  • I had no plans to review this car, but once I drove it a realised just how good it was and had toe share it with you. Not a car I would buy myself but you need a company car to do lots of miles in the look no further.
    The BMW 320d X-Drive has enough performance to put a smile on your face, great fuel economy and a lovely ride and handling. Before you get too excited, it's not perfect but join me for a drive and I'll tell you more.

    I'm going to say it again, but I loved my 2010 330d coupé. For the two of us, I couldn't fault it. Comfortable, economical and for me, the 3lt engine was a peach. Ooodles of torque to get past most traffic with ease and most importantly, safely. And if I ever went out and felt like a "good drive", then it obliged with realish :-))...
    As for the new 3 series, I think they're really great. And unlike a lot of people, I do like the 4 series big grill. It's really grown on me and harks back to the BMW's of the late 50's and early 60's.
    Nice one PP :-))...

    Cracking review, thanks Ped! Love your reviews, and love your cornish home even more! I'm considering coming to stay early next year as we came to Mevagissy last year for a day whilst staying in St Austel, and we absolutely loved it! Please keep the "normal" car reviews coming, would love to see your opinions on a 5 series as I currently have the F10 varient. Cheers!

    I had one as a hire car recently, similar spec to that; reminded me what a nice place it was to be in, and got me thinking about the 325d I used to have. Maybe heading into the BM showroom if I ever replace the clubby

    I had a 520d a few years ago when I was doing 35,000 miles a year. Superb car, very reliable, extremely comfortable, drive well, handled well and just amazing mpg. I regularly got 55-60mpg. I'm not a BMW fanboy ( I know how to use indicators) , but every other Audi or Mercedes driver on the road seems to assume you are and treats you like dirt on their shoe, chops you up on motorways and roundabouts. So I eventually got rid of it and bought a 5 year old Range Rover Sport and love it. I drive sensible and nobody bothers me.

    Owned a fair few diesels in my time compared to what they used to be they’ve come on leap & bounds. The Hyundai i20 diesel I had before my petrol Tucson now was great on fuel economy, not quick but enough to get you out of trouble. Like the reviews on run of the mill cars which the majority of us have & afford. Carry on with the cracking uploads

    My last car was a 320d m sport touring. It was the perfect do-it-all daily.
    I had it from 96k to 144k and it returned 52mpg on a run, and almost 40mpg around town.
    It was refined, fast enough for 90% of situations, comfy, good looking, good handling, and loads of room & load space.
    You can't fault them.

    Hey Ped. I had exactly the same spec car earlier in the year thru work for a trip, with the exception of slightly bigger wheels, and I too was well impressed. Great ride, plenty of go, brilliant infotainment system and looked the part exterior wise. But the book price, for the car I had, was over 40k! 40k for a 320d! Which I just couldn’t get my head around. So yes I totally agree, if you got one as a company car you’d be seriously happy but as a personal purchase, they’re just over priced for what they are. Great review as ever though

    • @stubones
      @stubones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. I like the way my black e91 s series looks but the paint has been wrecked over the years and the marks show up so much. The car looks filthy in no time and not to mention it gets stinking hot on a summer's day. The paint gets so hot to the touch that on a scorcher touching the metal parts of the car risks actually burning your skin off and that's not an exaggeration. I watched an insect land on the car once and it sizzled instantly. I'll never buy another black car again (even though I think my car looks pretty menacing and awesome in black). I see videos from hot countries, like USA or UAE, where people spec cars in black from new and I just think they're utterly bonkers. To make the point; I used to have a neighbour with a white 118D. The car was parked in the sun and it was a 30 degree c day. I touched the roof of that car and it was cool to touch. I didn't even try to touch the the roof of my car, I could already feel the heat waves just by standing near it.

    A very nice review of a car you and many of your viewers normally wouldn't look twice at. However, I think it is important to have a broad perspective on what is available. It helps to speak to those trying to move up from say a 320d to an M340i as to the differences and the benefits. Perspective can make us appreciate those special cars when we can afford them.

    Interesting review. I've had 2 BMW 320ed's as company cars. Fantastic MPG, 60+ and really low BiK, for me I never thought I'd get to "own" a brand new BMW so this ticked the box. The company car world is a whole different way to choose a car, it does come down to emissions, BiK and MPG which is why BMW and Mercedes are ahead of the other car manufacturers. They want to sell cars to the company care driver. I appreciate your review and I can't fault your comments except I had no issue at all with the rear wheel drives, even in snow, but then I do live in the South and we don't get that much. I was delighted with my 2 BMW 320ed's and would happily have another one, if the emissions and BiK works in my favour. I'm considering a 330e M sport next time, perhaps you can review one of them if you get the chance? Keep up the great reviews.

