    I'm glad you mentioned that 272s are a bit picky or finicky. Just built a 272xp on my channel and it proved to be a bit more of a porting chllenge then any of the 266 builds I've done..
    And yep 200 series saws get intake leaks , at least 2 out of the last 4 I've built have!!!

    I still use the standard Stihl Service Manual routine on my big saws - set the rpm at 3300, lean out the L for max rpm, nte 3700, and then richen up to specified idle rpm. H I set with a tach to give me a slight four stroke. I do try to limit my H rpm to 12,600 to 12,800 on everything. I may later richen up the H, depending on how it acts in the cut as they break in. I do not put a new saw in the wood until it has at least five tanks of gas on it and limit it to one tank a day. After it has 15 tanks on it I will use it until the chain gets dull or I am dead tired. With as much sand that we have around here the former usually ends it’s day.

    Building saws in Louisiana putting them together is simple,getting them tuned for cutting is where the saw either works or falls on its face.Your saw tales make a real difference when chasing gremlins. Ask and the information comes out. Building 372’s homelite, McCullough,Poulan and a P62 partner pioneer seventy cc is get in the door and honestly, without you fella’s insight Iwould. Have pulled myself bald . I understand the notion it can’t leave till it’s right. Parts are another letter and some prayers to get those little items. Thanks for your willingness to pass the knowledge on down the line. By the way happy birthday Harv. I know it’s a couple days late but a fella that our age take longer to. Write a letter. You got me by three months and change. This is supposed to be fun but they did not mention the aches and muscle behaving like those saws. Take care and look forward to saw tales.

    I have got into the habit to use a vacuum pressure hand pump to check the saw before I even put gas into the machine. That way I just do not have all the problems you are talking about. Good information on how to apply the gasket sealer. Most people just glob too much sealant and clog the small holes. Good information for the average saw fella. VF

    I usually take the same number of strokes on my chains but if I have one that is not sharp when I am through, I hit it with enough dditional links to get it sharp. My rakers are set a little hungry, so I do not have to file them every time I sharpen the chain. I am looking for a spark plug gap between the cutter and the raker. If I do not see that, I hit the rakers a few licks with my raker file. I do slope the rakers after I am through filing it, to keep down chatter. My chains are sharp and will cut.

    That’s an ‘80 era husky. I had a similar chain break on one of my mid ‘80’s Poulans, 395, I think. It was a good saw, about 38 cc with a 16 inch bar and 3/8 chain. It was my favorite saw because it always started with a minimal amount of pulls. I can’t tell you how many times it rode of my tractor with me, down by the clutch of my 7740 with its scabbard on the bar.
    I do the same on standoffs with 1184. I use Dirko HT on base gaskets and 1184 on everything else.

    I use copper coat. Spray one side let dry, then spray other side and let dry. Even when dry it still has a tacky sticky feeling. I have made thinner base gaskets this way to reduce squish. Used it on 8n ford head gasket. Work like a champ. Been running for years.

    Iron horse I love saws as much as I love my small block chevy's it was awesome to here your comment about the 302 tons of people would tell you you are crazy and a 302 is a ford motor. I'm 33 so not near the experience in life or the amount of knowledge you have but was just wondering if you knew how they came up with the 302. It's actually a destroked 327 they make kits you can buy with the short skirt pistons and knew crank and rods and put one together with a 327 block the cast is the same. Anyway I just figured I would bend your ear a little and if you didn't know I figured you would appreciate knowing a young buck was listening to ya and had a little knowledge of his own. Thanks so much for your videos you and buckin have made my life so much better.

    Mine are always sharp, too. I put a brand new LGX on my 460 and the rakers on the right side were way out of spec - to tall. It would not cut a straight line right out of the box. I filed them down but I put an RS chain on the 460 and hung the LGX in the shop. It is back to spec, now, but I check every chain, now

    When I adjust a saw I want to hear it maintain the same RPM throughout the cut. If it starts dropping, I will adjust it until it does not drop off in the cut. I bench tune my saws pretty good before I check them out in the wood. I do check my saws afterwards to make sure they do not exceed my 12,600-12,800 at WFO.

    That’s right, the bean counters run companies, today, and not the engineers. You see it in everything, cars, chainsaws, tools and even axes. They are made to look like the older stuff, but they are cheapened in the areas that make them dependable products. I will take my 50 year old True Temper axes over any of the junk sold by Collins, today. I bought a Collins Boys axe a month or so ago and spent a few hours removing the safety information and eat your hands up polyurethane finish from the handle and replacing it with a Danish Oil and linseed oil finish. Now, it is a pretty good axe. I do not like it’s stainless axe head because stainless is softer than a good carbon steel and won’t hold an edge. It will also chip worse than carbon steel.

    All that good sealer, like yamabond. Is made by 3M. It's called 3 bond. The grey is the best. I've used it to seal up gas tanks. I've got a 245 poulan that's had that sealing the seam on the tank for 10 years or more. Costs a little extra, but it's worth it. They got 2 kinds. The stuff with mk in it- usually a little thinner, and the kind without.

    I'll give you my little secret to sealing up a 2 stroke intake with plastic manifolds. Aluminum HVAC tape. Put the sticky side of the tape on the manifold and just cut out what needs to go, Works better than stock paper gaskets and has enough crush for a good seal.
    80% of all crapy running saws are intake leaks, anytime you can't easily dial in a good tune on a warmed up saw it's most likely an intake leak. I've seen guys throw money at saws replacing shit that had nothing to do with what was wrong. Pressure test won't verify some leaks but if you use the Aluminum tape on the plastic intakes they won't leak.

    • @thomaslindroos1667
      @thomaslindroos1667 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait what, can this be true, I mean, amazing if it is. But its perhaps a little thin, what if I layer the tape onto itself so I skip the sticky side all together

    • @ronbrown2770
      @ronbrown2770 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomaslindroos1667 That is too much glue and the fuel will just wash it out.
      One layer is all that is needed Flaten the mating surfaces clean them stick the tape to the manifold cut away the impulse transfers if there is one cut out the port, I usually just cut an X in the bolt holes, doing this holds the bolts in place snug it all up. I use 12 inch-pounds snug then finish 16-18 inches final I know it seems low but going much more trashes the manifold, blue loc-tite but just a dab. I run my old 266xp this way because nothing else ever worked for more than a few tanks of fuel. That 30-year-old saw pulls chain like crazy. Ported with dome piston base gasket deleted stock carb open pipe. I don't run it without earplugs.
