I understand the issue with cartridges, but I'm hoping Nintendo never goes fully digital. Physical copies of any media, movies, TV shows, and games, are important for preserving them, good or bad, for future generations. Also, backwards compatibility is absolutely necessary to stay ahead of their competitors offering past gen games on current gen consoles for free.

Considering we are in a similar situation it wouldn't be hard to believe they would take a similar path. The DS was extremely popular and is one of the best selling consoles. It was a revolutionary console for having 2 separate screens with one being touch. It ammases a huge library of games and large player base. The next handheld comes along and they just add to the formula with a 3d screen and better performance while also allowing backwards compatibility so all those players have a reason to upgrade.
However since the switch is the first console in a long time (gamecube for consoles, and the gameboy for portable) to not offer any sort of backwards compatibility, though unlikely due to the continued use of cartridges and is likely to be similar to the switch (with some little gimmick to entice upgrading), they could have started down a road that would lead to the end of backwards compatibility.

Regarding cartridge usage: a huge problem with any optical media is that it’s incredibly prone to skipping if it’s jostled. CD players solved this in the early 2000s by reading data into memory so that, in the event of a jostle, it can detect and read from the buffer, thus preventing skips. However, in an audio CD, you can do this more easily; after you play the data for seconds 1-3, you’re going to need the data for seconds 4-6, so it’s easy to know what you need to load into memory. It’s a bit more difficult with a video game - the game doesn’t know what data you’re going to be accessing ahead of time, so it’s harder to know what to buffer. Optical media on a portable system may require increased load times to buffer more data, or increased costs for fast internal memory so more data can be buffered throughout / it can be loaded more quickly. Part of the expense of cartridges has been that flash memory prices were incredibly high through late last year due to shortages. As that’s calmed down, it seems likely that Nintendo’s next system will be able to offer larger bucket sizes for cartridges (anticipating an absolute max of 256gb which rarely if ever gets used) at the same if not better prices as the Switch’s lower capacity cartridges.

There should also be more apps available, like Facebook and Netflix and so on.

These rumors seem to be based on dev units, so I think it is possible the new system has an OLED screen but that would not be needed for a dev unit which can be made with a cheaper, but similar lcd panel.
Nintendo has supported B/C more than any other game console maker so I am confident they will support it on the new console too, but again this isn’t necessary for a developer model console.

Hey Arlo, the Switch Pro wasnt actually cancelled or planned. Insiders passed along info that a new Nvidia Tegra chip was in production, which coincided very well with production of a new dock and model (the OLED dock and SWOLED). The dock specs in particular led to analysts believing that this was a full Switch Pro and not a minor hardware revision as the OLED dock has upgraded display out to support 4K 60 signal output to 4K TVs. So the reporters put all this info together, and not unreasonably speculated that the SWOLED was actually a Switch Pro with an upgraded Tegra chip. It was a case of slightly poor interpretation of the available data than an actual cancellation of the Switch Pro

He set up their workstations and internal network (he never worked on the games) He went in one day to do some regular routine maintenance, installing a new workstation for a new hire. The head of the company walked up to him and said "do you want to see the PS5" (This was before it was announced publically). Obviously, IT guy said yes and was led to a PC tower with custom hardware inside (the dev kit). The head of a major AAA developer wasnt even trying to hide the fact that a PS5 was near to being announced.

the switch pro rumor is interesting because, like... it's basically all but confirmed that it was in development at one point before getting scrapped. Jason Schreier, probably one of the most reputable folks in the biz, had multiple sources indicating that multiple AAA studios received 4k Switch dev kits.
Also as for that question of who gets this insider info, there's one really interesting tactic that Bandai Namco has been using since at least Soul Calibur 5's development cycle back in 2010-2012, if not earlier, one that I would not be surprised if Nintendo and other Japanese companies have picked up on: Lying!
This plays out in two ways, but there's one that's actually relevant here. During development of Soul Calibur 5, a lot of independent contractors consulting on the game were purportedly told that it was cool if they leaked info, but only on the condition that they had to mix in false info.
The other, less relevant method is one that Katsuhiro Harada personally used during development of Tekken 7's DLC: he would put together fake DLC lineups, and give them to people who he was concerned would leak, and who didn't need to know the actual DLC lineup. Each person would get a different fake lineup, so he could easily trace leaks back to people
And I think that approach - of knowing that leaks will happen, but trying to make sure false info gets mixed in - is actually a really smart tactic. I think they recognized pretty early on - *years* before today's leak culture emerged - that having some leaked info that turns out to be true builds hype, having others turn out false would help preserve that hype by retaining an element of uncertainty, and you can even have stuff that hasn't been finalized get included as if it were true as a way to gauge interest.

