  • I didn't say it/show it in the video, but I should have. Tuned this way with a safe tune in the wood, will still hit the limiter with no load out of the wood. Just an fyi.
Here's a link to tuning a NON limited chainsaw. Setting up the low speed jet is the same.

Thank you for one of the best videos I've seen on how to properly adjust the H screw. Just picked up a new 661 carb and added a Eagon air filter and I'm pretty sure I'm on the limiter, or really close. Haven't had it in wood yet but will try tomorrow. Will definitely use this technique. I have a tach and by ear it sounds close. L&H screws are right about 1.5 turns out. Appreciate the video.

What's it pulling in the wood when tuned correctly?
My echo 590 has a limited coil and as a firewood saw I normally run it regardless as its generally pretty close anyways. But I've gotta get the tach on it.

To be perfectly honest with you, I'm not sure. I only use the tach initially to make sure I'm below the rev limiter. I do the rest by ear after that.

@@samishsawworks5870 I was more curious than anything. Saw didn't sound stock, and I believe they make peak power at somewhere in the 9,600 ish range, pretty much where it's gonna run in the wood tuned right with an appropriately filed bar/chain to match the powerhead. Tuned saws often make more power at higher rpm. There are ported saws that will pull 10.5-11.5 in the wood with the same bar and chain that a stock version will pull at about 9,500. More chain speed/faster cutting. Obviously the ear tune is still what counts. Just curious what she leveled out at assuming it's a modded saw. Regardless, that saw sounds damn good when you are done tuning it.

@@bryantitus6634 I hear ya. I'll take my tach with me next time I see the owner (he's a neighbor so I see him fairly regularly) and get some numbers for kicks. It's a 201t that I did a muffler mod and timing advance on. I have checked rpm in the cut on saws that I've ported to see/verify the gains, but I didn't think to do it with this saw.

@@samishsawworks5870 not asking you to go out of your way to do so. Was just curious as to whether you had. I know stock 201t's wouldnt as happily bounce off the limiter as this saw did. Clearly it's got noticeable gains in the wood. That's what really matters. I'd assume it's probably pulling in the neighborhood of 10.5 in the wood. She sounds pretty mean. Not as hot as a full tilt ported saw does but definitely a very happy saw, but should hold up better as a work saw than a ported saw just because of the nature of porting.

@@bryantitus6634 Well now I HAVE to........ you got me curious! Haha. The person I did it for is in tree service. I'm a "ported saw guy" through and through, but on the 201t the gains from these simple mods are just plain excellent bang for the buck. I was surprised how quickly it changed its attitude with about 20 minutes of work. He went from never wanting to use it to grabbing it every time.
