2020 BMW 330i Review: Is It Back To Being The Ultimate Driving Machine?

  • This week I got to drive the 2020 BMW 330i. I, along with many others, felt as though the previous generation (F30) was a deviation from what the 3 Series had always stood for: being a SPORTY SEDAN. As someone with significant seat time in F30 chassis vehicles, I set out to see if the new (G20) 330i would be a step back in the right direction. Luckily the car is a sizable improvement in interior design and technology. However, in a world with crossover craze, is the 3 Series back to being the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE.. check the video out to see what I thought!

    Bro u killing it with these reviews. Just watched like 6 today. My sad history is I'm moving from a m140i to a X3 2.0 RWD so you may understand the pain. BUT doing it as we have a 3yo daughter and needed the practicality. Hope I can recover this engine loss with an M car some time in the future. Anyway great content I'm sure you'll channel will blow up soon. All the best from Peru

    Reoniz, nice video, thank you. Your review on the sport qualities of the G20 is very clear. I just want to contribute commenting my 19 months experience with my 2020 330i. Differently to most of the audients, I am the type of guy who likes comfortable, smooth, silent cars. I used to drive a 2006 Toyota Camry V6 which a kept for 14 years. Now, I am amazed about the ride of this BMW. I just love to drive it in Ecopro mode. It is a delicious taste to feel the car quietly sailing at 50 MPH. For me, this is the real meaning of an ultimate driving machine. I would love to hear if somebody else shares this with me. Greeting from Mexico.

      @@Reoniz I had 2 E90s, a 2012 and a 2013. I fucking loved those cars. When I went to the four-door F30s it took me a while to get used to them, but I ended up really appreciating the four doors and more modern drivetrains and turbo engines. Hate my G 20. See my comment above. I just can't get used to it even if it is a refined ride. It lacks an X factor, and feels more like a BMW five series lite.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@amstaylorph honestly I can’t fully disagree with you. I too miss the “rawness” of my E92. And while I find my F30 to be a nice balance between the old and the new (better damped, stronger motor, better transmission) it sometimes feels way too disconnected. Yes the G20 is better in basically every objective way... but it’s missing even more of the visceral character of the older Bimmers. Unfortunately, you and I are in the minority... by a long shot. Most people will find the G20 to be leaps and bounds ahead of the E9X
      Spending time on bimmerpost will only bring about confirmation bias .... but just like you I’m sure, I frequent the site hahaha

    • @amstaylorph
      @amstaylorph 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Reoniz Yes √ Simply put, the G20 feels soulless, It lacks an X-factor. Essentially I bought (leased) the 'badge'. BTW, don't get me started on that awful lane assist feature. When fully engaged, it feels like the car is 'tram-liining' and feels unsafe! It induced a 'white knuckle response in me. I turned the 'feature off. And their Auto 'on/off, is still too judder-y compared to other brands.

    The only thing I didn’t see in this video is you actually driving it fast and talking about how the power feels. I drive my friends BMW yesterday and I don’t remember which BMW it was but I believe it was this one and I know it was only a 4cyl but it felt pretty fast for a 4cyl. It definitely seemed faster than a 5+ second 0-60 car but then again I didn’t launch in it, just from rolls.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm working on incorporating that more into my videos! It definitely feels zippy... and honestly I think the single segment that has benefited the most from forced induction is the entry level luxury cars that now make decent torque and easily accessible power. I can't imagine most people would prefer the old NA 3.0L flat sixes the 328's used to have aside from sound

    • @James_Edward59
      @James_Edward59 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reoniz Yea I completely agree. It had to of been that nearly 300 ft lb of tq that made it feel zippy and I noticed a difference from driving it in sport auto and then driving it in sport and using the paddle shifters, it was almost shifting to 3rd gear before I could, the 2nd gear was almost non existent that’s how fast it went from 1-3 but then again I was starting at the top of 1st gears power band a little before redline.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man you gotta drive the M340i!! It's even sweeter in every sense aside from having the lackluster steering rack from the F30... the G20 330i can fit the new rack and the longer engine in the M340i doesn't leave room for it.. a real shame :/

