#18 - How OLD Are These Bricks Around the Windows? Yet More Discoveries at Our Restoration Project!

  • Michael starts to take a look at some of the old windows and not only finds a fabulous old beam but some VERY interesting bricks, too. The bricks surrounding the window are old but the bricks at the top appear even older. Our dear friend, Wayne, at @carpe-diem did say that the Portuguese sometimes used old Roman bricks as building materials but it's hard to tell.
Does anyone have any idea on the age? Please comment below if you do!
Michael also tackles our out-of-control Agave plant and we try to tame the 'live' stone wall outside the cabin.

Good on you for cutting the Agaves right back, entrance ways are meant to be prickly!

Your agave (Agave Americana) is probably at least 30 years old. I had one in my yard, and although their life span is 10-30 yrs, mine was at least 40 when my father decided it was time for a change. They usually flower once in a lifetime. In the old days in Portugal, the pointy ends where cut and used for eating snails (a traditional summer delicacy to be eaten with beer). You can also use toothpicks to get the snails out of their shell but for me, using an agave pointy end was the cat's meow!! As for the bricks I have no idea. The old brick pots you find everywhere were used to collect sap from the pine trees. Good luck with the windows. What a satisfying project you embark on. Thanks for sharing!.

Thank you so much! That's really fascinating. If we eat some snails, I'll definitely take a bit of our agave with me 😅 thanks again 💛

Hey guys, cheers from Palm Springs California! I believe that “bad boy “ you referred to as an Agave, is a variated Century plant. ( I could be mistaken) and it should survive the amputations😂 If you stand back from the brickwork, it appears they were only installed to make the openings with square edges vs using stone. They didn’t intend them to be exposed, so they look kinda haphazard. I would peel them out and fill the sides with something else and render over that. Use the best salvaged bricks as an exposed decorative header. Jut my two cents 🤓Best wishes, Brotha Moody.

Hello Moodster! Great to hear from you 😊 and to hear that the Agave should survive the hacking! Good idea on the bricks... we thought we could maybe salvage enough to do a couple of windows. Have a great weekend! 💛

I planted the same thing back in 1987, it grew to be huge, then about 5 years ago it shot up a pole out of the centre to about 15 meters high. It then over a few months went on to flower and produce hundreds of baby plants at the top of the spike. As the young plants started to form the original withered away and died bringing the whole lot down. I have since planted many of the young plants. The whole thing was spectacular and could be seen from far away.👍❤

Wow!!! 😅 Haven't seen any flowers but maybe they'll come in spring? They are amazing... It's just in the wrong place to be huge but we could maybe replant some in another space 💛

It’s so nice to see that old render come off the stones, the brick assortment though, seems like they intended to render over, but the brick at the top of the window looks decorative but at the same depth as the others, like what? It just seems a bit strange, and the wooden frame doesn’t match the other window, I don’t know, is it a pattern of the house with the framed and unframed? Super nice work though, looks fantastic, thank you, great episode.

Yes I know what you mean... Need to do a bit more research! The other window is metal and has been added later for some reason. Thanks so much and thanks for watching 😊

Watching you take off the old tender was fascinating. Why did they put render on in the first place? Was it for aesthetics or damp/insulation issues?. Hi from Australia.

    • @PortugalonaPostcard
      @PortugalonaPostcard  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you so much 😊 I think it probably was for damp... Before they knew that it only adds to the problem!

The former people who lived there covered the house in cement, how terrible!
They didn't know only bricks can be coverd with cement! The natural stones need to be covered by lime or mortar because natural stones need to breath.

Exactly! However, it does feel amazing to be peeling back the layers and seeing the house come back to life 😍

      It’s called weeding and pruning.
