Masonry Stove and Stone Stairway | Complete Build

- Compilation of the build of the masonry stove. The concrete core and doors were provided by Tempcast. The integration of the chimney and stairway is custom, all build from local stone available on the property.
A masonry stove works a bit different than a conventional cast iron wood stove. It is designed to burn a fire as hot and as fast as possible, in one go, without adding more wood during the burn. The hot air goes through extended flue channels that heat the masonry, before it reaches the chimney. More so than the fire itself, the masonry will warm the space long after the fire is burned out. The amount of wood that is stacked depends on the outside temperature. The fire is lit with small kindling from the top. This allows the bigger logs on the bottom to slowly heat up and catch flame as the fire progresses, resulting in a very hot and smokeless fire that keeps the chimney clean.

I was surprised to see the stove build this week...my plan is to introduce this in my build in western Canada where the temperatures are mid range through out the year as we are mountainous prairie conditions here, however, be interesting to see how this stands up to our seasonals and winter here, may need some backup but looking forward to the heat this produces as well. Nice to see this episode in a build all of its own from start to finish which will be included in a must see video to my builders who assemble mine here. Thanks for the memory and recap. Martijn, this build is by far the most impressive work I've seen in my 50 years and counting as a builder and now building sciences engineer. It must be the mountain air in addition to dedication and a will to do better. Cheers

The building of the masonry stove separate is a work of art.....the stove AND the filming of the build such a pleasure to see the whole poetic process. Such stand-alone episodes deserve their own day of the week to note video focus is "different" somehow.

I'm so impressed with the speed in which Martijn learns new skills! Stonemasonry is VERY uncommon yet here he is chiseling that stone like this was the olden days and stone was the only way to get construction materials.

A good way to see the stove build, faster and more concise, but not forgetting all the huge effort to perfect the finished build. It looks absolutely beautiful Martijn, you must be very proud. And I can almost smell that bread!! It was also beautiful, but very sad, to see the black chicken again, before the dog attack. You can really see how much bigger the white and brown hens have grown since little Blackie was killed. A lot has happened, and when you see time reduced like this it shows very clearly how hard you have worked to get where you are today. Well done, and thank you for the huge amount of work you put into producing the videos for us each week. To do all that on top of your physical efforts on the build is truly a testament to you Martijn.
Usually ff through these build videos..but..found myself hypnotized by the pace. Great design that has stood the test of time. I'm so impressed by Martin's attention to detail and craftsmanship. In the US similar technology is often called a rocket stove mass heater. The rocket stove is probably traditional masonry stove burn techniques someone saw on a trip to Europe, adapted slightly and renamed to give it a newer more snazzy modern sounding image.
Either you love to labour or it's a labour of love. The end result looks like a functional piece of art.

You've got a cozy set-up there. It's nice to know that the heat from the hearth is absorbed in the stones surrounding the hearth and that the stones radiate that same heat into the room.

Just one note: from my prior experience with a fire place with a window vent inside: the fire will absorb the oxygen from the room as a result, it will make the room drafty. This happened to me in a cottage in Scotland. Once we sealed the internal window and made an external vent (to the outside of your house wall) the room heated up incredibly well and we felt no longer a draft…this is why you probably do not the constant 20 Celsius inside. ❤❤❤
You can't beat building a fire once and stay warm for hours, like you can with these mass-heat concepts.

Ive been renovating places non stop for 3 years on my own. As a female with no help and no family to support me in Australia, Sunshine coast where trades are either way out of my price range or not worth having, and or dangerous to have around I've learnt to do it well by myself.
Exhausted I flop onto my only place to flop, my bed, and dream about my travel plans. I hope my tenants don't wreck my dreams 😢. I hope they respect the work I've done and look after my home.
