This is mostly confirmed already, but for icing on the cake, a friend at a local GameStop informed me that their Nintendo rep kept referring this holiday season as the “last big season for the switch”. I know that’s pretty “my dad works at Nintendo” of me but there is a lot of evidence to support it.
Something I haven't really seen people mention is that even the *sizzle reel* at the end of the September Direct was just a recap of the Direct. That's not what they usually do with sizzle reels. They didn't show 5 second trailers for games they didn’t talk about, like normal.
Exactly! The sizzle reel was just to show that the Switch has new games for the Switch in 2024.... until Summer 2024. Because something bigger will take the place or be reveal in Summer 2024 ;)
That's one thing I really enjoyed, and I wish they would keep doing that going forward. My memory is shot so I love the idea of reminding everyone what's coming down the pipeline!
One small thing that may point towards it further, is the button colors in both the big upcoming remakes. In Mario RPG, the button prompts have some pretty classic color association for Nintendo. Red A Button, Green Y Button for example. That's how it even was in the japanese version because that's how the famicom was, so if it was JUST Mario RPG it wouldn't be worth much just leaning into that jp version more. But it's not. The Thousand Year Door remake ALSO associates the A button with red and the Y button with Green, which has never been the case in TTYD. So the tl;dr of that is small detail of button to color association has some speculating that the Switch's successor has colored buttons like the famicom, and TTYD and Mario RPG trailers were running on the new hardware due to rumors of it being backwards compatible. Not a lot, but it's a neat thing. They were at least made with new hardware in mind.
@@Echo2424 I think you misunderstood. In the original, the A Button was green and the Y button was grey yes because they matched the original gamecube buttons. In the remake footage from the direct, the A button is Red and Y is Green, differing from the original. It's a small, weird detail that simply COULD hint at colored buttons on next system not a guarantee.
Oh damn I was there for that video, can't believe it's been 7 years. Every few years I rewatch that video to think back on this whole Switch journey and how far we've come.
That black holes segue at 4:14 was pure genius. And equally genius was the video editing at 5:11, wrapping up Arlo's infinitely brilliant analogy with Mario being infinitely crushed into a singularity.
While a next gen is likely, something I do want to point out is that even if the switch is going to keep going for another few years, I feel like the output we're seeing would be similar. Nintendo just unloaded an incredible amount of content for basically all of their series over the past 2 years that I find it hard to imagine there was much left for them to put out aside from these smaller projects. It's not that we're necessarily reaching the end of a console's lifespan, it's that we're at a bit of a resting point in development cycles, but for financial reasons, those almost always go at the end of console lifespans.
I agree, I mean, these are pretty big resource intensive remakes and remasters and a whole bunch of them too. Under different circumstances I'd write this up to a slow year. What I think is really happening is Koizumi has finally taken the Mario helm.
This argument is silly. If there was no new console coming they would 100% have shown 3D Mario or Metroid Prime 4 by now. Both have been in development for like 5-6 years, there's no way they aren't ready to be shown.
Thing is it can't keep going for a few more years. Nvidia does not manufacturer the Tegra X1 chip anymore. They have not made a single one for 2 years now. Nintendo will run out of chips eventually because they bought the last 30 million Nvidia had 2 years ago.
There's a good chance that these games are for the Switch 2 as well. I feel like the new switch will most likely be backwards compatible but I might be on hopium
I'm convinced Nintendo's next console is coming sometime in 2024, or at the latest, the first half of 2025. Switch sales have started going down, like Arlo said, we're getting a lot of remakes and smaller games, it just feels like the time has come. And I can't wait to see what the new system is?
Saw this posted in the Gizzcord. King Gizzard mention in an Arlo video was the last thing I expected to happen. Glad to see the band get more attention. They absolutely deserve it. Magenta Mountain is brilliant and one of my favourite tracks. Great pick and is definitely one of their most beginner friendly tracks. Highly recommend KGLW as a mega Gizzhead myself (their 25th album, The Silver Cord, comes out next month).
When the September Direct started with "Splatoon 3 DLC" as one of the bookmark reveals, I knew there wasn't much new left to be excited for on the Switch.
I mean, most modern consoles have a lifespan of about 5 to 6 years, so it is pretty safe to say that we'll probably get a taste of what next gen will be at some point next year or early the next one.
the last two generations have been more like 7 years (at least for sony and microsoft) so I think everybody knows there's a new nintendo system on the way.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we get 3D Mario in the first year again. Besides Bowser’s fury (which seemed like a much smaller project), we’ve been waiting since Odyssey. That and Metroid Prime 4 seem likely for year 1.
I think that the hardware on the handheld only needs an incremental upgrade. Most people's eyes wouldn't notice the difference between 1080p and 4k on a handheld screen, and that's already an upgrade over the 720p screen we have now. Since Nintendo already has a partnership with nVidia (using their Tegra X1 in the current Switch), they could offload the 4k and added framerate to the console dock using their DLSS technology. This would allow the handheld to produce smaller, more complex images (maybe with some raytracing) and the dock to scale them up to the 4k 60fps that seems to be the standard with their competition. As an added bonus, this new, upscaling dock could be compatible with the current Switch, allowing it to be used for backwards compatibility while the new handheld moves things forward.
@@jcorpac We already know that the new console is going to be a Switch-style hybrid system that uses DLSS, actually. They showed it off to people behind closed doors recently, and it was able to run that Matrix tech demo for Unreal Engine 5 that came out a bit ago.
No one has ever claimed a next gen switch was never happening, the big annoyance has been the constant insistence of a better version being right around the corner since essentially day one because people just couldn't find the hadware acceptable.
I think the one thing that felt like a huge clue like, "oh switch is nearing it's end." was the sizzle reel at the end where it was like, "Let us show you all the games coming to the switch!" Like it felt like, "Yea this is the last year for the switch."

