The camera quality is also exceptional and the placement of the camera in driving mode is correct. Other reviewers should study his method of delivery as a standard for car reviews. The base 718 Cayman is my favorite Porsche for real world (USA) driving and represents the purists pursuit of superior engineering and the art of sports car driving. This is my next car. Well done Sir. Subscribed!

    For once a review that isn't based around the lack of flat-six noise. It will be missed, but that's just an amazing car. Huge improvement.

      So true! I think we are in the minority lol I heard it at the dealer with the sport exhaust and it sounded perfect enough for me. If people still want the distinctive sounds of the flat six they have used 2016/2015s GT4 still in great shape so I don't see the point of making reviews with a heavy portion based upon the disappointment of the reviewers about the new 4 cylinder's sound.

    Best review of this car on the internet.
    This is a perfect sports car in my opinion of a sports car.
    It has;
    -Amazing design.
    -Good performance ( accelaraiton, handling, braking )
    -Long-life engine.
    -Daily drive comfort
    -Amazing interior quality
    -Relatively economic fuel consumption
    -Enough storage space
    -Mechanical feel, not robotic.
    -Luxury and prestige.
    -Fair price.
    I really respect Porsche for this masterpiece. For example that little "718" mark behind the shift knob is not a need. But they decided to put it there and it is a nice detail for me.
    This is one of my dream cars. But it seems impossible for me to get one of these for now. Because it is about 130.000 € in my country (which is Turkey that all cars are expensive because of the taxes). Even if I earn money to afford 130k €, I am not sure this car worths that much money when other people all around the world have chance to buy it with less than half price.
    I think I am in love with this car that i wrote almost a story . :) Hope to get my dreams at a young age. Also hope for you. :)

    Great review, thanks Thomas. I recently bought a loaded up 718 base Cayman having been influenced heavily by your review. I previously owned a 2013 Boxster base for 6 years so I am very familiar with the platform. My first drive was a 900 km (yes it was that far, I live in Canada) run through the mountains to my home from the dealership. As was the Boxster, this is a great drivers car and I have no real complaints about the flat 6 vs the new flat 4 except for a bit gruffness and slight turbo lag. Neither is a deal breaker. A complaint that I do have and that didn't reveal itself in a test drive is that the car produces a noticeable low frequency vibration from the firewall that increases with the use of the sport exhaust. After about an hour the sound became annoying and after several hours I developed a headache. The noise can be lessened by turning off the sport exhaust but still remains annoying. By the time I got home after 10 hours driving I was ready to sell the car. I did some research and found out something I never expected from Porsche. Inside the trunk is a "Soundaktor" unit. For those unfamiliar with these it consists of an electronic actuator that pipes sound from the engine to the firewall and uses the firewall as a resonator to "accentuate" the exhaust sound. I knew that automotive manufacturers used these in lower end cars but never expected to find one in a Porsche. I was always under the impression that Porsche used superior German engineering to produce pleasing exhaust notes and not fake electronic noise. It's blasphemy. Anyway, I found the circuit that powers the Soundoktor and disabled it by removing the fuse. To my ear there is a huge improvement in exhaust sound. It now sounds like the exhaust note is coming from the rear of the car, where it should be, instead of over your right shoulder and the annoying low frequency vibration is gone. Something to be aware of for anyone thinking about buying one of these.

    • @jonathanl2748
      @jonathanl2748 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I cannot believe that Porsche uses fake sounds in any car they produce. Much like Mercedes and their fake exhaust tips. I’m currently specing a Cayman and one of the first things I will do upon delivery will be to remove the same fuse.

  • @maestrovso
    @maestrovso 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Autogefühl. I have watched just about every videos there are on the 718 Caymans, 981 Caymans, and the GT4. My biggest difficulty as with most Porsche lovers, is the 4-cylinder engine’s lower tone pitch with respect to the 6-cylinder. As you I found the new cars are in every way better, from performance, to aesthetics, to comfort and user friendliness. Of course the 4-cylinder engine cannot sound the same as the 6. You are by far the best reviewer that details the subtle enhancements that few other mention (e.g. the very refined air vents). I think your review is on the whole very objective, logical, and with regard to emotions, and especially driving engagement. Most important you are one of the very few today test drive ones with manual gearbox.
    I have explored buying a lightly used 981 Cayman S, GTS, and even a GT4, but more and more, I am leaning towards order a new 718 to my specific options and color.
    A fine point. One can assess the engine under the interior cover for most minor maintenance like adding oil, changing filter, and may be changing the sparkplugs.
    Keep up the good work.

