Excellent collection of good tools in the garage and what a relief when you pulled back the cover on the bed and did not discover the remains of the last occupant.
But what is in the bags?? It might give us a clue about the (former) owner of the stuff.

Congrats on this one Jasper! I believe you did a great deal. You and the sellers of course. If the house was empty and with no maintenance, you can bring it back to its former glory and plans for the future is the future. Thats what life is all about.
I see a lot of potential there. Even if you have "to share" you part of the garden for a while .

O pequeno armário de cozinha era típico das casas antigas das aldeias os meus avós tinham um igual, era comum as pessoas terem animais ( cabras e ovelhas) e produziam o seu próprio queijo esse armário era para guardar o queijo e alguns alimentos secos❤😊

Congratulations! I’ve been gone awhile. I will have to look at the old videos to see how everything has gone. Oh wow does Luis still have a home in the town? It’s a great property. And great idea. Just fix up the roof and maybe build an outhouse with compost toilet and shower. Perfect place for your volunteers. In my neighborhood we have a fellow that has bought a few houses and has fixed them up and rented them out. He lives on one of the properties as well. We call him the mayor of our street since he is slowly buying up the derelict houses. 😂 You are the unofficial major of your ghost town. Congratulations!🎉

Hopefully there is water - (no bathroom in that house) because the one thing I notice with all Portuguese areas is the dry grass everywhere - trees seem to be fine, but obviously it doesn't rain very much ! My sister's in-laws have a house near Faro in Southern Portugal, and it is very dry there & they do have to be very careful with water. I do not find it to be beautiful, just scruffy everywhere ! Altho you will be able to make it lovely if you can afford to spend some money on it ! So maybe in 2 years time we will be able to see what you have achieved ? Good Luck ! Hard work - but very satisfying to fix up a property !
Faro and Algarve is pretty hot and dry. Where Jasper lives it is also hot in Summer. But yearly overall more rain.
Yes, the grass can turn yellow in the summer. But trees (and vines) go deeper.

Hallo Jasper, ik hoop begin volgend jaar een paar maanden in een campertje door centraal en noord Portugal te reizen. Mijn droom is een om een klein maar leefbaar authentiek huisje te vinden wat een beetje vrij staat maar zeker niet afgelegen. Wel een stuk grond van 500m2. Bestaat dat wel. Ik kom vaak enorme huizen tegen. Leuk dat je aan de weg timmert.

Maybe you could work out with your neighbor to rent his side of the garden from you for some token fee, like 1 Euro/year. That way could still use it, but there would be a clear paper trail acknowledging your ownership.
I also wonder if that square concrete "mystery annex" you think belongs to the house is the missing bathroom, but somehow it's accessed the neighbor's side.

The more I watch your videos, the more I'm considering Europe as a retirement destination The prices for property there is what we would pay in a few months' rent in America. I for one don't mind a little hard work and would welcome a remodel project. Keep posting your videos.

12.000 Euro for the garage is a good price. Now you have a place to park your car inside. But needs some cleaning first.
So you bought a garage (including some tools) with a garden in the back, also included. And a well on top of that.
The house (4-5 rooms), you can consider that as a bonus, for free basically.
In the US, if you give him written permission to use your land, he can never claim it.

I find all this so fascinating. I'm not sure that I caught your plans for the village. Are you hoping to bring it back alive by making it appealing, so other people will purchase properties there? Are you thinking you could turn some properties into rentals or vacation rentals? What is the advantage of living in a place with so few neighbors besides peace and quiet and the prices are right?
Would be good to break down the walls on 2 sides and making the room bigger and outback room would be good for bathroom.

Regarding your neighbour and there use of your land one option could be what is called a Peppercorn Rent in UK, the description in Wiki says 'In legal parlance, a peppercorn is a metaphor for a very small cash payment or other nominal consideration, used to satisfy the requirements for the creation of a legal contract.' With such a contract it would clarify you as the owner now and in the future, but still allow them the use of the land.

Congratulations! Whereabouts is your house? In 2018 I visited 18 properties in one week in Portugal and finally decided for a house in a very small village. The house was very destroyed and I have slowly organized for it to be recovered. Luckily the roof was in good condition and the house structure was very strong, but for the rest it was all broken (hammered) by the previous owner who lost the house for debts. Now, 5 years later it is a fine house but I still have to wait for 2 years to retire. Long wait.... It is difficult to find an honest person to do the works in your house as they see you as a millionaire and charge a lot for a rubbish job done. The portuguese see in us an opportunity to make easy money.