    I had one. I didn’t like the tachometer on the right. It had some electric gremlins. The sports seats were a bit hard but comfortable after 10k miles. After the first model issues it gave 30k of fault free miles. Smooth. Not powerful but not gutless either. It’s quite possibly all the car you need in real world situations. Economical. Not fast but sufficient. Smooth. Quiet cabin and feels refined. A bit disconnected at times due to the isolated cabin and lack of steering feel. The steering is precise otherwise. Love the torque. Relaxing car to drive if you’re not looking to rev out. I got one after my 335d (F30) caught fire from the EGR. That felt like world’s fastest diesel and I thought I’d never go 4 pot but it doesn’t feel like a downgrade. It’s hot hatch performance of the 90’s. What I liked most on the 320d was the trick suspension. The electronic dampers push down the car at the front. This reduces the sickly seesawing motion associated with acceleration. It makes the car feel planted for a non X drive variant. Anyhow, I think this is a fantastic balanced and detailed review so thanks.

    Refreshing video Pete. I had a test drive in a 320i x-Drive m sport last week and was thoroughly impressed. It made my 3 year old Audi A4 look pretty old fashioned! I will be taking delivery of the car at the end of the month and can’t wait. The car is a 20 plate with 2k miles and is a bargain at just under £29k, a saving of over £9k. I was really pleased that you confirmed my own thoughts and impressions of this car. Not sure whether to replace the run-flat tyres though?

    I've owned several cars and my 2020 M340 is by the far the best I've ever owned. AWD is great for Canadian winter as well as for beating M-purists off the line in their vastly more expensive , previous gen M3s and M4s. As much as one of those cars has been my ultimate goal, I realize I have all I need with this car.

    I had a 320d business edition back around 2009 and it was a lovely car to be fair. Was really well spec’d and as I did a lot of miles back then, the 60mpg was great. These days I do much fewer miles and have the new M340i, which is just about my perfect all round car. Took it to Ikea at the weekend, packed loads in and averaged 42mpg (from a 374hp 6 pot!). Given the performance, the economy you can get from that car is some form of witchcraft.

    I chose the 320i poverty spec but with some options like the sensatec/fabric seats, the digital dash thing and xdrive. Finland didn’t get much snow last winter so it is to be seen how useful the Xdrive really is here. So far only thing bugging me is the DSC which is too sensitive on winter tyres, otherwise a fun everyday car.

    I can relate to all the comments as I have a 2019 330i M Sport which is a GREAT car. Great economy, performance, handling, comfort. Not too impressed with the OE Bridgestone Turanza tyres after only 12,000 kms . Buying Michelin PS4 S tyres to replace. Interesting in Australia, the 320d was a good seller in Australia but with no taxes relating to exhaust emissions and Dieselgate publicity, the model has been removed from the price lists as petrol models are very economical and good performers.

    My last two cars were 3ltr Twin Turbo BMWs (525d and then a 530d). Great performance from them and easy to drive with the low down torque etc. The 320d has been the main family choice of the nation due to its decent performance and great economy. Safe bet for many and they are well built as you say. Interiors are nice also with a balance of buttons and dials plus touch screens. Too much screen means too many finger prints which makes the car interior look dirty.

  • @fang75429
    @fang75429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the biggest question is 320d vs 330e for a company car driver. By topping up the 330e overnight it will be more powerful, cheaper to run, I think they still get a congestion charge subsidy etc. However one thing that I don't quite get is the need for xdrive. I'm in NZ and we get plenty of rain here, I have no problems in my M6 with PS4S tyres in heavy rain, coming out of bends, accelerating out of junctions etc. I can't see that it would be possible to have too many issues in a 320d RWD unless it is snowing but then you should be running a set of snow tyres anyway

    • @danyalexys4956
      @danyalexys4956 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 330e is not a better option for company car drivers who have to do very long journeys or miles, only if they do lots of short journeys around the electric mile range. Also the plug-in hybrid is heavier and handling suffers as a result. 320d lighter and a proper driving machine.

    • @Frank-1978
      @Frank-1978 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danyalexys4956 I disagree with respect. The handling on public roads is not noticeably worse and the difference in power is substantial. If you are doing 300 miles a day then yes the diesel is more suited economy wise but if its one or two long trips a week then I'd take the petrol every time. The 330e would leave the 320d for dust

      @@danyalexys4956 From a tax incentive point of view in the UK I thought it was a big advantage benefit in kind wise no? I'm in Ireland so not sure. I drive from Cork to Dublin maybe twice a month . 240 klm each way and I'd average 40 to 45 mpg on the run. The rest of the time I barely put any fuel in it. Its about 35klms a charge average if u use electricity only but u would be surprised how short most journeys are. I can charge at home from on outside normal 3 pin socket and top it up each night. I've 11k on the clock and over half were electic only miles to far. The silent electic part of the car is very relaxing and sounds a bit like a spaceship if its quiet around the place. I like it a lot. Certainly wouldn't take a 4 pot diesel over it. Clanking around the place. Also when you put your foot down in extra boost mode it does shift. It's a great car and I think the best hybrid on the road for the money. I'd love a 45e X5 but out of my price bracket. My advice is test drive them both. 👍Best of luck whichever one you choose.