    What a great and professional review! Thanks! I have been thinking about buying my first real sports car (it's about time, I'm 53) the coming year and this excellent review convinced me that the Cayman S probably is the car I will go for. For long I was locked on the much more expensive 911, but now I have reconsidered. And..what funny coincidence...the highway/motorway scenes (just before the Sturup Raceway scenes) was fimed just near by where I live :)

    Great review Thomas! I personally really like the shape or the Cayman - with the mid engine variant. I have always found the 911 to have a bit of a hunchback with the engine back there.... (Although I would not refuse a 911 Carrera 4 GTS - if someone wanted to give me one) The additional storage is very handy. That color is nice, but the Miami Blue really 'pops" Thx and keep up the good work - Loyal subscriber here...

    Brilliant review Thomas. You covered everything that matters to me; comfort, luggage space, and practicality.
    Most Porsche reviews concentrate on its on-track performance and while that is important in a Porsche, the reality is that most people never take their car anywhere near a racetrack.
    For me, everyday drivability is one of the most important things. I typically drive 45-50,000km per year so my car needs to be comfortable but also able to put a smile on my face. The 718 Cayman would most certainly do that for me. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

    Yeah the new flat 4 has kind of an "errrrrrrr" whereas the flat 6 had more of an "aaaah" or a "waaaaah".
    They'll probably improve the sound eventually, because there are a lot better sounding four bangers, kind of an exhaust note rough draft.
    And don't buy one in a right hand drive country, the intake is on the left side only, meaning less intake noise.

Everything is so tight and well engineered. The balance and handling of my car, with the 20 inch wheels is just amazing. I also have a 1989 911 Carrera which is so raw compared to the Cayman. Both beautiful cars.

    Great review as always. Love this car, thinking on buying one, still having second thoughts on the color combo though.
    I love the red interior, which exterior color do you think would go best with it on this car?
    My first choice would be white exterior, but I'm starting to think that white is becoming too common, so I'd like to consider other colors, like this blueish gray we see on your review, it looks awesome, think it would be a good combo with red interior?
    Keep up with your great reviews Thomas!

      I would stick with the standard interior as it seems you dont get any animal skin then - and it's the cheapest and already with great quality. Colours available for the standard trim seem to be black, beige and grey. That beige interior is kickass, however it seems the dashboard is also beige then and that causes some reflections

    I actually like the sound on start up. I've had one for 8 months and it's a joy. The performance is insane and you can see why Porsche had to hold back the Cayman cos it would smoke a 911 if they unleashed its full potential. And just look at it, inside and out it's stunning

    *Here is constructive argument (opinion)on why this does not sound like Subaru (or any other japan cars, you should be smacked for even comparing them, different beasts), not here to argue how "good" it sounds tho* but gotta say the car sounds like the best stock 4 cyl ive ever heard aside from alfa.
    ----Lets talk about 3 elements of sound. *Rhythm* (in this case we will use the engine's sound pattern), *tempo* (in this case we will use how fast it revs to high revs), and *pitch or note* i guess
    1: pattern- is still porsche. The rhythm of the engine is the same (very noticeable in high revs, in low revs harder to hear but ill explain later)
    2: tempo - basically revs to higher end about same speed as previous gen.
    3: Pitch/note- It is *lower* and that is one of the most notable thing our ear picks up. IT SOUNDS LOWER PITCHED. is that *bad?* personally i say its just different. If you dislike this specific note, then you must hate a lot of cars with low pitches like AMG, and muscle cars :(
    All of these elements *do not sound like subaru* BUTTT
    *NOW HERE ARE THINGS THAT U HEAR THAT MIGHT BE WHY YOU THINK THIS SOUNDS LIKE SUBARU*
    1. the initial patterns are not quite the same: There are some air blowing like noise in the very first few revs. If that matters *THAT* much to you then dont get this car and continue to bash on it as it rightfully deserves your bashing in this case.
    2. the totality of the Volume is reduced. It is also a natural occurrence because we naturally thing higher pitch things are louder, when it really isnt. It just kinda shocks your ears more. kinda like how spicy tastes nice but its a sensation of pain.
    personally i think this car is quite nice. *i wont say this is better sounding than flat 6, but it is simply different* WOULD be nice if its louder tho but keep in mind these are videos. Mics also do not pick up lower pitched things too well (depending on brand). I checked it out irl the other day, sounds damn damn loud.

