It's actually crazy that it's been 4 YEARS since it came out. I remember that original trailer for it, the January conference, and the hype. What a great time; I kinda miss it.
same, I used to use it docked all the time but due to how my family shares the TV I now don't bother connecting the switch and I just lay down on the couch to play handheld
@@damiankaleomontero496 bro same my brother shares the same TV for his xbox one and my switch, so I mostly play handheld while he’s playing. But when he didn’t have the xbox one, I was on the TV all the time
I used to do both, then mostly handheld, then mostly docked, and now I’m back to both usually if I’m playing fire emblem I’m in handheld and If I’m playing smash it’s on the tv
@@juice3287 when someone has a bunch of games from throughout the lifetime of the console they bought that they want to play that they can't play because they have too many games to play or other reasons
Funny, all I do is handheld now. That has to do with my current living situation, but I also find it so much easier to look at! Handheld DOESN’T hurt my eyes ;)
Same for me! I've always been a handheld person ever since the original gameboy, so i kinda grew into liking handhelds way more than the big screen experience. Thats why the switch really is my favourite console of all time, as i get to experience all the games even as a handheld guy!
Personally, I've barely ever played on my Switch in handheld mode. It's convenient sometimes, but I just don't feel super inclined to take the Switch with me places when I'm traveling alone. For my money, it's all about the tabletop mode. Playing fully-featured Mario Kart, Mario Maker, Smash Bros. games (etc) on the go with friends who don't even have the console will never cease to be awesome.
After getting a pro controller, I almost never use handheld mode because the joycons are uncomfortable and drift. Also tabletop mode works great with pro controller
I've played in handheld mode more than TV mode for convenience. Plus, it's easier to turn off or reset the system that way. I can't believe they never made it so you can turn it off or reset it using the sleep mode app, which should've been a power app. I can understand sleep mode is better for things like background downloads and updates, but I don't want it on all the time when docked!
As a teenager when you can't play on a tv because someone else is or when you have to go on a long drive it's useful for handheld. I usually play handheld anyways though
@@nathanielmalikgan5527 Me too. I currently own a Satisfye grip and mini grip. And yes, I've even upgraded to the more ergonomic improved grip they released months later and gave the other one to my brother.
I absolutely require the handheld mode. I'm in my mid 30s and I work a lot so I don't really have as much time to play any games on the TV or monitor. But I have at least an hour a day on lunch at work where I can chill and play the switch.
Well I mean it's obvious they somehow both managed to have the greatest catalog of games ever on a handheld system. And the most pultry amount of features on anything ever. I think a toaster might have more features, but we all should know that by now really.
my bias against the switch is at peak. it’s 4 freaking years old, where’s the switch 2? the wii u was the same age when it got replaced and robbed of games by the eccentric toddler who’s legs don’t work probably after 5 months
Interestingly, I've found that I play handheld almost exclusively now. Much easier for me to click it on, play for a little bit and switch off. Plus, I don't want to drag the dock with me everywhere I go so handheld has been my go-to

They wont ever fix it. They will just pretend it doesnt exist and fix it for in warranty joy cons. They dont wanna get sued if they actually admit it is an issue. It’s unfortunate as joy cons are not cheap. I havent had any issues with my pro controller though and it seems they drift way less than the joycons.
if you have drift, just change the joystick yourself, its very simple, one tutorial later and i can do it like a pro, clearly nintendo won't do anything about it, in fact the drift just gives them more joycon sells cause you have to buy more. so yeah just get the replacement kit on amazon, watch spawn waves tutorial and boom. your joycons are in full force again.
@@chickennugget6684 if they had the cure they would cure it. I think at this point they’re focusing on other things and just sticking with the free fix thing
Because the switch was my first Nintendo home console, when I'm at home I almost never use it in handheld but I used it a lot when on the road for vacation, long car trips, or generally when I was outside, because of that, I didn't really use it handheld last year , but it is something I really appreciate about the switch since it makes it really easy to bring with me when I go out for vacations.