I didn't expect King Gizzard to come up. I also got into the band recently and while I don't like many of the fan favorites, they've still got some nifty music. Magenta Mountain and Candles are the most delicious songs on the album.

the large increase in remakes, remasters, and ports makes me think that Nintendo is really trying to go hard on first party software before the end of the switch. their hardware sales have been going down for a few years now, and remakes are very easy ways to boost your profits without doing a lot of work or spending a lot of money (at least when compared to 100% new original games)
All I care about for the next gen whenever it happens is mandatory backwards compatibility for switch games currently out on the system. I got a pretty big collection of games and I'd like to keep as much as I can on one system.
I agree that Princess Peach: Showtime looks like it could be fun but doesn't give the impression that it will be a large sprawling adventure. I would like to think Metroid Prime 4 will be a cross platform launch title,the same as Breath of the Wild on Wii U and switch
I have the feeling that when Metroid Prime 4 was delayed and passed on to Retro, it’s also because they decided it would be for the next gen console instead. It makes sense, Metroid Prime is a FPS that can appeal to a broader gaming audience, it’s a great launching title for the next console.
Take note that after the second Zelda game it can be seen as an indicator of the end of the current Nintendo Era, and Tears can be a launch title for the new system like they did with Wii and Wii U.

People can become upset but you're completely right. I've had the feeling sink in since playing and loving Tears of the Kingdom. Breath of the Wild came out at the start of the Switch's life and showed me what the console was capable of, and I got that feeling again with Tears of the Kingdom - but at the other end of the Switch's life. TotK has definitely felt like a swan song for me, almost a completed picture of showing what the Switch can do after all the years of developing games for it. I was also a completely different person and at a completely different stage of my life between playing BotW and TotK, and playing TotK had me realise that a few times. It's been 6+ years now since the Switch's release. So many games have come out on the Switch by now. I feel like I've played the main titles, let them become a part of me, and moved on from them, and it's been great. When I think of playing games like Breath of the Wild, Link's Awakening, Octopath Traveler, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Pokemon Shield, it doesn't feel like that long ago - until I realise it's already been years ago. It also feels like a lot of the main title game developers for Nintendo are working on projects for the next console, and that a lot of the 'new' these future games can bring to the table is tied to the updated hardware of a new console. But that's just my impression.
I was first introduced to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard through the music theory channels discussing their exploration into the realm of microtonal music with the _Flying Microtonal Banana_ album. I've yet to hear the majority of their works, but _Rattlesnake_ was quite enjoyable.
Arlo x King Gizzard is something I didn't know I needed. Also, I'm in the crowd of the Magenta Mountain music video where they live debuted it, so I am literally in this Arlo video.
To be fair, Pikmin 4 can also fall under that mid-tier outsourced (Eighting) category if you’re leaving out Mario Wonder (seemingly made internally & is the last big Switch 1 game).
The "Pro" Switch didn't happen for one simple reason. It would have needed an entirely new Nvidia chip and at that point you may as well just call it next gen. Right? What alternatives would they have had to pro it up... A little more RAM, more onboard storage? What's the actual point there. We aren't talking about bumping up the clock cycles (which Nintendo already considers maxed out for the battery performance trade off. Who wants a 1 hour battery?) People just PRESUMED because MS And Sony made mid-generation Pro versions of their consoles Nintendo would as well. Which they actually did in a very Nintendo way of the OLED and Lite models.
