- Dyno Joe teaches me what to listen for while adjusting the carburetor on a chainsaw. Tips on running your saw in summer vs winter. What it means and how to make your saw more rich or more lean. Also how to tell if you have other issues such as bad chainsaws seals, a worn clutch, bad lines, etc. We also show what tachometer he uses and why he uses that make and model vs others. I have had a hard time knowing exactly what people were talking about with certain engine sounds etc. Dyno Joe does a great job at showing what to listen for. We forgot to add the times in for the cuts. With the 036 running rich it took 15 seconds to make the cut. After Joe dialed the saw in to it’s sweet spot it took 12 seconds to make the same cut all while burning less fuel. This will all add up.
Truth is it takes years and extremely good hearing and feeling

That Joe is amazing! He definitely has an ear for tuning a saw. I'm guessing this works with all 2 cycle engines like hedge trimmers, blowers, and tillers as well as the saws. "Sounds like" (get the pun) I need to get my Sthil fleet out and take a listen! Thanks y'all!

The clutch isn’t worn, it’s the way those older saws are. The springs do slowly stretch overtime and cause the chain to “walk” a little. Even when those saws were new it’s common for the chain to move before the engine is warmed. When the saw is warmed up and if the chain moves a lot, it’s time to change the clutch or clutch springs. The noise Rachel was hearing was the clutch and clutch drum ringing. Again, all those older Stihls sound like that. The early 066 red light/flat top definitely has a distinctive sound. The aftermarket clutches tend not to walk or ring like the OEM ones. It’s also harder to “feather throttle” with some of those aftermarket clutches I’ve noticed, making the saw’s trigger less sensitive. Particularly when they’re just a few wood fibers holding and you try to cut them without sawing into the dirt. I threw away all the aftermarket clutches I got, and saved the springs and “rebuilt” the OEM ones. I feel like a geek making these “long winded, know it all and probably extremely boring to most people” comments lol. But that’s what happens when someone says something that starts you thinking about what has accumulated in the “cobweb section” of your mind 😂

@@hardworkingmanoutdoors Thanks! There’s still a lot I don’t know, like with porting, port timing, squish and all that. When it comes to hopping a saw up all I know is old school logger mods, more air going in, and more air going out, and chains. One thing a lot of people don’t know is you can change angles to cut better in different types of wood, soft, hard, green, dead, petrified, etc. I wish I was better on camera, that would be a informative video. When my dad logged they used Husky 1100s, 2100s, and Stihl 056 magnums, and Magnum 2’s, etc, but his firewood saw was a Stihl 036 pro, like yours, and I’ve seen him bring down huge trees in a short amount of time with that little 62 cc saw. But he could tweak a chain to perfection, and running his chains in the wood it was filed for, you would think you were running a bigger saw because of how well it was cutting.

Good video he knows his saws I prefer old Saw's I have not had any luck with the newer one's and hate the oil and gas caps. I run a 28 super,046 and a 400 echo.. Take care be safe and well.
Thank you! Joe definitely knows his stuff. The first quality saw I ever bought was a Stihl 028 Super. I picked it up at a garage sale, the paint on the bar didn’t even show wear but it had been sitting in a barn for years. I paid $5 for it, replaced the fuel lines, cleaned the carb, and ran it for years. Still proud of that deal!

They are two stroke so the oil is mixed with the gas.

I think the 036 was may not have been the best example for this video today. It acts to me like it has a small air leak somewhere, and the confused looks on Joe's face backed up that thought. His adjustments were not getting the results he expected because the saw is running erratic. IMO
That is possible but we had other saws there he could have used. He said he couldn’t make it too rich for example because my limiter caps were still on. The cut time was reduced by 3 seconds after the adjustment though.
@hardworkingmanoutdoors I believe you will soon see for yourself. When the saw will not hold a tune, but I could be wrong...

Id say low is still a touch lean.
I’ve been slowly adjusting them as they break in.
a 4 stroke chain saw?
Jerry, not a 4 stroke chainsaw but when the 2 stroke saw is too rich and it goes up and down in sound like a four stroke engine it’s called 4 stroking.

Its not the clutch its the springs. Its still too rich. You dont tune a saw by free reving it with no load. Oh but hes a old pro lmao.
He tuned the saw in the cut, that is why we had the log there??
That saw is screaming for him to maybe do a Lil work on that chain man. Poor saw can't get no relief