As a 16 year old with no TV in my room, my Switch is basically a handheld console. When I'm playing alone I'm playing on handheld. When I have friends over or am playing with my family we play with the TV, but because the time I have to play video games is usually when my family is home the TV is being used by them, thus I can not use the Switch. I also went from a mobile player to a Switch player so for me even though I've had my switch for almost 3 years I have no issue with its lack of power because its better than anything I've ever had.
I've got a big family at home, so when we're all playing together it's docked. But when I want to dive 4 more hours into whatever RPG it is I'm vibing at the time, I almost exclusively play handheld mode so as to avoid capitalizing the TV from everybody else. I don't even take the switch out with me often because when you're out that usually means your busy, but I've got the thing next to me like a 2nd phone whenever I'm home.
Exactly, the real value for me is portability within the home. I even go on many long vacations and still don't take it with me. But when I'm home I'm playing it in any one of several different locations around the house.
In hardware comparison, the switch is a little more powerful than a ps3, and less powerful than a ps4. Imagine playing Mario with graphics of a ps4. 3D Zelda in 4K resolution. In my eyes though Nintendo will always be behind on hardware, they're the cheaper option with more family friendly titles than, let's say Xbox with Halo. But with the Wii U hiccup, they have to play catch-up.
I actually hope they don’t. I would love to see Nintendo’s attempt at a real next-gen console. Something powerful, something to compete with other systems. The Super Nintendo was very much a direct competitor to the Genesis in terms of hardware specs and was actually greater in certain areas. They dropped the ball with the N64 and it’s been downhill since. I love Nintendo, but they need to stop with the gimmicks.
When I had roommates, I played my Switch primarily in handheld. Now that I'm in my own, admittedly small, gaming setup, I mostly played docked. If I wanna do something quick, like check in on my Animal Crossing island, I do handheld. Though now that I finally jumped on the 3DS train (I bought one last year for my birthday. In September) I've been playing that more than the Switch. There's so many great games I misses out on. It's weird to think that the Switch is getting old since I only picked one up 2019 and only had time to really play it in 2020. Like the 3DS these experiences are still new to me.
3ds is what i acknowledge as nintendo’s best handheld since you don’t need to spend enough to buy a new game every year on new pieces of plastic that also inevitably drift.
Glad you are getting into the 3DS, my favorite console ever. I really enjoy the 3D effect and the dual screen, in terms of features I often prefer the 3DS over anything else. So many great games, If you allow me I recommend you try kid icarus uprising and of course any of the zelda games
@@diegog1853 I don't mind at all. Though I said 3DS, I have the Hylian Shield 2DS. Funny enough, the main reason I decided to pick one up is to play all The Legend of Zelda games. I'm playing through Minish Cap right now, actually. Kid Icarus Uprising is definitely on the back log!
I wasn't a nintendo fan in particular, I've almost strictly played on my pc my entire life but the actual selling point of the switch, the thing that made me buy the console were the 1st party nintendo releases. Nintendo makes great games, as soon as I saw the trailer for breath of the wild i was like "I have to play this game", so I bought the switch and haven't regretted my decision since. I'm not the type of guy who brings his switch everywhere he goes, don't get me wrong, I like the fact that you have the option of going portable if you prefer to do so, but I mostly play on my switch while I'm at home.
Tbh, with what the competition is showing I'm still completely fine with the graphics. You'd be hard press to find any bad looking 1st party games on it.
Does pokemon count as 1st party? Cause SwSh and BdSp look horrendous, though they're definitely the exception and not the rule. MK8, Luigi's Mansion, Bayo, Xenoblade, Astral Chain and Smash look amazing.
@@TheAlibabatree I'm not OP, but I waited until Animal Crossing came out because I knew it would happen eventually. If I really wanted to play something, I could use my boyfriend's Switch, but I had games I still wanted to play on my 3DS so I could wait.

