How Chinese EV Giant BYD Is Taking On Tesla

  • Warren Buffett-backed BYD dethroned Tesla in the fourth quarter of 2023 as the world’s top EV maker, selling more battery-powered vehicles than its U.S. rival. BYD was founded by Wang Chuanfu and started making batteries for mobile phones in the 1990s. By 2003, it pivoted to autos and now has become the top car brand in China, as well as a major producer of batteries for electric vehicles. It’s now aggressively expanding globally, exporting over 240,000 cars across 70 countries last year. Elon Musk said in Tesla's Q4 earnings call that Chinese automakers will "demolish most other car companies in the world" unless regulators step in. With sights set on North America, BYD could try entering the U.S., but faces government opposition. CNBC explores whether BYD can sustain its relentless growth and what's next for this EV juggernaut.

In all seriousness, I understand why Musk didn't think of them as competition 4 years ago. When BYD was making ICE cars, their cars were not great, and I've heard stories of safety issues with BYD from the 2010-2018 period.
They started to make better cars when we entered the electric age, and they have their own battery supply so that's a huge advantage. The Han sedan in 2021 really turned it around for BYD in terms of perception and they have been rising ever since.

BYD is selling a lot of cars in Mexico. I remember 20 years ago Mexicans used to buy used cars in US border towns because American and Japanese made cars were and still are more expensive in Mexico than in the US. For example, the Honda Accord is about $10K more in Mexico than in the US. Then about 5 years ago Chinese brands started being sold in Mexico and the average middle class and lower middle class Mexicans are buying them left and right. The Mexicans figure, why buy a used American car in Laredo, TX when I can buy a new competitively priced car in Mexico and pay no import tax? Chinese companies are starting to manufacture a lot in Mexico also. Every time my wife and I go to Monterrey we see more and more Chinese people. If the US continues on its "America first and screw the rest of the world" policies Canada and Mexico will probably pivot and foster tighter trade relations with the rest of the world.

The argument that Chinese government overly subsidizes its EVs may not hold. As far as I know, China may give a 10-15% subsidy. Here in California, the state incentive may be between $3.5K to 5.5K, and the Federal may provide up to $7.5K. If you buy an M3 or MY, the total subsidy is about 20%. That simply means the high EV price is due to the crazy profit made by car makers.

Unfortunately even without political tensions between Canada and China, it is highly unlikely that BYD and other mainstream Chinese carmakers will export cars to Canada anytime soon. Most car markets across the world such as Australia, SE Asia, Latin America etc follow European safety standards, and since modern Chinese cars are meant for export as well, they are designed to meet those European standards, and with minimal modifications can be sold in all those markets as well. Canadian standards instead follow the US. Not that it is any more or less safe than European standards, but just different enough that it would cost BYD a good amount of time and resources to modify their cars to meet the US standards.
The upshot is the only reason BYD would sell cars in Canada would be they are also planning to enter the US market, and by federalizing their cars for US FMVSS standards, they would also essentially meet all Canadian standards. However, since it is unlikely BYD will enter the US market any time soon, not after what the US did to Huawei and any other Chinese brands considered a threat to "national security", BYD would not waste the time and money to federalize their cars just to sell in Canada.

NIO, avatr, leap and Aito makes models that are much better value for money than their western counterparts. I used to think Chinese made products used to be copies, non innovative, low quality etc. it’s a new world and they’re at the forefront. Especially battery technology from CATL. They not only are vertically integrated from the mining to the finished product, but also invented the mining technology and battery chemistry makeup etc.
for the foreseeable future, the Americans and Europeans will cannot compete with these brands unless there is protectionism. This idea of Chinese cars flooding the American market is absurd ( since there are millions of American cars currently in China ).

China is willing to export cars to the United States, and any car in China is priced lower than in the US or Japanese markets. If the tariffs on cars exported from China to the United States are reduced to the level of Mexico, then the US automotive industry will only have one path to bankruptcy. Parts are possible to make your self since tech is simple and communities grow around keeping them going millions of km's, while good ev can go only 10 years top before its ready to be scrapped as the battery replacement costs more than cars value. Also no special steels, just take broken washing machine and weld a patch from sheet metal. Insurance is cheaper since resale value is next to nothing, but so it purchase price and sheet metal is far cheaper than replacing the whole car cause someone kicked football on the front bumper that houses the 1500€ adaptive cruise control sensor.
Cheap as in Chinese cheap EV's dont last, can easily catch on fire due poor quality, emitting toxic fumes, so yeah very environmentally friendly to burn them and recycling is very expensive when just one cell causing thermal runaway in recycling yard can light the 150tons of batteries with no way to put them out other than let them burn out...
