    Last year I bought a 455 rancher. Took off the muffler after a few tanks of fuel to see how the piston & cylinder were wearing in and on mine, it's just a hollow can, like yours after the baffle delete but with an IMO small hole under the spark arrester/deflector like your dad's. Been thinking about opening it up, just wasn't sure how a strato saw would react. Thanks for sharing!

    The best small firewood saw period! I love mine, had it for years, and it still runs great! If you you can only want one saw, this one is my top pick!

    In my opinion only; the Husqvarna 455 Rancher is the best all-a-round saw on the market today. My Company has a 2010 model with not one issue. We have five Husqvarna saws right now. One Stihl, a small one for light delimbing.
    The Husqvarna 372xp is in my opinion only; one of the best pro saws for all-a-round professional jobs.
    God bless!

      Thanks, I appreciate it. Yeah, they're great saws. They get overlooked a lot. People are catching on in my area, but one used to be able to buy them dirt cheap. They're a bit heavier than others in the same category, but not enough to deter me. At the end of the day, they'll put wood in the truck and a smile on your face. All for a decent price at that!

    Great saw! I’ve had mine for eight years now and it’s still running great. I cut probably 2-3 cords of wood per season (we heat with wood) and this saw has been excellent. I’ve considered mods, but I need reliable service so I’ve left her stock. Good luck with the mods, it’s fun tinkerin!

      I’ve had the 455 two seasons this will be my third.. I’ve cut about 16 face cords 8 per year.. besides some sap I can clean off it starts like the day I bought it. Most reliable saw out there I’ve been told many times.. good video.

    Definitely noticable improvement. Seems to have far better responsiveness, a little more on the top end and it seems to not lose its lungs on the bottom end when you load it up.
    Makes it run, well... Like a 55.5 cc saw probably should run stock. Not all choked up and slower than a 50cc saw running .325.

    My 455 doesn’t have the baffle plate inside the factory muffler. Husky must have realized removing it was a good thing. I still intend on opening up the exhaust hole like you did. That opening is super tiny!

    Two stroke exhaust is very complex if you really get down to exhaust pulses, expansion chambers, tail length etc. I’m not sure louder or less restriction means more power. It might. It might also lean the saw way out requiring a reject to richen up fuel.

    2 stroke motors will burn down if the don't breath correctly. Reducing exhaust back pressure could cause a burn down. I stick to the engineered stock exhaust. My 455 Rancher runs great as a stock machine. Good luck with the mods.

      @tylerheard1279 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The small mod he did will not cause "burn down," In fact, I've never seen any damage unless there is excessive back pressure and a leak at the exhaust to cylinder mating surface.

    • @markcole6475
      @markcole6475 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That’s an old wives tail….the only reason any engine would “burn down” after a mod would be because of an improper tune afterwards!
      Same with running an engine with open headers …many people have always said “You’ll burn your valves if you run open headers” ….again..only if it’s not properly tuned……not because of the open headers.

    Two-cycle engines require some back pressure to perform optimally. I have a newer version of this saw and it performs flawlessly as long as the routine maintenance is done. Throttle response, at least in my case, is redundant.

    Daphne is the luckiest dog in the world! Thanks for the video and showing the disassembly, removing the baffle plate, opening up the exhaust exit, and assembly of the crimped (pinch weld) style muffler. You never know what you are getting into once you start going past the point of no return. I'm wondering if the Chinese AM mufflers are more open out of the box? Before you know it you'll give your dad's saw a base gasket delete. What saw where use using at 19:10?

    How is your mod not melting the chain brake? Opened port beyond the deflector ,just wondering cause I did this same mod, opened the exhaust port like this, didn’t work out, I had to add an extra long deflector to deflect the exhaust gases away from all of the plastics to avoid melt downs.Lol them smaller x torques need all the help they can get, power wise, but can be tricky to tune

    • @samishsawworks5870
      @samishsawworks5870  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I explain it in the video. If you watch at the 12:40 mark in the video it shows this. I didn't open it any further beyond the deflector than the factory hole was. I think you're seeing the shiny edge on top that I touched/cleaned up with the burr. Underneath where the actual outlet is, isn't opened that far forward. The majority of the exhaust gasses hit the deflector and push ALL of the the charge (including any little bit that's trying to go straight up) out forward toward the front of the saw. Therefore, no melted plastics.

    Just tried this on my 460 Rancher. Had the three bolt set up but the baffle plate was spot welded in about 9 places and removing it caused damage. Not blaming Samish. I just can’t get over the lengths Husqvarna went through to make sure the 460 baffle won’t come out without half destroying the muffler. I’m debating looking the net for someone who sells these mufflers without the baffles. I called West Coast Saw asking why they had no bark boxes or anything for a “homeowner” 460 as he sniffed the answer.

    • @Hugh_Jarsole

      Most people don't spend money modding a throw away saw (plastic bottom end, when its cooked its not really rebuildable), so it wouldn't sell well enough to be worth it for him designing and tooling all the stuff needed to offer those components

    • @tylerheard1279

      Usually it will need high jet adjustment. It will not warm up as fast and may need a slight low jet adjustment and possibly an increase in idle rpm depending on the saw and how aggressive you go with the opening. Kind of a case by case deal.

    The dog really wants to play fetch with that toy..so bored. The sound is slightly louder because of less deflection of sound waves by the baffle. I would put fins inside to further muffle and gain compression. It needs to have the right amount of channeling to be more efficient as well as quiet.

    Two stroke engines require an amount of backpressure to operate efficiently and taking out the baffle plate may have just as easily reduced power as increased it. Removing the baffle would have reduced backpressure that would have necessitated retuning of the mixture/ignition at the very least. Husqvarna would not have added the baffle for no good reason as it costs money, it might have been for performance or noise of both. The only modified exhaust that would be worth putting on is one where there is documentary evidence of its benefit, having a biased subjective opinion is not enough.

      @@tylerheard1279Emissions are not a principal criteria of two stroke small machines as they will probably never meet the current requirements, hence the reason that many are moving to 4 stroke designs.

    • @tylerheard1279
      @tylerheard1279 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @clivewilliams3661 you are correct, it's tough to meet emissions with a two stroke. That's why they use all kinds of "tricks" to fall within what the regulatory agency considers acceptable for that model size during that particular production period. As you may have noticed, many people in the comments that own a 455 do not have the baffle plate installed from the factory. My guess is that husqvarna added it to improve emissions or removed it at a later date because they found another way to improve emissions without sacrificing power. They have to meet emissions yet constantly balance that with usability and output to stay competitive.