I’ll maintain that, barring rumors, it didn’t make sense to expect the next console coming this year, because it was very possible for Nintendo to fill out their lineup for longer. But yeah, after this direct, it’s pretty obvious
It reminds me of the 3ds' last games. Yoshi's Wooly World, Kirby's epic Yarn, Luigi's Mansion 1, Bowser's Inside Story, Mario Maker, etc. Almost all remakes, though in that case the switch had already been out for a couple years
Hey, all these remakes now are still more interesting to me now than all the Wii U ports that dominated the first half or three quarters of the Switch's life. These games might be remakes, but they aren't games I just paid $60 for a few short years ago. An SNES remake, sure! GameCube ports? Why not, I haven't touched GameCube in several years. GBA remake? Yeah why not! And we're still getting new games this year. More new games this year than I ever got during the Wii U port drought (and yeah I'm gonna call that a drought, I owned a Wii U, I played those games already, and Nintendo rarely had anything new for me) For the first time owning a Switch, and I picked it up at launch, I feel like it's actually worth owning one.
A big part of why we know an updated switch is coming is that it was literally leaked a couple days ago by Microsoft in court documents. So that's neat
Not only was Tears of The Kingdom one of Switch's biggest and most complex titles but it was also the last high development cost release on the console.
As someone who "doesn't believe it till I see it", I'm just going to sit on the sidelines and wait to see how everything plays out. In the meantime, I just want to play the Paper Mario TTYD remake already!!!!😩
I'm not so sure about it releasing next year, but there's a good chance. There's 2 strains of evidence we could go by. 1. The Switch was announced October 2016, and released March 2017. About half a year, so if the next console's announced this October, it might release early-mid 2024. However, the Wii U was a failed console, and Nintendo wanted to move on from that ASAP, so that might be why it had a hasty launch. 2. The Wii U on the other hand was announced April 2011, and released November 2012. A year and a half, so if the next console's announced this October, it might release early 2025! Keep in mind that the Wii U followed on from the Wii, and Nintendo wanted to keep the hype from the Wii alive as long as possible, hence the eventual slow launch. There's a good chance it might release middle of next year if announced soon, but I'd say there's a bigger chance of it releasing around 2025 just cause of how much hype the Switch has generated. Hopefully I'm wrong and we'll see a 2024 release, but it's hard to get that excited when the evidence points to a 2025 release, of a console that probs won't do as well as the Switch. Please, please let me be wrong
I was at walmart yesterday and a majority of the games are now less than the 60 dollar price. It confused me because Nintendo basically never drops their prices.
Wal Mart has been doing that for ages on Switch games (since like 2028), -10 USD (or % equivalent on cheaper games) vs. list. I saved a bunch of money on new releases b/c of this, shame you're only finding this now
Speculating on the next console never really bothered me. I think it was fun and the pro most likely was going to come out if a certain thing didn't happen. The stuff that annoys me is the baseless claims that people will make and state as fact (mostly poketubers) It just spreads misinformation and makes people upset when the thing that should be obvious didn't happen.
Arlo has exquisite taste in music. I recently got into King Gizz after the YT algorithm kept recommending me their latest music videos for Gila Monster and Dragon, and they've been consistently in my current most played songs for the past few months.
Before the September direct I was very much “I will believe it when I see it”, then the direct happened and it just felt like a final year direct for a Nintendo console.
We don't have a single new game for the holiday. That is unheard of, except in the event of a new system on the brink of release. I think the people who are in denial at this point are mostly the teenage crowd, who haven't witnessed generation after generation of console lifecycle patterns.

