S1 - Ep 344 - Kimberley - The Impressive Sentimental Journey which Surprised us!

  • Our visit to Kimberley began with a late arrival, but we wasted no time and dropped off our bags before heading out for dinner. The Mohawk Spur provided a delightful dining experience with delicious food. We knew that Kimberley had so much to offer, so we carefully selected a few places to explore the following morning. We marveled at the Cecil John Rhodes statue, paid our respects at the war memorials, and were left in awe by the breathtaking Anglican Cathedral, its size truly mind-blowing. A sentimental journey took us to St Patrick's CBC, where my father and uncle had attended school years ago. The impressive institution surprised us with its greatness. Of course, our visit wouldn't have been complete without a trip to the iconic Big Hole, a colossal highlight that left us amazed. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kimberley

    Thank you for this video - really brought back memories from the early 1960's.
    My dad was one of the ministers at Saint Cyprian's for about 3 years and we lived in a house behind the bell tower which fronted onto what was then "Park Lane".
    The present Bell Tower was built during the years we were in Kimberly and became an adventure play ground for my brother and I during it's construction, with frequent dares to see who would climb the scaffolding on the outside all the way to the top as the Bell tower progressed up without being caught by security guard- "scary stuff looking back, but no big deal to 2 lighties back then.
    The inside of the cathedral also brought back memories of sitting through lots of services, which carried on after my dad was transferred to his own parish at De Arr as my brother and I were put in as boarders at KBHS and we had to attend church every Sunday night.
    Thanks again - safe travels - from Australia

    I thoroughly enjoyed this sentimental trip of yours, Curtis - your mouthwatering Spur meal and comfortable accommodation at the end of your long day really set the scene, as did hearing about the welcome rain showers during the night.
    The college your father and uncle attended is really quite magnificent! I can only imagine the feelings that “walking in their footsteps” after so many decades must have evoked in you. I particularly loved hearing so many birds as you strolled around - their delightful chorus added such a sense of tranquility.
    It was lovely to see inside that beautiful Anglican Cathedral - how fortunate you were admitted by the kind gentleman who procured the key!
    This city is clearly steeped in a rich history - beginning with the discovery of diamonds. What an absolute treat to have seen the mine village and the big hole itself! Thank you so much for showing us around!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      Thank you for joining us in Kimberley. This visit was a little emotional for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed visiting my dad and uncle's former school and some of the other landmarks in the rest of the city. Our meal was to die for and we had such a good time that evening after quite a long drive that afternoon. Fortunately our accommodation was very comfortable too, so when we did hit the sack, it was off to Snoozeland very quickly. 😴 The Cathedral blew my mind, again and again! 😍💒 The detail and the sheer size of it, was rather intimidating in the best way possible and I was just as happy that I was allowed to film inside. I loved wandering around the Big Hole Village and could quite easily see me relaxing in the library with one of those old newspaper books or playing a game of billiards with the other gentlemen. 😁 The hole itself was super, super impressive and I could only really comprehend the enormity of it once I saw it with my own eyes. 😳🕳️ The fact that it was dug by hand, is something I can't completely wrap my mind around just yet. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    My memories of Kimberley goes back to the 80's, and I do know you do not have time to see everything, but the railway station of Kimberley is really something to behold. On our shopping days in Kimberley we always made a quick stop at the drive in bar...I do not know if it still exists. Kimberley was also the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to install electric street lighting....and I had to look up the date...2 Sept 1882....it came on before those of London...can you believe...

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Wow, wildly interesting about the first street light and even before London! Go Kimberley! 😁💡 That is really super cool to know. To be honest, we were so overhwelmed by all the history and the buildings we did happen to happen upon, that we never even thought about the station, believe it or not. It sounds a cool place to see though. You've obviously spent some time in Kimberley, a place definitely worthwhile spending time in. The drive-in bar sounds awesome too. Sounds like a great place to take a break from the summer heat which I'm sure is quite intense in Kimberley. 🍻 Cheers to you for taking the drive with us! 🚙👌🏻

    Hi you two! Thank you for tis amazing trip. Kimberley is one of those well known places we just drive past when we decide to take the N12 to George. It is good to see it from the inside. Your arrival in the wet and dark was well made up for by the cuppas the next morning!
    Happy for you that you could visit your dad's old school, it was just as captivating as the churches and the other old buildings.
    I am somewhat overwhelmed by the historicity of just about everything in the city. Apart from the Big Hole, that 1870's museum-village was most captivating. Kimberley will take a week or more to explore. I have run out of words to describe the feelings the expedition you took me on left me with. Thanks again!
    Keep safe!

      Let me tell you, we needed the cuppas the following morning! 😁☕ Kimberley is indeed a big city with big and deep history. It was incredibly interesting to immerse ourselves for a few hours, but then the time came again to move on. I could easily spend a whole day in the village at The Big Hole, it's absolutely awesome and transported me right back to a time I wasn't even around. And the hole itself! There are no words to describe the absolute wonderment I felt when I looked out over it. 🤩🕳️ Definitely a memorable visit this was! 🚙👌🏻

    Hi guys i have seen the big hole twice but only from a plane. I was very impressed with the historical city the memorial to the victim's of the concentration camp was sad .the statue of Rhodes was very imperial the bronzes stunning the Anglecan cathedral was amazing I've never seen anything like the brickwork lovely statue of the nun and also her nursing college. The size of the Masonic temple is a great indication of the wealth of Kimberly in the day shame about the war memorials being vandalised. It also happens in the UK. How amazing you got to see where your father and uncle went to school the Christian Brothers schools were known for the good education and also for stong discipline. The grounds where amazing and indoor pool the village was so interesting i bet you could have stayed all day.and the big hole is big and dug by hand. Thanks for showing me Kimberly a place I've only flew over. Great video thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

    Een beetje laat maar toch nog even mijn reactie want ohhh wat heerlijk een openlucht museum met originele huizen, treinen, kantoren etc uit vervlogen tijden. I love love love zulke musea.

