    It’s not Tesla’s battery, it’s Panasonic’s. Tesla is just using them. 4680s are used by lots of companies, and they are simply higher capacity 2170s.

      Panasonic does create a 4680 cell. AND Tesla manufactures its own 4680 battery cells with tabless cathodes and anodes

    Are these new cells the ones with iron that are supposed to be less likely to catch on fire? Do they have more energy density just because the battery to container ratio is higher? Why aren't they square so that more battery can be packed into the same space? Hexagonal would also allow for more battery in the same space.

      Most likely the battery has a cylindrical shape because it's much easier and cheaper to manufacture in high volumes with current factory facilities. The only thing that will need to be done to upgrade a cell is to improve on the chemistry of the cell and newer and less expensive battery chemistries are fully tested. I would think a hexagonal cell would allow a tighter packing of cells, but people smarter than you and me have chosen to stick with current manufacturing technologies instead of having to recreate different ones to build a hexagonal or square form battery.

    The battery has 5 times the volume of the 2170 cell, the 4680 hold 5 times the energy. This is like saying a D cell battery is a huge step forward compared with a C cell. The battery chemistry is the same so the energy density has not been improved. In fact the 2170 battery pack Tesla model Y have a longer range than the 4680 battery pack model Y. This is the type of video that comes from taking Musk or Tesla at their word. Panasonic make the batteries Tesla use. The employees at giga Nevada are Panasonic employees.

    THE battery that has changed the automotive landscape is the CATL Shenxing and more specifically the Shenxing Plus. 1000 KM range and 600KM of added range with a 10 minute charge. Tesla's battery is obsolete.

      @woolychewbakker5277 And the battery pack is where some of the benefit comes from meaning it doesn't waste space like a cylindrical cell. It's also LFP, so safer and it charges MUCH faster.

      @woolychewbakker5277 Other than 4C charging. If you think that people want to wait hours to charge, then you're right. If you think people would prefer to wait 10 minutes then you're wrong. You can decide.