I don't tend to naysay without reason, but I would also recommend not getting hyped until we get a few teasers or leaks of gameplay. I remember the Spaceworld 2000 Link/Ganondorf fight preceeding the Gamecube, and the giant Zelda spider trailer coming out ahead of the Wii Until something big like that drops, that looks like something the current hardware *can not handle* I don't think I'll buy into anything, especially after how many times "Switch Pro" was paraded around this site.

Another factor I think that contributes to this sentiment: Directs are practically getting completely leaked these days. This could mean the top priority in security is not the Switch
I could see a new hardware announcement coming before/during April. Nintendo's financial year ends on March 31st, and if they are at all confident about their next console, I think they'll start releasing some details before then to get some end/start of (the financial) year excitement going with their shareholders. I am not an expert on this, I barely know anything about business, but I feel like this makes the most sense based on my very limited knowledge
You know what the best argument for the Switch coming to the end of its life is? Pikmin 4. The Joy-Cons are treasures you can collect in the game, and they’re part of the “Newly Nostalgic” collection. Newly nostalgic. As in, a thing of the past, perhaps somewhat recently. Why would they call the system the game launched on, Nintendo’s current generation, nostalgic unless they had something else cooled up and almost ready to serve?
To throw some more speculation on the next system based off what we've seen: Tears of the Kingdom to me is undeniable proof that the system will be backwards compatible, perhaps with enhancements on some of Nintendo's more important bigger games like Sony and Microsoft have done. With the next system obviously being so close, it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't delay their big Zelda that's been years in the making another year to do another simultaneous current gen + next gen release like they did with TP and BotW. And they're also not going to just not have a big Zelda on the system for several years until the next one is done, and they're ALSO ALSO not going to make people buy another copy of TotK for the new system a year after release. The system HAS to play Switch games. I expect a pretty similar formfactor to the Switch because of it. They can't abandon the home console + portable hybrid at this point.
My one concern is that (unless it’s just gonna be a Switch 2) I have no clue what big feature they could add that would justify a new console. Every modern Nintendo console has had some sort of hook that makes the games made for it unique. The Wii had it’s motion controls, the DS family had two screens, with the 3DS having actual 3D visuals, and the Wii U had… two screens again. I can’t really think of anything that they could add to their next console that would be worth while. The Switch has motion controls, HD rumble, coverage for home and handheld use, NFC reading, a touch screen, and whatever that camera/sensor under the controller is. You could add a second screen, but the Wii U had already demonstrated why that isn’t necessary. You could bring back 3D, but that was always a supplementary feature, not something that added significant differences. I’m just kinda hoping the next console is an upgraded, ironed out Switch.
Imagine 3 years into the lifetime of Switch2, they finally release the Switch Pro. Not Switch2 Pro, but the Switch Pro that has been rumored all these years. The thought just amuses me.