I know that there’s technically a “lifetime” for most consoles, but I don’t really think the switch is gonna fall into that category completely. It takes the success and benefits of the wii and DS eras, and both the company and consumers realize that. To the point where they would be hesitant to cut support for the switch without a way to carry everything from this generation to the next through an upgrade, or even cut support at all. And the consumers would see that anything that loses what we already have is a downgrade and would probably be less likely to buy a new console, making most new moves failures. So they either lose consumers if they don’t have some huge amount of innovation that would make the switch obsolete or they continue to support switch hardware indefinitely My money’s on supporting the switch, as this console is the most steadily growing (rather than occasional spikes like with wii and ds) and will likely continue to sell well since the popularity is only growing. They will probably sell an upgraded version or two, and probably try to introduce peripherals in place of their usual new console innovations, but they will at the very least continue to support game development and sales on the switch and eshop. The wii only lost it since the switch made it practically obsolete, so unless we get something that comes with the switch benefits, it’s games, and adds new benefits as well, there will be no way or reason that they will truly end the switch, whether it’s been 7 years, 14 years, or more
Looking back, the Switch has had an exciting four years in terms of games. It’d be nice if we got some significant changes to the menus and features too, but I guess you get what you get. At least we got button mapping, but I’m still waiting for Netflix.
I've had my Switch for a little over a year and it still excites me every time I turn it on. Surprisingly I have had no problems with joycon drift at all but I did have a problem where one of my joycons didn't connect to the console at one point that lasted for months before I decided to just send it in. I have a crazy backlog as well which is one of the wonderful problems of being a gamer that I'm running into for the first time. I'm looking forward to the future of this system and all the experiences I'll have with it in the coming years.
Why is everyone so focused on the Switch only lasting 7-ish years? They initially said they wanted it to go 10 years. Why can't we keep that number alive?
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch did last some 8-9 years at least. After all, the Switch is technically in the same console generation as PS5 and Xbox Series X, even if it usually gets lumped into the same gen as PS4, Xbox One and Wii U. There would probably be a hardware update in that case, but it might well be that we won't be getting a true Switch successor until late 2025.
People are stupid. They are too fixed on console generations being 7 years and got to used to phones updating EVERY year or 6 months. Completely different markets. I think this will be like the 3ds...8 or 9 years... but watch the new system be so different that the switch will have PS2 style staying power
It's because nintendo has officially said that the switch is at the middle point in it's lifespan. I think 8 years is more likely than 7, but I would love for it to survive longer than that.
@@Matanumi the 3ds lasted a while but it had revisions I feel like everyone just wants Nintendo to stick with the switch brand with like new slightly better versions
Overall, the Switch has some incredibly apparent issues like Joycon Drift, anything even REMOTELY related to Switch Online, and problems with Nintendo as a company... ... but 4 years in the Switch era somehow still feels like a blur, compared to 4 years in the Wii U era
Joycon drift is definitely a problem, but their online has gotten better. Nintendo as a company is still a lot better than other companies and I feel like a lot of the hate they’ve gotten late last year was a bit unwarranted
I'm actually almost always in handheld mode. It makes it easier when I'm on short car rides somewhere, or when I want to play laying on my side in bed rather than propping my head up and laying on my back. It's been really handy to play more comfortably
Happy fourth! I always look forward to these videos every year from everyone. Addressing some of your main points: Joycon drift is still an absolute pain, but I've found it to be well worth it to invest in a few Joycon sticks and the tiny screwdriver you need to take the Joycons apart. My advice is to make sure to buy a screwdriver separately from the Joycons since the ones that come with "Joycon replacement kits" on eBay tend to be cheaply made to the point where they can strip the Joycon screws (which also seem to be made as cheaply as the rest of the Joycon's components). You'll also want to take it slow and maybe take some pictures of the Joycons to have a record of how all the ribbon cables and other parts need to connect. Outside of that, it's fairly straightforward replacing the stick and once you've done it enough, you can go through the process in no time at all if/when you need to replace the stick multiple times. As far as general Switch use, I still feel I'm 50/50 between playing docked and handheld. There are some games I play exclusively docked (Smash Bros, Mario Odyssey), some games I play exclusively handheld (Animal Crossing, basically all indie games), but most others off the top of my head I play however is most convenient for me at the time. That's the one thing about the Switch I don't think will ever change: the hybrid nature of the system allows you to play exactly how you want and that flexibility will always make the Switch a fantastic gaming platform. That being said, I've honestly been incredibly underwhelmed by the power of the Switch since 2017. It started off on an incredibly high note: I still remember the very first time playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe after having logged in dozens of hours across my Wii U and playing on friends' consoles. Playing 8 Deluxe handheld for the first time and just having that formerly Wii U exclusive experience fully contained in what's essentially an extremely slimmed down Wii U Gamepad I can take everywhere was when the Switch "magic" really hit me hardest and had me believing we could truly have uncompromised console quality experiences on the go. Then I played DOOM 2016 on it that exact same year and was completely disgusted with how it played handheld. Every TH-camr couldn't stop singing its praises, but I personally found it to be borderline unplayable handheld. It was better when docked, but at that point, I'd rather play it on any other console.
