#13 - Creating an Open-Plan Living Area and Exposing Stone Walls at Our Portugal Home Renovation

  • We're back after a week in England and back to the grind (although most of this was shot pre-trip!). Becci joins in with removing the render while Michael continues to open up the upstairs rooms. It feels like all of the thoughts we've had about this Portuguese renovation project are finally coming to fruition. You can see how the open upstairs space is going to work. We just need to try and figure out how to solve the damp problem and retain a lot of character while making the space livable for us.

    My favorite video so far. Mostly shows one project. It might help break things up for you going from one project to the other but “for me” I liked seeing a lot accomplished rather than a little bit on one project then a little on another. But hey, it’s your renovation and you need to do what you need for you. Not complaining about the others just really enjoyed this one. Thank you for taking the time to share, I really enjoy watching.

      Thank you 😊 you'll probably like tomorrow's! It's focused mostly on one thing. I know what you mean...nice to see a job from start to finish. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment!

    Your husband is a machine, I think he's enjoying every moment of it. I can see the wheels turning when he speaks about what he's doing, loving it.❤

    Don't knock yourself over how long it took, you did it, that's great. Not many people have been brave enough to tackle what you guys have, so enjoy the progress.👍❤

    I am sure you can ask a contractor for advice on damp in walls. I have one wall and it is in a corner. The old house next door to me has a shower room , just a drain in the floor. The years of use have caused my walls (which are almost a meter thick) to get that white fuzzy damp on them. A contractor told me he could place a vent next to that area and frame up the wall with 1 x 2 planks, use the insulation sheets they use on the outside of houses, coated in aluminum or something like that. and sheet rock over it. But it probably won't end the problem, It will make it worse for some person who will buy my house years from now and have to take all of that out of the wall. The room with damp is in my cellar street level. but that corner backs up to a cave carved into the mountain.

      Yes, I think there are a number of solutions but often only temporary and mask the problem. We'd ideally like to keep the walls exposed too! Hopefully we'll be able to dig a good bit of the land out from behind 😊

    It's amazing how sturdy those walls were without the water damage. The plaster seemed to be in good condition compared with stone or brick walls.👍

      @PortugalonaPostcard  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is! The wood is in really good condition in places which is great because we can reuse it for doors etc.! ☺️

    I would also open up the rooms, the old Portuguese houses have bedrooms the size of the bed most of the time, too small.

    • @PortugalonaPostcard
      @PortugalonaPostcard  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah they were so small and impractical! Unless we just had a bedroom each with a single bed 🤣

    Too bad there are no subtitles for this episode. Yes, and how to keep your house moisture-free. I have no idea about that
    Thanks for all the responses I receive from my comment.

    Have you decided how you will heat the open plan room? I'm wondering whether to get air source heat pump and radiators. Are there grants available in PT?

    • @PortugalonaPostcard
      @PortugalonaPostcard  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not yet... Definitely a log burner! There have been some grants recently but via EDP I think. Something we really need to look into too... ☺️

      Merci! Même si je comprends un peu la langue anglaise il y a des subtilités que j’ignore et c’est un peu frustrant car je comprends mal le propos. Même si avec la traduction automatique (😂)c’est parfois surréaliste !