I felt like the very hard push to pre-order all the early 2024 games now was a good indicator as well. After all, what could /possibly happen/ between now and early 2024 that might make someone hold off on a purchase? Getting people to pre-order now means you don't have them sitting there at launch saying "eh, I'll just wait on the Switch 2 to play that."
This is purely based on ‘vibes’, but i think Nintendo is gearing up to do something similar to what MS/Sony did, where they put out a new console, but spend a year or two supporting both consoles. For better or worse, I think the next console will be more or less a stronger switch, but will have a year or so where all games are released on both. So I do think there is significant work being done on new switch games, but I think they are waiting for a Switch 2 reveal (or whatever less intuitive name they slap on it…) to reveal the new games.
Something you didn't mention that suggests the Switch successor is coming is some details of games revealed in the September Direct. The TTYD remakes colors the button prompts like the SNES, something you don't see with the current Switch. There is also the significant upgrades to Peach's model in PP Showtime (even compared to Wonder and SMRPG) suggesting it is meant for higher resolution. While these will be available on Switch, I believe they will also be some of the first games available for what comes next. Why would they color the button prompts for a remake of a Gamecube game like an SNES game? Why would they upgrade Peach's model if not that her game will be on a more powerful system where the upgrades will be noticed?
@kellyrousseau3839 I doubt they will be re-using the _super_ brand, Nintendo tends to adopt a brand, use it for some time and then abandon it (in some way they use their brands to indicate the timeframe when something was released). They named "Super" to many games released in the SNES (like Super Mario Kart, Super Punch Out, Super Metroid, and even third parties doubled down with Super Castlevania IV, Super Double Dragon, Super Bomberman, Super Ghouls n' Ghosts or Super Star Wars), they named 64 to many Nintendo 64 games, they named DX to Gameboy Color games, Advance to GBA games, DS to NDS games, they also used the prefix "new" for a lot of games released around the same time, or the suffix 3D for 3DS games. With Wii and Wii U they still used the brand Wii, and the brand U for naming some of their games (but with more moderation than before). With the Switch they have barely used the brand to name games, however they have used the brand for naming other stuff in their ecosystem.
I think there's a strong chance that prime 4 will be the last major title for the switch, they might focus more on a "switch 2" version in the end like what happened with botw

Oh damn I was there for that video, can't believe it's been 7 years. Every few years I rewatch that video to think back on this whole Switch journey and how far we've come.
That black holes segue at 4:14 was pure genius. And equally genius was the video editing at 5:11, wrapping up Arlo's infinitely brilliant analogy with Mario being infinitely crushed into a singularity.
While a next gen is likely, something I do want to point out is that even if the switch is going to keep going for another few years, I feel like the output we're seeing would be similar. Nintendo just unloaded an incredible amount of content for basically all of their series over the past 2 years that I find it hard to imagine there was much left for them to put out aside from these smaller projects. It's not that we're necessarily reaching the end of a console's lifespan, it's that we're at a bit of a resting point in development cycles, but for financial reasons, those almost always go at the end of console lifespans.
I agree, I mean, these are pretty big resource intensive remakes and remasters and a whole bunch of them too.
Under different circumstances I'd write this up to a slow year.
What I think is really happening is Koizumi has finally taken the Mario helm.

This argument is silly. If there was no new console coming they would 100% have shown 3D Mario or Metroid Prime 4 by now. Both have been in development for like 5-6 years, there's no way they aren't ready to be shown.
Thing is it can't keep going for a few more years. Nvidia does not manufacturer the Tegra X1 chip anymore. They have not made a single one for 2 years now. Nintendo will run out of chips eventually because they bought the last 30 million Nvidia had 2 years ago.
There's a good chance that these games are for the Switch 2 as well. I feel like the new switch will most likely be backwards compatible but I might be on hopium
I'm convinced Nintendo's next console is coming sometime in 2024, or at the latest, the first half of 2025. Switch sales have started going down, like Arlo said, we're getting a lot of remakes and smaller games, it just feels like the time has come. And I can't wait to see what the new system is?

Saw this posted in the Gizzcord. King Gizzard mention in an Arlo video was the last thing I expected to happen. Glad to see the band get more attention. They absolutely deserve it.
Magenta Mountain is brilliant and one of my favourite tracks. Great pick and is definitely one of their most beginner friendly tracks. Highly recommend KGLW as a mega Gizzhead myself (their 25th album, The Silver Cord, comes out next month).