The Switch 2 won't be able to play Switch 1 Games with better performance, that's only something a port can do.
The Switch 2 will likely solve backwards compatibility by adding 3 or 4 ARM Cortex 57 Cores (the one the Switch 1 used) and play Switch games on these, just like they just added the GBA CPU to the DS and added the DS CPU to the 3DS.
Switch 1 Games are not programmed to use Switch 2 Hardware, they don't even try to access it. Games made for Switch 1 will perform the same on Switch 2. DS games which lag also lag on the 3DS for the same reason

Yes to physical media (pro game conservation)
Yes to backwards compatibility with Switch (big library from launch)

Regards backwards compatibility you could 1) Emulate the basic version via proprietary emulation 2) Provide Free first party patches for "4K" versions of the same game which provide smoother framerate and 4K resolution visuals. 3) Allow third parties to do an "upgrade" via patch but give them an option to charge and be scummy if they want to. The cartridge is a sticky situation, the best compromise is that you allow third parties to just do the thing of using the cheapest 8GB cart and then the rest of it downloads {shrugs} or the least likely subsidise developers so they pay for an 8GB cart while Nintendo pays for the difference for certain publishers, I dunno. It's a tough situation. If you go all digital you then have a backwards compatibility issue and then you have to quadrupole that 128GB storage you're predicting to make all digital worthwhile.

10:08 This comment was about playing backwards compatible games instead of next gen ones. I don't think whoever said this didn't think of people who buy re-released games they already had but for the newer system. The group who does that is such a small minority that publishers probably don't care. What I think they meant is new next gen games needing to compete against the catalogue of games people already own or popular Switch titles that are probably cheaper and so make people less eager to buy new next gen titles.
The release window of a console is a golden opportunity to sell a game people otherwise might not buy. Now they will buy it since the options are just so limmited. Imagine you publish a platformer with next gen graphics, something akin to Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Maybe the mechanics aren't that exciting. But it's the hot new thing that looks cool on the improved hardware. That would sell like crazy in the early release of the new console when people are hyped about what the machine is capable off. But not so much if you could also play Mario Odyssey or Kirby and the Forgotten World on the same console. Then you need to compete against a very safe bet for a first game to play on the new console.

    • @zodayn
      @zodayn ปีที่แล้ว +1

It would be benefitial to both Nintendo and 3rd party publishers if the next gen consolse wasn't backwards compatible. Since Nintendo would be able to sell its biggest hits again for full price to new customers or even for the next gen upgrade to existing consumers. While 3rd party publishers would feel safe that they don't have to compete against the first party heavy hitters. For Nintendo the choice to make is mostly about early wins vs late wins. A backwards compatible console is more attractive since a large group already has tons of games they can play on it. This makes it sell better at launch but worse later on. Whereas no backwards compatibility makes it less attractive at launch but could result in better profits for rereleased games. Which makes me think that if Nintendo is confident in this console's selling power they would leave backwards compatibility out, but if they think it's not as big a sales monster they might have to include it. And by the sounds of it the thing is just a more powerful Switch. And a more powerful console that is basically just another Switch but with hardly any games on it doesn't sound like it would sell that amazingly well.
So my bet in on it being backwards compatible. Which is good for most every gamer. I'd love to see TotK run in say 1440p or whatever. But there's downsides too. It also means MK8 is still playable which would mean there isn't gonna be an MK9 for even longer still.

The thought of only having digital games is terrifying. Just look at what Ubisoft has done where they close people's accounts and in the process steal all the Ubisoft games those people bought. Lack of backwards compatibility can be okay (especially since we all own Switches already), but digital-only would be horrible.

On the cartridge thing, I've heard on a forum that there's apparently some new tech to increase cart sizes and decrease cost. Don't recall exactly where I heard that, could be full of it but who knows. ALSO: the most exciting thing about this to me is that if this is true, it kindddda gives even more credibility to those nvidia gpu leaks a while back, where it seems like the next system will be more of a straight upgrade to the current one. As mundane as that sounds, as a Nintendo fan, it's just incredibly exciting to me because it means that for once, they're sticking with a concept that works and improving on it instead of cutting corners on hardware and going for some kind of novelty that may or may not work out in the long run. It's just, I think they're in a really good spot with this hybrid concept, because having their handheld and home console divisions combined makes the game output so much more palpable imo. If they don't add on some kind of expensive gimmick, this is probably set to be the biggest hardware bump since Wii to Wii U.

Unlike Xbox and PlayStation where the CD is just a glorified Key needed to download the 100GB game rather than holding actual game data in it, Nintendo still puts most of the game data on the cartridge itself which makes buying physical better imo.