    Nicely done, Thomas. Those non-leather seats are great, just what I would order. I'm assuming the doors dash and console still have the stitched leather, or is that also faux leather?

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thanks! Good question, I was thinking about that myself as well. Dashboard and inside of the doors are usually more leatherette than anything else, even in the Mercedes S-Class, as it is more durable. Not sure in this case, let me scroll some price lists and configurators ... ;)

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really hard to find out. My current guess is that in the standard trim, it is faux leather and if you go for some higher spec animal skin seats, that will also put it on the dashboard. That's what I take from the configurator descriptions

    • @astrogen1960
      @astrogen1960 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I did the same thing. I couldn't tell from the written description when I selected the Sport-Tex Seats, but the image on the doors changed to having aluminum trim and stitching. I think it upgrades to leather on the surrounding surfaces when choosing the Sport-Tex. Looking at your excellent HD close-ups, I'm inclined to think this is the case. Maybe in the future they'll offer the full faux interior, but for now, the Sport-Tex Seats are a step in the right direction. Thank you.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes exactly. Best is standard trim with alcantara/faux leather where you should also have the faux dashboard then - and save some money :)
      Dont understand why the cloth is more expensive than the alcantara as well

      I don't agree on the sound thing, and I think you are all in denial. Yes they don't sound as good anymore. But the major stigma around these cars were how slow they were. Yes they handled well, but they were slow. And I highly doubt any of you would gladly lose a race against something as mass produced as say an Audi s3, and tell yourself shortly afterward that "it's OK that I lost to a car worth $40k less than mine because it sounds better."
      That's utter rubbish.

      Gabatron...Who buys a Boxster to drag race? The Boxster is one of the best handling cars money can by. If you want to crush an S3 buy a 32k Mustang GT. There will always be a faster car than yours. There is no car you can buy in America that handles better than the Boxster. I am not talking about the numbers. Feel and precision it is at the top. That H6 was at the top for feel and precision also. The new 4 has more power but a bit of that sweetness has been lost.

    After having owned several of the following Porsches; including 356, 356S90, 914 2.0, 944, 911's, and now the 718 Cayman "Base" Model with PDK, I can honestly say this is truly the most refined and exciting Porsche to drive, both on the motorway, track, and as a daily driver. Get over the "sound" and focus on the driving experience, which is truly exceptional. I enjoyed this review as well as the one for the Boxster S and believe that there is a true representation of the car's capabilities. I can tell you first hand that the "suggested" acceleration times are higher than I have had experience with in track timings.

More or less the same configuration as the Graphite Blue model in your review, but with PDK and a few more options like the sports exhaust, sports mode, Apple Carplay etc. And in gorgeous Lava Orange...

      Jano, I just had a look at your liked and favorite videos. After seeing what your taste in videos is, how can anyone take you comments seriously? I agree that the 718 doesn't sound as good as the previous engine, but by no means does the new engine sound crap - and in both versions, it puts out serious horsepower.
      If you think it sounds like a diesel BMW, I suggest you buy the BMW. A Porsche would be wasted on you.

    • @janogueify
      @janogueify 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ron Gambol I haven't liked any videos since decades ago, because basically I only want to se videos, and I don't no in what what kind of way the videos that I liked make that much influence in how seriously my comments should be taked with, but any way, that was just my personal opinion, yes I think that a bmw one series with a tunned exhaust sounds as much as good and I also think that such a small engine that produces 300 HP is going to have durability issues, but again that's just my personal opinion and probably I'm not correct. And I'm sorry if my comment had ofended you, seriously, I didn't mean to.