For me, I almost exclusively use my switch handheld, I think you hit the nail right on the head by saying that its all because of where you are in life. Great vid man!
Yup. Haven't played in handheld in a year. Haven't played Okami in a year. Can't quick roll anymore in Odyssey. Haven't been willing to buy Ring Fit, the only game I've wanted in forever, because I'd have to buy new Joy-Cons to play it, and there's no indication anything has been changed or fixed so they're likely to last a year or so and start drifting. Those things are $70-$80. It's really blood-boiling. Is there a class-action yet?
Wow, the Switch came out my freshman year of high school. Now it’s almost time for me to head off to college. I...I just want to say thank you Nintendo, for helping me through these years 😊
I almost always play on held hand. My whole family uses the tv and I never get to use it. And when I do get the chance to, I’m just used to using it in handheld.
Thanks for doing this video even though your studio is still getting ready. You work hard to be so prolific, and that’s why you’re my only gaming channel I watch regularly. Don’t stress, you’re doing great!
I'm the opposite to you, I used to play 100% on the tv and now I play like 40% tv 60% handheld. It is so practical to get it to bed or to visit someone and play in their house or during a trip.
My own Switch came home a year and a half ago, and play time has been pretty much shared between modes. For the last few months I've been playing mostly tabletop, so handheld's still very important for me. Then again, I'm also in a weird place for docked play - there's only one TV in my house, so if I want to play anywhere that isn't the living room handheld's the way to go. Docked is really for down time, and a wonderful way to share what I play with my family. All in all, I still love my Swutch despite its flaws. It certainly helps that I haven't gotten any drift yet, probably because I so often use the Pro controller.
I dont have a tv in my room so the fact that the switch is handheld is suuuuper helpful and i almost only plan handheld mode (even during my classes on zoom lol)
there's a simple solution. you can buy the thumb pad on amazon and fix it manually or give to a repair shop so they can exchange it. I did it and was ok
I have the exact same feelings like you do, Arlo. The moment I got my paws on the PS5 I knew and felt, what I was missing lately when playing Switch and it makes the switch back to the Switch (^^) really hard... Playing games like God of War with 4K and 60fps with minimal load times feels so refreshing when comparing it to just having to load while entering a neighborhood house im Animal Crossing or stuttering in not even FHD in first party Nintendo titles.. we need the Switch Pro and we need it quick.
I think probably my favorite switch thing of the year is just how many old games got ports. Specially from the ps2 era, which is often not given much love. We got a bunch of star wars games, pretty much all the resident evils, devil may cry, doom 3. The switch brings me the perfect opportunity to play all these games that I never could or never had proper time to play them. I just need now star wars KOTOR or mass effect trilogy.
I know Capcom might be considering a Code Veronica remake for some point after Village and the RE4 remake, but I find it strange we don't have the HD version of Code Veronica on the Switch. As you said, we've gotten 0-6, Rev 1&2, and a cloud based version of 7 on the Japanese eShop, so why not CV? Hope we get the other Onimusha titles too. And if we're talking Capcom PS2 games that would be perfect on the Switch, Under The Skin.