When the September Direct started with "Splatoon 3 DLC" as one of the bookmark reveals, I knew there wasn't much new left to be excited for on the Switch.
While you’re generally right, we have to understand that Splatoon is *MASSIVE* in Japan. To them, Side Order is absolutely a main event.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we get 3D Mario in the first year again. Besides Bowser’s fury (which seemed like a much smaller project), we’ve been waiting since Odyssey. That and Metroid Prime 4 seem likely for year 1.
I think that the hardware on the handheld only needs an incremental upgrade. Most people's eyes wouldn't notice the difference between 1080p and 4k on a handheld screen, and that's already an upgrade over the 720p screen we have now. Since Nintendo already has a partnership with nVidia (using their Tegra X1 in the current Switch), they could offload the 4k and added framerate to the console dock using their DLSS technology. This would allow the handheld to produce smaller, more complex images (maybe with some raytracing) and the dock to scale them up to the 4k 60fps that seems to be the standard with their competition. As an added bonus, this new, upscaling dock could be compatible with the current Switch, allowing it to be used for backwards compatibility while the new handheld moves things forward.
@@jcorpac We already know that the new console is going to be a Switch-style hybrid system that uses DLSS, actually. They showed it off to people behind closed doors recently, and it was able to run that Matrix tech demo for Unreal Engine 5 that came out a bit ago.

No one has ever claimed a next gen switch was never happening, the big annoyance has been the constant insistence of a better version being right around the corner since essentially day one because people just couldn't find the hadware acceptable.
I think the one thing that felt like a huge clue like, "oh switch is nearing it's end." was the sizzle reel at the end where it was like, "Let us show you all the games coming to the switch!" Like it felt like, "Yea this is the last year for the switch."

I didn't expect King Gizzard to come up. I also got into the band recently and while I don't like many of the fan favorites, they've still got some nifty music. Magenta Mountain and Candles are the most delicious songs on the album.

the large increase in remakes, remasters, and ports makes me think that Nintendo is really trying to go hard on first party software before the end of the switch. their hardware sales have been going down for a few years now, and remakes are very easy ways to boost your profits without doing a lot of work or spending a lot of money (at least when compared to 100% new original games)

All I care about for the next gen whenever it happens is mandatory backwards compatibility for switch games currently out on the system. I got a pretty big collection of games and I'd like to keep as much as I can on one system.

I have the feeling that when Metroid Prime 4 was delayed and passed on to Retro, it’s also because they decided it would be for the next gen console instead. It makes sense, Metroid Prime is a FPS that can appeal to a broader gaming audience, it’s a great launching title for the next console.
Take note that after the second Zelda game it can be seen as an indicator of the end of the current Nintendo Era, and Tears can be a launch title for the new system like they did with Wii and Wii U.

Wow you weren't kidding, Magenta Mountain is hauntingly catchy.
People can become upset but you're completely right. I've had the feeling sink in since playing and loving Tears of the Kingdom. Breath of the Wild came out at the start of the Switch's life and showed me what the console was capable of, and I got that feeling again with Tears of the Kingdom - but at the other end of the Switch's life. TotK has definitely felt like a swan song for me, almost a completed picture of showing what the Switch can do after all the years of developing games for it. I was also a completely different person and at a completely different stage of my life between playing BotW and TotK, and playing TotK had me realise that a few times.
It's been 6+ years now since the Switch's release. So many games have come out on the Switch by now. I feel like I've played the main titles, let them become a part of me, and moved on from them, and it's been great. When I think of playing games like Breath of the Wild, Link's Awakening, Octopath Traveler, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Pokemon Shield, it doesn't feel like that long ago - until I realise it's already been years ago.
It also feels like a lot of the main title game developers for Nintendo are working on projects for the next console, and that a lot of the 'new' these future games can bring to the table is tied to the updated hardware of a new console. But that's just my impression.
I was first introduced to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard through the music theory channels discussing their exploration into the realm of microtonal music with the _Flying Microtonal Banana_ album. I've yet to hear the majority of their works, but _Rattlesnake_ was quite enjoyable.

