    I hear way too many people complaining about hybrids. Let me explain why this car makes sense.
    My work is exactly 22km from home.
    This means that 80% of my yearly commute will be in full EV mode. In summer or winter.
    The rest 20% that i need to haul a trailer over the mountains or go long distance with the family i will be less efficient.
    But what does it really matter when 12000 km at least per year will be in full EV mode? Even if your work is 30 or 40km it still makes sense. Because 50% of your yearly commute will be in full EV mode.
    Don't be negative, be positive. I think the car is brilliant. My previous 330e (2016) had only 25km EV range and i loved it. I had to fill the tank every second month. This one now is probably perfect for most people. Next gen with 70km range will be amazing. I just wish it was a hatch-back and i would buy only that car for the rest of my life. Really.
    As always great review :)

    I live in Norway where the gas prices are apx: 6 dollars a gallon. I've had my 2020 330e for 4 months. I have only filled the tank 4 times. Most all my driving is electric. Excellent car! Am very happy with it!

    Thomas your reviews are just brilliant. You are hands down my favourite car TH-camr. You are also the only one to have a full 330e review in English on here. No other publication has done it so far. I ordered the car for delivery in September so was keen to see your review and you’re clearly impressed with it ! It was a toss up between this and the model 3 but the BMW won on quality and creature comforts. Hopefully I’ve made the right choice !

    I think plugin hybrids are the way to go at the moment. You have the electric part for your city/to-work drive, and at the same time a fully functional car for long drives. Not to mention that for a petrol-head the fully electric cars are so insanely boring.

Yes, nice silent electric drive, and I like the driving characteristics of this drive train arrangement for a PHEV. Nice car, but you have to be rich. Thanks for the excellent review as always.
    I want more "EV" in my PHEV. BMW's approach simply tacks on a motor and battery to the ICE drivetrain. This kind of PHEV has full complexity from both types of powertrains. I wish they would use the same philosophy as the i series and consider electrification from the ground up. With a powerful electric motor on the rear axle, you don't need to run the driveshaft from the ICE to the rear, and you certainly don't need an 8-speed transmission. Four gears would be plenty to cover a wide range of cruising scenarios. Batteries can be placed in the central tunnel, freeing up some luggage space. With the ICE only being used for cruising, it can be much simplified to run at a narrow range of rpm, dispensing the need for all the variable valve timing and lift as well as direct injection.

  • @wareidav

    I have a 2017 330e saloon which I consider a brilliant car, however the battery range isn`t as good with distance as indicated and the petrol tank is small so the overall range is at least 200km or more less than the equivalent petrol car. If you drive conservatively you can get over 400km combined range. The combined power is very good though and the drive in electric is like a magic carpet. I was considering getting the 2019 330e M-sport. After watching you review I will definitely be buying one.... Thank you. Informative and interesting

      @@nb0926 My 2017 330e can get with a (full bag of electric) and a full tank of fuel over 400 miles range. Which I consider good.
      I`ve just test driven the new 2019 330e. It is a light year ahead in tech, design and driver appeal. 200 miles range should be no problem whatsoever. I`m sure with a bit of good vehicle husbandry over 300 miles on one combined tank and bag (LOL) would be comfortably achievable. Hope that helps.
      Ps. I`m putting my order in for the 330e M-Sport with the M-Sport Plus pack. A very rounded car indeed.

In the end I went with the M Package with standard alcantara /sensatec which Thomas also prefers. So at least about 3 skins less for leatherindustry. The 'cool, relaxed, evolved driving feeling' - is called driving a hybrid.
    And as someone who likes flooring a prius daily yet still get good +55mpg through good coasting and regen, it's that relaxing, soft touch (arse/F G-Force) feeling that makes you appreciate the management of momentum, just as pleasant as the responsive force of the battery/e-motor.

    Nothing comes from nothing and as graduate engineer, although not within the automotive field, it's difficult for me to see, how adding approx. 200 kg to the weight of a 320i (and getting a 330e) can give a better “fuel economy” in the real world. I know one on a piece of paper can prove the better efficiency, but it would be nice to see a calculation from the real life, including the costs for electricity and petrol.

    I could drive 95% of the time on electric only with this system. I might drive 40-50km everyday. On the longer trips I would have to use the engine. Charging over night is quite cheap in Ontario Canada so this is a very clever alternative to full electric.
    This makes a full EV kind of useless in my opinion at this stage. The model 3 AWD is 72k CAD here. I don't see the 330e being anywhere near that price. In fact, the 5 series version of this hybrid is 4500 more than the base 5 series so the 330e will probably be 54k CAD. That's 18k less than a Model 3 AWD. And I will never have to wait for the car to charge and deal with the horrible build quality and design of the Model 3.

    Just wondering... This hybrid can cover as Thomas said 537 km with a full gas tank and 47 km with electric power. I guess that is that this 537 km with gas will increase while driving in hybrid mode. So lets say the car will cover a total of 800 km before needs to be filled up again with gas and electric power. And here comes the question; A plugin hybrid like this or a fully electric like i4 with about 600 km electric power range ?

    Hey, loved this review but could you please Thomas answer to 3 questions of mine? :D I`m extremely interested in this vehicle but my questions are: 1) Doesen`t this car have the Comfort mode as well? Instead of id i noticed the Hybrid :? 2) Isn`t it heavier then the normal 3 series? I know on the 5 series that the 530e it`s about 500lb heavier then a 530i. 3) Do you still think someone should go for the xDrive as an addition or just let it be a real bmw? Thank you!! :)

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Comfort mode is basically base, as for the other settings. Yes it is significantly heavier of course due to the battery. But feels lighter due to electric riding. Keep it real. Drove the AWD Touring the same day. Loved the 330e RWD - it's the best 3-Series imho.

    Dear Thomas, first of all thank you very much for the detailed review, I really liked it...based on your previous review (almost 4 years ago :-D ) about the VW Passat GTE made me confident to buy it and it was worth but now it`s time to change. I am really thinking about the BMW 330e however I am not sure now about the full electric range - in your video it showed 47km to go with full charge, that is quite low compared to what they are claiming in the specs 55-61km...what is your view on this? • @dstfno
      @dstfno 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is true. BMW offers cars that have stronger engines (even in their base models) and are therefore also driven more aggressively. Which in turn requires proper maintenance in order to keep functioning well. The myth of the cars breaking down more often than their competitors is in a great part attributed to previous owners of 70hp cars thinking they can have a faster car at the same low maintenance cost while constantly pushing it to the limit.