@@realGeorgelucas18563 Totally, that's a good point, why don't we have code veronica. My guess is that capcom might feel that it hasn't aged as good as the others. I think that because we are also missing the original play station trilogy, which are not available anywhere. I know that we have remakes but they are so different. But final fantasy 7, 8 and 9 are there and are fine. Onimusha would be cool, specially since I haven't played them and I want to. I just want more old games lol, I'm glad that the early 3D games are now getting some love after the 8 bit and 16 bit craze
Just pick up some contact cleaner at Walmart. It's only $10-15, and one little spray will clear it right up! Just use the straw to lift up the rubber flap on the underside of the joystick- no need to even take it apart. Seriously, it takes five minutes, and one treatment will last you months! Plus, if it ever starts getting drifty again, just use the same bottle. It's fantastic! I've had great success with both pairs of my joycon, as well as my friend's!
I'm very much like you with my switch. backlog is full, ever since i'm locked up inside handheld use went down, and wanting more graphic fidelity has cropped up every now and then. but the best feature to me is, that due to it's insane portability, you can bring it to a friend's place and stick it into their dock (that sounds wrong) to play a game they haven't bought (or be like me and buy an unofficial, very small dock to take along), though that use has gone down significantly in the last year as well
I’ve owned my Switch for about 3 years now. I love playing handheld mode with the nice grips. I’d often loan the kids my switch & games, which turned permanent because of quarantine. Our library is almost entirely physical so we can swap back and forth. A few tiles I’ve had to buy twice since the kids love them so much. But I just can’t afford replacing the joy cons any more and have had to buy the more reliable pro controllers. I need to figure out how to repair the joy cons. With everything in life, I just don’t have the time to play like I used to. But it’s always nice to sit down and play with my sister & the kids, or just watch them play.
I've been playing on TV more than handheld as well so I'm feeling ya there. Also, thanks for the birthday video! That was literally the coolest thing ever and really made my day when my friend showed it to me!😊
Handheld was good and legitimately useful for the first 2 years or so. However, Joycon drift killed it for me. Now I mainly stick to the docked version using the pro controller. I really hope Nintendo gets their Joycons straightened out. Joycon drift is probably my #1 issue with the console.
Get the hori splitpad pro or some other off brand one, can't remember the name but look up joy on alternatives and you'll find it. I use those instead of the joy cons due to drift
I remember that feeling I felt in the end of the 1st year, I legitimately started hating the switch. Use the split pad pro, it's missing rumble but it has been a godsend. It also has alot of cool designs
A lot of people complain about joycon drift but I have never had that issue and I have owned 3 pairs of joycons. Even though I dont have drift I seem to get all of the other defects like pairing issues and buttons getting stuck in place of I dont use them for a while.
This heropon peaks the truth. I still find it hard to believe that BotW is capped at 30fps. 60fps in 4K on PC is so utterly gorgeous, it's offensive we don't possess it in our hands. Both Xenoblades are already the best looking games on Switch from art style alone! Imagine the improvements if Nintendo could push their power...
And still no themes, no folders, no changing layout (like 3DS), meh online, and a poor retro library :( I totally agree with performance issues. I’m tired of so many games dropping frames. I just want it to be 1080p 60 FPS potential, with capability for 30 FPS locked, with zero drops.
@@chickennugget6684 even Breath of the Wild, too. I’ve been playing it again recently and it’s always looking like ~25 FPS with frequent drops and patchy visuals.
It's funny you mentioned playing less on handheld, I got more into handheld play around the Switch's 2nd year. Another thing to mention is that I didn't play my Switch that much until Smash Ultimate came out. Finally picked up some games I missed early in the Switch's life and I can't wait to play some of them!
My backlog is absolutely massive. It started around 2012-2013, I think, when three games released all in the same week. This was also around the time I discovered social media, as well as the fact that I was making my own money, thus I would buy pretty much any game that I had even a passing interest in. Factor in the fact that I mostly play RPGs, have some completions tendencies, and likely have depression keeping me from even WANTING to play games most of the time (I haven't been officially diagnosed, but when your response to every slight inconvenience is "I hate being alive," there's probably something wrong), aaaaand...yeah, that backlog filled fast, and it's not going away anytime soon.