    You said that you wouldn't buy one and that its not a car for you at all.
    Is that just because its a diesel or would your disdain carry over to the petrol version to?
    I like the BMW build quality and attention to detail , but the price of their spare parts i have found ludicrous, Audi by comparison seem to be more realistic.

    Hey Ped a honest brilliant review. I can see why you do not film normal cars as people won't view the video. Eg if you did a review on the Mercedes E220d vs the E63 AMG then the E63 will get the most views. I love the 20d, I hired a 520d s drive in Germany last year and drove a 1000 miles. I averaged 55mpg and included 2 max speed runs. In terms of speed yes late 7s to 60 is nothing special these days but it accelerated to 145 mph ( winter tyres) with ease. For a commuter car then you can't go wrong, the 520d did ok in the local nurburgring twistys for those weekend away. Still can't go wrong with a silky smooth 6 pot.

    I purchased a 320i touring xdrive in 2018 as one of the run out cars before the new model. Great car... but I do wish that I had waited for the latest model. The upside? It will give me a little time to wait and go for the 340 in 2 years, before they cease production! I’m desperate to have one decent 6 cylinder in my driving lifetime. I say decent because I don’t count my old TVR S2 that only ever seemed to fire on 4 or 5!! 😁 Now that was a summer of fun... 2003....all I remember was that I had a green arse... all that sitting on grass verges, waiting for the AA!! 😁

    Hi Peter, found the video very interesting especially about performance, costs and driveability. We regularly drive to Cornwall from West Sussex to visit relatives. I think you know that road quite well but I have done it for over 50 years. We either take one of two cars. Let us call them car A and B. On the same journey Car A averages 55 m.p.g and B 25m.p.g. Yearly insurance(same spec for both) A= £407, B= £244. Annual road tax A= £475, B=£570. There is possibly just a few minutes( less than 10) time difference over the journey between the cars, with car B slightly quicker. Both cars are comfortable but car A is much quieter. So what is my conclusion. When I tell you what the cars are you can draw your own. A is BMW 5 touring 2 litre diesel same age as the one on the video and B a Porsche 911 Turbo S.

Great millage crunchers and comfortable you cant fault the economy either.As for the emissions debate well we all know how that has turned out with manufactures deliberately miss-leading buyers. All the major manufactures have been caught with the pants around there ankles one way or another.Sort of makes a total mockery of the whole system. My Mercedes A220d 2.2 AMG Line DCT has just gone back now as it had covered 100,000 miles in 4yrs. In that 4yrs my total Average fuel consumption was 65.8mpg. You really cannot beat that, its superb. My typical weekly average was 70.5mpg, covering 600 miles per week, ish. It was a personal lease rather than a company car, but i get all my fuel paid. But being a 2.2 you get more fuel allowance from a 2.2, so i ended up in -pocket every month which was nice. I used to be a real BMW fan boy - they are good cars. I had from new a E46 318i x 2, a 330i and a E92 353D - great cars. What killed it for me was when the big D got stolen through the OBD hack I reached out to BMW UK with the issue for a conversation on the problem. They responded with a brochure and a price list. Talk about mugging off your customer base! Been in Audi's since - not that I suspect they would have behaved any better mind you. You should probably think about car security as a topic for a video btw - look into the Autowatch Ghost if you ever do - must have bit of kit in a desirable car in my opinion.

    Unfortunately as others have pointed out it's BIK makes it a non starter for a company car in the UK.
    I had to go for a 330e as it was the only car that made financial sense,the tax saving pays for my MX 5 lease, so basically drive a 330e msport and get a free MX5.
    I am looking at an Evoke hybrid for my next company car,300bhp and a tenth of the tax on the 320d.
    Diesel company cars are dead in the UK until they change the BIK rules again.

      A Ferrari or Lamborghini from the 70's are both capable of more than double the speed limit. What difference does it make at this point whether a car is capable of 170mph or 220mph? You can't use either to their full potential. I often hear people say "400hp is the perfect amount to exploit on the road so you don't risk your licence"Say whaaaatttt?? If you exploit 400hp on the road you'll be doing an obscene speed. Even my car with 210hp is capable of getting me into trouble if I happened to get caught by plod.
