The BMW 3 Series gets wide-ranging improvements in seventh generation form.
The BMW 3 Series has ruled the compact part of the mid-sized executive segment for more than forty years and the company's hopes are high for this seventh generation version. It's smarter, slightly larger, more efficient and considerably high-tech. All the things you'd expect really. Something else you'd expect from this model is rear wheel drive handling purity. It doesn't disappoint in that regard either.
Background
The BMW 3 Series Saloon has had an unparalleled reputation both for its quality, and supreme handling in the premium midsize segment for more than 40 years and this, the seventh generation, raises the bar even higher.
When the first BMW 3 Series was launched in 1975, it revolutionised the segment and became the Munich maker's most successful car. Since then, over 15 million 3 Series models have been sold globally and this contender is regarded as the heartbeat of the brand. With revised styling, improved driving dynamics, better efficiency and innovative features, this seventh generation model aims to continue that success story. A stiffer more sophisticated platform with revised suspension, plus stronger safety standards, a more up-market cabin and wider-reaching media connectivity will all help in that regard.
Driving Experience
It's still rear wheel drive of course - though xDrive 4WD is, as before, as option. Upgraded four-cylinder engines from BMW's Efficient Dynamics family are used across the powerplant range, which kicks off with the 184hp 320i. The same engine's also used in the 330e plug-in hybrid model. The other mainstream petrol engine available is the 258hp unit in the 330i. If you want six cylinders, you'll need the 374hp engine of the rare M340i. Diesel drivers can start their perusals with the 150hp 318d, before going on to consider the 190hp 320d derivative that most choose. This mid-range diesel model generates 400Nm of torque which enables a 0-62mph sprint time of 7.1s (or just 6.8s for the auto). At the top of the diesel line-up is the 265hp 330d. The brand's xDrive 4WD system is optional on the 320i, the 320d and the 330d. And you have to have it on the M340i. A new generation six-speed manual gearbox is available - thoiugh only on the base 318d diesel variant. Otherwise, your 3 Series will come with eight-speed Steptronic auto transmission.
The handling promises to be even sharper thanks to a wider track, and a chassis that's up to 50% stiffer in some areas and which features special lift-related dampers. A 55kg weight reduction this time round also helps. Adaptive M suspension can be specified on 'M Sport' models. And 330i and 330d buyers will be offered an optional M Sport differential for the rear axle which helps to enhance traction, agility and cornering. This is standard on the M340i.

Just drove a rental 2020 BMW 3 series for 15 hours straight. (Besides gas stops) from West Palm Beach Florida to Ashland Kentucky. And I will get say the best trip I have ever had. It was an absolute dream trip. It will be my next car. Always have been a GMC truck guy here. Drove a total of @2500 miles and all I want to do is drive it more. 15 hours on the road and got out feeling like I drove two mile down the road. no getting out of the car going oh god stretching my back and taking a minute to get my legs working again. I can’t believe the difference this car makes. And the best thing is it actually cost less than a friggin new GMC truck unbelievable. It’s around 45,000 for a new BMW and around 75,000 for a damn truck. Sorry gmc but you’re not getting my next buy. This BMW is truly the ultimate driving machine. Absolutely the best car I have ever driven.

That was the most comprehensive car review I've ever seen. Didn't have 1:16 but I couldn't stop watching it. The review pitches it well ahead of the A4 and the C Class, but it does make you wonder whether the review was TRULY independent and objective, or was it just that the car is hands-down much better than the current opposition? I bought a new 5 series last march. If I had known the new 3 series was going to be like this… I would have waited… For the same price as my 5 series, I would have had a fully specced 3 series. Not that I don't like my 5 series M sport package, on the contrary, I love it.

I've just found a 320d xDrive Touring with the features that suit me, however does the X-Drive dull the driving feel - should i hold-out for the rear-drive only?
Also in your list of considerations within the BMW brand you missing the Active Tourer (F45 LCI in 2019, the time of your vid), yes it dosen't drive as well as the 3er but arguably better than the X1, it also has better rear legroom and better load space and cheaper and still retains a lot of the features that come as standard or up-spec.

I've only driven the version with the steering wheel on the correct side and it's brilliant.
So I am quite confused as to why I keep hearing people say that you only get apple car play the first year for free. My 320I has apple car play and i do not pay for it. I got the 2019 g20 model.

I recommend it, the latest G20 330d has 286bhp and 650nm torque.

@@davehewisonphoto Mine amazes me, I get on average 48mpg out of it with a heavy foot. I used to get 42mpg out of my F30 320d, pitty it looks like they've dropped the 330d in the new LCI facelift, glad I ordered when I did as they've ruined it.

Absolutely superb review. We've just ordered a 330e m sport plus but didn't realise it removes the split folding rear seats which is a biggy for us. Also wondering if you had any opinion on full cab size of this versus a 4 series gran coupe?

Not on the M Sport! The 330e M Sports still come with split folding rear seats so you should be good. Enjoy the car, it's great.
Misleading model number. BMW are clever, but not that clever. They want everyone to think it a 3.0 engine but its only a 2.0. What a scam but of course, the number on the back is oh so important when trying to impress everyone. The arrogance of the brand shows no boundaries.

52:30 Are you sure the rear folding seats are optional on the 330e? I don’t think so. Might want to check that again.
Glad you said that as our 330e is in production and being a family car I'd probably be disowned if I missed that as it's absolutely essential 😆
Tom OToole I’m fairly confident they’ve got that wrong in the review. I’ve checked again since and it’s standard on the 330e or else like you I wouldn’t have ordered one.

Very thorough, but the 6-cylinder in the M3 (S58) is related to, but not the same as, that in the M340i (B58). The 330i at least does have the highest spec 4 cylinder engine available (the B48 also related to the B58).

Excellent review indeed! After having previously an F30 I have had now for 5 months a G20 330i and it is quite superb, excellent to manoeuvre about town and on the Motorway. The suspension even on 19” wheels is superior to the F30 on 18’ wheel and my Wife has a bad back! It is excellent going into corners and holds firm and flat on the bends and with superb controlled exits. It can do 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 secs which is pretty good for a 4 cyl 2 litre car! In sport mode just tell the Wife to hold on!
i find that whatever the marque, people on a limited budget and owning an older model will always claim that their particular model was superior in this, that, or the other way to the newer version car.
no doubt as years go by and the new car becomes wihin their budget, they modify their assessment to suit their latest purchase.
the 6 had it's day, fuel consumption is king now.
So the “reset” has been to make it bigger and heavier again?

Why car companies don’t carpet the underside of the boot in saloon cars I’ll never understand. It makes you start to look for other ways that they have cut costs. ‘Perceived’ quality rather than an actual good quality finish that you would have got in BMW’s and Mercedes of yesteryear.