It baffels me how Nintendo keeps getting away with the whole Joycon Drift situation. I really hope they're made an example of in court so companies stop doing this kind of stuff
The Switch has become one of my favorite consoles I've ever owned. I bought it at the end of 2017 (mostly for Xenoblade 2, I admit), but now it's pretty much my default console for any game that comes out for it. I'm also not a stickler for resolution, so I'm not hurting for a Switch Pro or anything of the sort. Also, I've played it almost 95% of the time in docked mode, and that hasn't changed from 2017 to now. Happy birthday, Switch! Thank you for all the amazing memories!
i grew up playing ds, psp, 3ds, ps vita, and barely got into console gaming but always rlly wanted to play the big console games, its just difficult for me to play consoles cuz i’ve always done handheld so the switch has been perfect for me, and i use it probably a little more handheld but a pretty good amount docked, love being able to pick up and play in short bursts or longer amount of times and not really have to plan for it
Agree or disagree with me, but I would LOVE to see all of the older nintendo games in the e shop. Like Metroid Prime, Super Smash Bros Melee, and all of the other older hit games.
I definitely find that I prefer playing docked overall, but I love having the option to make it portable. Someone else needs the TV? Just take it out of the dock and keep playing! Going on a long trip in a bus or plane? Bring the switch! Going over to a friends place and want to play your games? Bring your switch and either play portably, or use their dock if they happen to own a switch too! Even if you want to bring the dock as well, it's so much more travel friendly compared to other consoles. Even if I haven't had the opportunity to utilize it's portability as much since covid, I adore having the option!
I remember watching the NX reveal event. The hype surrounding the reveal was unlike anything other console reveal. I stayed up until 5 in the morning to make sure I got a Nintendo Switch pre-order and it's still one of the best purchases I've made. That first year was insane, BotW, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, so many epic games back to back! I could never express how much I love the switch. Here's to another 4 years
the handheld feature of the switch is the one major seller of it for me. if it weren't handheld I wouldn't have one, and might not even be able to. for the last few years my living situations have been rocky as hell so it's a grace being able to carry my main gaming console around in order to have something to distract myself. it's basically a bigger 3ds with much MUCH better graphics, which is exactly what I need.
I EXCLUSIVELY use Handheld. I used docked a grand total of three times - in my first unboxing on Christmas Day, when I played Hollow Knight a few weeks after I got it, and one time at a family gathering (New Years 2020).
I primarily play my Switch in docked mode. I do a lot of travelling for work, and being able to have a full console that is this portable is what I like about it best. Handheld mode is a nice bonus from when I'm in flights or waiting at airports. I also have a huge backlog of games I still haven't played yet though, both physical and digital, despite being picky about what I purchase.
Can't believe that the switch is 4 years old. I still remember when I was begging to get it, and finally did get it in Christmas 2017. Those times were awesome, and I still adore my switch. I feel like when they announce the next Nintendo console, I almost won't want to part ways with it with how new it will feel. Despite how the actual company of Nintendo can be sometimes, their games are always the best in my opinion. Love it.
As time goes on, I like the switch less and less sadly. Probably because I was a WiiU owner and there just isnt any reason to buy those games for full price AGAIN, but yeah. I miss big new titles like from 2017-2019, especially surprising stuff like BotW, Odyssey and Mario+Rabbids
I mean, Animal Crossing and Paper Mario were fun last year. Im sure this year/next year will be better, with developers getting more used to the pandemic and all
@@owenmenning3878 I agree on Paper Mario, but Animal Crossing wasnt as "adictive" as previous entries for me because they just left out too much to keep me hooked for more than 100h, I could dunk 300+ into previous entries without a problem
I agree...I dont care or have the time for handheld gaming (especially with all the sacrifices of just gaming at home...which is usually where I am when I have free time lol). The lack of home menu features and online issues and lack of big new first and third party games that interests me...I dont love the switch really anymore.