I didn't see the Cathedral which I would have enjoyed (need to go again), The 'Village' at the Big Hole seems to have been refreshed but that's just normal. When I visited there were lots of school children on field trips learning about the history, which was good to see. And The BIG Hole- what can you say except...It's BIG and DEEP. I spent ages looking for the diamonds they missed. Haha, in my dreams.
    Thanks for a great video guys. Take care and Drive Safely.

    Amazing! Been to Kimberley many times and each and every time it's always a new and refreshing experience. Agreed, it's not only about the Kruger Park, Table mountain etc, buy your ticket in the city centre, step on the period tram and take a ride past the "Big Cecil" into the village open-air museum and the heyday of mining madness. Almost everything is authentic down to the funeral parlour - truly unique in the world. The train carriage was a bespoke special order from Rhodes made by Pullman in Chicago with state-of-the-art features and conveniences for him and his directors as they moved around the country. Of course there is the dark side; ill-treatment of the black workers, rivalry and violence. In the film "Misery" 1990 based on Steven King's novel, the lead character has his ankles broken with a sledge hammer to immobilise him. His tormentor tells him that "that is how they punished diamond thieves in Kimberley". Grotesque! Thanks Dustbugs.

The mining village was a definite highlight for me and I felt transported back in time while I was walking around there. History by no means only consists of good and happy stories and events, there were as many, if not more, sad and dark stories and events that took place, as depicted in the movie you referred to. I was a big Steven King fan earlier in my life, but never saw Misery. I may just have a peek. Thanks for all the info and joining us in Kimberley. 🚙💎

The cathedral is awesome, particularly the magnificent entrance. Lucky that you got to see inside. I last visited Kimberley in 1988 as a newly wed. Good to see the old mining village again. I remember that old choo choo. The figures in some of the buildings gives me the creeps! The saloon is just as I remember, except that honky tonky music would start up when you entered, which made it even creepier! The big hole is still the big hole. Amazing what people will do just for a few sparkling klippies, even dig such a hole with their hands. Thank you for a very insightful tour of Kimberley.

      Our accommodation was very nice indeed, and a great place to come home to that evening. 😍🏠 Kimberley has its fair share of spectacular buildings and monuments and I'm glad we were able to see a good few of them. The highlight was without doubt the Cathedral and the mining village, those were two memorable stops which I'm very grateful for. 💒💎 The Big Hole is super impressive, especially if one thinks it was dug so long ago and by hand, no less! 🕳️😳 I'm glad you enjoyed our trip to Kimberley. 🚙😁

      Kimberley is full of interesting and historical monuments and buildings. That stunning Cathedral was definitely a big highlight for us, I was awestruck by its beauty, inside and out. 🚙💒 The Big Hole is for sure incredible to see too, especially when one thinks it was dug entirely by hand. 🕳️💎 I'm glad you enjoy our videos, thank you for watching! 😁

    So much security like a prison. Doesn't look like a safe town anymore

      It is the "new" South Africa... you must be prepaired for the "baddies",unfortunately.
      Our open gardens are things of the past. We all fence ourselves IN to try and keep the baddies OUT!! But the nature of the country is still beautiful.....❤

      Hi Niel. I can't think of any safe town's anymore. I live in the beautiful town of Graskop. The Spar in town has been robbed twice in recent years. Once when it was full of shoppers who were also robbed. The last time a few months back they blew up the ATM inside. The petrol station has been robbed so many times I've lost count. The ATM there has also been blown up numerous times. My wife and I were robbed at our house in Pilgrims Rest 12 years ago. I was shot in the chest but was still able to chase them off. The new South Africa is a real blast.

      @@nivenrowe59 yes it's chaos. The small free state and Northern Cape towns are a bit better. All main centers, KZN, Mpumalanga are hot spots.

    Very informative video! I never knew Kimberley is a city! When I searched for the population, I saw it's only 7525 people, but then realised that's Kimberley in Canada! Seems the one in SA has around 225 000. That museum looks fascinating, with the was models and all! It's also remarkable that one of the buildings was prefabrucated in England! Although you didn't mention this in the video, I searched for the biggest hand dug mine hole in the world and seems it's either the Kimberley hole of the one in Jagersfontein, of which more info can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagersfontein_Mine

    How’s the loadshedding and water cuts?

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We live in the Western Cape, so I'm only able to comment on our province. 🙂 Loadshedding is still ongoing and moves between stages. We occasionally will have a reprieve for a day or two, but we have at least one two-hour scheduled power outage each day. As far as water cuts go, we don't experience those where we live. We have heard about those though in many places we've travelled to and through. 💡🚰
