#27 - Can We DIG Out This Solid Stone Floor by HAND?

- Not only do we get all of the weather imaginable this week but Michael also gets to work looking at the solid rock floor in the downstairs rooms. We also fill another skip and head off on a walk by the river.

When you started breaking up the rock with your pick I was waiting for you to stop and say this is too hard I need to hire a jackhammer - but you didn’t! You just kept going. This is a man who is not shy of hard work. I may have missed something, but have you explained why you are taking all the render off everywhere? It looks to me as though it’s an integral part of those walls and is helping to hold them up. Anyway all the best to you both and those lovely doggos.

The render is old cement render so is trapping moisture in the walls. We will repoint all of the walls to stabilise them 😊💛
I really admire your tenacity, just think how long that floor has been too difficult for anyone else to tackle, and there you are, working at it without complaining. You are doing what a few generations thought wasn't possible, or just too hard, love it. 👍❤

I think those iron rods were meant to keep the cement on the outside wall.
I bet that floor is made out of granit,so hard to dig

I would have drilled a hole in the skip to drain the water. After filling the skip they won't see it...

What an epic week, you got through loads. It's amazing how much building materials went into two skips, and that's just on the surface of the walls mostly, huge. Great job, both of you put in an awesome push to get that skip full.👍❤

Greetings cousins! I’m sitting here relaxing in Palm Springs watching you guys bustin ass on your project and I’m thinking maybe I should get up and sweep the patio or something .I’m just kidding, it’s going to be 86 degrees here today so I won’t be sweeping anything 😂

Moody! Always a pleasure 😊 Definitely don't be doing anything in that heat... I can recommend a cold beer though! It was supposed to be similar here today but we had sand blowing in from the Sahara which kept the sun out! 😅
We'll probably point a lot of the walls. Depends what we can do for the underground walls as well. Have a good weekend!

6.7 tonnes! Wow!! All loaded by hand by you two! Holy smokes, you guys rock. Geeeezzz... if you are rendering back, that's how much materials you will have to use. Plus all the other previous loads, of course. WoW!! How much do they charge for a load like that? Kudos! fantastic meticulous work, as always. What do the village people think of all your hard work?

A lot of the locals slow down and have a good look and wave. Our neighbours who used to own the house are here at the moment (live in Lisbon most of the time) and love catching up on what we're doing. A privilege to be bringing their family home back to life! 😊

My grandfather was a rock mason. The only time he used metal pipe or straps in a wall was to stabilize or bind rocks or sections of rock together, so they did not move. If he wanted to make sure plaster adhered, he used wire or bands that created a type of spike that connected rock/s to the plaster. Not sure how the builders of your wall typically incorporated metal, but I suspect the principles of use were generally the same.
Interesting. Thanks so much 😊 they don't seem to be providing any support to the walls (we do have ties in the walls elsewhere) so it would seem to be something to do with the plaster definitely. Thanks again!

You should change the channel name: Tenacity postcard from Portugal… Do you pay for the weight of the rubble you are evacuating or the volume? In that last case why bothering with the water? It will be absorbed by the rubble.

Why would anyone want to remove a solid stone floor? That would be something to keep.
Absolutely! It's the bedrock so we'll still have a solid stone floor but as Michael said, we need to make it level mainly due to head height 😊 we also need to consider damp due to it being the bedrock 👍🏻

You are doing and amazing job but Wouldn’t it be better if you were to invest in to power tools?! You are working yourself to the bone.
We will do where possible but we've been reluctant to use any around the walls/floor in case it destabilises or damages anything. There's also something about working with our hands like the original builders will have done 😊 thanks so much for watching!