The "Pro" Switch didn't happen for one simple reason. It would have needed an entirely new Nvidia chip and at that point you may as well just call it next gen. Right? What alternatives would they have had to pro it up... A little more RAM, more onboard storage? What's the actual point there. We aren't talking about bumping up the clock cycles (which Nintendo already considers maxed out for the battery performance trade off. Who wants a 1 hour battery?) People just PRESUMED because MS And Sony made mid-generation Pro versions of their consoles Nintendo would as well. Which they actually did in a very Nintendo way of the OLED and Lite models.
I’ll maintain that, barring rumors, it didn’t make sense to expect the next console coming this year, because it was very possible for Nintendo to fill out their lineup for longer. But yeah, after this direct, it’s pretty obvious
It reminds me of the 3ds' last games. Yoshi's Wooly World, Kirby's epic Yarn, Luigi's Mansion 1, Bowser's Inside Story, Mario Maker, etc. Almost all remakes, though in that case the switch had already been out for a couple years
Hey, all these remakes now are still more interesting to me now than all the Wii U ports that dominated the first half or three quarters of the Switch's life.
These games might be remakes, but they aren't games I just paid $60 for a few short years ago. An SNES remake, sure! GameCube ports? Why not, I haven't touched GameCube in several years. GBA remake? Yeah why not!
And we're still getting new games this year. More new games this year than I ever got during the Wii U port drought (and yeah I'm gonna call that a drought, I owned a Wii U, I played those games already, and Nintendo rarely had anything new for me)

I'm not so sure about it releasing next year, but there's a good chance. There's 2 strains of evidence we could go by.
1. The Switch was announced October 2016, and released March 2017. About half a year, so if the next console's announced this October, it might release early-mid 2024. However, the Wii U was a failed console, and Nintendo wanted to move on from that ASAP, so that might be why it had a hasty launch.
2. The Wii U on the other hand was announced April 2011, and released November 2012. A year and a half, so if the next console's announced this October, it might release early 2025! Keep in mind that the Wii U followed on from the Wii, and Nintendo wanted to keep the hype from the Wii alive as long as possible, hence the eventual slow launch.
There's a good chance it might release middle of next year if announced soon, but I'd say there's a bigger chance of it releasing around 2025 just cause of how much hype the Switch has generated. Hopefully I'm wrong and we'll see a 2024 release, but it's hard to get that excited when the evidence points to a 2025 release, of a console that probs won't do as well as the Switch.

I was at walmart yesterday and a majority of the games are now less than the 60 dollar price. It confused me because Nintendo basically never drops their prices.
Wal Mart has been doing that for ages on Switch games (since like 2028), -10 USD (or % equivalent on cheaper games) vs. list. I saved a bunch of money on new releases b/c of this, shame you're only finding this now

Speculating on the next console never really bothered me. I think it was fun and the pro most likely was going to come out if a certain thing didn't happen. The stuff that annoys me is the baseless claims that people will make and state as fact (mostly poketubers) It just spreads misinformation and makes people upset when the thing that should be obvious didn't happen.

Before the September direct I was very much “I will believe it when I see it”, then the direct happened and it just felt like a final year direct for a Nintendo console.
We don't have a single new game for the holiday. That is unheard of, except in the event of a new system on the brink of release.
I think the people who are in denial at this point are mostly the teenage crowd, who haven't witnessed generation after generation of console lifecycle patterns.

I remember the Spaceworld 2000 Link/Ganondorf fight preceeding the Gamecube, and the giant Zelda spider trailer coming out ahead of the Wii
Until something big like that drops, that looks like something the current hardware *can not handle* I don't think I'll buy into anything, especially after how many times "Switch Pro" was paraded around this site.

I could see a new hardware announcement coming before/during April. Nintendo's financial year ends on March 31st, and if they are at all confident about their next console, I think they'll start releasing some details before then to get some end/start of (the financial) year excitement going with their shareholders.
I am not an expert on this, I barely know anything about business, but I feel like this makes the most sense based on my very limited knowledge

Pikmin 4. The Joy-Cons are treasures you can collect in the game, and they’re part of the “Newly Nostalgic” collection. Newly nostalgic. As in, a thing of the past, perhaps somewhat recently. Why would they call the system the game launched on, Nintendo’s current generation, nostalgic unless they had something else cooled up and almost ready to serve?