  • @BenBoyee
    @BenBoyee ปีที่แล้ว

Okay, so I know I'm gonna be wrong about this because I feel this kind of thing would be too good to be true, but this is what I'd love for the next console.
A similar setup to the switch in the sense of it being portable, but instead of having to be plugged into the dock, the console can stream either directly to the television or directly to the dock which then displays it on the television. The dock would have a disk drive, and the console itself would have a card reader for switch games. This means you could play one of three ways, handheld, docked, or a wii-u-esque "mixed" mode. The console would be called "Nintendo Mix"
It would be compatible with joy-cons as well as their successors, which would be basically beefier joy cons. Sticks, buttons and triggers similar to Sony and Microsoft's offering. (Though knowing Nintendo, I doubt they'd move on from the type of buttons they used previously unless they shifted their focus on games that would need/benefit from analog triggers) the dock would either have a sensor bar built in or something similar so that way the new-cons could have wiimote-esque pointer capabilities.
The console would be more powerful than the switch, but not by much. It'd be closer to a PS4 than a PS5, since we've got those to compare. Nintendo has been more about squeezing the best out of limited hardware from the wii era onward.
Online would be better, but not by much. The online infrastructure would be overhauled for newer games whilst switch games would keep the same online before being phased out or transferred over to the new online. Since Nintendo is dying on that drip-feed hill, they'd be keeping the NSO retro console shtick. For this fantasy console, I posit they'd add Wii or GameCube to it, alongside DS games.
There's my fantasy console. Wonder if any of that will be there or if the kings of left field will work their wacky out-of-nowhere trickery again. Let's revisit this comment in a year or two to find out.

Backwards compatibility would help push NSO subscriptions. Not only would it give even new adaptors a massive library day one, just by signing up and getting the retro stuff, but being able to transfer your cloud saves up might be enough to entice any holds outs to the service. They can still be conniving and greedy and give the feature to us.

If they were really concerned about cost cutting measures, they'd keep the same format for their next console - that's something you wouldn't have to worry about. The cartridges are small enough to not be overly intrusive, and because of the continual development of flash memory capacity over the years, they could actually make cartridges that are the same size and shape, but are a higher capacity, without having to spend a higher amount (assuming that manufacture costs have dropped, as they should have).
I do agree that the next console needs a bigger drive storage (because the size of games IS going up, whether Nintendo likes it or not).
The Tegra chipset needs replacing with something more powerful. Sure, it still surpasses the PS3, by a lot (nearly 5x allegedly), but now they should be aiming for something more comparable to the PS4. Mobile technology has come on leaps and bounds since the introduction of the Tegra X1 back in 2015, and I imagine even a mobile processor that would be considered outdated now (IE, not being super expensive to implement), aught to be able to deliver that. The Switch's successor should be aiming to match - or surpass - any machine in the 8th Generation. I would argue matching the XBox One X might be a little difficult in a form factor so small, but at the very least it should aim for surpassing the PS4 Pro's 4.2TFlops.
They also know they have to be careful with system cooling, because whatever they have in the base model Switch isn't good enough for stronger components (as we've seen from the odd person having cases that broke due to overheating).
My concern is that catching up to the end of the 8th Gen might set the next console a bit more expensive than the Switch was at launch. It does not need to compete with the 9th Gen at all in terms of power, as we've seen Nintendo do very well with underpowered machines, but they can't keep cutting the budget forever if they want to keep getting good 3rd party support.

If it doesn't have BC I'll be kinda relieved that I can wait for a mid-gen model.

I don’t think they would announce a non-backwards compatible console after all the major releases this year and next

If they're basically doing the Switch again for the next console, and it's even using cartridges again, they have no genuine excuse not to include backwards compatibility with Switch games

Cartridges are a must as the idea of gifting a friend or family member a Nintendo game is huge! As opposed to the more adult focused consoles where digital gifting makes more sense

I really wish Nintendo would start competing on specs again. Don't tell me that they never did, because I know for a fact that they did. N64 was the best console on the market at the time, and was only hampered by the low amount of RAM and no optical drive. Had it had a CD drive and decently big RAM, it would dominate that generation. Same with Gamecube, it still was one of the best consoles that generation (better than the Dreamcast), but was beaten by PS2, because, just like Dreamcast, it didn't have an extra function of playing DVDs. Then the Wii happened, an underpowered system that somehow did very well due to gimmick controls, and they started to release crap consoles.
But yeah, if they start competing on specs+having the power of their amazing first-party titles, I think we would have a generation winner on our hands.

The legacy content part of the article gave me hope that we will get backwards compatibility but I wouldn’t get nervous because there was a reason we never had it in the first place

If they stuck with the pixel density of a switch lite "beautiful crisp screen" but on a regular switch2 screen size then added a couple more notches of Brightness Max.. I'll be Happy

Portable consoles are, theoretically, capable of similar power to a gaming PC. The steamdeck actually runs alot of intensive triple a games REALLY well, so if Nintendo steps up their game to steamdeck standards, it's possible we could still get better graphics and fps and all that good stuff.
    Probably won't happen though lmao