2020 was an extremely dry year for Switch owners. 2021 isn't looking much better, although some admittedly major 3rd party releases are dropping this year (e.g. Shin Megami Tensei 5, 2 Monster Hunter games, Bravely Default 2).
I pretty much agree. My wishlist for switch pro to tide me over is 1080p 60fps for major titles, Bluetooth headphone support (aptx low latency), better screen (ideally 1080p oled edge to edge), Joycon fixes (drift, pressure sensitive shoulder buttons, grip handles included), Ethernet in the dock, and pair it with better online net code for games developed going forward. My wishlist for switch two is all of those changes, but even more power (4K 60fps / 1080p 120fps), 1080p 120hz screen, backward compatibility/upscaling, maybe drop the IR sensor, and make joycons 2 bigger/more ergonomic, but somehow are backward compatible with my old joycons.
I use it mostly in handheld mode. I just like to lay on bed or sit in some comfy chair and play games. My eyesight is not the best without glasses, but I can see things in front of me clearly, so playing in handheld is way better for me than TV mode. But I do use the TV mode, when we have a couch co-op party at home or at events... altough I've been closed up at my mom's house for half a year now. But it has been an amazing 4 years. I have way too many games for my Switch and I played a lot.. A LOT of them.

And thats why I dont play xbox anymore. Its just easier to play the switch and I can get way more comfortable with it than anything else.
@@Redbatcave same. That's why I play my switch more than my PlayStation. It's a lot more comfortable to play in hand held.
Same for me! I've always been a handheld person ever since the original gameboy, so i kinda grew into liking handhelds way more than the big screen experience. Thats why the switch really is my favourite console of all time, as i get to experience all the games even as a handheld guy!
Same! I don't have a good screen to play on and handheld is just convenient

Yup, still waiting on the Joy-con drift issue to get resolved. Really tired of my controllers getting it one-by-one.
It's like Arlo said 4 years in if it's not fixed yet that means they probably won't fix it

Basically same lol
You're a good kid.
You joined the good forces, thankfully you left the mobile gaming
I've got a big family at home, so when we're all playing together it's docked. But when I want to dive 4 more hours into whatever RPG it is I'm vibing at the time, I almost exclusively play handheld mode so as to avoid capitalizing the TV from everybody else. I don't even take the switch out with me often because when you're out that usually means your busy, but I've got the thing next to me like a 2nd phone whenever I'm home.
Exactly, the real value for me is portability within the home. I even go on many long vacations and still don't take it with me. But when I'm home I'm playing it in any one of several different locations around the house.

Can't imagine they wouldn't especially with how fast mobile technology evolves
In hardware comparison, the switch is a little more powerful than a ps3, and less powerful than a ps4. Imagine playing Mario with graphics of a ps4. 3D Zelda in 4K resolution.
In my eyes though Nintendo will always be behind on hardware, they're the cheaper option with more family friendly titles than, let's say Xbox with Halo. But with the Wii U hiccup, they have to play catch-up.
@@mr.awesome6011 Kinda doubt they will. Makes too much sense, and that's exactly why I doubt it.
@@Cheesehead302 Nintendoes what nintendont think we do
I actually hope they don’t.

So they either lose consumers if they don’t have some huge amount of innovation that would make the switch obsolete or they continue to support switch hardware indefinitely
My money’s on supporting the switch, as this console is the most steadily growing (rather than occasional spikes like with wii and ds) and will likely continue to sell well since the popularity is only growing. They will probably sell an upgraded version or two, and probably try to introduce peripherals in place of their usual new console innovations, but they will at the very least continue to support game development and sales on the switch and eshop. The wii only lost it since the switch made it practically obsolete, so unless we get something that comes with the switch benefits, it’s games, and adds new benefits as well, there will be no way or reason that they will truly end the switch, whether it’s been 7 years, 14 years, or more
I really like it when Arlo is critical of Nintendo! I am glad that he doesn’t just accept everything Nintendo does even when it’s wrong.