To throw some more speculation on the next system based off what we've seen: Tears of the Kingdom to me is undeniable proof that the system will be backwards compatible, perhaps with enhancements on some of Nintendo's more important bigger games like Sony and Microsoft have done. With the next system obviously being so close, it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't delay their big Zelda that's been years in the making another year to do another simultaneous current gen + next gen release like they did with TP and BotW. And they're also not going to just not have a big Zelda on the system for several years until the next one is done, and they're ALSO ALSO not going to make people buy another copy of TotK for the new system a year after release. The system HAS to play Switch games. I expect a pretty similar formfactor to the Switch because of it. They can't abandon the home console + portable hybrid at this point.

My one concern is that (unless it’s just gonna be a Switch 2) I have no clue what big feature they could add that would justify a new console. Every modern Nintendo console has had some sort of hook that makes the games made for it unique. The Wii had it’s motion controls, the DS family had two screens, with the 3DS having actual 3D visuals, and the Wii U had… two screens again. I can’t really think of anything that they could add to their next console that would be worth while. The Switch has motion controls, HD rumble, coverage for home and handheld use, NFC reading, a touch screen, and whatever that camera/sensor under the controller is. You could add a second screen, but the Wii U had already demonstrated why that isn’t necessary. You could bring back 3D, but that was always a supplementary feature, not something that added significant differences. I’m just kinda hoping the next console is an upgraded, ironed out Switch.
Imagine 3 years into the lifetime of Switch2, they finally release the Switch Pro. Not Switch2 Pro, but the Switch Pro that has been rumored all these years.

That's super unlikely. Hardware revisions released after their successors are usually budget models like Game Boy Micro or New 2DS XL.

I felt like the very hard push to pre-order all the early 2024 games now was a good indicator as well. After all, what could /possibly happen/ between now and early 2024 that might make someone hold off on a purchase? Getting people to pre-order now means you don't have them sitting there at launch saying "eh, I'll just wait on the Switch 2 to play that."
This is purely based on ‘vibes’, but i think Nintendo is gearing up to do something similar to what MS/Sony did, where they put out a new console, but spend a year or two supporting both consoles. For better or worse, I think the next console will be more or less a stronger switch, but will have a year or so where all games are released on both. So I do think there is significant work being done on new switch games, but I think they are waiting for a Switch 2 reveal (or whatever less intuitive name they slap on it…) to reveal the new games.
Its the Nintendo Portable lifecycle. New System, 2 years, Lite System, 2 years, Premium System. 2-4 years, Repeat
Something you didn't mention that suggests the Switch successor is coming is some details of games revealed in the September Direct. The TTYD remakes colors the button prompts like the SNES, something you don't see with the current Switch. There is also the significant upgrades to Peach's model in PP Showtime (even compared to Wonder and SMRPG) suggesting it is meant for higher resolution. While these will be available on Switch, I believe they will also be some of the first games available for what comes next. Why would they color the button prompts for a remake of a Gamecube game like an SNES game? Why would they upgrade Peach's model if not that her game will be on a more powerful system where the upgrades will be noticed?

@kellyrousseau3839 I doubt they will be re-using the _super_ brand, Nintendo tends to adopt a brand, use it for some time and then abandon it (in some way they use their brands to indicate the timeframe when something was released).
They named "Super" to many games released in the SNES (like Super Mario Kart, Super Punch Out, Super Metroid, and even third parties doubled down with Super Castlevania IV, Super Double Dragon, Super Bomberman, Super Ghouls n' Ghosts or Super Star Wars), they named 64 to many Nintendo 64 games, they named DX to Gameboy Color games, Advance to GBA games, DS to NDS games, they also used the prefix "new" for a lot of games released around the same time, or the suffix 3D for 3DS games.
With Wii and Wii U they still used the brand Wii, and the brand U for naming some of their games (but with more moderation than before). With the Switch they have barely used the brand to name games, however they have used the brand for naming other stuff in their ecosystem.