    • @James_Edward59
      @James_Edward59 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reoniz I’ll have to find someone who owns one and try it out, I wonder what the power to weight difference is in the 330i and the m340i. I just checked actually and the m340i is actually about 200lbs heavier but it does have a decent amount more hp and tq but there’s other things to take into consideration like gearing and traction but the numbers make the m340i seem much much faster. It’s just really weird, when I drove my friends 330i yesterday in sport mode using the paddle shifters, it did not feel like a 6 second 0-60 car and I’ve been in many fast cars including 3 and 4 second cars and it felt like a high 4 second car but maybe it’s because like I said before I didn’t launch it, would just go from a roll at like 10mph. I thought maybe it could have been a different model because I didn’t actually see what model it was, I just drove him to the airport in it and drove back home in it but I know he told me it was a 4cyl and the interior pics were the exact same as the 330i ones I’ve seen. The other thing I noticed is it’s pretty quiet and sometimes that can make a car feel slower or faster.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya that's crazy. Well I'll tell you something, some cars are much slower or faster than others in the much more useable 5-60mph test. And in this case, the 330i may just be pretty quick from 10-60 and that's likely why you feel so perplexed haha

      b48 (non-us engine) and b46 (US SPEC) are pretty reliable, if you keep up with routine maintenance and oil change about 6-7k miles you will perfectly fine
      less work than the b58 and even that is low maintenance with routine care

      If you've never driven a three series before I'm sure you'll like it. If you're coming from previous generations, particularly the F30s or E90s, it's a very different kind of car. Personally as I can't say often enough, I can't stand the fucking thing. I really think BMW have lost the plot with the 330i. The M340i is better. Even that though has that awful instrument display, shitty, cheap feeling switchgear and crappy speakers.

I see a lot white when they come off of a lease so hopefully I can get a black 1... for the 330i idk if I like the rims I think I would definitely change those to more thick spoke mix with silcse grey and black.. theee rims I’m not really feeling to much the last gen in my opinion had nice rims on the 330i what do u think ? @@anthonyhudson431 not a bad plan, they'll be a good value as CPO! Personally I prefer the more dynamic and connected feel of the 3 series, but considering neither of these cars is immensely connected or enthusiasts oriented, I'd get the one I liked the look of more ... or that made more financial sense

    Just stumbled across the channel as I'm in the market for a 330. You have good knowledge, but I think you're limiting your audience with all the "whas good", "I'm out", and immature hand gestures and bias about blacking things out and focusing on the rims, body kits, etc. Folks in their 20s or certain personalities might like that stuff, but you're going to turn off the majority of the population that is likely shopping for this car, which is an upper middle class person closer to 40 years old. Not many 22 year olds are buying a $50k car. You have good knowledge and good recommendations, just get rid of the fluff and I think you're videos will see more viewers for cars like this.

    No Android Auto and $300 pay for Apple Car play, that's why I didn't get the BMW. And 99% of all cars have Apple car play and android auto. Also BMW330i all have huge problems syncing with any phone vie Bluetooth, you must use usb cable. Big mistake by BMW quality control.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Will admit that there are sometimes Bluetooth connection issues, though I would not call them huge... HOWEVER, BMW now includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for free!! So this is now an issue of the past. Although you were likely searching for a car before these charges, but it’s a great step for BMW moving forward :)

    My old 2018 F 30 with the heads-up display, Harmon Kardon speakers and full infotainment screen was superior to my 2020 G20. Actually I fucking hate the G 20. I hated It the day I took delivery, and I'm still waiting to get used to it. The steering is fucking shit. It's way too light even in sports mode, and the switchgear feels cheap and plasticky. You're right, the sound system is a piece of fucking garbage. I've previously had four BMW three series 330i's And loved them all. My current G 20 is easily my least favorite. I can't emphasize strongly enough how much I dislike this piece of shit, and I'm looking to have someone take over my lease at the earliest possible opportunity. If anyone's interested, I'm in Los Angeles, and the monthly is 399 per month with 500 down to take over the lease. It's black on black, with under 5000 on the clock.