Man
“I’m not even paying for the game, I’m paying for the ability to not have to think about this decision anymore” I felt that
Happy fourth! I always look forward to these videos every year from everyone. Addressing some of your main points:
Joycon drift is still an absolute pain, but I've found it to be well worth it to invest in a few Joycon sticks and the tiny screwdriver you need to take the Joycons apart.
Man, time flies. I hate it.
Gotta go fast!

I stopped playing on handheld mode when I discovered joy-con drift.

But final fantasy 7, 8 and 9 are there and are fine.
Onimusha would be cool, specially since I haven't played them and I want to.
I just want more old games lol, I'm glad that the early 3D games are now getting some love after the 8 bit and 16 bit craze
Wait, it's been 4 years?! Holy cow!

If the Switch 2 isn't backwards compatible, I may die.
I wouldn’t even bother with their next console. backwards compatibility needs to be a must to grab my attention.
@@shadowsniper37 it all boils down to luck, but the failure for these things is too damn high
@@jello6845 I agree
Of all the 4 years of switch videos, this was my favorite! I live how Arlo just talks to us like we're friends having a coffee together :)
I personally exclusively play in hand-held mode as it is much more immersive to have the screen closer to my face.
I think it’s easy to think that the switch’s power isn’t enough anymore when the latest mainline mario game doesn’t even run at 60 fps in handheld.
And still no themes, no folders, no changing layout (like 3DS), meh online, and a poor retro library :(
I totally agree with performance issues. I’m tired of so many games dropping frames. I just want it to be 1080p 60 FPS potential, with capability for 30 FPS locked, with zero drops.
The Switch is the best console ever and the worst one of the century so far at the same time.
@@jadenmamangon9016 yup, it’s incredible, and also infuriating lol
can’t even run age of calamity at a better framerate than the original ocarina of time.
@@chickennugget6684 even Breath of the Wild, too. I’ve been playing it again recently and it’s always looking like ~25 FPS with frequent drops and patchy visuals.
@@chickennugget6684 wtf yes you can
Arlo. Handheld for me stopped being a thing when my second pair of joy-cons started drifting
Nothing makes me click lightning fast like an Arlo video
When is Arlo gonna have a muppets crossover, specifically at the game awards.
Its likely haha. Disney sure doesn't know what to do with the Muppets.

I'm still waiting for the video.
I’ve been waiting all day
I instantly got the reference 😂
Switch is half done? I feel like we've barely gotten first party titles on it
Agree or disagree with me, but I would LOVE to see all of the older nintendo games in the e shop.
Here's to another 4 years
I was the opposite--I started playing with docked mode 80% of the time, now I use handheld 80% of the time. I wonder why that is.
This makes me feel old .
wait it’s been four years already
the handheld feature of the switch is the one major seller of it for me. if it weren't handheld I wouldn't have one, and might not even be able to. for the last few years my living situations have been rocky as hell so it's a grace being able to carry my main gaming console around in order to have something to distract myself. it's basically a bigger 3ds with much MUCH better graphics, which is exactly what I need.
I EXCLUSIVELY use Handheld. I used docked a grand total of three times - in my first unboxing on Christmas Day, when I played Hollow Knight a few weeks after I got it, and one time at a family gathering (New Years 2020).
"My backlog is probably well over a hundred."
👀 *glares at the 400 games on my sd card*
how much storage is on your sd card lol what
Whew, I thought I was the only one.

“Oh woahhhhh! We’re halfway there! Oh-oh! Livin’ on a prayyyyer!
@@MrSir that's fair, I played nonstop for like 50 hours for the first month or so and havent gone back. I dont think it's a bad game by any means tho
2020 was an extremely dry year for Switch owners. 2021 isn't looking much better, although some admittedly major 3rd party releases are dropping this year (e.g. Shin Megami Tensei 5, 2 Monster Hunter games, Bravely Default 2).
I just got a 3ds just as the switch turned 4.
enjoy your vastly superior handheld.
@@chickennugget6684 thanks, do you have one too?
Kid Icarus: Uprising on Switch please.
