I used to live in China while ago, I am Brazilian, I have seen the powerforce of Chinese industry, when they first came to Brazil with a handful of badly made cars, it was a disaster, cars back then were not made for brazilian roads, bad construction, structure, the cars simply melt down. A year or so ago when BYD and GWM came to Brazil, I was very twisting noses to it, but these brands do not sell the same cars worldwide, they do their localization task, they modify their vehicles to the countries roads, taste and needs, so they became best sellers so fast, construction of the car is great, driveability is good, tecnology and power that you would need at least double the money to get the same stuff from traditional brands. There are simply no competition, in my family everybody is buying these cars, they are a real deal.

Previous cars in the household have been Honda Civic and CRV, VW Golf and Subaru XV. In all of them I found something not right in the assembly, or they were recalled for faults. So far I cannot fault the BYD, except for the OEM choice of tyres which haven't performed so well in wet weather (will be swapping to either Michelin or Continental soon.). I can honestly say old school car manufacturers have a BIG problem in front of them as BYD is pumping out a quality product at a very reasonable price point.

when western goes to other countries and beat down those markets they claim should be open free market and protectionism is bad for economy and competition. Now china is beating them in their own game, suddenly is a national threat and bad for economy to give cheaper quality options to public. Just laughable. Western companies are so used to them being "top dog" that anyone who does it better than them is obviously "cheating". BYD can do better not because of subsidies but they own many critical parts of their supply chain to control cost. Even now china evs do not get any govt subsidies but western govt do not want to acknowledge that they are simply much better than them. There have been some trials with car manufacturing in Brazil... the most famous which ALMOST worded out (I guess) was the Gurgel from the 1970's.
There always are strong efforts/powers always trying to prevent development... the home elite and multinationals which never want to lose. Petrobras took the life of our perhaps most important president ever; Getúlio Vargas in order to become reality.

Yes a lot of people forget that when Musk bought Tesla (hopefully everyone knows he didn't start the company?) he never dreamed he'd be this successful. His goal was to make EV's glamorous and desirable enough to create a wave of consumer interest that would force governments and the legacy auto industry (which having been in cahoots with the fossil fuel industry from the start tended to scuttle or downplay any and all attempts at alternate technology - they even opposed unleaded fuel if anyone is old enough to remember) to start the move away from oil. That's why he did things like put a Tesla Roadster in space and create Ludicrous Mode in the Type S. To get people talking. And he has succeeded, EVs have always existed, I remember milk delivery vans in England in the 80s were battery powered, he made them sexy and mainstream. That is what the world owes Musk.
But I have never liked EVs as a concept. 90% of a car's operating pollution is not exhaust emissions, it is tyre and brake dust and others such things which are exactly the same for an EV as for ICE (worse for EVs in some cases because they are so much heavier and consume tyres and brakes faster). So you are only reducing 10% by switching to EV. Meanwhile the effort and expense of building additional electric generation and distribution has been eye-watering and finally the heavy earths and metals used in EVs are far worse than fossil fuels in terms of the environmental costs of extracting, tranporting and processing them.
Japan interestingly carefully evaluated both electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell and they chose to go with hydrogen as a true future vehicle propulsion technology. But Musk's success at promoting EVs started a snowball effect especially in terms of the regulatory landscape around the world which made it more and more unlikely that hydrogen would be able to catch up or to compete. And that is a crying shame. So many times the lesser technology has won over the better in the market. Like Betamax and VHS in the video-cassette days and this is another example. However I think hydrogen is making a slight come-back, especially as they have now cracked how to make hydrogen fuel less expensive and more environmentally friendly at the production stage (look up Blue and Green Hydrogen). There are still challenges about distribution but instead of needing to to build new infrastructure from scratch a lot of it can be managed by upgrading and converting existing infrastructure like gas pipelines, storage and distribution. It's going to be interesting how things go. I'm rooting for hydrogen and I will hold on to ICE for as long as I can until then.

Both BYD and Tesla are growing and the ICE market is shrinking. So the question is who is growing faster by taking away the ICE market. BYD sells lower cost market cars segment, mostly in China, so they will grow faster. Tesla growth will speed up once they move into the low $30,000’s and $20,000’s cars, either by improving the manufacturing cost of model 3 or/and making the Model 2. BYD will have a harder time entering the US and European maket because they don’t have any manufacturing plants there in order to bypass the tariff. But even when they do manufacturing jn Europe and US, they will lose the advantage of China cheap labor cost. Unless they can automate and make cars just as cheap as Tesla and make their comparable model cars more attractive at the same price as Tesla, they still cannot compete.

The solution to US China antipathy is to build plants in Canada and Mexico. It will be difficult to justify a tariff on BYD-Mexici, but not Ford-Mexico.

You are being goofy or deliberately talking funny by suggesting to build EV factories in Canada, knowing that it was Canada that kidnapped the CFO of Huawei on behest of the US under Donald Trump's watch, and kept her under house arrest with electronic shackles locked to her ankle for more than 1000 days before she was released without any charges. Would any ordinary reasonable person be convinced that Canada would not confiscate the entire EV factories in the similar way, totally in flagrant violation of international and domestic laws?

Actually BYD sold over 3 million cars in 2023 if we include BEV and PHEV. That’s twice more than Tesla.

@dixienormus1619 😂😂Thanks for sharing your insights. Yes, EV prices are expected to continue to fall sharply. But EVs are very cheap to start with in this part of the world (Thailand) anyways. It is amazing how far they have progressed since the first time I test drove a Model S few years ago. Frankly, in the absence of twisty roads, the driving qualities are not far from the Porsches I owned🫣

EU Car makers has been selling cars in china for years and making money and Chine never threaten to impose any taxes and now just like US as they couldent compete with Huawei they banned it EU is looking to do the same if they end up putting tariffs and both of the countries will stand on the wrong side of history by doing this if you as a country isnt able to compete thats your fault you spent you time and energy into wrong thins rather then fixing that and stoping the innovation by force will only hurt you and your countries even more
